USCIS Service Center Locations

Each Service Center location accepts and processes certain USCIS forms and immigration cases. For example, the Nebraska Service Center generally processes the N form application for people who are applying for U.S. citizenship. If you are you applying for a Green Card the service center will vary depending on the circumstances of how you are filing to obtain your Green Card. The Service Center location for applying for a U.S. visa, changing status or extending visa will depend on the type of visa you hold or what type of visa status you are requesting. Make sure to read the filing instructions on the USCIS form application for the correct Service Center mailing address for processing.

All applications and petitions must be filed by mail unless the form instructions offer an e-filing option.


File your application or petition following the specific instructions for the application or petition. After filing your application or petition, you should receive a receipt, Form I, within 30 days after your case is received. Your receipt will describe how your case will be processed.

The receipt number usually indicates which service center is processing your application or petition. For example, receipt numbers that start with WAC means the California Service Center is processing your case; receipt numbers that start with LIN means the Nebraska Service Center is processing your case; receipt numbers that start with SAC means the Texas Service Center is processing your case; and receipt numbers that start with EAC means the Vermont Service Center is processing your case.

Each U.S. state falls within the jurisdiction of a specific center. Check the chart below to see which service center your state falls under.

These Processing Times issued by USCIS gives you an estimate of how long it will take the National Benefits Center to process a class of petitions or applications. USCIS generally processes cases as they are received (&#;first in, first out&#;).

How to use the Processing Time Report:

  1. Check your receipt notice (IC, Notice of Action) and make sure that the receipt number begins with &#;MSC&#;.
  2. Look for the Form number or Purpose for your petition or application.
  3. Look for the specific Sub-type for your petition or application, if applicable.
  4. Check the column titled &#;Now Processing Cases with Receipt Notice Date of&#;. If you see a date, the Service Center is currently processing cases filed on or before that date. If you see &#;X&#; months, it means that the Service Center is processing cases within their internally-developed goal time frames.

If you find that your case is outside &#;normal&#; processing times, you can contact USCIS Customer Service.

NOTE: If you received a notice from USCIS informing you that the case has been transferred from the National Benefits Center to another Service Center or Local Field Office, check the processing times for the destination Service Center or Local Field Offices.

Introduction to Case Processing Times

USCIS displays case processing times for select forms and locations to let people know how long it generally takes to process benefit requests and when they can submit a service request for a case that is “outside normal processing time.” We update case processing times on the website monthly with the latest available data.

This webpage provides information on how to read and interpret the processing times on the website. It also provides details on the two different methodologies that we use to calculate processing times.

Where can I find my form number and the office that is processing my case?

Your receipt notice has key information you will need to determine your processing time.

Sections of a receipt notice with the following key information highlighted: 1. Form Type or Case Type; 2. Receipt Number; 3. Receipt Date; 4. USCIS Office.

Note:

If the “USCIS Office” is the National Benefits Center (NBC) and you have filed an employment-based or family-based Form I, Form N, or Form N, you should check processing times for your local field office.

Estimated time range: This column lists case processing times as a range for select forms and locations. The lower value of the range is the time it took us to adjudicate 50% of our cases. The upper value of the range is the time it took us to complete 93% of our cases. See below for a description of how these ranges are calculated.

Form type: A description of the sub-type (for example, Form N, Application for Naturalization).

Receipt date for a case inquiry: The receipt date indicates when a person can submit a service request for a case that is “outside normal processing time.” Someone who has a receipt date before the “Receipt date for a case inquiry” can submit such a request online.

You can also view processing times for the Administrative Appeals Office and international offices. You can also find processing times for Form I, Application for Employment Authorization.

Methodologies for Calculating Processing Times

We use two methodologies for calculating processing times: cycle time (our old method) and processing time (our new method).

We have used the old method (cycle time) to measure processing time since As described in more detail below, it relies on aggregate pending and receipt counts, not individual case processing information. In , we began using actual case record information for greater accuracy of the information we posted on our website. Listed below are the forms that we currently post processing times for and the methodology associated with each form.

Cycle Time Methodology

Cycle time is the number of previous months of receipts it takes to equal the current month’s pending receipt volume.

For example, if a specific form has applications pending for the month of April and received receipts in February and receipts in March , then the cycle time for this form in April is 2 months ( + = pending applications). This is defined as the lower range value. The upper range value is normally the lower range value x

For example, if the cycle time is 2 months, then the upper range value would be 2 months x = months (rounded up to 3 months).

In this example, the range posted on the website for this form for April would be 2 Months to 3 Months.

Processing Time Methodology

Processing time is the number of months that have elapsed between the date we received the application, petition, or request and the date we completed the application, petition, or request (that is, when we approved or denied it) for all cases for a specific form in a given month.

For example, if USCIS received a Form I application on Feb. 23, and completed the application on April 5, , then the processing time for that specific application is 41 days. We make this calculation for every Form I application that we complete in a specific period (in our example here, this would be April ). We then calculate the median value (or 50th percentile) for all Form I applications we completed in April , which represents the lower range value. We also calculate the 93rd percentile, which represents the upper range value (or the “Receipt date for a case inquiry”). For example, for April for Form I, our processing times ranged from months to months. This means that we adjudicated half our cases in months or less (the 50% mark) and 93% of our applications in under months. We completed the remaining 7% over months.

In this example, the range posted on the website for Form I for April would be Months to Months.

Why Use the Processing Time Methodology?

The processing time methodology provides the most precise and up-to-date information available because it is based on the most recently completed cases. The cycle time methodology provides an estimate of case processing times, using slightly older data.

How do I use my USCIS receipt number to check my application status?

The main thing you will use your USCIS receipt for is tracking the progress of your application and your case status throughout the application process. Your case status at any point in time will depend on the case type and its average processing timeline. You can learn more about immigration filing processes and their estimated timelines on our website so that you have a sense of how long your application should take, and what to do if it seems like it might be taking too long. Here are the different ways you can check your application status, and how to go about each.

How to check your USCIS case status online

One of the quickest ways to check your USCIS case status is by using the USCIS online case status tracker. While you’re at it, you can also create a USCIS online account so that you can receive case updates in your email as they are available. Here are the steps to follow to check your case status online:

  1. Go to the USCIS case status checker.
  2. Enter your receipt number into the box underneath the “Enter your receipt number” text on the page. Type the receipt number in without spaces or dashes between any of the characters.
  3. Click the “Check Status” button.
  4. The page will load your case status.

How to check your USCIS case status by phone or email

If you prefer, you can also call or email USCIS to get your case status. 

To check your case status by phone, call USCIS at +1 () and follow the prompts. When you call this number, you will not be speaking directly with a USCIS officer. Many people call this number, so you may have to wait a while before getting connected to the system. You will need to provide your receipt number on the call, so make sure you have it with you when you call.

If you want to request your case status from USCIS via email, here are the email addresses you should use depending on which service center is processing your application:

If USCIS has forwarded your case to the National Visa Center (NVC) at the Department of State for further processing, USCIS cannot provide a status update to you by email. You will have to check your visa status with the NVC in that case.

How to use the USCIS online account system

For some immigration filings, for example, Form I, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, USCIS manages all case processing on the USCIS online account system. For such cases, USCIS will automatically create an online account for you and send you a welcome letter containing all the account details. When you create an account on USCIS’s online system, you will receive updates on your application in the email associated with your account. USCIS will also send case update notices to your mailing address.

How to use the USCIS e-Request portal

If you want to make further inquiries about your case status, you can submit an inquiry using the USCIS e-Request portal. You should file an inquiry if:

  1. your case is outside of the standard processing time, 
  2. you recently moved and need to update your address USCIS, 
  3. you have not received notices and other documents related to your case, like your Biometrics appointment notice, Employment Authorization Document (EAD), or Green Card in the mail,
  4. you made a typographic error on your application and would like to correct it.

In March , the functions of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) were brought under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security and became US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
