The Mercedes-Benz GLK BlueTec is a Solo Standout

In this issue there are no fewer than three million-dollar gas-hybrid super sports cars. (OK, the Porsche starts at $,, but with a few options, it's close enough.) Think about that for a moment: Three exotics, each costing a cool mil and featuring carbon-fiber bodywork, high-tech electric motors, race-bred gas engines, dual-clutch transmissions, and carbon-ceramic brakes, will be available for purchase in the U.S. within the next couple of years. Not one. Not two. Three. So if you want the utmost in ultra-high performance that money can buy, you actually have choices. Yet, say you want a small SUV with a four-cylinder diesel engine—a proposition that, sorry, makes a lot more sense than a mph hybrid for two. Your choice is not which one, but rather which color.

Yep, the '13 Mercedes-Benz GLK BlueTec 4Matic is the only small SUV (actually the only SUV of any size) sold in the U.S. with a four-pot oil-burner. Which is unfortunate, because a compelling argument can be made for a compact crossover with a four-cylinder diesel.

For one, a tidy (and thus lighter-weight) SUV paired with a small, fuel-efficient diesel means impressive mileage. In the case of the all-wheel-drive pound GLK—yeah, I know, pounds doesn't sound terribly light, but it's about as much as an AWD Chrysler S sedan weighs—we're talking 24/33 mpg city/highway and a combined EPA rating of 28 mpg, which matches the combined number of the pound liter Acura ILX. Indeed, after my miles of BlueTec-ing, I pumped in exactly gallons. (For the arithmetically challenged, that's mpg.) Better yet, with a gallon tank, the GLK offers a cruising range of miles. Solid.

Two, diesels are loaded with low-end torque—the off-the-line, out-of-corner oomph that can make daily driving an enjoyable chore. With lb-ft available at a low rpm, the GLK offers more grunt than any SUV in its class, not to mention the following eight-cylinder rockets: Audi R8 (), BMW M3 (), and Maserati GranTurismo S (). Heck, the baby-brick Benz nearly matches the torque output of the Ferrari California ().

No wonder, then, that the GLK's new liter will also serve as the base engine in the updated (and comparatively ginormous) Sprinter van.

Whether trudging through town or cruising on the Interstate, the GLK BlueTec feels as strong and sprightly as its more powerful ( hp) but less torquey ( lb-ft) GLK 4Matic sibling. At the test track, the diesel scooted from 0 to 60 mph in seconds flat, which is seconds slower than the gas GLK, but—wait for it— second quicker than the Lexus IS F Sport. So, plenty brisk. And although it lags behind the GLK, the gap, as I mentioned, is not noticeable in day-to-day motoring. After blowing by 60, the GLK continues to ride its big wave of diesel torque, surfing past the quarter mile in ticks at mph. Again, that's quicker (up to second at this point) than the IS

Three, the GLK BlueTec 4Matic, unlike most diesels, costs less than a comparable gas variant. Jeep's Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel, for example, demands a $$ premium over the gas Pentastar. In the GLK's case, the 4Matic's $39, base price undercuts the 4Matic's by $ Not a lot, but still.

And lest I forget, the GLK comes in your choice of 12 colors. So, choose your hue wisely, and your car might end up being as exclusive as if you had bought one of those million-dollar hypercars.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 BlueTec - Test Drive - Driving Review - MB Diesel

Mercedes-Benz

Launched in , the GLK’s exterior has remained practically unchanged since then. Sure, the angles have been softened somewhat, but overall it remains quite square. A four-cylinder diesel base version is available, but there’s also a traditional gas-powered V6. Both versions of the GLK are equipped with a seven-speed automatic transmission, 4Matic AWD and the ECO system that cuts the engine when the car is stopped.

250 mercedes bluetec glk

From the October Issue of Car and Driver.

The GLK BlueTec is a diesel-drinking Hermès clutch of a crossover that hit stores this spring as a fashionably late member of the refreshed GLK lineup. Engine geeks ought to be thrilled by its tech-stuffed liter, Benz’s first four-hole diesel in the U.S. since the naturally aspirated one in the D. Back then, life was more leisurely with just 72 horsepower and 96 pound-feet underfoot—the GLK gives horsepower at rpm and pound-feet at rpm. A seven-speed automatic routes the output to a standard four-wheel-drive system.

Two turbochargers work in series. The smaller unit minimizes lag at low engine speeds, then a larger turbo takes over at higher speeds. Two balance shafts quell tremors, and four piezo injectors squirt fuel into the cylinders at 29, psi—nearly enough pressure to slice granite. The diesel’s exhalations are scrubbed clean by a urea-injection system drawing fluid from a gallon tank located under the ute’s cargo floor.

The turbo-diesel delivers EPA ratings of 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, five and nine better, respectively, than the gas V-6 in the GLK 4MATIC. Over nearly miles of mixed driving, we saw 27 mpg, six better than a four-wheel-drive ’13 GLK we tested last fall.

The diesel GLK steps away from a stop on a swell of torque, more smartly than its second zero-tomph time might indicate. Power delivery is as smooth as a pair of patent-leather Louboutins, and the only lag is a two-beat pause when matting the accelerator at launch. Drive normally and the turbos do their jobs nearly imperceptibly. One caveat: Typical of diesels, top-end power isn’t commensurate with low-end torque, so you’ll want to plan out higher-speed passes.

Inside the cabin, the pattering of the pistons is pretty well muffled. The chassis wasn’t tweaked much beyond adding more driver-assistance programs, so the GLK behaves the same as before and offers great forward sightlines, obedient steering, controlled body motions, and a planted feel.

Want proof that whining works? Owners of the pre-refresh GLK squealed that its interior felt like an Asian knockoff, so the innards now feature better materials, revised instrumentation, spherical air vents, upgraded infotainment tech, and enough wood trim to build a life raft. The shifter also moved to the steering column, morphing into Benz’s corporate electronic gear-selector nub. That bequeaths console real estate to a storage bin with a tambour cover. The cabin now looks worthy of a vehicle that can be optioned up to $60K. (Most GLK buyers spend in the mid-$40,s.)

Benz’s stylists also lightly retouched the exterior; the new front end resembles an aloof, cybertronic catfish. It also has LED running lights because everything else does now.

Diesels usually command a premium, but Mercedes has priced the GLK $ lower than the GLK 4MATIC, giving it a leg up in a suddenly burgeoning subset of compact luxury crossovers. The Audi Q5 TDI is on sale now, but costs $ more than a comparable gas V-6 Q5. And a yet-to-be-priced diesel BMW X3 arrives early next year, likely with a $ upcharge. Mazda may offer a diesel version of its fine-driving CX-5, too, but cross-shopping is unlikely; aficionados of posh purses know the label is everything. If you’re willing to drop bucks on a badge, you could do far worse than this GLK.
