Tri-band Wi-Fi increases the available Wi-Fi bandwidth for your network to reduce network congestion. Typically a dual-band Wi-Fi router shares bandwidth among all connected devices that are downloading data at the same time.
What does that mean?
If you are watching a Netflix movie on your Internet-enabled large screen TV while your kids are watching a YouTube video on a smartphone, the router shares the bandwidth across these two devices. This is particularly unfair for the faster ac devices or three-stream (3x3) n devices because their speeds are reduced to the speed of the slowest device in the network. Even one slow device can bring down the entire network speed.
In this simplified example, the 5 GHz band is capable of a maximum speed of Mbps, but the actual speed could be limited by the device capability. For example, an Apple MacBook Pro with support for three streams is capable of the maximum Mbps but the iPhone 5S with support for only single-stream n can achieve a maximum Wi-Fi speed of only Mbps. As more devices connect and begin downloading, the bandwidth is shared among them as well.
The following example of shared bandwidth shows a dual-band router in which the GHz Wi-Fi band has a fast Mbps capacity. If only one computer or device connects, the router can allocate a speed of up to Mbps to that connection, assuming that the device is capable of that speed. When more devices connect to the 5 GHz band, they must share the bandwidth. If four devices connect, then the router divides its Mbps capacity by 5, as shown in the following figure.
That means that in the network shown, a computer with a Mbps capacity has an effective Wi-Fi connection speed of Mbps (?), and other devices would also see their Wi-Fi speeds divided by 5.
Tri-band Wi-Fi adds a second 5 GHz Wi-Fi band to the network. This increases the available Wi-Fi bandwidth, which can be compared to widening the road. In addition to widening the road, having two 5 GHz bands means that the router has dedicated 5 GHz bands. That's like having two lanes in the wider road instead of one. The router automatically uses Smart Connect to allocate the fastest devices to the fast lane.
In this tri-band network, the first 5 GHz band has a speed of Mbps, and the second 5 GHz band has a speed of Mbps. The slower and faster devices are separated in different Wi-Fi connections to ensure that you get the best speed on each device. So in the previous figure, all the three mobile devices are on one 5 GHz band with a combined maximum speed of Mbps and the other 5 GHz Wi-Fi band is used for the faster ac devices with a combined maximum speed of Mbps. Effectively both slower and faster devices can run faster and the overall network speed increases by more than two times, from Mbps to Mbps.

How to Set Up a Netgear Router
A router is a box that allows multiple computers, smartphones, and so on to join the same network. From there, the router is typically connected to a modem in order to provide an Internet connection to any device that is connected to the router. This guide aims to help you through the first time setup process for your router.
In the box you may have some of the following:
- The router's power supply or charger.
- Device manual.
- Driver disc (for some models).
- USB cable (for some models).
- Network cable (for some models).
1 Connect Power
Please ensure that you are using the power adapter that came with your router.
- Locate the power cable and connect it to a power source like an outlet or surge protector.
- Plug the other end of the power cable to the router's power input, which is typically located in the rear.
- Your router should power on.
2 Connect to Modem by Cable/Wire
- Acquire an Ethernet cable.
- Take one end of the cable and plug it into the Internet (or WAN) port on the rear of your router. The port may be blue or grey.
- Take one end of the cable and plug it into an available Ethernet (or LAN) port on the rear of your modem. These ports are typically yellow.
- Usually this is all that is needed to connect your router to a wired connection.
- The bottom of the router has a label with the default access site and credentials.
- Using a computer that is connected to the Netgear router, open a web browser (such as Safari, Google Chrome or Internet Explorer).

- Passwords should be long, characters or more.

- Passwords should have lots of different character types: upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Replacing letters with symbols is a simple way to achieve this: use @ for a, and ( for c, as example.
- Passwords are personal, most services have a way to create a 'linked' account or share services with trusted friends and family.
- Change passwords regularly. Every 90 to days; this helps keep your accounts from being compromised long-term.
- If you must write down a password or make note of it, do so only in specially designed programs, or keep and hold the physical copies with the same care and respect you would a social security card or birth certificate. Remember; anyone with your password "is you".
- Don't use short passwords; computers can guess them very easily.
- Don't use a common word you can find in a dictionary.
- Don't use information that can be looked up or guessed, such as a birthday, anniversary, or pet's name.
- Don't use the same password for everything. If one password is compromised, all of the same ones are compromised across all your accounts.
- Don't share passwords. People with your password "are you" to a computer system, or a service.
- Don't keep the same password forever. Assume that, at some point, it will be guessed, seen, or otherwise compromised, and it must be changed.
- Don't write down passwords in the open, or save them in non-encrypted files on your computer.

- If possible, do not share your password with anybody.

- Some types of electronic devices like computers and smartphones can remember passwords, so beware of devices that are not yours.
- Make a schedule of when to change your password. For example, every days.

You may have chosen AT&T as your ISP but that does not mean you have to settle for mediocre performance and speeds that come along with its equipment.
The better option would be to choose your own high-speed router such as the Netgear Nighthawk for accessing the internet.
Nighthawk works perfectly with Xfinity, but does it work with AT&T?
Netgear Nighthawk works with AT&T Fiber and AT&T U-Verse.
To set it up, enable DMZplus or IP Passthrough for the Netgear Nighthawk Router in the firewall settings for the AT&T Gateway.
Disable WiFi on the AT&T Gateway and connect it to the WAN port of the Nighthawk to start accessing the internet.
How to Set up Netgear Nighthawk Router with AT&T Internet
Step 1: Log in to your AT&T Gateway
Log in to your AT&T modem settings by typing from your computer.
Your login credentials should be written on the gateway in case you dont know it.
Remember that your computer needs to be connected to the AT&T Gateway using WiFi or an ethernet cable.
Step 2: Connect Your Netgear Nighthawk to the AT&T Gateway Using an Ethernet Cable
Run an ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports on the AT&T Gateway to the WAN port on your Netgear Nighthawk.
This is very important for the next step.
Step 3: Enable DMZplus or IP Passthrough on the AT&T Gateway
Depending on whether you have a PACE modem or an Arris modem, you will have either of the two options in your gateway settings.
To enable this, simply navigate to Firewall in the gateway settings.
For Pace gateways, simply choose your Netgear Nighthawk from the list of devices connected to your internet under Applications, pinholes, and DMZ.
It should be the only wired connection on the list. After selecting the Nighthawk, click on allow all applications to enable DMZplus mode.
For Arris BGW gateways, you need to enable the option of IP Passthrough.
It is also located under Firewall. You will now be prompted to enter the access code of your device.
This must be printed on your modem. Once you enter the access code, select DHCP Fixed and click on your Netgear Nighthawk router.
Save your settings to enable IP Passthrough.
The point of this step is to bridge your gateway to make it function solely as a modem and not as a WiFi router.
Keep in mind that IP Passthrough and DMZplus while being similar to a bridge mode is not exactly the same.
Step 4: Disable WiFi on the AT&T Gateway
In the gateway settings, navigate to WiFi and disable both the GHz and 5 GHz WiFi.
This will make ensure that there is no interruption between the WiFi signals of the Nighthawk with that of the Gateway.
Step 5: Restart All Devices
This is very important because a restart is necessary for the new settings to take effect.
Step 6: Personalize Your Netgear Nighthawk Network
Install the Nighthawk app and follow the onscreen instructions to connect your mobile device to the WiFi network of your Netgear Nighthawk.
The default SSID and password for your network must be written on the Nighthawk router.
Keep in mind that while personalizing your network, if you choose a new SSID and password, you will have to manually connect all the devices in your house to the new network.
However, if you use the same SSID and password, they will automatically shift to the new WiFi.
Note: If you are unable to access the internet using your Nighthawk after completing all the steps, perform a hard reset of your Nighthawk router and try again.

You might need to have wired connections for many devices, especially if you are a gamer or need seamless internet for work etc.
I recommend a gigabit ethernet switch (on Amazon) to add more LAN ports to your Nighthawk router.
