Kaiser Permanente Southern California Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency

GENERAL INFORMATION

Kaiser Permanente, Southern California Region is proud to offer a residency program designed to provide physical therapists with advanced knowledge and skill in a concentrated clinical environment.

The curriculum of this residency program is designed to provide physical therapists with advanced training in examination, clinical decision-making and treatment skills. The small group classroom and lab training sessions and one-on-one clinical supervision allow the clinical faculty to focus their instruction on the individual needs of each resident. This program is recognized by the American Physical Therapy Association as a Credentialed Post-professional Clinical Residency Program.

This residency begins the last Monday in February or March 1st  each year and runs for 52 consecutive weeks. The clinical training in this residency program is fulfilled in three ten-hour days per week and the classroom and lab training occurs during 34 weekend days throughout the residency year. Up to thirty residents are accepted to participate in the program each year. The residents are employed and provide patient care at eleven Kaiser Permanente Physical Therapy Clinics – located in Baldwin Park, Downey, Los Angeles, Ontario, Orange, Panorama City, Riverside, San Diego, South Bay, West Los Angeles, and Woodland Hills. The residents are paid for the hours that they provide patient care at the PT Resident rate (in 2021, the rate is $32.609/hour with benefits, $39.13/hour non-benefited). The residents also receive the Kaiser Permanente employee benefits package which includes health, hospital, and disability insurance. The registration fee for the program is $2000.00.

CURRICULUM OUTLINE

Each resident receives:

  • 1500 hours of clinical practice
  • 288 hours of classroom/lab instruction
  • 150 hours of 1:1 supervision while treating patients
  • 260 hours of resident directed learning activities

Letters of Recommendation

Your letters of recommendation will be directly submitted by the author to RF-PTCAS.  You will be required to submit contact information regarding your references into RF-PTCAS.  The author will be sent a link to electronically access and submit a letter of recommendation on your behalf.  Once submitted, the letter will be automatically linked to your application

Application Evaluative Criteria

The applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee consisting of the Department Administrator(s), Clinical Faculty, and Chiefs of Service of the Kaiser Permanente Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department where your application is submitted and be based on the following criteria:

    1. Academic background
    2. Postgraduate training
    3. Clinical experience in Orthopaedic physical therapy
    4. Teaching experience
    5. Research experience
    6. Community Service

    1. Have completed a completed an accredited DPT program.
    2. Possess superior verbal and written communication skills.
    3. Have completed long-term affiliations under supervision of a Physical Therapy Residency or Fellowship graduate.
    4. Have experience in data collection, analysis, and publication.
    5. Have participated in activities that have positively addressed a need in the community.

Under direct supervision, performs various patient care responsibilities as delegated and instructed by the Registered Physical Therapist. Provide patient care, routine clerical, department maintenance, and other non-patient care duties under the direct supervision of the Physical Therapy manager.

• Assists patients in preparation for treatment

• Instruct patients in the use of ambulation aids, transfer techniques, and supportive devices as delegated by the therapist

• Assist physical therapist and physical therapy assistants with procedures and treatments when requested

• Document treatment given to patient

• Document in medical records, when necessary, to explain cancellations of or changes in the physical therapy schedules

• Clean and maintain treatment areas and equipment

• Transport equipment and supplies for treatment and class presentations

• Maintain adequate supplies of linen and necessary materials in treatment rooms

• Order materials and supplies

• Perform other related duties as necessary

• This job has no supervisory responsibilities

Basic Qualifications:

- Minimum of one (1) year patient care experience, preferably in a Physical Therapy acute care setting and outpatient setting

- High school diploma/GED

- BLS

- Knowledge of basic medical terminology and basic anatomy

- Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos

- Ability to write correspondence

- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other incumbents of the organization

- Must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment
