2014 ford edge oil change

2014 ford edge oil change DEFAULT
This automotive "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners of the first generation (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and possibly also the updated 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014) Ford Edge CUV equipped with the Duratec 35 3.5L V6 engine in changing the motor oil and filter.

Owners of other Ford vehicles with the Duratec 35 engine such as the Flex, Fusion Sport, Taurus X, Lincoln MKZ, Mercury Sable, and the Lincoln MKX may also find this guide to be helpful.

The owners manual for this 2010 Ford Edge lists the 3.5L V6 engine's oil capacity specification as 5.5 U.S. quarts.

The recommended oil weight listed on the oil filler cap is SAE 5W-20.

To complete this procedure you'll need a new oil filter such as the Motorcraft FL500S, a 15mm socket with a ratchet and a used oil catch container.

A few other compatible oil filters with their part numbers are as follows: Royal Purple 20-500, Mobil 1 M1-212, Wix 57502, Purolator PSL22500, Bosch 3502, Hastings LF641, Fram XG10575 and K&N PS-2011.

A floor jack and jack stands are not necessary unless you require the extra clearance to get under the vehicle.

The first step is to warm up the engine for a few minutes to suspend as many of the contaminants within the oil and allow it to drain out more quickly when you remove the oil drain bolt.

I was able to slide under the car without raising it up on a jack. If you need more clearance, raise up the passenger side with a floor jack and secure it with jack stands.

The 15mm oil drain bolt and the oil filter are located near the rear of the engine's underside closer to the passenger side.

It was relatively easy to spin off the old filter by hand, but it's always a good idea to have an oil filter wrench handy just in case.

Before removing the 15mm oil drain bolt at the rear edge of the oil pan, be sure to have your oil catch container in place.

Allow the old oil to drain out for at least a few minutes.

Take off the oil filler cap to allow the oil to drain more quickly.

Once the old oil has drained out, replace the 15mm drain bolt and tighten it just past hand tight.

Don't over tighten it or you may damage the oil pan or the threads.

Move the oil catch container forward under the oil filter and then twist off the filter.

If you have trouble removing the old filter because it is on too tight, you may need to use a wrench such as the Lisle 63600.

Some oil will leak out of the old filter. Allow the old oil to leak out for a minute or two.

I recommend buying the OEM Ford Motorcraft FL500S oil filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon.

Make sure that the rubber o-ring gasket from the old oil filter is not still attached to the engine.

Before screwing on the new oil filter, place a thin bead of new oil on the rubber o-ring at the top of the filter.

This allows it to create a better seal and makes it easier to twist if off during the next oil change.

Twist on the filter to just past hand tight.

Do not use an oil filter wrench to tighten the filter as it may cause damage.

Once you are sure that the new oil filter and the oil drain bolt are securely in place, pour in about 4 to 4.5 U.S. quarts of new SAE 5W-20oil.

Then run the engine for a minute, shut it off, allow the new oil to drain down to the pan for a few minutes, and check the oil level on the dipstick.

Keep adding a small amount of new oil until the level on the dipstick reaches the "Full" mark.

The engine's total oil capacity specification for an oil change with a filter change is 5.5 U.S. quarts but you may need less than that depending on how long the old oil was allowed to drain out.

(Please double check your owner's manual to verify the correct oil capacity for your Edge.)

It's easier to add more oil than it is to drain it out if you've added too much.

It's also better to run an engine with slightly less oil than required than to have too much oil in the engine which can cause damage to the seal and create leaks.

How Often to Change 2014 Ford Edge Oil

Need more info about 2014 Ford Edge oil changes? Get the advice you need at Firestone Complete Auto Care! Our expertise goes beyond tires. Oil and lube services are also our specialties. After all, like our maintenance technician Brianna says, “Oil is the blood of the engine. It’s the #1 thing you can do for your car.”

Ford recommends having your 2014 Ford Edge’s motor oil changed at regular intervals. Check the interval for your vehicle mileage in the table above. Outside of Ford-recommended oil change intervals, your Edge may need an oil change if your check engine light is on, you hear knock knock knock coming from the engine, smell oil inside the vehicle, or notice excess vehicle exhaust. You might need an oil change more frequently than what’s recommended by Ford if you regularly haul heavy loads, drive in dusty areas, adventure off-road, or drive at low speeds for long distances. More frequent oil changes generally won't harm your Ford Edge. In fact, more frequent oil changes give our technicians more opportunities to catch and alert you to any issues, like worn brake pads or a weak battery.

What’s the Right Type of Oil for 2014 Ford Edge?

Whether it’s synthetic, conventional, or a blend of both — your local Firestone Complete Auto Care has the right oil for your Ford Edge. Ford has recommendations as to whether conventional or synthetic oil is the best oil for 2014 Ford Edge vehicles. This oil helps lubricate engine parts, maintain proper engine temperature, and prevent the build-up of harmful substances within the engine. During an oil change, a technician will change your Edge's oil, replace and recycle your used oil and filter, inspect the rest of your car’s filters, top-off important fluids, and visually inspect the rest of the vehicle. You can rest assured knowing that we seek to do what’s best for your Edge by considering your driving style, and odometer.

Pennzoil Synthetics are the most technologically advanced, fully formulated motor oils available and exceed current industry and manufacturer requirements. Most automobile manufacturers are expected to recommend oils that meet ILSAC GF-5. API SN is the most recent service category issued by API’s Lubricants Group. Oils meeting API SN and the new “Resource Conserving” designation meet all ILSAC GF-5 performance requirements.

2014 Ford Edge Oil Change Q&A

  • What can low oil do to my Ford Edge engine? Engine oil lubricates moving parts in your engine. If you're low or out of oil, engine parts can grind together, generate too much heat, and cause your Ford Edge engine to fail. That’s why you should check your oil and get it changed regularly.

  • Can I change my Ford oil on my own? Changing your own oil isn't as convenient as you might think. It requires special tools and old oil must be disposed of properly. Having your oil changed professionally can not only reduce the risk of something going wrong during the service, but also help your car perform down the road.

  • Why is my Ford Edge spewing blue or gray exhaust smoke? There could be an oil leak and your engine is burning oil. It may be time for a pro to take a look. The leak could be the result of worn valve seals, fried piston rings, or old cylinder walls.

This video shows you how to change the oil and oil filter in your 2013 Ford Edge. When you change your own oil, you know that you are putting quality oil in your Edge and that the filter is being changed too. Most importantly, you get a chance to look around under your Edge for potential trouble spots. This video shows you the location of your oil drain plug, oil filter, oil fill cap and dipstick in addition to the steps needed to change the oil and filter in your Edge. For most Fords, you can wrap an old belt around the oil filter and unscrew it by hand. If you can't do this, see our parts page to find a Ford Edge oil filter wrench. If your Edge is too low to the ground to access your drain plug and oil filter, be sure to use jack stands and safe jacking procedures before getting under your Edge.

Most Fords have the oil type printed on the oil cap - it will likely be 5W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-30 or 10W-40. If it isn't printed on the oil cap, check your owners manual for the exact type before adding new oil. We recommend wearing safety glasses whenever you are working under your Edge. You never know what could be dripping down from the engine, battery acid, engine coolant, brake fluid, etc. All of these fluids are extremely harmful to your eyes and skin so it is important to protect yourself.
