Q: Starter solenoid - 1986 Ford F-150

asked by

Alec T

on November 03, 2016

i have repeatedly replaced my starter solenoid relay on the fender under the hood of my truck. the first one fried a couple days after my dad gave me the truck. i just bought a new one about 3 days ago and it has been turning right over with no problem what so ever and then last night i was on my way home and i accidently released the clutch to fast and the truck clearly cut off on me and i went to crank it back up and got the exact sane click, my solenoid is fried AGAIN and it is brand new. my battery is perfectly fine. my solenoid just keeps frying no matter how many times i replace it. PLEASE help me i have to go to work in a few hours and i have no idea why this is continously happening
My car has a manual transmission.

The starter solenoid is most likely not the problem here. You most likely have a loose or bad cable. I would first recommend using a volt meter to see if you are getting at least 12 volts on the battery terminals. Then measure voltage at the starter solenoid to see if you are getting the same voltage or the cable between the battery and solenoid is losing connection.

If the voltage is good then measure voltage to the small terminal on relay when someone pushes in the clutch and tries to crank the engine. If you do not get power then you have a problem with the clutch switch on the clutch pedal linkage.

If you have vehicle in neutral with key off you can jump the small relay terminal to the battery side terminal and the relay turns then the starter relay is not the problem but the small signal wire is not getting power from ignition and clutch.

To avoid any unnecessary repairs, have the no crank condition diagnosed by a mechanic like one from YourMechanic if you need someone to properly inspect the problem of why the starter solenoid keeps going bad.

1986 Ford F-150 - Starter Solenoid

The starter solenoid is the part of the starter that receives voltage from the battery to engage the starter. When activated, the starter drive gear engages the flywheel and starts the engine. It is possible for the starter solenoid to wear out over time. This may prevent you from starting your vehicle. If you are having starting issues, it is important to check the battery and its connections to make sure the starter is receiving enough voltage. In some cases the starter solenoid will be built into the starter, requiring you to replace the entire assembly. Other solenoids are remote mounted and can be replaced by themselves. If you need a replacement starter or solenoid, O'Reilly Auto Parts can help you find the right parts for your car, truck, or SUV.

Likewise, people ask, where is the starter on a Ford f150 located?

The starter is located on the passenger side of the engine bay, right under the exhaust manifold. There is a good access spot when you lift one side of the truck up.

One may also ask, how do you diagnose a bad starter? Five Starter Warning Signs:

  1. Grinding noise. When the starter drive gear is worn out or not engaging properly, they will often produce a grinding noise that is similar to the one that is heard if you start your engine and then accidentally hit the starter again.
  2. Freewheeling.
  3. Smoke.
  4. Oil soak.
  5. Malfunctioning solenoid.

In this way, where is the starter on a 1989 Ford f150?

Bolted to the transmission. Crawl under the truck and look at where the engine and transmission meet. On the passenger side of the truck you'll see the starter bolted to the bellhousing.

How do know if your starter is bad?

The signs of a bad starter include:

  1. A bad ignition switch. Try wiggling the key while it is in the switch. If this gets the car to start, then the switch should be checked.
  2. Starter solenoid control wire. There could be a bad connection.
  3. Starter motor or solenoid.
