Ring motion sensor light

Ring motion sensor light DEFAULT

Many people know Ring best for its revolutionary video doorbell, which allows users to see and talk with whomever’s at the door. It began as an idea on the popular television show “Shark Tank.” Fast forward to 2018, and Amazon purchased Ring for a cool $1 billion.

Since its inception, Ring has become a full-scale home security company, offering an entire  system for your home. Whether you’re looking for a motion light, or a video camera with a spotlight, there are multiple security options to keep your home more secure during the day and at night.

Aside from different motion light options, Ring also provides feature-packed cameras that not only record video when motion is detected; they also shine a light on whatever is happening outside. Customers can also purchase a separate Ring Motion Sensor that can connect with the Ring Bridge to extend the range of any of your Ring cameras or smart light options. It will activate Ring smart lights, doorbells or cameras when it senses motion. This way, the perimeter of your home can be more fully protected with Ring products.

The ideal customer for a Ring motion light or sensor is someone who has other Ring products and wants to extend the range of their motion sensing. For example, someone who has a large yard and wants lights in one part of the yard to turn on if motion is sensed in another part of it.

Nerd Pros

  • Grouping features: If you purchase more than one Ring motion light, you can program them all to turn on if one of them detects motion. That means instead of just one light turning on in the area, the whole yard can light up if you choose. This functionality can deter thieves while keeping you updated on what’s happening in your yard.
  • Weather resistant: Both the Ring outdoor camera lights and Ring motion sensor are weather resistant, meaning they can stand up to any weather without breaking down.
  • Simple setup: Ring is well-known for having simple installation on all of its products, and the Ring motion light cameras are no exception.

Nerd Cons

  • Limited third-party integration: If you are just getting into the home automation game and are looking into Ring, know that it works with Alexa and all other Ring products. But if you already have another brand of smart products and you are looking to integrate them with new Ring cameras or smart lights, it will be more difficult as Ring has limited third-party integration options. When it comes to smart locks and other items that work with Ring, the company sells them on its website, but you’re out of luck if you already have a security product that doesn’t work with Ring.
  • Price: While Ring product prices are on par with other DIY home security options, Ring motion light options can get expensive considering you need to buy the product and the bridge. Then if you’d like the smart sensor to add an extra 15 feet onto the motion detection of your products, you’ll have to purchase the sensor as well. It can add up quickly.

Extend detection range with Ring Motion Sensor

Whether you purchase a Ring light or a camera that has a light integration, you can extend the motion sensing range by up to 15-feet with a Ring Motion Sensor. Each battery-powered sensor costs $24.99 and supplements any Ring product from a camera to a smart light.

This weatherproof product can be placed just about anywhere, and allow your Ring products to detect motion sooner. That means if you place one outside of your home, when it senses motion it can tell anything from your doorbell camera to indoor cameras to begin recording. If there is an intruder, the cameras will then be able to start recording before anyone even comes into view. The motion sensors are also convenient if you’d like your smart lights to automatically  turn on prior to entering your home.

Wrapping it up

It’s important to note that a Ring Bridge is required for these smart light products to function together. At $49.99, the Bridge allows up to 50 Ring products to seamlessly work together within the home. Although it is an added cost, it is the only way to provide a smart home ecosystem with Ring products.

The Ring motion light options do a solid job of shining light on your home at night, whether it’s to alert you someone is there, or to light your walkway to the front door. For an added layer of security, the camera options with a Ring motion sensor built in does double duty, taking video of what’s happening and shining extra light on the subject. If you decide to go this route, make sure to purchase the bridge so your entire Ring system can work together to keep your home safe.

Loved by customers on Amazon.

Nice addition to my Ring of Security. I live on a dark trail so at night it really lights up the walkway and street. The product feels durable and well built. Definitely will be purchasing more in the future.

Raymond

These lights are really nice. The color of the light itself is very pleasing. They are easy to install and group together to light an entire walkway when motion is detected by just one of the lights.

Caren

I purchased four of these along with the Bridge and these things are sturdy – they work. The brightness levels are very good and they interact with your other motion sensors.

Edward

Inexpensive compared to hard wire lighting. Good amount of light and coverage. So far I love it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do Ring Smart Lights group together and connect to Ring doorbells and cameras and select Alexa-enabled devices?

You can group Ring Smart Lights together and connect them to your other compatible Ring devices and select Alexa-enabled devices with the Ring Bridge.

The Ring Bridge brings it all together in Ring app. There, you can completely customize your smart controls and create action combinations. For example, if you connect a Ring Smart Lighting Floodlight to a compatible Ring Video Doorbell via the Ring Bridge, it can activate your doorbell as soon as your floodlight detects motion.

Or have your Ring Smart Lights work together to illuminate a pathway or light up your entire yard if one detects motion. The possibilities are endless.

The Ring Bridge also allows you to connect your lights to select Alexa-enabled devices, so you can hear announcements, turn on Ring Smart Lights when motion is detected, and adjust the settings at the sound of your voice.

What happens if I don’t have the Ring Bridge?

The Ring Bridge is required to enable smart controls and notifications for Ring Smart Lights, pair Ring Smart Lights together, and connect them to Ring Doorbells, Cameras, and select Alexa-enabled devices.

Without the Ring Bridge, Ring Smart Lights will shine as soon as motion is detected or the light is turned on, but you won’t be able to customize your settings. You also will not be able to pair your Ring Smart Lights into groups, receive notifications, or connect Ring Smart Lights to other compatible Ring or Alexa-enabled devices.

Will my Ring Smart Lighting Solar lights work with my existing Ring Bridge?

Yes.

Where should I position my Ring Smart Lights and Ring Bridge?

Your Ring Bridge should be placed indoors within reach of a good Wi-Fi signal and in a centrally-located place relative to your Ring Smart Lights. Best practice is not to install it in a metal cabinet or closet, but to leave it out in the open so the signal is not restricted.

How long does the rechargeable battery on my Ring Smart Lighting solar-powered lights last? How will I know when to recharge? How can I recharge it?

Your Ring app will notify you when your battery is running low. Place in direct sunlight to recharge and store power. If additional charge is needed, see the instructions below.

Floodlight- The Floodlight Solar' battery is a Ring Quick Release Battery that can also be recharged using a Quick Release Battery Pack.

Pathlight and Steplight- The Solar Pathlight or Solar Steplight can also be recharged by bringing the unit inside and connecting it via micro USB. The unit will blink on and off as it charges, and then glow on when it is fully charged.

Ring Smart Lighting Motion Sensor review: A useful accessory, but not an essential one

Ring says its outdoor motion sensor “lets you monitor for motion in areas where you don’t need a light, doorbell, or camera….” That seems like a silly justification at first blush. If you need to monitor for motion in a location outside your home, wouldn’t you at least want a light there to illuminate what’s moving? But after I thought about how I’ve deployed other outdoor Ring products, I found the perfect use case.

Mentioned in this article

I have a Ring Floodlight Cam and a Ring Wired Floodlight mounted on either side of the front of my garage, but years before I installed those devices, I put a Netatmo Smart Outdoor Camera floodlight on my back porch. I really like Netatmo’s device. It has a more attractive industrial design than the utilitarian Ring lights, which I appreciate because we entertain on the patio. We don’t congregate around the garage, so utilitarian is fine for that location. When I exit through the patio door at night and go around to the garage, however, the Ring Wired Floodlight doesn’t fire up until I come around the corner—too late to help me avoid tripping over things on my path that I can’t see in the dark.

So, I mounted the Ring Motion Sensor on the wall outside my patio door. Now as soon as I swing the patio door open, the Netatmo lights up my exterior patio and both Ring floodlights light up so I can more safely see where I’m going. From a security angle, if someone is prowling around my back patio, Netatmo will capture them on video, and if they run toward the garage, the Ring Floodlight Cam will also capture them on video. The obvious downside of my setup is needing to use two different apps to review captured video.

ring motion sensor mountMichael Brown / IDG

The squarish Ring motion sensor measures 2.83 x 2.40 x 2.32 inches and friction-mounts to a base that you attach to an exterior wall. Ring provides screws, anchors (for installing in masonry), and the handy double-ended screwdriver it bundles with nearly all its products. The motion sensor has a 120-degree field of view and detects motion up to about 15 feet. You can pivot the sensor left/right and up/down on its base to aim it in the direction in which it will be most effective. The Motion Sensor requires three AAA batteries (not included), which Ring says should last about one year, while an icon in the Ring app shows you how much battery life remains.

If you don’t have other Ring devices…

ring motion sensor linked devicesMichael Brown / IDG

Buying the Ring Motion Sensor, however, makes sense only for folks who’ve deployed other Ring devices outside their home; particularly, Ring Smart Lighting products that also require the Ring Bridge. That’s because the Ring Motion Sensor is useless without the Bridge, and the Bridge costs $50—twice as much as the motion sensor. Spending $75 just to get a motion-event history on your smartphone just doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Most Ring Smart Lighting devices operate on battery power, so they communicate with each other over a proprietary low-frequency wireless network. When the Motion Sensor detects motion, you can program it to trigger other Ring Lighting devices to turn on, and you can configure it to trigger Ring devices with cameras—including Ring Video Doorbells—to record video.

The key advantage to having a discrete motion sensor trigger another device that has a motion sensor of its own is that the triggered action happens sooner. This is particularly valuable for devices with cameras—they can already be recording when an intruder walks into their field of view.

ring motion sensor battery indicatorMichael Brown / IDG

The Ring Bridge operates on AC power and forms a bridge between this network and your Wi-Fi network. This enables you to receive alerts from the various Ring Lighting devices on your smartphone, and you can use the Ring app to send commands back to those devices via the Bridge to control them.

The Bridge is limited to supporting 50 Ring Smart Lighting devices, and you can’t deploy more than one, but most homes will never approach that limit. Also, other Ring products—video doorbells, floodlight cameras, and spotlights—connect directly to your Wi-Fi network and don’t count against that limit.

Should you buy a Ring Motion Sensor?

I was about to criticize the Ring Motion Sensor for being expensive, but then I remembered that Signify charges twice as much for its Philips Hue Motion Sensor. Unlike Ring’s product, however, the Hue sensor can also trigger lights to turn on inside your home. That makes for an even better burglar deterrent, because it will make the intruder think someone is home. Most burglars don’t want that kind of confrontation. Ring does support IFTTT, so I suppose you could come up with a workaround, but….

To put a couple more ticks in the Ring ecosystem’s column, on the other hand, Signify doesn’t offer any security cameras, and it expects you to electrically hardwire most of its products. Battery-powered products are so much easier to deploy.

The bottom line is if you’ve committed to Ring’s outdoor lighting and cameras, the Ring Motion Sensor is a very useful accessory, but not an essential one.
