Get ready: Google Chat is replacing Hangouts for more users

Google is preparing its Workspace customers to make the shift from Hangouts to Chat and the switchover starts on August

From then on, Google will push users who have selected the "Chat and classic Hangouts" to "Chat preferred," unless the user or admin explicitly opts out.

It's a big shift in Google's unwieldy messaging app strategy that spans Hangouts, Meet and Chat, as well as Allo and Duo. The new Chat messaging app is available in Gmail and as a standalone app in iOS and Android.

In October, Google said that it would start migrating everyone from Hangouts to Chat in the first half of , and would automatically migrate Hangouts conversations, contacts and saved history.

Today it offered a clarification: "Unless you opt-out, Google Chat will replace classic Hangouts as the default chat application for your affected users."

Later this year, Classic Hangouts will vanish and all users will be migrated to Google Chat. However, if admins want to opt out of the automatic switch to Chat, they can follow instructions on Google's support page.

"If you don't take any action, all users in your organization who have the "Chat and classic Hangouts" setting selected will be automatically upgraded to "Chat preferred" and the "Chat and classic Hangouts" setting will no longer be accessible. We anticipate this migration to take around two weeks," Google said.

Google also noted that direct calling won't be available in Chat until later this year.

"Chat doesn't yet support direct calling in the same way as classic Hangouts. We anticipate direct calling to become available for Google Chat later this year – we will provide an update here when that feature becomes available," said Google.

Google cut off its Electron-based version of Chat earlier this year in favor of a Chrome-based Progressive Web App (PWA).

The latest on Google Hangouts and the upgrade to Google Chat

Chat

Over the past few years, we’ve invested in building helpful and secure products you can use to communicate and stay connected with the people in your life. This month, we unveiled Google Workspace, which includes everything you need—Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Chat, Meet and more—to get anything done, now in one place. Google Workspace is generally available to all our business customers and next year we’ll bring it to everyone else, too.

Today we’re sharing an update on what this change means for Hangouts users, including those who use Hangouts with Google Fi and Google Voice. And we’re providing details about the future upgrade from Hangouts to Chat.

Google Chat for everyone coming next year

Next year, Chat will become available as a free service—both in the integrated experience in Gmail and the Chat standalone app. Chat includes familiar Hangouts features like direct and group messaging, with helpful additions like send to inbox, faster search, emoji reactions and suggested replies. With Chat, you can more easily plan with others on goals and similar interests, share and collaborate on files, and assign tasks to help keep everyone on the same page. In addition, Chat features the same strong phishing protections we built in Gmail, so if a link is sent to you via Chat, it will be checked against real-time data from Safe Browsing and flagged if it’s found to be malicious.

Starting in the first half of , everyone can begin upgrading from Hangouts to Chat. To ensure a smooth transition, we will help automatically migrate your Hangouts conversations, along with contacts and saved history. We'll share more specific guidance on what steps you can take when we begin the transition process.

We will help automatically migrate your Hangouts conversations, along with contacts and saved history.

Changes to Hangouts with Google Fi

As we’ve improved the texting and calling experiences available to Fi users over the years, we’ve seen more users shift away from using Hangouts to manage their texting and calling needs. Early next year, we’ll remove Fi support in Hangouts.

Fi users have historically been able to manage SMS and phone calls from Hangouts. In the next few weeks, Messages by Google will provide a similar experience. Fi users will be able to make voice calls and check voicemail from Messages for web, manage conversations from Messages across devices (even when their phone is off) and migrate their existing Hangouts conversations. Beginning this month, we’ll provide guidance about these changes and direct Hangouts Fi users to Messages or the default SMS app on their phone.

Changes to Hangouts with Google Voice

Similarly, Voice users have historically been able to get calls to their Google Voice number using Hangouts. Over the years, we’ve improved the native Voice experience to offer easy switching between internet and carrier calls, enhanced internet calling reliability, and updated experiences on web and mobile platforms to help users manage everything from one place. Beginning this month, we’ll direct Hangouts Voice users to the Voice app for text messaging and calling going forward, and early next year, we’ll remove Voice support in Hangouts.

Upcoming feature changes in Hangouts

New telecommunications regulations are being introduced in the EU and U.S. beginning in To comply with these new regulations, we need to remove the call phones feature in Hangouts. In October, we’ll start showing affected users an in-product notification with guidance on how to receive refunds on their remaining calling credits, and early next year, we’ll remove the feature entirely. Separately, in November, we’ll update the group video calling experience in Hangouts with Meet to provide better quality meetings.

Changes to Hangouts for business users

Last June, we introduced the Chat preferred setting in the Admin console to allow any admin to opt-in to migrate all end users to Chat in Google Workspace. We also made Chat preferred configurable at the organizational unit level. In the coming months, we’ll send notifications to Google Workspace admins to detail the final migration stages. Learn more in our Google Workspace Updates blog post.

Empowering our users going forward

As with any engineering project, it’s important to note that timing may shift. Yet we want to give you as much specific information as we can so you know what to expect. We’d like to thank all our users for staying on this journey with us, and we remain committed to delivering a more helpful communications experience for all.

Google Hangouts app set to warn that it&#;s &#;going away soon&#;

The writing has been on the wall for Google Hangouts for some time now, but soon Hangouts will begin warning of the app&#;s upcoming shutdown and migration to Chat.

About APK Insight: In this &#;APK Insight&#; post, we’ve decompiled the latest version of an application that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we’re able to see various lines of code within that hint at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ever ship these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. We’ll try to enable those that are closer to being finished, however, to show you how they’ll look in the case that they do ship. With that in mind, read on.

Hangouts &#;going away soon&#;

Google&#;s eventual shutdown of &#;Hangouts Classic&#; has been essentially confirmed since , with the company pushing Google Chat — previously known as &#;Hangouts Chat&#; — as the de facto alternative. In the time since then, Google has been steadily preparing to migrate Hangouts users to Chat either through its dedicated app or through Gmail&#;s new &#;Workspace for Individuals&#; experience, both of which keep all of your old messages.

In version 39 of the Google Hangouts app for Android, rolling out now via the Play Store, we find that Google may be nearly ready to properly shut down the app. There are new preparations for a &#;promo&#; to appear in the app, encouraging you to switch away from the old Hangouts app to either Gmail or Google Chat.

It&#;s time to switch to Chat

Hangouts is going away soon, so switch to Google Chat now. Your recent Hangouts conversations are ready for you in Chat.

Hangouts is going away soon, so switch to Chat in Gmail now. Your recent Hangouts conversations are ready for you in Gmail.

Which message you will see is based on a number of factors, such as your device&#;s size and whether Chat is available for you in Gmail. A similar warning will also appear in the app as a &#;persistent nudge,&#; making sure you don&#;t soon forget that it&#;s time to switch apps and get comfortable with Chat.

<string name=&#;persistent_chat_nudge_title_text&#;>Hangouts is going away soon</string>

<string name=&#;persistent_hub_nudge_description_text&#;>Switch to Chat in Gmail now to continue your Hangouts conversations with new features</string>

The warning messages are not yet live as of the latest update, but there seems to be code in place for Google to roll them out after a date that is still to be determined. Nothing in the app&#;s code currently points to a formal shutdown date for Hangouts, but these migration notices are a clear step in that direction.

Thanks to JEB Decompiler, from which some APK Insight teardowns benefit.

The slow, painful death of Google Hangouts is reaching its final phase

By Scott Scrivens

ShareTweetEmail

It&#;s time to say goodbye and switch to Chat

Hangouts is one of Google's most established messaging apps, but it's been dying a slow deathfor quite some time now. The transition to Google Chat is mostly complete for Google Workspace business users, but personal account holders have been able to hang on (sorry) for a bit longer. It looks like Google is preparing to put a stop to that, though.

Personal users who try to use the Android or iOS apps are being greeted by a blue banner explaining that Hangouts is not long for this world (via 9to5Google). You're encouraged to "Switch to Chat in Gmail" and if you press that button, you'll be signed out of Hangouts with that account and taken to the Chat section in Gmail. If you're still actively using the app, this means you'll no longer receive notifications or be able to send messages anymore. This really is the beginning of the end.

You can still add your account back in the Hangouts app if you really want to squeeze every last second of life out of it, but it will be going away for good soon enough, so maybe it's time to get used to the new way of doing things before you have no choice.

Google is also rolling out a similar message to the web version of the Hangouts app, but it won't sign you out there — rather, it opens a new tab with Google Chat in the hope that you'll forget all about the service you've been using for years. It'll also prompt you to install the Chat desktop app.

While we know the enterprise version of Hangouts will stop working later this year, there's no official word on when the service will shut down for personal accounts. These latest moves suggest that will be sooner rather than later, so don't expect free accounts to have access any longer than business ones. Hangouts will likely be dead by the end of the year, in every sense, so say you better say your goodbyes now. Check out Ryne's excellent retrospective if you'd like to reminisce and shed a tear.

Hangouts away is going

Google will let everyone migrate from Hangouts to Chat for free in

Google&#;s strategy around its messaging apps is nothing if not messy right now (hello Hangouts, Meet, Chat, Duo and Co.), but it looks like things will get a bit easier come next year. We already knew that Hangouts&#; time was coming to an end and as Google announced today, the company will allow all current Hangouts users to migrate to Chat &#; which was originally meant to only be its Slack-like messaging service for business users &#; in the first half of

One interesting wrinkle here: Chat will now also become free to use for consumers. Currently, you have to be a paying G Suite/Workspace user to access the service (though somehow it&#;s enabled on my free personal account).

While Chat isn&#;t an exact 1-to-1 replacement of Hangouts, it actually offers a bunch of additional features for group chats and collaboration around files and tasks, as well as new security tools. Chat, together with Rooms and Meet, will also be integrated deeply into the Gmail app as part of Google&#;s Workspace migration.

Google says it will automatically migrate all Hangouts conversations, contacts and history to Chat, but it&#;s not providing details about this yet. Final timing, Google says, may still shift. It&#;s not clear, though, when Google will force everyone to migrate and shut down the Hangouts servers for good.

There are a few more details here: If you use Hangouts with Google Fi, Hangouts support will go away &#;early next year.&#; Traditionally, Fi users were able to make calls and manage their text messages from Hangouts. That experience will migrate to Google&#;s Messages app.

If you&#;re a Google Voice user, there&#;s a similar transition happening. For voice calls and text messages, Hangouts users will now be directed to the Voice app, and early next year, your Voice support will be removed from Hangouts.

And for all users in the U.S. and Europe, the ability to call phones from Hangouts will disappear at the beginning of next year &#; and group video calls in Hangouts will transition to Meet in November.

Yeah &#; that all sounds complicated, but it&#;s a problem of Google&#;s own making. A few years ago, the idea was to move Hangouts users to its Allo and Duo apps and business users to Chat and Meet (or whatever they were called back then). Allo flopped (and few people use Duo), leaving Google with the unenviable task of keeping the aging Hangouts platform around for the foreseeable future and making the overall transition harder and more complicated, to the point where I&#;m not sure that consumers really understand what&#;s happening.

Google Hangouts Is Going Away Soon, And It Is Now Nudging You Towards Google Chat

We have been hearing about the eventual shutdown of Google Hangouts since when Google confirmed this, and finally it may be happening. The Hangouts app is now getting its own warning messages, urging users to switch to Chat. Google Chat is the logical successor for Hangouts, as far as text messaging is concerned. The video and audio call capabilities of Hangouts are expected to be handled by Google Duo, since the new Google Chat app does not have integrated voice or video call capabilities at this time. The latest updates for the Hangouts apps for Android and the iPhone are actively notifying users about the switch.

This comes after Google updated the Gmail app for iPhone and Android phones to integrate the Chat functionality, giving users the option of accessing Chats there or using the dedicated Google Chat app. The Chat messaging app, till a while ago, was only available for Google Workspace users, but is now available for personal accounts as well. That means the Gmail app on the iPhone and iPad as well as Android devices, will now have four tabs at the bottom of the interface—Gmail, Chat, Meet and Rooms.

Hangouts is displaying certain messages in the app to inform users who continue to use it. “It’s time to switch to Chat”, “Hangouts is going away soon, so switch to Google Chat now. Your recent Hangouts conversations are ready for you in Chat” and “Hangouts is going away soon, so switch to Chat in Gmail now. Your recent Hangouts conversations are ready for you in Gmail” are being seen by Hangouts users. While this is happening, there remains no confirmed date when Google will flip the switch and turn off the Hangouts app, once and for all.
