Press Releases

  • Tesla’s Model 3 becomes the first EV to top the general model rankings, in September
  • Tesla outsold established brands including Fiat, Nissan and Seat
  • SUVs are on track to secure a 50% market share

September was another significant month for Europe’s automotive industry, as new car registrations fell by 25% to just , units. Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at JATO Dynamics, commented: “Dealers continue to face issues with the availability of new cars due to the chip shortage. As a result, unwilling to wait more than a year for a new car, many consumers have turned to the used car market.”

Year-to-date, Europe’s 26 markets continued to outperform in comparison to , however the gap has narrowed. By the end of the first half of the year, total registrations were 27% higher than in H1 Results through September show that this gap has narrowed to just 7%. Munoz continued: “This year, the industry has responded well to the the pandemic, but it is now facing new supply chain challenges. The growing popularity of EVs is encouraging, but sales are not yet strong enough to offset the big declines seen across other segments.”

The EV surge continues

OEMs with a large offering of pure electric and plug-in hybrid cars have been less impacted by the current crisis, as European consumers continue to take advantage of the various incentives and subsidies available for these vehicles. In stark contrast, both the chip shortage and the growing severity of the climate crisis has caused diesel vehicle sales to plummet. In September, low emission vehicles posted a monthly growth of 44%, to , units, while the registrations of diesels decreased by 51%, to , units.

Before the pandemic, there were new diesel cars registered for every electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle. Today, that ratio has decreased to just Munoz added: “Shifts of this magnitude are rare, and a number of factors have contributed to the current state of play. In addition to incentives, OEMs have enhanced their offering with more models and better deals, and many are shifting their limited supply of semiconductors to the production of EVs, instead of ICE vehicles.”

As a result of the EV boom, the Tesla Model 3 topped the European model rankings in September, with 24, registered units – a % market share. This is both first time that an EV has led the market and the first time that a vehicle manufactured outside of Europe has occupied the top spot.

The strong performance of the Model 3 is in part explained by Tesla’s intensive end-of-quarter sales push. September has historically been a strong month for the US manufacturer’s registration results in Europe, on average accounting for 68% of its third quarter deliveries since Last month, registrations accounted for 74% of third quarter volume. Since its’ entry to the European market, the Model Y has also performed well, securing second position in the BEV ranking.

Due to the success of these two models, Tesla leads the BEV market with a share of 24%, ahead of the Volkswagen Group with 22%, Stellantis with 13%, and Hyundai-Kia with almost 11%. Tesla also registered more new cars than established brands including Fiat, Nissan or Seat.

SUVs on track for 50% market share

Last month % of the passenger cars registered in Europe were SUVs &#; the highest ever monthly market share for the segment. Despite the current crisis faced by OEMs, these vehicles continue to gain traction thanks to the arrival of EV and plug-in hybrid alternatives, such as Tesla’s Model Y. Munoz commented: “If the trend continues, the roads of Europe could soon look similar to the US, where more than half of the new cars sold are SUVs.”

This segment was led by the Volkswagen Group, Stellantis and Hyundai-Kia, and the big market share winners during the month were the Korean maker, Tesla and Volkswagen Group.

Other protagonists

Once again, the Hyundai Tucson secured a place in the top 10 with an increase in volume of 40%. The BMW 3-Series saw a 24% increase despite its direct competition with the Model 3. The new Opel/Vauxhall Mokka continued its climb up the rankings to 22nd position with 9, registered units. In 28th position, the Tesla Model Y outsold consumer favorites such as the Fiat Panda, Peugeot and Volkswagen ID

The Kia Ceed, BMW 4-Series, DS 7 Crossback, Mazda MX, Volkswagen Arteon, and Porsche Taycan also posted strong monthly growth. Among the new entries, the Renault Arkana registered almost 7, units, becoming the third most registered Renault model while the Citroen C4 and Skoda Enyaq became the second best-selling models for their respective brands.

Tesla’s Model 3 has become the first electrical vehicle to top monthly sales of new cars in Europe, beating stalwarts like the Renault Clio and Volkswagen Golf to claim pole position.

Sales data shared by research firm Jato Dynamics and first reported by Bloomberg News shows Tesla with a healthy lead over its rivals, selling 24, Model 3s in September compared to the 18, sales for the Renault Clio in the number two spot. This also marks the first time that a car made outside of Europe has been a monthly best-seller there.

The sales data suggests that the automotive market is slowly but surely moving away from combustion engines to electric vehicles. This is helped in no small part by various government subsidies to reduce the price of EVs and hybrid cars and vans. According to Bloomberg, sales of electric and hybrid vehicles accounted for 23 percent of total new sales in September — nearly double the proportion of the market in

However, the global chip shortage means that sales of new cars are down in general, with the EU market falling 25 percent year-on-year, with total sales in September of , vehicles. “Dealers continue to face issues with the availability of new cars due to the chip shortage,” Jato analyst Felipe Munoz told AM Online. “As a result, unwilling to wait more than a year for a new car, many consumers have turned to the used car market.”

September has typically been a strong month for Tesla, with the company often pushing sales hard for the end of the quarter. This year’s September sales accounted for 74 percent of Tesla’s total third quarter volume, reports AM Online, with the combined success of the Model 3 and Model Y giving it a leading 24 percent market share of electric vehicle sales, ahead of rivals Volkswagen with 22 percent and Stellantis with 13 percent.

That’s the hardware, but on the software side things are less smooth this month for Tesla. The company had to pull its latest self-driving beta after drivers complained about bugs including false crash warnings. An early morning tweet from Tesla CEO Elon Musk, though, suggests that the latest beta may have been restored, hopefully with those bugs squashed.

Tesla breaks $1tn valuation barrier after Hertz orders , vehicles

Tesla’s market value has broken through the $1tn mark for the first time after the US electric car pioneer received an order for , of its vehicles from the rental company Hertz.

The carmaker’s stock market value has soared during and as investors bet on accelerating sales of electric cars in the run-up to government bans on petrol and diesel cars to meet climate targets.

Tesla shares rose by as much as 9% to as high as $ on Monday after Hertz announced the order, taking it past the milestone, although they later fell back below that level. Tesla shares must trade above $ to stay above the $1tn (£bn) level, based on the number of shares disclosed in its latest filing.

Tesla joins the tech companies Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Facebook and Microsoft among the US firms who have passed the trillion-dollar mark. Apple became the first company to reach the landmark in

It came after a record quarter for Tesla in which its Model 3 became the bestselling car across Europe in September. It was the first time a battery electric vehicle had topped the monthly sales charts in the region.

Hertz said the cars would be delivered by the end of as part of its plan to build the largest electric vehicle rental fleet in North America. However, the firm did not detail how it would fund the purchase, which will likely run to as much as $4bn even with a bulk discount.

Hertz filed for bankruptcy only last year, and the Tesla announcement was accompanied by a new advertising campaign featuring Tom Brady, the veteran American football quarterback.

The rise in Tesla’s share price added further to the fortune of its chief executive, Elon Musk. His net worth was already well over $bn before Monday’s gains – almost $60bn more than Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest man behind the Tesla boss and the founder of the space rocket company Blue Origin, a rival to Musk’s SpaceX.

Monday’s valuation milestone came despite it being forced to withdraw a software update for its autonomous driving capabilities over the weekend. Musk tweeted on Sunday that the company was rolling back to a previous version, but on Monday he said it would issue a new update.

Tesla sold 24, Model 3 cars in Europe during September, taking a % market share that meant it outperformed established internal combustion engine models such as Renault’s Clio or Volkswagen’s Golf, according to figures collated by Jato Dynamics, an automotive data company.

The Model 3 may not sustain its chart-topping position because Tesla has previously pushed imports at the end of the quarter. Nevertheless, it represents another milestone in the car industry as it prepares for the end of petrol and diesel sales within the next decade in some markets. That includes a ban on all internal combustion engines in the UK, where the Model 3 is already the most popular electric vehicle.

Petrol sales still dominate across Europe because of the lack of affordable battery electric vehicles, but there has been a big switch away from diesel because of scandals related to air quality. Before the coronavirus pandemic, there were new diesel cars registered for every electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle, but that ratio has decreased to only , Jato said.

Tesla last week recorded record quarterly sales as well as record profits of $bn. The success of Model 3 sales and its Model Y crossover meant that Tesla was the biggest seller of battery electric vehicles in Europe in September.

Tesla’s European battery crown is likely to be challenged by Germany’s Volkswagen and Stellantis, the French-Italian combination of Peugeot and Fiat Chrysler.

Tesla’s ascent to the top spot – also the first time that any non-European model has achieved the distinction – coincided with falling sales among many of its traditional rivals, which are struggling to get hold of computer chips amid a protracted global shortage. The crisis has hurt carmakers around the world, although Tesla has got around some of the problems by rewriting software so that it can use available chips.

Total European car registrations fell to only , units during the month, a 25% decrease compared with September , and a 24% drop compared with September , before the coronavirus pandemic struck, Jato said.

The Model 3 is an electricfastbackmid-sizefour-door sedan developed by Tesla.[7] The Model 3 Standard Range Plus version delivers an EPA-rated all-electric range of miles (&#;km) and the Long Range version delivers miles (&#;km).[8] According to Tesla, the Model 3 carries full self-driving hardware, with periodic software updates adding functionality.[9][10][11]

Limited production of the Model 3 began in mid, with the first production vehicle rolling off the assembly line on July 7, [12][13][14] The official launch and delivery of the first 30 cars took place on July [15] In October , Hertz car rentral ordered , full-price Model 3 cars for its rental fleet.[16][17]

The Model 3 was marketed as being more affordable to more people than previous models by Tesla. Since early , the Model 3 is the best-selling electric car in world history,[18] and, in June , became the first electric car to pass the 1&#;million global sales milestone.[19] The Model 3 has been the world's top selling plug-in electric car (PEV) for three years running, from to [20][21][22] It has also been the best-selling PEV in the United States for three consecutive years, to ,[23][24][25] the top selling PEV in Europe in ,[26] and the best-selling PEV in China in [27]

History[edit]

In an interview for Wired Science recorded during , Elon Musk presented the Model 3 as likely being affordable by most people able to purchase new cars.[28] In the car was stated to be a family car.[29] In Tesla added that the Standard Range version of the all-electric car would have an estimated EPA-rated range of miles (&#;km), a five-passenger seating capacity, front and rear trunks, and promised sports-car levels of acceleration performance.[better&#;source&#;needed][30][31] Tesla said it would have a 5-Star safety rating and have a drag coefficient of&#;Cd=[32] This is lower than the Tesla Model S drag coefficient of&#;Cd=, which, in , was the lowest among the production cars of the time.[32]

Within a week of unveiling the Model 3 in , Tesla revealed they had taken , reservations for the car. These reservations represented potential sales of over US$14 billion.[33][34] By August , there were , net reservations.[35][36]

Industry experts were dubious when, in May , Tesla announced its decision to advance its ,total-unit build plan (combined for Model S, Model X, and Model 3) to , two years earlier than previously planned, in order to accelerate its target for Model 3 output.[37][38][39] As predicted, there were "production bottlenecks" and "production hell". In May , Tesla issued US$2 billion in new shares to the stock market to finance the plan.[40]

The company plans for the Model 3 are part of Tesla's three-step strategy to start with a high-price vehicle and move progressively towards lower-cost vehicles, while the battery and electric drivetrain were improved and paid for through the sales of the Roadster, Model S, and Model X vehicles.[41]

On April 18, , Tesla updated its production target to 6, vehicles per week by the end of June , an increase from its previous target of 5, vehicles per week which was previously promised at earlier dates.[42][43][44][45] On July 1, , Elon Musk announced that Tesla had met its production goal of 5, cars in a week.[46][47][48]

On February 28, , Tesla announced the availability of the lower-cost, highly anticipated, $35,, Standard Range trim.[49] However, on April 12, , Tesla announced that the Standard Range model would no longer be available for ordering online, but only over the phone or in stores. Autopilot, previously a $ option, was included in all versions of the Model 3 except for the Standard Range, while each version's price only increased by $2,[50] In February , the Model 3 passed the Chevrolet Volt to become the all-time best-selling plug-in electric car in the U.S.[51][52] Model 3 sales surpassed the Nissan Leaf in early to become the world's all-time top selling plug-in electric car.[18]

Model naming[edit]

During an interview recorded in Musk referred to "Model 2" (later Tesla Model S), and to "Model 3".[28] The Model 3 was codenamed Tesla "BlueStar" in the original business plan in [53][54][55] An intended name of "Model E" was not used owing to Ford's trademark for an electric vehicle expected to be released by Ford in early [56]Model 3, originally stylized as "Model ☰", was announced on Musk's Twitter account on July 16, [57] A presentation by JB Straubel used the name "Model III".[58] As of [update] Musk had wanted the three models to spell SEX, but settled for "S3X".[59] In early , after trademark opposition regarding Adidas's three stripes logo,[60] the triplicate horizontal-bar stylization was abandoned and changed to a numeric "3".[61]

Market[edit]

In September , Tesla announced that the Model 3 would be unveiled in March [62] In January , Musk said that the first official pictures of the car will be revealed at the end of March [63] Delivery would begin in late first on the U.S.'s west coast and then move eastwards.[64] Potential customers were first able to reserve a car at Tesla stores or online on March 31 with a refundable deposit of US$[65][66] In February , Tesla indicated that the unveiling would be on March 31, [67] Employees of Tesla[68][69] and SpaceX were given early access to Model 3 reservations,[70] and about 10, signed up without discount,[71] scheduled to receive the first batch of cars.[72][65] Current owners of Tesla vehicles got priority sales after employees but before the general public, as a reward for helping pay for the development of the Model 3.[65] (Employees and current owners were likely to be more tolerant of early production flaws:[73] both the Model S and the Model X had several problems at the start of their production,[74][65] and have since improved.)[75]

On the morning of March 31, , tens of thousands of people waited in lines to place the refundable deposit to reserve a Model 3 for delivery.[76][77] During the Model 3 unveiling event, Tesla said that over , people had reserved the Model 3 in less than 24 hours prior;[78][79] more cars than Tesla had sold by that time.[33] Twenty-four hours after opening reservations, Tesla had advanced orders for over , cars.[80][81] Two days later, Tesla said they had , reservations.[33][82]

One week after the unveiling, Tesla said it had over , reservations, more than triple the number of Model S sedans sold by the end of [33][34] Musk said that 5% of reservations correspond to the maximum of two vehicles allowed per customer, "suggesting low levels of speculation",[83] and that 93% of Model 3 reservations are from new buyers who do not currently own a Tesla.[65] The previous record for advance deposits on a car was the Citroën DS that had 80, deposits during the ten days of the Paris Auto Show, while the Model 3 had , reservations in two days.[33]

According to Tesla's global vice-president Robin Ren, China is the second-largest market for the Model 3 after the US.[84] Tesla said the number of net reservations totaled about , as of May&#;15, [update], after about 8, customer cancellations and about 4, reservations canceled by the automaker because these appeared to be duplicates from speculators.[85][86] Upon its release in July , there had been over , reservations for the Model 3,[87] with Musk later clarifying there were a net of , reservations outstanding, and an average of 1, reservations were being added per day.[35][36]

Design[edit]

In design chief Franz von Holzhausen said that the Model 3 will "be an Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class type of vehicle that will offer everything: range, affordability, and performance" that is targeted toward the mass market.[1][90] While technology from Tesla's Model S will be used in the Model 3,[91] it will be 20% smaller than the Model S[92] and have its own unique design.[93]

According to Tesla's CTO, JB Straubel, in October , most Tesla engineers were working on the 3 rather than S or X.[94][95] Since electric cars have lower cooling needs than combustion cars, the Model 3 does not have nor need a front grille.[96] Musk intended for the final design to be released on June 30, [97] but when the design was finished on July 27, it was not publicly released.[98] After the final design of the first Model 3, any further changes would be included in future versions of the Model 3.[99] The standard glass roof developed by Tesla Glass is made of the same glass used for Tesla's roof tiles.[]

Tesla Model 3 MY refresh in China

In November , the Model 3 was refreshed with cosmetic and internal changes, many carried over from the Model Y. The refreshed Model 3 replaced the chrome door handles, side mirror trim, window trim, and camera covers with a black finish. Double-paned front window glass, a powered trunk, new center console, and minor performance upgrades were added to all Model 3 trim levels. The car's engineering was updated to reflect Tesla's advances with the Model Y, including the introduction of a heat pump and proprietary octovalve that increases the car's heating and cooling efficiency.[][][]

Production[edit]

As of December&#;[update], Tesla planned to increase the size of the Tesla Factory in Fremont, California, to accommodate Model 3 production.[][][][needs update]

Production stages[edit]

In a interview, Jerome Guillen discussed "BlueStar" (codename for the Model 3 project), stating that Tesla was expecting to eventually produce , cars per year.[]

In May Tesla told its suppliers that it intended to double earlier-announced[clarification needed] Model 3 production targets to , in and , in due to demand, which suppliers[][] and many experts viewed as unattainable.[][] In the Tesla Factory, paint lines for , automobiles commenced in , and some stamping equipment for the Model 3 was operational by August [] Tesla bought Grohmann Engineering, experienced in automated manufacturing, in January This acquisition launched Tesla Advanced Automation Germany, which Tesla said would develop manufacturing processes to be used initially in Model 3 production.[] According to Tesla in late , the company expected to invest between US$2 billion and US$ billion in capital expenditures ahead of the start of Model 3 production.[]

After the two Alpha prototypes were shown (silver and black; red was a shell) in April , Tesla finished the design in late July Tesla ordered parts equivalent to Beta prototypes in August , preparing for development of the assembly line. As of August , the company intended to make release candidates for testing prior to actual production.[][] Tesla began building Model 3 prototypes in early February as part of the testing of the vehicle design and manufacturing processes. Tesla said in late that initial crash test results had been positive.[] Crash test results in mid were scored at 96% for protection of adults; 86% for protection of children and 74% for the way it handles "vulnerable road users" such as pedestrians. In addition, the Model 3's "safety assist" mode scored 94%.[]

In October Tesla said its production timeline was on schedule.[][][] Again in February , Tesla said that vehicle development, supply chain and manufacturing are on track to support volume deliveries of the Model 3 in the second half of Limited vehicle production began in July and volume production was scheduled at that time to start by September As of February , Tesla planned to ramp up production to exceed 5, vehicles per week in Q4 and reach 10, vehicles per week in [] However, Tesla missed their Q4 production target by a wide amount, as only 2, vehicles were produced during the entire 3-month period.[] Five months before, Musk claimed on Twitter that Tesla would be able to produce 20, Model 3 per month by December Tesla's actual production numbers were therefore 93% lower than his prediction.[dubious &#; discuss]

Giga Nevada had been intended to produce battery packs for Model 3 and it was announced in January that Tesla would also manufacture drive units[clarification needed] at Giga Nevada.[] In February , Tesla said that installation of Model 3 manufacturing equipment was underway in the Fremont factory and at Giga Nevada, where in January, production of battery cells for energy-storage products began, which have the same form factor as the cells that will be used in Model 3.[]

Deliveries[edit]

In February Tesla expected to repeat the delivery schedule of the S and X models: selling at first the highest-optioned cars with higher margins, to help pay for production equipment.[] However, after the lessons learned from the complicated Model X production, Tesla changed its delivery schedule in early to produce relatively simpler cars initially, in order to reduce production risk. The first mass-produced Model 3 cars were rear-wheel drive with the long-range battery.[] Deliveries began in the second half of as predicted,[64] but not in the numbers Tesla had hoped. As industry experts had predicted, Tesla did not meet the announced delivery targets.[clarification needed][][] The first delivery was on July 7, , to Musk himself[] and the first 30 production units were delivered on July 28, []

Concerns[edit]

In May Consumer Reports found "big flaws, such as long stopping distances in our emergency braking test and difficult-to-use controls", finding the braking distance was worse than a Ford F full-size truck, and branding the Model 3 "not recommended". Tesla responded to the claims with concern and, over the next weekend, released an OTA update for the anti-lock braking algorithm. Consumer Reports, impressed with the prompt OTA update, verified the improved braking performance and changed their rating to a recommended model.[][]

In February Consumer Reports revoked the Model 3 recommendation because "many customers have reported problems with the [car], including loose body trim and glass defects."[] As with Model S and Model X, Model 3 production flaws were reduced over time.[] In November Consumer Reports reinstated the Model 3 recommendation, claiming it was the fifth-most reliable of twelve compact luxury cars.[]

During long-term testing of a Model 3 in December , Car and Driver experienced a rear invertershort after 5, miles (8,&#;km) and 3 months of ownership.[] It was their first long-term vehicle to suffer such a major failure while parked.[]

In , due to the coronavirus outbreak, closure of the Shanghai factory at the end of January, and supply chain issues, Tesla used the version processor instead of the processor that Chinese users expected to find in their vehicles. This led to mass complaints. Tesla promised to upgrade the hardware free of charge once the supply chain is restored.[]

The Tesla Model 3 vehicles built on or after April 27, had a modification made to some of its safety features such as Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), this has resulted in a lower Consumer Reports and Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) score. The feature change is a move from using Radar to Camera technology called Tesla Vision. []

Engineering and changes[edit]

As production began in , the base Model 3 was announced to have a kWh battery with a range of about miles (&#;km) while the optional kWh battery would have a range of about miles (&#;km).[3][] Tesla did not produce base Model 3s in or The battery uses size lithium-ion cells.[][]

The volt (nominal, v max) Model 3 battery packs are made of four longitudinal modules each containing the groups (bricks). The Standard Range version carries 2, cells arranged in 96 groups of The Long Range version carries 4, cells arranged in 96 groups of 46, and weighs[] 1, pounds (&#;kg) in a m³ volume; a density of Wh/kg.[][]

Tesla continues to improve the design of the battery cell and introduces incremental improvements into the manufacturing line periodically.[] Tesla began manufacture of the "lighter, better, cheaper"[] cell during , with a company goal of reducing the cost of assembled battery packs to US$ per kilowatt-hour (kWh) by December , and moving the new cell into volume production at Giga Nevada during the first quarter of Electrek reported in late that the improved battery cell design was needed to further reduce battery costs as Tesla was planning to begin to deliver the Model 3 Standard Range for the promised base price of US$35, the following year.[][needs update]

The inverter for the Model 3 drive unit uses 24 pairs of silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET chips rated for volts[clarification needed] each.[]

In July media reported that a Model 3 prototype was seen in California and Nevada while towing a trailer in an apparent evaluation of a tow bar.[] In May Tesla started offering an optional tow bar rated for 2, pounds (&#;kg) available with Standard Range Plus and Long Range for the European Model 3.[][][] Towing a trailer may increase consumption by 40%.[]

The Model 3 uses regenerative braking, which was tweaked and improved in October via a software update.[]

In October Tesla released a software update including a 5% power upgrade and peak power optimization to owners of the Model 3, via software version , which showed noticeable improvements in acceleration and overall speed.[] In December , Tesla offered Long Range dual-motor Model 3 owners who had software version the option to purchase a US$ "Acceleration Boost" software upgrade enabling a Sport driving mode,[] advertised to reduce &#;mph time from s to s. Road testing confirmed better-than-expected acceleration with drivers in Sport mode reaching &#;mph in s from standstill and s with a 1&#;foot rollout.[]

The Model 3 is mostly steel, with some aluminum.[] The &#;cm (&#;ft) width was chosen to fit with automated parking systems in Japan[citation needed]. Due to its smaller size, the Model 3 is expected to consume less energy than the Model Y, and thus have longer range.[]

Traditional stability control is not made for dual-motor control or the faster response time in electric motors, and Tesla modified the control unit.[] The motors have magnets arranged in a Halbach array.[] The cooling system is integrated to reduce size and cost.[]

Reception[edit]

Tesla Model 3s in colors Silver Metallic (left) and Midnight Silver (right)
  • Car-design columnist and former car designer for GMRobert Cumberford said the Model 3 "is an excellent design" and praised the front fascia skin that he thinks is superior to the black plastic simulated grille of the pre-refresh Model S.[][] Cumberford praised the Model 3's minimalist design, and "elegant simplicity" akin to Apple products.[] Although he criticized the car's spoiler, he said the Model 3 has a design that would age well, and "in 10 years it will still look contemporary and beautifully understated, not old and irrelevant."[]
  • Motor Trend said the nose was controversial and polarizing, but probably intentionally so.[]Vanity Fair and others compared the Model 3 to the Ford Model T for its intended affordability as a volume-produced electric vehicle[][][][] and for its limited set of options, namely range, wheels and exterior color of which all but white costs extra.[] Automotive journalist Doug DeMuro said the Model 3 was better, though $2, more expensive, than the BMW i and that it was the "coolest car of the year," later clarifying that this was based on the "long waiting lists, obsessive interest and news stories."[]Alex Roy said that DeMuro's review had concentrated on hardware details and missed out on the bigger picture.[]
  • Automotive-industry analyst Toni Sacconaghi of AllianceBernstein said after driving one of the early Tesla vehicles in November that "Overall, we found the Model 3 to be a compelling offering, and believe it is likely to further galvanize the overall Electric Vehicle category." He was less impressed with build quality of the test samples. "Fit and finish on the two demo cars we saw—perhaps not surprisingly—was relatively poor." He said that there were quality issues at first with the Model X which led to some concern. "This is going to be a much, much higher-volume car, and if there are any quality issues, that could overwhelm the service centers and undermine the Tesla brand." Nonetheless, Sacconaghi was impressed with the ride quality, performance and interior space, and concluded that the 3 "risks cannibalizing the [much more expensive] Model S going forward."[]
  • Road & Track's Bob Sorokanich said the "Model 3 proves that Tesla is thinking far beyond the edges of the Model S and X. Stepping out of the 3, you realize that, as far as the S and X pushed the envelope, they were always meant as intermediaries, stepping stones designed to draw people away from comfortable convention and into the future of the automobile. The Model 3 is Tesla at its most unabashed. It's an automaker finally willing to abandon the skeuomorphism of a false radiator grille, the tradition of a driver-oriented gauge panel."[]
  • In , a Model 3 was driven miles (&#;km) on a single charge, setting a hypermiling driving record.[]
  • In early , Kelley Blue Book announced that the Tesla Model 3 was the winner of the "Best Resale Value Award" for all automobiles in the US market "with a projected % resale value after 36 months and % after 60 months."[]

Awards[edit]

  • Popular Mechanics named the Tesla Model 3 as the magazine's Car of the Year.[] Model 3 was given the Design of the Year award by Automobile magazine.[]
  • In the United Kingdom, the Model 3 was named Car of the Year by Auto Express magazine,[] and Car of the Year by Parkers magazine, where it was also named "Best Electric Car" and "Best Company Car", and won the "Best Safety" award for any vehicle on the market.[]
  • The Model 3 won best mid-size car in the Das Goldene Lenkrad Golden Steering Wheel awards.[]
  • The Model 3 was named the top-rated electric car of by Edmunds.com, as well as being named Edmunds' top-rated Luxury Electric Vehicle for [][]
  • In late , the Model 3 was also named a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS.[] The Model 3 also won Car of the Year in Denmark, Car of the Year in Norway, and Swiss Car of the Year []
  • The Model 3 was named as UK Car of the Year by a panel of 29 motoring journalists. The director of the awards stated that the car's "technology, performance and range" were converting opinions in favour of electric vehicles.[]

Tesla Model 3 becomes first EV to top European monthly sales

FRANKFURT, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Tesla's Model 3 topped European car sales in September, marking the first time an electric vehicle has done so in monthly charts, research group JATO Dynamics said on Monday.

At 24, cars registered, Tesla's Model 3 recorded year-on-year growth of 58%, followed by Renault's (RENA.PA) Clio, Dacia's Sandero and Volkswagen's (VOWG_p.DE) Golf model, JATO said.

In the battery electric vehicle segment, Tesla's Model 3 and Y ranked first and second, with Volkswagen's ID.3 in third place.

"The strong performance of the Model 3 is in part explained by Tesla's intensive end-of-quarter sales push," JATO said.

"September has historically been a strong month for the US manufacturer's registration results in Europe, on average accounting for 68% of its third-quarter deliveries since "

The landmark sales figures come as Tesla awaits final approval for its first European gigafactory in Gruendheide near Berlin, with CEO Elon Musk hoping production can start this year, despite red tape in Germany.

Last week, Brandenburg's regional environmental ministry said an online consultation for local citizens to express objections to the factory would be repeated over concerns the process did not comply with regulations. read more

In September, the Texas-headquartered company sold nearly 24, units of the Tesla Model 3 across Europe to become the region’s top-selling car, according to data collated by JATO Dynamics.

“This is both first time that an EV (electric vehicle) has led the market and the first time that a vehicle manufactured outside of Europe has occupied the top spot,” JATO noted today (Oct. 25).

The year-old automaker outsold establishment incumbents like Volkswagen and Fiat to capture % of the overall European market.

Tesla’s September rush

On Tesla’s part, September is typically its strongest month because of its production timelines. Even at the start of this one, CEO Elon Musk had said, “This month will be the craziest month for deliveries Tesla will ever have.” He wasn’t wrong. September sales accounted for 74% of Tesla’s total third-quarter volume.

In Europe, Tesla’s sedan (Model 3) and the mid-size SUV (Model Y) were the two most popular battery-operated EVs, giving Tesla the biggest combined market share of 24% in the segment. Volkswagen was at its heels with 22%, and Stellantis was a distant third, capturing 13%.

The era of EVs in Europe

Musk’s firm’s success signals a move away from combustion engines and towards EVs.

Government incentives have likely helped. Most European countries offer electric-vehicle owners perks like grants and exemptions from road tax.

“In addition to incentives, OEMs [manufacturers] have enhanced their offering with more models and better deals, and many are shifting their limited supply of semiconductors to the production of EVs, instead of ICE vehicles,” says Felipe Munoz, global analyst at JATO Dynamics.

Overall, sales of electric and hybrid vehicles accounted for 23% of total new sales in September—nearly double the proportion of the market in

Meanwhile, Tesla’s shares just reached record-highs after rental company Hertz announced plans to order , Teslas in north America.
