How to buy the best mini fridge for you

When shopping for a mini fridge, the most important features to look out for include size, adjustability, design and other extras like a freezer section. Some fridges are designed specifically to hold cans or glass bottles, which can be useful if you only want to use the fridge for drinks.

There’s no one set size for mini fridges, so you’ll want to measure your space to make sure it fits.

Pay attention to capacity, as well — this will indicate how much food you can actually fit into the fridge. Most mini fridges we found fall between 2-5 cubic feet of storage.

Some fridges have adjustability features, like removable shelves or drawers for easy cleaning. Others have a reversible door that can open in both directions, allowing you to place the fridge anywhere in the room.

Certain brands have unique added features, including:

  • Separate freezers to keep frozen food extra cold
  • Built-in door shelves that can specifically hold cans or bottles
  • Clear glass doors that allow you to view the contents of your fridge without opening it

When it comes to keeping cold brew and late-night snacks chilled, a great mini fridge is a total must-have. But with so many different configurations and sizes, it can be tricky to decide which is the best mini fridge for you.

Our Good Housekeeping Institute kitchen experts have a long history of testing kitchen appliances, including full-sized refrigerators for their ability to keep a range of grocery staples cool. While we haven't put mini fridges to a cross-category test, our pros recommend using mini fridges only for chilling beverages or storing lunches for a couple days, max. That's because they can rarely be counted on to keep perishable foods cold for long periods of time. In order for food to be safe, meats, dairy, and cut fruits or veggies must be kept below 40°F (and above 32°F, if you don't want them to freeze). Our Lab tests on compact fridges found that most temperatures hovered at the high end of this range, so you don't want to risk it.

Whatever your purpose (whether it's for storing skincare or holding a couple of beers), here are the best mini fridges of 2020 according to Lab experts, rave product reviews, and top-searched refrigerator brands like Midea and Danby:

What size mini fridge should I get for a college dorm room?

Dorm rooms are small (and often shared with one or more person), so it really depends on how much space you have. Mini fridges, also known as compact refrigerators, vary in size from 1.7 cubic feet up to 4.5 cubic feet. The smallest cube-shaped mini fridge measures 17 inches wide, 18 7/8 inches deep and 20 1/2 inches tall. A larger 4.5 cubic foot model with a separate freezer measures around 19 inches wide, 20 inches deep and 43 inches tall. If you're unsure about what size to get, wait until after move-in day so you can measure the space you have available.

Standing at just a little over 27 inches tall, this mini fridge provides just enough space for snacks and drinks. • Great value pick at under $100

Most Popular Mini Fridge on Amazon

Compact Refrigerator

This super-compact Midea is well-loved on Amazon with over 1,000 positive reviews, but it really is a no-frills buy. With just one shelf, it gets the job done keeping food and drinks cool (and consumers say it can hold 24 bottles of water!) and it even has a very small freezer. We like that the legs are adjustable so you can fine-tune it to fit your space.

  • Pretty quiet
  • Compact 1.6 cu. ft. interior
  • Requires frequent defrost

Reviewers especially love that the freezer has it's own door, which isn't always a common feature in mini fridges.

COSTWAY amazon.com

The ultimate dorm addition, this COSTWAY option is just like your regular fridge, only smaller (reviewers even say it's just as quiet). It has a separate freezer, removable glass shelves for easy cleaning, an ice tray, crisper drawer, an internal thermometer so you can easily adjust the temperature, and you can even adjust the shelves for taller things.

  • Removable shelves

Best Mini Fridge for Beer

Contemporary Classic All Refrigerator

While this Danby mini fridge doesn't come with a freezer, our pros like that there's space for a tall bottle or milk jug on the door (something many others don't offer). Not to mention, the door is reversible so you can change which side it opens on — great for making it work in small spaces. Also included are can holders on the door, perfect for extra beer or soda storage. They won't work for anything else, so if you don't drink sparkling water or fizzy drinks, this may not be the best pick for you.

  • Includes plenty of storage for all kinds of beverages

Best Mini Fridge for Skincare

Mini Fridge Electric Cooler and Warmer
Cooluli amazon.com

This one takes the idea of mini to a whole new level (it weighs four pounds!) You can fit six cans inside, but it's also commonly used to store skincare items. You can even take it with you on road trips since it can be powered through a USB port. There's also a warming function, but this fridge is really just for cooling — not chilling or keeping perishables at a safe temp.

  • Shouldn't be used for perishables

Most Stylish Mini Fridge

Retro Compact Refrigerator

Make a statement with this fun retro Daewoo fridge. Consumers love that there isn't a can-only storage compartment, so it's more flexible for the items you actually want to keep cool. Keep in mind, it is slightly taller than most other picks at 36" high, but you can get it in a 2.8 cubic-foot size.

Best Mini Fridge for Beverages

14-Bottle Wine Cooler
Insignia bestbuy.com

If you're just looking to keep beverages cool, this Insignia pick is a stylish solution. Sure, it's technically a wine cooler, but it'll keep any other drink from cold brew to kombucha perfectly chilled. Plus, the clear door lets you see what's inside without ever opening it.

  • Can also store canned and bottled drinks

Compact Refrigerators

Compact Refrigerators

Compact refrigerators offer an ideal, space-saving solution for cooling food and drinks. They’re a popular pick for dorm rooms, kitchenettes and some offices. Whether you’re looking for a compact way to keep food and drinks chilled, or you're adding an additional fridge to your home or office, you’ll find a mini refrigerator to fit your needs. Sam’s Club® carries a wide variety of appliances, including many refrigerators and freezers, ranging from counter-top options to taller designs.

What type of mini refrigerator is best for your space?

If you’re looking for a compact fridge that is easily portable but small enough to rest on a counter, then consider getting a cube mini-fridge. Named after their shape, these mini fridges are relatively light and fit easily in most spaces.

Mid-size compact fridges are another option. Slightly taller than a cube fridge, they’re a suitable pick for under-counter installations. Counter-high mini fridges (or tall mini fridges) are the largest options. They come with about 4 cubic feet of space, offer better energy efficiency and may include features such as a freezer, lighting or lock. These mini refrigerators are a good fit for office kitchens and garages.

What are some of the features to look for in a compact fridge?

A major consideration when picking a compact fridge is deciding on whether or not you want a freezer. If you only intend to use your mini fridge to cool beverages, then a compact refrigerator without a freezer is a good fit. But if you plan to store frozen food or other perishables, consider getting a compact mini fridge with a built-in freezer. Some refrigerator brands have the freezer built into the fridge while others offer a separate freezing compartment.

Another feature to consider when choosing a mini refrigerator is its interior layout. You’ll find compact refrigerators designed with adjustable shelves, which give you more flexibility when storing items. Other models offer door-mounted shelves that are ideal for storing cans. You’ll also find fridges that come with glass or wire shelves. Wire shelves allow for more efficient air flow while glass shelves are great at containing spills.

Sam’s Club is home to a wide collection of options, including popular brands like Igloo fridges, Haier fridges and Whynter mini fridges. Compact refrigerators also come in different builds and finishes. You'll find mini fridges with glass doors, double doors and even stainless steel mini fridges.

5 Best Mini Fridges, According to Food Network Kitchen

Whether it's in a pantry, den or dorm room, a small fridge can come in handy!

Keep in mind: Price and stock could change after publish date, and we may make money from these links.

By Sharon Franke for Food Network Kitchen

Our Top Mini Fridge Picks:

Mini fridges are great for keeping beverages and snacks in a family or rec room or stashing brought-from-home lunches in an office. If space and the school allow, they’re super useful in dorm rooms for dinner fixin’s and midnight munchies. However they vary in size, features and how well they keep foods cool. We’ve rounded up a selection of models that maintain safe temperatures for food safety in a variety of sizes so there’s one to select regardless of your needs.

Things to Consider About Mini Fridges:

  • Avoid any models that use thermoelectric technology. They don’t keep foods at a set temperature but rather change in relationship to the room condition. When it’s very warm, they don’t cool to an acceptable level for food safety. And, when the temperature changes, the temp in the fridge goes up or down. Foods stay best when they’re stored at a steady temp.
  • The freezer in a mini fridge isn’t intended for long-term storage. It should only be used for storing meats for a few days, making a tray of ice cubes or keeping ice cream at a scoopable consistency.
  • It’s a good idea to buy a refrigerator thermometer and check the temperatures periodically. Don’t rely on one reading but take several over a few hours. To keep foods safe, the fresh food compartment should be no higher than 40 degrees F and 37 degrees F is optimal. Ideally, the freezer should stay at 0 degrees F or lower. If it’s above 5 degrees F, the freezer’s not reliable for long term food storage.
  • Check the yellow Energy Guide Label to get an estimate of how much it will cost to run the refrigerator and how that cost compares to similar models. If possible, choose a model with the Energy Star label. In addition to helping to keep your electricity bill down, it’s better for the environment.
  • When you load the fridge compartment with food, leave space for cold air to fully circulate around items.
  • You may have to defrost the freezer, an "ancient" procedure that may not be familiar to you. It involves turning the fridge off and allowing all the ice that builds up on the walls of the freezer to melt off.
  • Don’t keep a compact refrigerator in an unheated garage or basement. They’re not designed to work in temperatures below those in a home.

How We Picked

To select our best mini fridges, we relied on our years of experience testing refrigerators and in-depth knowledge of the category. We also checked to see what other reviewers recommend as well as what home users have to say. Our most important criteria was the ability to maintain safe temperatures for food storage, but we also took into consideration size and features. On this list you’ll find a variety of models for different needs and situations.
