LG V20 finally starts getting Android Pie, LG G8 Android 10 due by year's end

The LG V20, the company's last flagship with a removable battery, is three years old now, but the Korean manufacturer hasn't forgotten about it. LG V20s in Korea are currently being updated to Android Pie, with US carrier units hopefully following along shortly, if the past is any indication. LG also announced that its spring flagship phone, the G8 ThinQ, will be updated to Android 10 in the fourth quarter.

After starting with Android 7 (Nougat) out-of-the-box in 2016, it took almost one year before the V20 got upgraded to Android Oreo. Fifteen months after Pie's rollout and already behind its own schedule, LG is finally serving V20 owners in South Korea the Android 9 update. As they say, it's better late than never but we can't help thinking that LG's Software Upgrade Center just isn't making much of a difference when it comes to executing prompt updates. LG has posted an Android Pie upgrade tutorial guide that showcases the major changes.

As for the LG G8, the company simply mentions that the update to Android 10 will be delivered sometime in the fourth quarter of 2019. With the beta program for the LG G8 still ongoing, LG will hopefully squash all the bugs it finds and delivers Android 10 without any unexpected delays.

LG V20™ Software Update

To help you with the mandatory software update for your device, this page contains the following information:

  • Software Update Instructions - User initiated over the air (OTA)
  • Software Update Instructions - Server initiated OTA
  • Updating while roaming
  • Insufficient device memory alert
  • Battery life expectations after a major software update

User initiated OTA

To start the download:

  1. Start on the Home screen by tapping the Menu Key
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap About Phone
  4. Tap Software updates
  5. Tap Check for Update
  6. Tap Download Now

When download is complete, a screen will appear advising you that the new version of software is ready to be installed.

Tap Install Now.

The device will power down and restart. A screen will appear stating that the installation has been completed. Tap OK.

Server initiated OTA

Once a new software version is available for your device, it'll begin downloading in the background.

When the download is complete, you'll be notified that it is ready to be installed.

Tap Install Now and the device will power down and restart. A screen will appear stating that the installation has been completed. Tap OK.

To check your software version from the home screen:

  • Tap Menu
  • Tap Settings
  • Tap About Phone

Updating while roaming

You won't receive a software update notice if you're roaming. You'll need to be connected to Wi-Fi to update your device while roaming.

To enable Wi-Fi on your device, go to Settings under Wireless & Networks and tap Wi-Fi ON to enable (if not already enabled).

Tap Wi-Fi to view and select a Wi-Fi network.

Once you're connected, an update notification will appear on your device. If the software update fails to install, you'll get an error screen, though this only means the software didn't install properly. Remove and re-insert the battery, and power your device back on. The device will restart with the original software and will prompt you once again to install the software update.

Insufficient Device Memory

Due to changes in the Lollipop OS, you'll need sufficient reserved memory for a software upgrade. If you don't have enough user memory, a Low Memory pop-up screen will be shown until you free up enough memory. Eliminating unused apps, and clearing videos or photos can help free up device memory. If you dismiss the notification and have not cleared space after 24 hours, a pre-update message will pop up again until you free up the memory necessary to perform the software update.

Battery life expectations after a major software update:

  • The application memory may have to be optimized. This can take time and cause the device to temporarily use more battery while the optimization is in progress.
  • Downloaded apps may not be optimized, as app developers don't immediately update their apps to support new versions of the OS. This may result in higher than normal battery drain, and in some cases device sluggishness, until apps are updated or removed.
  • It can take 2 to 3 days for the device's battery life to normalize.

Software Upgrade Assistant Tool

If you don't have a strong connection to Wi-Fi or the Verizon Wireless network, you may not be able to perform a software update over the air. Instead, you can connect your device to a computer with Internet access. Connect your device to your computer using your USB cable, then download the Software Upgrade Assistant tool to your computer, which will check for software updates and initiate the software update process.

Update android lg v20

LG doesn’t have the best of track records with firmware updates. The latest example is the Android 9 Pie update for the LG V20 which has just begun seeing in South Korea. The phone launched back in 2016 with Android 7 Nougat and received Oreo over a year ago. The new update is currently exclusive to Korean users and there’s no word on when it will be available elsewhere for now.

LG V20 gets Android 9 Pie in Korea, more devices to receive the update in the coming months

  • Google Digital Wellness has been added.
  • Added battery saving feature.

LG V20 gets Android 9 Pie in Korea, more devices to receive the update in the coming months

Meanwhile LG also announced its plans to update several other devices to Pie by the end of Q4 2019. These include the LG Q9, G7 One and the K40. The company also confirmed it's planning to release a stable build of Android 10 for its LG G8 ThinQ before the end of the year. LG did mention that all of these update targets are solely for the Korean market so there's no confirmation as to the international availability.

If this can be released (and is predominately bug-free) for the Global versions of the V20 (H990DS and the likes) then I might reconsider getting another LG in the future.

Right now however I'm so jaded by their awful lack of updates (not even security updates) and terrible battery life/quality, I'll probably never buy another LG again.
Even though I love my V20 and there's nothing that can come close to it in terms of price/performance/features.

The phone design is kinda late (the G8 and V50 has big notches and 19,5:9 ratio, but i still give the G8 credits since g8 has some features).
Their lacks of camera software quality and also their battery management is not that good. I ported the Gcam APK in my G6 and it becomes better.
Plus, their overall design in my opinion don't really stand out (Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Pixel, even now Sony have their own rather unique design).
LG with their G8X is probably the most unique phone (design wise) from lg with its dual screen accessories.

AnonD-732843, 03 Nov 2019Those would be very sought for features but LG will not be the only OEM in the market to have ... moreI concur.

Today I was thinking about a new phone concept, maybe you have some thoughts on it:
The idea was to give people what they wanted (full glass front and glass back) design-wise, but to find a solution to do it with durability and longevity in mind. Basically the phone is thick at 9.0mm's size, however, the front-side and the back-side digs in 1.0mm towards the phone. The phone is properly waterproofed above IP68 certification. Both the front and the back displays are made from plastic.

The plastic feels un-smooth and are very scratch prone. That's why out of the box, you get a Tempered Glass Protector for the front. This feels much better under the finger, resists most scratching (7 Mohs) and if it drops, it will crack, but will be easily replaceable whereas the bottom actual (plastic) display is unharmed (Shatterproof). The font protector covers everything except (cut-out) the speakers. The extra thickness of the protector is only 0.5mm (or less) so there's still a slight lip where the sideframe can absorb the impact if landing on flat surface.

The rear is the same deal, however, the plastic (non-shattering) backplate is Transparent and looks interesting. The plastic backplate however is very scratch prone. Inside the box there's also Tempered Glass Protector for the rear, and these units come with different pattern styles. Again, the glass protects the plastic from scratching, and when the glass eventually breaks it is very easily and cheaply replaced. The backplate covers everything like the OEM logos/Certification, except has a cut-out for the rear camera modules. These remain flush with the glass protector, and is recessed below the sideframe roughly 0.5mm like the front.

And the sideframe is a non-scratching, however, it isn't very impact resistant. So there's a bumper inside the box. This is a plastic bumper, and it isn't too thick when protecting the sides but boasts impressive corner padding for impact absorption.

Kangal, 02 Nov 2019I'm just saying, I don't agree with the assessment. The LG G6, LG V30, LG G8, and LG V50 are ... moreThose would be very sought for features but LG will not be the only OEM in the market to have all of those and definitely never again unless a miracle in management occurs. Most probable OEM to have it all is a Chinese brand as they are innovating much more while LG's mobile division is steadily declining even though their mistakes are so obvious they are still reluctant to make a turn around in their mentality.

what a shame for LG! releasing updates so soon !!
