Walmart recalls aromatherapy spray that contained deadly bacteria

The retailer is recalling 3, bottles of the Better Homes and Gardens-branded essential oil infused aromatherapy room spray with gemstones. The spray bottles could contain Burkholderia pseudomallei bacteria, which can cause a condition called Melioidosis.
According to the CPSC, Melioidosis can be difficult to diagnose and can be fatal. Melioidosis is a rare but serious disease in the United States, with about 12 cases reported annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC conducted tests on the product and investigated four confirmed cases of Melioidosis, including two fatal cases, in the United States. Though the source of these four infections has not been confirmed by CDC, the CPSC said the bottle with the same type of bacteria was found in the home of one of the individuals who died.
Tests conducted by the CDC determined that a bottle of the Better Homes and Gardens-branded aromatherapy room spray sold at Walmart contained a rare and dangerous bacteria.
The $4 aromatherapy room spray was sold at about 55 Walmart stores nationwide and online at from February through October
The recalled sprays come in the following scents: Lavender & Chamomile, Lemon and Mandarin, Lavender, Peppermint, Lime & Eucalyptus, Sandalwood and Vanilla, The bottles have "Better Homes and Gardens Aromatherapy" printed on the label on the front of the 5-ounce glass bottle.
"We are deeply concerned that there may be a connection between this product and this rare bacteria. Our sympathies and concerns are with the four families that have been impacted," Walmart said in a statement emailed to CNNBusiness.
The retailer said it has taken steps to prevent any further sales of the sprays both in its stores and online.
Consumers should stop using the recalled product immediately and are advised to not open the bottle or dispose of it themselves but to return it to Walmart(WMT) in a clear zip-top double bag for a full refund.
Consumers are also advised to seek medical care if they have used the product within the last 21 days and experience fever or other symptoms.

Black Friday sales are on! Or, at least, the pre-Black Friday sales are on. Amazon kicked the holiday season off on with its Epic Deals sale, offering Black Friday-like pricing on a wide range of Alexa-powered gadgets, kitchenware, apparel, holiday decor and more, now through Christmas.

Amazon's early sale -- and the pre-Black Friday sales happening at major retailers across the country -- is good timing. There's an important reason to start your holiday shopping now, if you haven't already: California ports, which handle 40% of the nation's imports, are facing a record backlog of cargo ships, and the trucking industry is backlogged as well. That means you may not find the products you want as quickly as usual this holiday season -- if you can find them at all. Retailers from Best Buy to Nordstrom are expecting some stress related to port issues.

The cost to import goods is up too, so there's no guarantee that prices will get better as we approach the holiday shipping deadlines. If you see something that would make a great gift at a great price, a number of shipping and toy industry experts recommend you shop now -- or you might not get the item in time for Hanukkah or Christmas

Stores including Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Nordstrom, Amazon and more have deals on apparel, decor and electronics, among other categories. Here's what's on sale at these major retailers right now.

Walmart says recalled product linked to deadly infection was sold at stores in 18 states

Walmart is taking action to notify its online and in-store shoppers who may have purchased a room spray possibly linked to a deadly bacterial infection.

On Tuesday, Walmart issued a news release detailing its efforts to email, send letters and call customers who may have purchased the recalled products, which include six different scents of Better Homes & Gardens Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstones. The company said it began contacting shoppers on Oct. 22, after an investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) determined one bottle of the “lavender and chamomile”-scented spray to contain a bacteria known to cause melioidosis, a potentially fatal disease primarily seen in tropical climates.

The CDC is currently investigating four cases of melioidosis possibly linked to the recalled products. Two of the four patients, including one child, have died.

“We are committed to providing safe, high-quality products to our customers,” reads a statement issued by Walmart on Tuesday. “Our sympathies go out to the four families that have been impacted by this situation. Customer safety is always a top priority and as part of the recall we proactively put plans in action to notify customers and prevent further product sales while federal agencies continue their investigation.”

Those four confirmed cases of melioidosis were reported in Kansas, Minnesota, Texas and Georgia. Walmart said Tuesday, however, that the recalled products were available in “about 55 stores” throughout the country. It was also sold online.

The company shared a complete list of the Walmart stores that had sold the room spray, which were located in the following 18 states:

  • Alabama
  • Colorado
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Iowa
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kansas
  • Michigan
  • Missouri
  • New Mexico
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Wisconsin

The CDC’s investigation into the cluster of melioidosis cases is ongoing.

In addition to recalling the products and removing them from sale, Walmart is urging customers who purchased the room sprays to return their bottles to Walmart, double-bagged in zip-top bags and packaged in a cardboard box. Those who return their room sprays to Walmart will be provided with a $20 gift card, as well as a full refund.

The CDC is also alerting anyone who used the spray to clean any linens or surfaces the products had been used on. Those experiencing possible symptoms of melioidosis, or those who believed they were exposed to the product in the last seven days, are instructed to seek medical care.
