A good comedy series can make you happy. I was going through the comedy series and found one named Everybody Loves Raymond. It is an American sitcom and I enjoyed watching it. But a few years ago I was looking for a good comfort dish during the holidays and came across Giada&#;s braciole recipe on Food Network. I had never had Italian braciole but immediately recognized the name at least from watching Everybody Loves Raymond. Anybody that watched that show knows that was his favorite dish that his mom made.

Place the braciole back into the sauce, turn heat to low and cook at a simmer until beef is tender – 2 hours. Sprinkle the basil over the rolls, and cook for 2 minutes longer. Transfer to serving plates, spoon the sauce over the top and serve at once.

I was watching a re-run of Everybody Loves Raymond the other night, the one where Debra make Braciole and it is the first and only thing she’s made that’s outstanding in the taste category. In a tall sauce pot, heat the olive oil on medium high heat and saute three braciole at a time, just until browned on all sides. Remove the meat to a platter and deglaze the pot with the wine. Add the remaining sauce ingredients (except for the water) and stir.

My wife and I had Braciole at a restaurant in St Augustine, Fl this March. It was superb. So I tried to imitate it. Everybodies recipe calls for round steak but the flank is just more flavorful. I did your recipe exactly as you called for it but instead of adding water to the paste I added 1 cup of red wine and one cup of demi glace.

Braciole is a thin slice of meat such as beef, pork, or chicken wrapped like a roulade and cooked in wine. Typically, it’s just cheese and breadcrumbs rolled in the middle of thin piece of meat. But I decided to add some spinach to this recipe and it’s delicious.

Made popular from the tv sitcom, "Everybody Loves Raymond", this classic Italian dish is made with thin sliced beef (top round works well), that is spread with bread crumbs, cheese, and basil, and rolled up and baked in a tomato sauce.

1 pound beef, sliced very thin (use beef rump, top round, or bottom round)
1/2 cup bread crumbs
1/4 pound Parmesan cheese, grated
1/4 cup minced fresh basil (or to taste)
1 1/2 cup fresh or canned tomatoes
3/4 cup tomato paste


Place the slices of beef between two pieces of waxed paper and pound thin with a rolling pin or meat mallet. Sprinkle each pounded piece with bread crumbs, grated cheese, and basil.

Roll up the slices carefully and secure with toothpicks as needed.

Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add a little oil to coat the bottom. When hot, add the braciole and brown on all sides, carefully turning the rolls so as not to disturb the filling.

Remove the browned rolls to a larger pot or deep skillet with a cover.

Combine the tomatoes and tomato paste until smooth. Pour over the braciole. Place the pan over medium heat and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover and let cook, turning the rolls occasionally, until the beef is tender when pierced with a knife (about 2 hours).

If the sauce becomes dry while cooking, add a little water (or red wine if you're feeling adventurous) as needed.

To serve, place 1 or 2 rolls on individual serving plates. Spoon some of the sauce over the top and serve hot.

Lemon Chicken


3 pounds skinless, boneless chicken breast meat

1 tablespoon dry sherry

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1/2-teaspoon salt

2 eggs

1/4-cup cornstarch

1/2-teaspoon baking powder

2 cups vegetable oil

1/3 cup white sugar

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1 cup chicken broth

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon salt

1 lemon, sliced

2 tablespoons vegetable oil


In a large bowl combine the chicken, sherry, soy sauce and 1/2-teaspoon salt. Mix together, cover and refrigerate. Let marinate for 15 to 20 minutes. In a small bowl, beat together the eggs, 1/4 cup cornstarch and baking powder to form a batter. In a wok, heat 2 cups oil to degrees Fahrenheit. Coat chicken with batter and fry in wok until browned. Cut into bite size pieces and set aside. In a medium bowl combine the sugar, 1-tablespoon cornstarch, broth, lemon juice and 1-teaspoon salt. Mix together and add lemon slices. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in wok and slowly stir in lemon sauce mixture. Cook, stirring, until sauce is clear. Pour sauce over chicken and serve.

Marie's Meatballs is the 15th episode of Season 2, and is episode 37 of the full episodes for the entire series. In this episode, Marie teaches Debra how to make her famous meatballs. But Marie secretly sabotages Debra's recipe to make her look bad.

For dinner, Debra cooks Ray her lemon chicken. But then Marie comes over with her famous spaghetti and meatballs. Ray chooses his mother's spaghetti and meatballs along with the lemon chicken.

Debra becomes frustrated because Ray picked the meatballs over her lemon chicken. Ray then gets the idea to have Marie teach Debra how she makes it. Hesitant about it, Debra lets Marie teach her. But when Ray tastes the finished product, the meatballs just taste weird.

After some help from Robert, Debra finds out that Marie sabotaged her meatballs by placing a label for basil on a bottle of tarragon.

This is one of the episodes where Ray walks in the door and calls Debra by some funny nickname. He actually does it two different times in the episode.

Debra's lemon chicken also appears in this episode, as it does many times throughout the series.

Robert's quirkiness is also referenced, when he mentions that he washes his keys because they smell.


In the episode, the battle between Marie's Thanksgiving turkey and Debra's fish (in the Season 1 episode "Turkey or Fish") is referenced.

I can&#;t be the only person in the world that saw the episode of Everybody Loves Raymond where Debra outshines her mother-in-law Marie, by making the most incredible classic Italian Braciole. In fact, the episode literally inspired me to make my own Braciole recipe.

The hard part was figuring out how it was even spelled&#; Brajool, brajewel?! I finally discovered it was spelled Braciole and then it was game on.

What is Braciole?

Braciola aka Braciole are very thin slices of meat, most often beef, chicken, pork or swordfish, that are smothered with herbs and seasonings, and cheese and then rolled roulade style.

How to Make Classic Italian Braciole

Place the slices of meat on a sheet of plastic wrap, then top with a second sheet. Pound the meat thin using a mallet or a rolling pin. In a bowl combine the minced garlic, shredded Parmesan cheese, chopped herbs, and seasoned dry breadcrumbs, mixing well.

Place a slice of the prosciutto on the beef.

Cover the pieces evenly with the filling mixture. Season with salt and pepper.

Next, roll each piece up, securing it with toothpicks. Heat a couple of tablespoons of oil in a large skillet. Once the oil is hot, add the Braciole and brown them evenly on all sides. Be careful not to disturb or spill the filling when you turn them.

Carefully remove the browned Braciole and place them in a larger, deeper pot (with a cover). If you&#;d like, you can use a crock pot to finish them off.  In a bowl combine the crushed tomatoes, red wine, garlic slices, Italian seasoning, raisins or currents, and beef broth, mixing gently until smooth. Pour the mixture over the Braciole.

Cook over medium heat until it comes to a simmer, then reduce the heat, cover and cook on the lowest setting for about one and half hours, turning the Braciole occasionally. Alternatively, if you&#;d like you can bake this in a dutch oven at °F for one and a half to two hours, or finish in a slow cooker on high for 3 hours.

If the sauce thins too much during cooking (due to condensation) you can remove the cover and return to the stovetop. Remove a cup or so of the liquid and whisk in the flour until smooth. Return the sauce to medium heat and simmer until thickened. Finally season again with salt and pepper to your taste preferences.

Remove the toothpicks from the Braciole prior to serving.

You&#;ll Need
1 pound beef, sliced very thin in 6 pieces (use beef rump, top round, or bottom round)
2 cloves garlic- minced
4 cloves garlic, finely sliced
1/4 cup finely chopped Italian (flat-leaf) parsley
2 Tbs cup minced fresh basil (or to taste)
1/2 cup shredded Parmesan or Romano cheese,
2 tablespoons seasoned dry breadcrumbs
salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
6 thin slices prosciutto
3 tablespoons raisins or currents
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup dry red wine
1 cup beef broth
1 1/2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning
1 can (ounce) crushed tomatoes
1 heaping tablespoon all-purpose flour

Place the slices of meat on a sheet of plastic wrap, then top with a second sheet. Pound the meat thin using a mallet or a rolling pin.

Prepare the filling by combining the minced garlic, parsley, basil, shredded parmesan, bread crumbs, and salt and pepper, mixing well. Place a slice of prosciutto on each thinly pounded slice of beef. Cover the proscuitto evenly with the filling mixture. Then roll each piece up, securing with toothpicks.

Heat a tablespoon (or two) of oil in a large skillet. Once the oil is hot, add the Braciole and brown them evenly on all sides. Be careful not to disturb or spill the filling when you turn them.

In a bowl combine the sliced garlic cloves, red wine, beef broth, crushed tomatoes, and Italian seasoning, mixing well. Pour the mixture over the Braciole. Cook over medium heat until it comes to a simmer, then reduce the heat, cover, and cook on the lowest simmer setting for about 2 hours, turning the Braciole occasionally.
