Where are the BIOS password reset jumpers on a Acer Aspire T?

I need to change the boot order on an old Acer Aspire /T laptop that I have, but as soon as I hit F2 on startup it asks me for a BIOS password. I have no clue as to what the password is.

I have read a number of web pages that offer weird and wonderful ideas1 for resetting the password, but the three main options seem to be:

  1. Boot with a USB stick, which is loaded with some recovery software
  2. Locate to jumper pads on the motherboard (usually under the RAM)
  3. Disconnect the CMOS battery for minutes

This tips are covered in this video, How to Clear/Remove Acer Bios Password, and appear to be backed up by numerous other sites.

As I have said, option one won't work for me - as I can not change the boot order, due to the required password (chicken and egg).

I have located the RTC battery (I am not sure if that is the same as the CMOS battery), using this complete disassembly guide, Aspire Series Disassembly Instruction, which was linked to from How to disassemble Acer Aspire T TZ The complete disassembly guide does not show the CMOS battery, but does show the Real Time Clock (RTC) battery. I disconnected this, for an hour, but still I was asked for the BIOS password, when hitting F2.

So, I am still looking for the BIOS/Password reset jumpers. I have seen photos of many acer laptop motherboards showing the jumpers and their location, just not for the T.

1 This site, How to Reset an Acer BIOS Password, makes mention of the Acer proprietary software Acer eSettings Management, that has a pre-requisite of Acer Empowering Technology. I read a comment on this site, Windows 7: Acer eSettings Management is not on my acer laptop, which says that eSettings Management is now called the Launch Manager, from the Acer downloads page - a dubious claim. I have installed the Launch Manager, regardless, but I was not able to find the software after the reboot.

This page, ACER eSettings Management Software? was useful, but says that eSettings Management only works on Vista. Plus, this page, Acer Empowering Technology question, implies that it is bloat ware.

Two possible approaches can be used when it becomes necessary to reset the BIOS on an Acer computer due to a lost BIOS password. Some Acer computers have a special jumper that can be used to clear the BIOS settings, including the password, while others require the clock battery be removed. The battery removal process works on all Acer computers, including desktops or laptops, and it is often the only alternative available when the BIOS passwords need to be reset.

Acer Desktop Computers

Step 1

Disconnect the power cord from the back of the Acer computer.

Step 2

Remove the case cover and attach an anti-static wrist strap to one wrist and to the case frame.

Step 3

Remove the coin cell BIOS clock battery for one hour, or locate the BIOS reset jumper as indicated on the motherboard with the markings "CLRP1" and move the jumper into the "Clear" position for one hour. This is determined easily as these jumpers only have two positions, "Clear" and "Run" and they will always be found in the "Run" position during normal operation.

Step 4

Replace the battery or set the jumper back to the "Run" position.

Step 5

Replace the cover and power on the computer.

Acer Laptop Computers

Step 1

Disconnect the power adapter from the back of the Acer laptop.

Step 2

Close the lid and flip the Acer laptop upside down.

Step 3

Remove the main battery from the laptop and open the hard drive compartment cover by removing the screws and sliding the cover about a quarter inch and then lifting it up.

Step 4

Remove the two screws holding the hard drive in place and slide the hard drive out of the system.

Step 5

Disconnect the small power lead that attaches the BIOS clock battery to the motherboard and wait about an hour before reconnecting it. Alternately locate the small metal pads on the motherboard marked "CLRP1" and place a conductive tool across the contacts, and then connect the power cord and hold the power button on until the system boots up past the BIOS power on self test. Release the power button and disconnect the power cord.

Step 6

Replace the hard drive and battery, and connect the power adapter.

Tips

  • Use an anti-static wrist strap when working inside any computer by attaching one end of the strap to either wrist and attaching the other end to a grounded object, such as the grounding screw on an outlet or the case of the computer.

Warnings

  • Check with the manufacturer when asked to reset a password to determine proper ownership and avoid repairing a stolen computer.

Steps for Clearing BIOS Password Check

If users set BIOS Password (Supervisor Password and/or User Password) for a security reason, BIOS will ask the password during systems POST or when systems enter to BIOS Setup menu. However, once it is necessary to bypass the password check, users need to short the HW Gap to clear the password by the following steps:

  • Power Off the system, and remove HDD, AC and Battery from the machine.
  • Open the back cover of the machine, and find out the HW Gap on M/B as picture.
  • Use an electric conductivity tool to short the two points of the HW Gap.
  • Plug in AC, keep the short condition on the HW Gap, and press Power Button to power on the system till BIOS POST finish. Then remove the tool from the HW Gap.
  • Restart system. Press F2 key to enter BIOS Setup menu.
  • If there is no Password request, BIOS Password is cleared. Otherwise, please follow the steps and try again.

NOTE: The steps are only for clearing BIOS Password (Supervisor Password and User Password).
