Central New York Fishing Hotline

October 22 - October 29

For those interested, there are also other fishing hotline/reports available for the region. A few of the web sites are: Wayne County Tourism, Visit Oswego County, Lake Ontario Fishing, and Oneida Lake Fishing Report (all leave DEC website).

Under Brianna's Law, all motor boat operators will need a boating safety certificate. How soon this certificate is required depends on your age, but by January 1, , all operators of motorized vessels regardless of age will need a certificate. For more information on Brianna's Law, classes, and the age breakdown please view Boating Education (leaves DEC website) on the NYS Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation site.

Region 7 and Eastern Region 8

The Freshwater Fishing Guide has been printed and distributed. It's a smaller sized guide with a black and white cover and It can also be viewed online at Freshwater fishing Guide.

It's getting that time of year and reports are getting harder to come by as anglers put down their fishing gear and begin heading to the woods. This trend will continue through the fall/early winter until ice fishing begins. So, there will likely be little new fishing information in coming weeks.

Many of the dock structures at the DEC boat launches will be removed shortly, or may have been removed already. So, please plan accordingly.

Lake Ontario

The lake fishing report is done for the season as most of the activity is now in the tributaries.

Oswego River

There are salmon in the river, along with a few trout, with egg sacs fished under a float, or bottom bouncing with egg sacs, egg imitating flies or plastics producing some action. Water flow is 12, cubic feet per second (CFS) as of Oct. This flow can make fishing difficult at times. See Salmon River report below for link to information on salmon fishing.

Remember there are mandatory personal flotation device (PFD) zones on the river. Visit Oswego County Tourism website (leaves DEC website) for more information on this and also for information on the life jacket loaner programs in the area.

Salmon River

The activity is now spread out throughout the river with a mix of Chinook and coho salmon. With the above average temperatures fishing early or late in the day has been best. Good baits continue to be egg sacs, beads, streamers, and egg imitating plastics or flies. Some brown trout and occasional Atlantic salmon are also being caught. Please view Salmon Fishing on Lake Ontario Tributaries for more information. Current water flow is CFS as of Oct

Port Bay

The Port Bay South Boat Launch is currently closed for repairs.

Sodus Bay

Try small minnows or jigs for yellow perch.

Oneida Lake

Just a reminder that the walleye daily limit on Oneida Lake is 3 fish with a 15" minimum length. Try for walleye in the 15 to 40 foot zone with blade baits or trolling with stickbaits in perch pattern. With this continued above average temperatures little to report on the fall shore walleye bite. Typically this is a good time of year to cast stickbaits just before and after dark from shore for walleye on the lake.

Otisco Lake

Look for tiger musky in the 10 to15 foot depths out side of weed edges with spinnerbaits, chatterbaits or big swimbaits. Largemouth bass are being caught in the weed beds by flipping creature baits or jigs.

If you catch a tiger musky on Otisco Lake that has been tagged, the tag should be located near the dorsal fin and be gray in color, please do not remove the tag if releasing the fish. Write down the tag number, length of fish, and location of the catch and either send an email to [email protected] or call ext. to report your catch.

Skaneateles Lake

Try trolling down 40 to 50 feet with small spoons for the trout. Keep watching the depth finder, if you see balls of bait adjust your down depth to that depth. For smallmouths try drop-shots, tube jigs or Ned-rigs in 20 to 30 foot of water.

Owasco Lake

Trolling is working for lake trout in 90 to foot of water, as is vertical jigging.

Cayuga Lake

Look for lake trout in 60 to foot of water vertical jigging, or trolling over foot of water and down 50 to 80 feet.

Canandaigua Lake

Look for lake trout in foot of water trolling 50 to 70 foot down.

Whitney Point Reservoir

Fishing small crankbaits from right up next to the bank out to about 6 feet is working for smallmouth bass and some walleye. Spinnerbaits and tube jigs are also working for the smallmouth.

Chenango, Tioughnioga and Susquehanna Rivers

Try spinners with silver blades and white marabou jigs for smallmouth bass and fallfish. Smallmouth bass are also being taken on topwaters and small crankbaits.

Sandy Pond, Seneca Lake, Keuka Lake

No new information.

Walleye Opener Oneida Lake

I had an absolute blast this weekend with my Oneida Lake fishing charters. One was with new customers and one trip was with a regular of mine.

Saturday I took out 10 year old Harrow, his father Cory, and his uncle Andy. All Harrow wanted for his birthday was to go fishing and catch lots of fish so that was what we did.

We started out in the morning with temps in the 30s. The air might have been cold but the fishing was hot. It didn&#;t take long to put a limit in the boat with Harrow catching the 3 largest of the day. Many more were caught and released to filet another day.

Sunday my man Clarance was back in town. This time he brought along his mother Jonnie and his grandfather Alby. It was great to she Clarance get his grandfather out for a day of fishing.

Sunday&#;s bite was not as hot as Saturday&#;s. That being said it didn&#;t stop these three from boating a limit of fish.

I still have some fall dates available and expect the fishing to be nothing short of great the rest of the open water season. Give me a call to get in on the action.
