What is Amazon Flex?

Amazon Flex is a courier service offered by Amazon that allows you as a driver to deliver Amazon orders to their customers’ doorsteps.

As an Amazon Flex driver, you’ll be delivering orders for various Amazon products, including:

  • Amazon.com
  • Amazon Fresh
  • Prime Now

Since it’s a delivery service, Amazon Flex offers apps you can download on your iOS or Android devices.

How Does Amazon Flex Work?

The way Amazon Flex works is simple – as an Amazon Flex worker, you’ll get access to delivery requests. Each delivery has a time slot allotted and you need to deliver the order within that time frame.

Note that Amazon Flex doesn’t offer much flexibility in schedule, because you’ll be working in your own regular shifts.

However, you can schedule your work in blocks through the app. Besides your regular shift, you’ll get access to “instant offers” which you can deliver in addition to your block.

Is Amazon Flex Legit?

Amazon Flex is as legit and reliable as it gets. This is a service that’s provided by Amazon, so there’s no risk for fraud.

Moreover, 64% of Amazon Flex workers on Glassdoor state that they would recommend the job to their friends.

However, I also found that Amazon Flex has a relatively lower review score of 3.5 on Glassdoor and 2.7 on Trustpilot. Taking a closer look at negative reviews, workers complain that they would rather get more work during their shifts.

How Much Money Can You Make with Amazon Flex?

As Amazon Flex states on its website, you can earn up to $18 – $25 hourly during your regular shift.

Plus, since you’re providing a service, customers may leave you tips for providing them excellent service.

  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Live in a city where Amazon Flex is recruiting
  • You must own a large vehicle that can carry delivery packages
  • Have a valid car insurance

How to Register for Amazon Flex?

Registering for Amazon Flex is simple. Here’s the step-by-step guide to get started:

Step 1: Download the App

First, download the Amazon Flex app on your iOS or Android device.

Step 2: Register as a Driver

Next, you’ll be required to make a registration. You can only do this using the app.

At this step, you’ll be required to fill out the information about yourself, including your personal and contact information, availability, and your banking information for direct deposits.

Step 3: Consent to a Background Check

Once you’ve filled out all the information, Amazon Flex will also require you to consent to a background check. The company will run this check themselves to make sure you have a clear criminal record.

Sign Up for Amazon Flex Deliveries

After you’re approved, you’ll see deliveries you can schedule on the app. Shifts at Amazon Flex are called blocks and are typically 3-6 hours long.

You can pick up blocks in 2 ways:

  • Claim shifts Amazon Flex app offers you. The app will periodically send you the shift offers that match your availability. Simply navigate to the Calendar section of your app to access shifts. Note that these opportunities may expire, so if you like the shift, you should pick it up as soon as you can.
  • Score hours on short notice. This option allows you to find same-day opportunities, which you can find under the “Check Available Blocks” section. These blocks appear up to 24 hours before the shift begins and any delivery driver can schedule them. So this option is first-come, first served.

Amazon Flex Delivery Shift Details

There are different types of delivery shifts available. Let’s take a look at what your blocks could look like:

  • Store orders – you will pick up the items from a local store in 2-6-hour blocks.
  • Packages – you need to pick up the packages from a local Amazon delivery station and deliver them to the customers.
  • Prime Now and Amazon Fresh – you need to pick up household items and groceries from any local Amazon delivery station in 2-4 hour blocks.
  • Instant offers – are available only in certain areas. The deliveries usually last for 15-45 minutes and start near your current location.

Amazon Flex: Getting Paid

Now that you know how Amazon Flex works and how to make money delivering orders, you might be wondering how Amazon pays you.

Amazon Flex offers a convenient payment schedule, releasing your earnings to your account 2 days a week – Tuesdays and Fridays – via direct deposit.

Amazon Flex Pros & Cons

  • You’re an independent contractor (no taxes are taken out of pay)
  • Tips (although optional, many customers leave tips)
  • Flexible schedule – work your own hours

Amazon Flex Alternatives

Amazon Flex vs. Instacart

Instacart Summary

  • 2 different types of work available
  • Earn up to $10 per full-service order
  • Get $10 for each friend you refer
  • Work as much or as little as you want

Instacart is also a large delivery service provider that operates in the US. However, unlike Amazon Flex, Instacart focuses only on grocery deliveries. On the other hand, Amazon Flex has a lot more delivery options, meaning there might be more opportunities for you to be busy and earn more money.

Amazon Flex vs. Doordash

Doordash Summary

  • Choose your own flexible working hours
  • Earn up to $25 per hour during peaks
  • Get $150 when you refer a friend to join
  • You get to keep 100% of all customer tips

Doordash is a food delivery service that also recruits independent contractors to deliver orders. Compared to Amazon Flex, Doordash limits its drivers from working when the demand for deliveries drops. This reason alone makes Doordash a less reliable option than Amazon Flex.

Amazon Flex vs. Postmates

Postmates Summary

  • Work on your own schedule
  • Earn min $4 per order
  • You can make up to $1,500 per week
  • Generous tips

Postmates is one of the largest food delivery service providers within the United States that also allows you to work as an independent contractor and deliver food to customers’ doorsteps. But when we compare the payout of each service, you can earn more with Amazon Flex ($18 – $25 per hour) than with Postmates ($4 per order).

Is Driving for Amazon Flex Worth it?

If you’re looking for a delivery driver job that allows you to work on your schedule as an independent contractor, I’d say it’s totally worth your consideration.

Pro tip: Sign up for a couple of delivery services to maximize your earning potential. This way, you can switch between the apps and deliver for the app that has higher demand at that moment.

Amazon Flex

Amazon.com
I am thoroughly disgusted with Amazons new delivery system.
I ordered 2 items for our granddaughter’s 4th birthday that were to arrive on Friday the 9th of Nov.(the party was Saturday the 11th). I received emails saying our packages had been delivered, but no packages.
My husband found the photo that had been sent to us showing the packages placed at someone’s door, on someone’s porch….but it wasn’t ours!
I called Amazon Saturday, and #1) had to speak to someone, with sketchy English, who welcomed me as a “Prime Member” and told me they would put my money back on my card and I could reorder the items. #2) She said I would not have to pay shipping….of course I don’t, you already mentioned that I have Prime and we never pay shipping!
#3) I asked to speak to her supervisor who’s English was only slightly easier to understand. I told her I should NOT have to reorder because it wasn’t my mistake, and that now I’d have to show up empty handed at a birthday party for a 4 year old.
We are FREQUENT Amazon shoppers (especially Harry) and We have NEVER had a problem when UPS delivered for us.

I was told they would reorder one item for me but I’d have to reorder the other. I told her I wanted UPS ONLY for all our future deliveries, and I was not given a guarantee that this would always occur. When this happens a second time, I guess we will have to shop elsewhere!

Remember these are independent contractor jobs, (this includes most Mystery Shopper assignments, many merchandising or drop jobs) REMEMBER to adjust(SAVE) for TAX requirements, YOU will have to pay taxes that employers withhold for you. YOU are NOT an employee, YOU are the BOSS. Don’t get surprised at tax time.

I like your analogy. I am out in CA, thinking about Amazon Flex. Have delivered with Postmates, which was good. But since Uber came along the bonuses are gone. You write, quite well, No Jobs, no Hope, no Cash. The 90’s were good to me also.

Hey people wake up if you are doing amazon flex you are working for free because let say you get pay 20 a hour or 23 a hour right but on top of that you need to pay you food for that day like 10 or 15 dollars for a lunch for those 4 hours delivery plus maybe 20 or 30 dollar of gas right so know how much you have let from this 4 hours delivery maybe 70 or 85 but you still need to take that money for you vehicle maintenance in case it brake down let say 30 for inch delivery plus you are doing a lot of mile on your car and I did not put money for that insurance so know do you think this is a good jobs now.

Well not everyone lives in downtown Beverly Hills for their gas and breakfast and lunch? I make my sandwiches at home, gas is about $10 on a very bad day, so i still bring home much needed $ – Thank you Amazon for the opportunity! I always can decide to work somewhere else!

Reply

If you sit on your butt for 4 hrs… you still have to eat, don’t you? How ’bout get some food from the fridge? Don’t know where you spend $30/40 on gas in 4hrs….and $30 for break down? Change the mechanic or drive something not older than 30/40yrs. I guess sitting on your butt and getting Biden/welfare (our money) every a few months is better option.
By the way, I’ve been working on Riker’s Island for 15 (bloody) years…

This guy, even if they were working for someone, people commute 30 + miles one way easily now. Hey guess what they still need to have insurance and pay for gas…. my average home delivery home mileage is about 36 miles. Sure do I get some that are longer but I also finish my blocks about 30 min early for 2hour and 45 to and hour early for a 4hour block

There are tax write offs in states at least for mileage. .56$ /mi 100mi x .56 = 56$ it take 30$ to fill my car and I get 350mi a tank…. can figure the rest to see how much will be written off,

WORST PLACE TO WORK, This is all contractors they don’t care about NOTHING, is all LIES, they make you think you are in the best place this amazing, super incredible Amazonnnnnn, WOW !!!!, you are feeling in top of the world, “I’m working for AMAZON”, wrongggggggg!!!!, this is MODERN SLAVERY, they said 40 hour max at $ 15, but you have to finish your 180 to 200 stops, drive like a maniac to get things done, when they complain about speed to the contractor…… who’s fault is it ?,.. YOU the driver. This is a total waste of time. Making richer the CEO and making the drivers more poor.

Worst delivery company to work for. They pay way below minimum wage. No health benefits. They give you way more packages than assigned . A 3 hrs work take 6 hrs . They don’t respect there independent contractors. They review your delivery and discriminate your work and delete your account without stating why. It is a very short term and waste of time to invest your time with this amazon flex program. I had 20 friends working with them as a independent contractor and one morning there accounts was terminated without stating why just like that after working months with them in the New Orleans area. People don’t invest your time and effort because you not really independent and running you own business. You really just a abused and used employee working for this company. Also my account was terminated with them after investing months of work and time help developing this flex program and when asked why a computer always reply without answering my specific question…People best you fine a career job than waste you time with these independent contractor company that are destroying family income and your development.

I had a driver rating of Great and then in one day it went to spare because they sent me to a college mailroom that closes at 4:30 but I didn’t even pick up my packages until 5:00 so that is set up for failure

I did amazon flex fresh in VA. The pickup was located on Central Drive, VB. It was 17 packages in 3 different cities, not even 1 in VB. 1 stop was on 15th View St in Norfolk, about 23 miles away. The last stop was 13 miles from 15th View Street. I drove more than 30 miles that day.
The next day was WORSE. I had 30 bags to deliver. The last stop that day was 23 miles from the pickup location.
The IRS reimbursement rate for 2021 is 56 cents. If I drove more than 30 miles total from the pick up and between stops, for BOTH days, my reimbursement for gas would be more than $30.
Yet for BOTH days, as a 5’1” 126lb female lifting packs of water, and soda, up and down apartment stairs, I only got $30+$10tips for both days.
Amazon ripped me off. As much money as they gain in revenues each year, they could at least make all stops in one city and give you more to deliver. They are messed up.

Amazon Flex Employee Reviews

Consistent work, very long days, underpaid.

Delivery Associate (Former Employee) - Dundee, Dundee City - 2 July 2021

5 day week +1 standby day rotating days.
A typical day is 10 to 11 hours on the road +30mins at the depot for loading up + 10 minutes at the end to return any undelivered parcels.

If there's last minute changes to your time slot for loading up, or if you miss your scheduled loading time slot, you could be waiting up to 2 hours near the depot, waiting for a text or phone call confirming you can now enter the depot, to then load up , then start your route. This can really drain your energy and turn your day into a 13 hour day.

Typical day pay is £88 + bonuses (bonuses can be £30+ per day extra so they are big in theory but hard to achieve)

It's a physical job, jumping in and out your van 190 times per day. When it's raining it can really dampen your spirits, spending most your day in damp clothing and wet feet.

Most items are around 1kg but some can be up to 28kg, some are marked "team lift" but your on your own, there is no team.

Paid via bank via bank transfer, never had any issues with wages personally but damage to work vehicles comes out your wages (my depot excess was £1000 for insurance damage claims. There is some leeway for wear and tear, stone chips etc.

Important for you to know, in Amazon's eyes the customer is always right at the same time, amazon is never wrong. This means that you are the bridge between these two parties, it's always going to be your fault.

If the customer/recipient has any problem at all, missing items, damaged items or otherwise any complaints at all, including if they want to claim that they never received their item it will be labelled -

Pros

Bonuses are big, if you can hit all your targets.

Cons

Very long days, management ignore obvious issues, lots of unpaid waiting around.

5.0 out of 5 starsInformative review on expectations

Small size but does the job of informing customers why there’s a vehicle parked in their driveway. Also I live in Texas so our toll roads are 75MPH. So to say the least they stuck pretty well and did not fly off like other cheap magnets. Order arrived next day delivery with one “Amazon Flex” sign and one “Delivery driver frequently stops” sign per Qty. I purchased QTY 2 because I wanted the “Amazon Flex” sign on both sides of my car also the extra “Delivery Driver stops frequently” is nice because it’s more of a warning when I’m stopping to make a delivery. I didn’t mind paying extra because the signs pay for themselves. Overall I’m satisfied.

So to reiterate if you want “Amazon Flex” sign on both sides you will have to purchase QTY 2. There is another option that comes with 2 signs for both sides of your vehicle but I wanted the Frequently stop sign so that’s why I made the decision.

Amazon Flex Employee Reviews

Great side job, but may not last

Courier Driver (Current Employee) - STX2 - October 14, 2021

Job is simple in principle. Pickup and drop off at various locations along a route Each route you take will vary in location you deliver in, you get to decide which Amazon warehouse you want to pickup from. Ask around if you need help, someone will assist, but keep in mind that everyone is also on a schedule, so you may be rushed into things.

Amazon has somewhat of a strict customer service policy with their packages, however, and your eligibility of being a flex partner hinges on your performance. Late packages slightly penalize you, and so do missing packages. Too many and they can remove you from the program.

It can also be difficult to schedule your work at certain times as the work itself is uncertain, as is with gig jobs.

Pros

Flexible schedule, decent pay, work always available

Cons

unreliable timeslots, your own car expenses
