What is on the HESI entrance exam?
There are nine content areas on the HESI entrance exam. These areas cover specific math, science, reading skills. The HESI entrance exam also includes a Personality Profile and a Learning Style section.

The Chemistry exam is one of seven tests that is part of the Health Education Systems, Inc (HESI) Admission Assessment (A2) exam. Nurse education programs use the HESI A2 to predict a student’s potential in a challenging educational program.
HESI A2 Test Study Guide with Practice Questions
Is the exam an entrance exam for the nursing program I want to attend?
The short answer is probably. Schools use the HESI A2 exam to predict the likelihood of a student completing their nursing program. Most programs require the HESI A2 as a part of their application process. The required tests vary by program. Some require five of the seven subtests; some require all seven of the subtests. Your program advisor will let you know if you need to take the HESI A2, and if so, which subtests are required.
I have to take the HESI A2 Chemistry exam; how do I register?
Your program advisor will help you register for the required exams. Most of the time, the tests are delivered on campus, and the cost varies from school to school. Your program advisor will have the information you need to register – location, dates, times, cost, and which exams to take. You may have the option to take the required exams one at a time, but you may be required to take all exams at once. Communicate with your advisor, so your application is complete on the first attempt.
The Chemistry subtest of the HESI A2 is usually only required by nursing programs that have a chemistry pre-requisite. Before you register for it, make sure it is a test that you have to take, so you don’t waste time or money preparing for it.
How is the Chemistry exam delivered?
The computer-delivered test consists of 30 multiple-choice questions. Of the 30 questions, only 25 questions count toward your score. Five questions are pilot questions for possible inclusion in future exams. You cannot distinguish between the scored and un-scored questions.

Generally, you have 25 minutes to complete the Chemistry component of the HESI 2A. However, schools can set their time limits; check with your program for the time allotted.
How difficult are the questions in the Chemistry component?
You are expected to have a level of chemistry knowledge that graduating high school seniors are expected to have. You will need to have a working understanding of matter and its components, atoms and their structure, the chemical bonding process, the periodic table of elements, states of water, and basic chemical equations and reactions.
What is the content of the Chemistry subtest?
The Chemistry subtest is a general education assessment. While there is a lot of information covered, there are only 30 questions. Your knowledge of terms, formulas, basic equations, and basic chemical reactions will assist you throughout the exam.

What can I expect on the day of my exam?
On the day of your exam, arrive at least 15 minutes early to complete the pre-test paperwork. Bring your valid, government-issued identification, and leave your belongings at home or in your car. At your testing station, the test proctor reviews the rules of the exam and provides you with scratch paper and a pencil. You have an opportunity to become familiar with the operation of the computer before your exam begins.
The standard time allotment for the Chemistry subtest is 25 minutes for 30 questions. However, your college program can change the testing time to add or subtract time. The test proctor will let you know how long you have for the exam, and there is a countdown clock on the computer to help you keep track of time.
After you have completed the exam, return the scratch paper to the proctor.
How do I get my test score?
To review your test score(s), log in to your account. Your detailed score report is found in the exam section. The report lists your score with feedback for each content area.
Is there a passing score?
Each program determines the passing score for entrance into their nursing program. The higher your score, the better your chances at acceptance into the program. Generally, the minimum passing score is 75%. Your program advisor should provide the information on the minimum passing score, as well the score that increases your success at being admitted to their nursing program.
What if I don’t pass?
Generally, if you need to retake the exam, there is a waiting period before you can retake the exam. Ask your program advisor for details on any required remediation courses and retakes.

Scientific Notation, the Metric System, and Temperature
This subsection will require that you demonstrate your knowledge of scientific notation, metric prefixes and basic units of measurement, SI units of measurement, and temperature. Below are a couple sample questions:

- Meters, liters, and grams
- Feet, ounces, and pounds

The first answer is: 2.509 x 10-5. You can arrive at this answer by simplifying and using exponents. The second answer is: a. Meters, liters, and grams.
The Atom
This subsection consists of questions related to the structure of the atom, including nuclei, electrons, protons, atomic radius, ions, electron clouds, and other related terms and concepts. For example:
- The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom determines:
- The number of negatively charged electrons that orbit the nucleus of an ion
- The atomic number of an element
- It determines the mass number of the atom
- The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom determines:
The correct answer is: b. The atomic number of an element.
The Periodic Table
This subsection consists of questions related to element grouping on the periodic table, as well as atomic weight, atomic radii, electronegativity, electron affinity, and other related terms and concepts. For example:

This subsection consists of questions related to chemical equations, including reactants, products, coefficients, as well as balanced and unbalanced equations, along with other related terms and concepts. For example:

- Does not follow the law of conservation of mass, which means the coefficients on each side will not be equal
- Means the coefficients are whole numbers and must be made fractional
The correct answer is: b. Does not follow the law of conservation of mass, which means the coefficients on each side will not be equal. The equation needs to be balanced by multiplying the coefficients by a constant so as to produce a small whole number.
Solutions
This subsection contains questions related to percent concentrations, molarity, Avogadro’s number, common solutions and their properties, polar and nonpolar solvents, solutes, the effects of pressure and temperature on solubility, along with other related terms and concepts. For example:

The questions in this subsection cover the rates and catalysts of chemical reactions, as well as the effects of temperature on reaction rate, combination and decomposition reactions, single versus double substitution reactions, and covalent and ionic bonding, among other related terms and concepts. For example:

- The rate of decomposition
- The fuels and oxidants necessary for the process of combustion

Oxidation-Reduction Reactions
