Walking in the old town area of Bluffton is like walking onto a movie set or a fictional small town created for a television show...think "Murder She Wrote," "Dawson's Creek" or "Gilmore Girls." Calhoun Street is the heart of the old town, but you can turn down any of the cross streets and find a cute store or eatery....like Crabby's Corner on Lawton Street where you can get an ice cream cone or some other wonderful ice cream concoction. Many of the stores, restaurants, antique shops and galleries are located in old homes, and it makes for a pleasant walking tour. If you want to try fresh, local produce, seafood, or a tasty morsel from a local bakery then plan a visit on a Thursday when one of the best farmers markets in the state takes over much of Calhoun Street. Make sure to walk to the end of Calhoun Street to see the May River and the Church of the Cross. A beautiful church, which was completed in 1857, with a beautiful view. They usually have docent tours during the week from 11am to 1pm-ish. The history and the architecture make this a must see. The town of Bluffton is situated on a high bluff along the May River in Beaufort County, the southernmost coastal county in South Carolina. It is located a hop, skip and a jump (or about 12 miles) west of Hilton Head Island, SC and approximately 20 miles northeast of Savannah, GA. less

Relocating to Bluffton, South Carolina?

The May River flows serenely into the Atlantic as live oaks grow seemingly more steadfast in their striking beauty. In this traditional South Carolina landscape, a quiet tidewater village emerged and grew with the ease of the tides. Welcome to Bluffton, South Carolina, where revered history and economic expansion merge comfortably on a big 'ol porch drenched in the golden hues of Southern hospitality!

Located in coastal Beaufort County in South Carolina, the town of Bluffton sits on a high bluff overlooking the May River. It was this popular waterway that contributed to the town's early success as a port town, and today it's the source of Bluffton Oysters, justly famous for their fat salty sweetness. Bluffton is only 5 miles from the resort destination of Hilton Head Island and all its amenities, and an easy 20 mile drive to historic Savannah, Georgia.

Bluffton was settled in 1825 as a summer retreat for wealthy upstate planters eager to escape the heat, mosquitoes and disease that was rampant among their home plantations. The town became a hot bed of secession meetings during the years preceding the Civil War, and consequently suffered decades of economic privation after the war's end. Bluffton began to experience a revitalization of commerce with the development of Hilton Head Island in the 1960's.

Today, you can still experience the great determination to keep history alive. On any given day, you may attend a Lowcountry Civil War lecture series, or find a newly discovered photograph at the Heyward House. This antebellum home has been lovingly restored and now serves as a museum and Bluffton's official welcome center. From here, you can experience Old Bluffton, a mere one square mile in size, but loaded with an eclectic mix of art galleries, antique shops and boutiques, great restaurants, and plenty of southern charm.

Drive along the roads that line the May River. Peer through the moss-draped ancient trees to see comfortable family homes with wide screened porches facing the riverbanks. Follow Alljoy Road all the way to Bluffton's most popular gathering spot: the May River boat launch. Folks live casually here in beach houses that may have been in their families for generations.

Recently, the Town of Bluffton expanded by 32,000 acres, annexing four tracts of land to become the fifth largest town in South Carolina. Commercial and residential developments have been springing up, providing needed space for the region's growing population of residents and businesses. Everything from two major outlet malls to trendy restaurants and major retailers have found homes in Bluffton. Driving down the Highway 278 corridor, you will see a growing number of master-planned residential communities as well.

Each neighborhood commits to its own personal style and offers a variety of amenities to suit the taste and budget of any potential property owner. Bluffton residents and their fortunate guests enjoy 7 public golf courses and 8 private ones, including the renowned Colleton River, Berkeley Hall and Belfair Plantation courses.

Bluffton is ideally located and offers everything a thriving community needs. The unique difference here is that this growing community continues to carefully preserve the town's colorful historical heritage and character. Bluffton has become a place to be appreciated in its own right. Stop in, sit awhile, and discover why Bluffton isn't just a town, it's a state of mind.

The Things I wished I knew Before Moving to Bluffton Hilton Head SC

His own soul had become the same rags, and his heart was as if ripped open from the inside. Hatred, pain, despair burned him to the ground. Like a wounded animal, he fled to lick his wounds to this God-forsaken provincial town. Once again he gave himself a scolding for being stupid, deaf, blind, trusting.

Now discussing:

And slapped me in the crack. Not strong, judging by how painful my tormentor knows how to do, so, for prevention. My cheek lit up, and I grabbed it with my palm. I so wanted to cry, but I realized that this would only make him even more angry, so I tried to. Get angry and drive away the tears.
