Elementalists are multifaceted spellcasters who channel elemental forces, making fire, air, earth, and water do their bidding. What they lack in physical toughness, they make up for in versatility and the ability to inflict massive damage.

Elementalists have harnessed Tyria's natural forces. Their powers of destruction are drawn from an affinity with the four elements that make up the world. They conjure air, fire, earth or water to assault their enemies. As a scholarprofession, elementalists wear light armor.


Profession mechanic[edit]


The Elementalists have unique power to attune to different elements that changes their weapon skills based on the element.

When one of these attunement skills is activated, the weapon skills of the player change based on the equipped weapon(s) and the chosen element. Because these attunements can be freely swapped even while in combat, effectively giving access to four different weapon skill sets, elementalists do not have access to weapon swapping in combat like most other professions. They also have the lowest base health in comparison to other professions, so they have to make up for their lack of durability under fire by managing their attunements and skills carefully and avoid putting themselves in dangerous situations. They also are very versatile, able to easily adopt a support or damage role.

Elementalist specializations are also rather unique in that each of them directly improve one of the attunements. For instance, the Fire specialization mostly improves use of fire attunement spells.

Utility Skill types[edit]

  • Arcane — Spells that use non-elemental magical energy which cast instantly, often dealing critical damage.
  • Cantrip — Defensive charms which activate instantly.
  • Conjure — Elementalist can conjure ephemeral potent weapons for them and one ally to use in combat.
  • Glyph — Skills that produce different positive or negative effects that depend on the current attunement of the elementalist.
  • Signet — Signets grant passive effects while equipped, and produce a powerful effect when activated. The passive effect is lost while the signet recharges.
Other skill types
  • Aura — Some elementalist skills create Auras, temporary defensive effects around allies which cause harm to attacking enemies.
Skills unique to elite specializations
  • Tempest tango icon 20px.pngTempest: Shout — Skills that take effect in an area around the tempest, dealing damage while also giving an aura to the tempest and nearby allies.
  • Weaver tango icon 20px.pngWeaver: Stance — Skills that provide positive effects for the weaver, or do damage to nearby enemies.


The elementalist has five core specializations, and two elite specializations:


Fire Fire — Focuses on fire magic, increased damage, and burning. Enhances fire weapon skills and may enhance conjured weapon skills.
Air Air — Focuses on air magic, movement speed, critical hits, and critical damage. Enhances air weapon skills and may enhance glyph skills.
Earth Earth — Focuses on earth magic, defense, and bleeding. Enhances earth weapon skills and may enhance signet skills.
Water Water — Focuses on water magic, healing, and exploiting Vulnerability on foes. Enhances water weapon skills and may enhance cantrip skills.
Arcane (specialization) Arcane — Focuses on boons and switching attunements. May enhance arcane skills.


Tempest Tempest — Gain access to warhorns, a set of shout skills, and the ability to overloadattunements for powerful effects.
Weaver Weaver — Gain access to swords, a set of stance skills, and the ability to wield dual attunements.




The elementalist is a scholar profession and wears light armor.

  • Main-hand
    • Dagger — Emphasizes close range, heavy damage spells.
    • Scepter — Casts various single and multiple target, medium range spells.
    • Sword — Melee brawling weapon that channels various elements through its blade. (Weaver specialization only)
  • Off-hand
    • Dagger — Provides powerful close range abilities suitable for offense as well as abilities designed for defense.
    • Focus — Provides supportive spells in form of energy shields, disabling snares and defensive area effects.
    • Warhorn — Provides assistance to you in both supporting your allies and creating disruptive areas for enemies. (Tempest specialization only)

Although the elementalist has access to only one weapon set during combat, they effectively have the ability to switch between four different skill sets by changing attunements. There are five possible weapon sets (nine after accounting for elite specializations), giving a total of twenty (or thirty-six) when changing attunements. While underwater, they have access to the trident only, offering four skill sets when changing attunements.

It should be noted that sigils that trigger on weapon swap (like Sigil of Battle), also trigger when the Elementalist swaps attunements.

Access to the weapon swap mechanic when out of combat was added in the December 3, 2019 game update.

Personal story[edit]

In the biography step of character creation, elementalists must decide which of the four elements they prefer the most. This choice is merely cosmetic and determines their starting head armor, which can be hidden or transmuted after character creation.


Elementalism is a broad and versatile field, and under the now-unfashionable "four schools" model of magic, had applications within all four. Likewise, while most other professions have a single humangod as their patron, human elementalists tend to worship a variety: pyromancers worship Balthazar, aquamancers kneel before Grenth and Lyssa, aeromancers appeal to Dwayna, and geomancers look to Melandru.

The MMORPG Guild Wars 2 has a number of unique classes, but the Elementalists - magic users who control the four elements - are particularly beloved. Everyone can find something to love about them, from those just starting out to those who are working through the challenging end-game content.

Elementalists are capable of incredible feats of DPS, but they sacrifice a lot of health and durability to do it. Are you up for the challenge? This guide will walk you through the things you'll need to optimize your damage output.

This build is meant to be used for...

  • Fractals
  • Dungeons
  • Raids
  • Strikes

... but it's rather adaptable and can be altered for use in the Open World, as well as other game types.

Note: Keep in mind that the build described in this article is based on the meta at the time the article was written.

The Best Specialization For The Elementalist

This build uses a specialization called Weaver, which can only be obtained by owning the Path of Fire expansion for Guild Wars 2.

You should choose these specializations and traits:

  • If you're in the Open World, you may want to use the Water specialization instead of the Fire specialization. Water is better for keeping you alive over time, while Fire provides more damage to bosses.

  • Use Lesser Cleansing Fire instead of Burning Precision if you're in the Open World to aid allies.
  • Ferocious Winds
  • Raging Storm
  • Bolt to the Heart
  • Use Stormsoul instead of Raging Storm when going up against lots of defiance bars.
  • Use Fresh Air instead of Bolt to the Heart when dealing with a lot of trash mobs for better burst DPS.
  • Superior Elements
  • Swift Revenge
  • Elements of Rage
  • If you aren't able to keep up enough Weakness to make Superior Elements worth it (for example, in fractals), use Master's Fortitude instead.

The Best Skills For Elementalists

You should equip these skills:

  • Aquatic Stance provides better group healing but isn't as good as a personal heal.

  • Primordial Stance
  • Glyph of Storms
  • Arcane Blast
  • Only use Conjure Lightning Hammer in fights where you are sure that you'll be able to pick it up the second time.
  • In the Open World, you can use Arcane Shield for extra defence.
  • Twist of Fate provides good stun breaking when in Open World.
  • If you need more AoE for Open World fighting, use Arcane Wave instead of Arcane Blast.
  • Use Weave Self in the Open World for better CC - especially on world bosses where it's crucial.

The Best Armor and Weapons For An Elementalist

These should be your top choices.


  • Your headpiece, chest armor, and leg armor should have the Berserker stats (mostly +Power, with +Precision and +Ferocity too).
  • Your hand armor, shoulder armor, and shoes should have Assassin stats (mostly +Precision, with +Power and +Ferocity as well).
  • All of your accessories can have Berserker stats.

If you're having trouble with survivability in the open world but want to keep running this build, consider changing all of your gear (armor, accessories, and weapons) to have Marauder stats. You'll get a huge health boost with minimal damage loss.

We recommend using a full set of Superior Runes of the Scholar on all your armor pieces - this is a common rune in DPS builds, so you may own some already. If you don't, buying them can be rather expensive. The Superior Runes of the Flame Legion or the Superior Runes of Strength make for budget-friendly options. If you're in the Open World, the Superior Runes of the Herald, Superior Runes of Durability,Superior Runes of Vampirism, or Superior Runes of the Scrapper will provide you with a tonne of extra defense.


For weapons, equip a sword in your main hand and a dagger in your off-hand, both with Berserker stats (or Marauder stats if you're in the open world, as mentioned above).

You'll want to equip a Sigil of Force and a Sigil of Impact on each weapon. If you're in the open world, the Sigil of Impact is great for DPS, but you might use the Sigil of Energy for extra defense or the Sigil of Cleansing to deal with lots of conditions.

Best Consumables For Elementalists

The ideal consumables that add to your DPS output are:

  • Bowl of Sweet and Spicy Butternut Squash Soup
  • Superior Sharpening Stone

but ask any Guild Wars 2 player and they'll tell you that any food is better than none!

If you can't afford to make or buy a lot of those consumables, just look for anything that will improve your important stats. Some examples include:

  • Kodan Incense (+Precision)
  • Mushroom Loaf (+Power, +Vitality)
  • Bowl of Basic Vegetable Soup (+Ferocity)
  • Boiled Crawdad (+Precision, +Toughness)
