  • Positive neutral lock position for levers provides added safety.
  • Brake & Go operator-presence system returns levers to the neutral position when the brake pedal is actively engaged.
  • Starting the machines is as easy as starting a car. It no longer matters if the control levers are extended out or pulled in, as long as the parking brake is engaged. Just turn the key and go.
  • Wide-bend, large-diameter steering levers swing out easily for entry and exit from the operator platform.

The Brake & Go starting system is a John Deere exclusive. This feature makes the starting process on all ZTrak™ mowers easier, while also making it possible to remove two interlock switches from the machine.

The Brake & Go starting procedure helps a novice operator look and feel like a professional. To start the machine, the parking brake must be engaged. It does not matter whether the power take-off (PTO) switch is on or off, nor does it matter if the control levers are pulled in or in the out position.

As long as the parking brake is engaged, the machine will start. When the parking brake is applied, the control levers cannot be moved to the forward or reverse positions.

Adjustable levers

The motion control levers have two height positions and can also be adjusted forward or rearward within the slotted holes. The levers should be adjusted so the operator can achieve a full range of control operation comfortably.

  • Key switch
  • Hour meter
  • Throttle
  • Separate choke control

    • No choke required for the electronic fuel injection (EFI) models
Easy-to-operate height-of-cut adjustment enables on-the-go changes
Mower deck height adjustment knobMower deck height adjustment knob

An easy-to-use cutting-height lift system allows the operator to adjust the mower deck height with no tools and minimal effort. The easy-to-grip knob allows operators to dial in the desired height of cut (HOC).

Cutting height can be adjusted from approximately 1 in. to 5.5 in. (2.5 cm to 14 cm). Each increment on the knob adjusts the HOC approximately 0.25 in. (0.64 cm). The deck can also be raised and locked in a transport position to provide maximum ground clearance when moving the machine from one area to another.

The transport lock function allows the deck to be returned to the previous HOC after being in the transport position:

  • Use the foot-lift pedal to lift the deck and engage the transport lock.
  • Rotate the knob to adjust from 1 in. to 5.5 in. (2.5 cm to 14 cm) in 0.25-in. (0.64 cm) increments.

This design increases productivity by allowing operators to change the cutting height without having to leave the seat.

Where’s The Best Place For Lights On a Zero Turn?

On my 60" Laser I mounted two 35W halogen lights under the the front floor pan (just under the area where my feet rest). Mounted under there, they are well protected and never get hit. I akso mounted one on the back of the machine so there is light for backing up.

I agree that this is an awesome idea. In the fall it is not unusual to require a little extra time to finish up as it gets dark. Personally I never have problems with bugs attracted by the lights. It is cooler at the time of year the lights are used (so fewer/no bugs).

The lights are wired into the electrical system with a fuse and a neatly mounted switch on the dash (1 for front lights, 1 for rear).

I have them wired in such a way that I can use the lights with the key off - just the way I wanted it. You could do it either way. I am smart enough not to leave them on and walk away.

You have to be careful to choose the correct wattage of lights. You have to determine the output of the alternator for the particular engine you have, figure what the electric clutch uses (biggest power draw), and other devices use, then figure out what is left to run lights. If the total you are drawing for everything is more than the alternator puts out, you will run the battery down. If you stay below the threshold, you can run the lights all day and the system will keep up.

Best LED lights for zero turn mower reviews

These lighting kits are often designed for DIY installation and are a nice choice if you fancy do-it-yourself stuff.

Don’t fret if DIY projects are not your thing- we will teach you how to install led lights on lawn tractor after this.

1. Nilight LED Light Bar, 20-Inch 126w Spot Flood Combo,

This 126W high intensity LED product perfectly mixes and matches flood and spot beams and has one of the longest long illumination distances to go with a broader view.

The pure white 6000K-6500K color temperature helps it produce great natural white light effect when switched on at night.

Built-in heat-dissipating silicone gel along with the redesigned aluminum alloy housing means you’ll have it for over 30000 hours.

You’ll receive an adjustable mounting bracket with the package and it installs within minutes.

Pros

  • Waterproof (IP67), dustproof, and anti-corrosive.
  • High-quality unit (FCC, CE, and RoHS Certified).
  • Universal fit for lawn mowers.

Cons

2. Northpole Light LED Light Bar

This is another light bar to consider as it provides a uniform beam pattern that will light up the yard impressively when it starts to get dark.

No products found.

The 18W bar offers 1980 lumens of brightness at 6000K color temperature and works great on zero turn mowers.

Despite being among the brightest options, it won’t draw too much power thanks to the eco-friendly consumption.

You are also guaranteed many seasons of grass trimming thanks to the tough design (Black painted reinforced aluminum housing, stainless steel mounting bracket, shatterproof lenses, IP67 waterproof LED construction, etc.)

It comes with a 1-year Worry-free warranty.

Pros

  • Incredibly easy to install.
  • Heavy duty.
  • Low energy draw.

Cons

  • The customer service is sometimes slow to respond.

3. Ambother Pods Light LED Bar

For those looking for the absolute maximum brightness, these Ambother LED pod lights are potentially the best option.

No products found.

Unlike any of the other alternatives, these produce an eyecatching 12800 lumens in total (6000K super bright white light) and will effectively turn mowing nights to day.

These are excellent all-round lights for zero turn mowers and provide extreme distant plus wider view area lighting because of the spot-flood combo beam design (15° spot/170° flood).

Like their competition, these meet IP67 waterproof international standard and are built for the long haul (they’re housed by aluminum alloy die-casting shelland are shockproof too).

In fact, the manufacturer promises over 100000 running hours!

Pros

  • Crisp lighting for night time cutting.
  • Amazing lifespan.
  • Fit for dozens of z-turn brands.

Cons

  • A tad pricier than Northpole 18w light.

Lawn equipment to pick up acorns

Zero turn mower lights shopping guide

Variables like lumens and the color band are big factors (because of brightness) but at the end of the day, there’s more to it than that.

Here is what else you should care about.

1.      Will it fit your z-turn mower?

You must be careful and choose lights with the right wattage and this call for you to have an idea about the output the alternator in your particular mower’s engine can achieve.

The best way to work out if it will work is by totaling the draw of all the electric devices (starting with the clutch), and see what’s left.

Be sure to select lights that can run with the unused draw to avoid running the battery down.

2.      Will it mount on your Z-Turn without too much hassle?

You don’t want to spend hours on end with jumper wires and electrical testing tools trying to figure out how to mount and have it work.

For this reason, select lights for zero turn mowers that have clearly illustrated directions to allow easily run the wiring and do all hookup.

3.      HID or LED?

People often split hairs debating HID vs LED and it’s good that we clear the air.

Overall, LED lights tend to be cheaper and have a longer lifespan since they have no moving parts/filaments.

Plus, most are shockproof.

On the other hand, HID lights are definitely more expensive but, in return, you get very bright lighting out the front.

The other major problem with HID is that they’re significantly more fragile compared to their rivals and that could sway your decision.

All said and done, most people seem to favor LED for lawn tractors perhaps because of their friendlier pricing.

And just so that you know, spot beam/pencil beam LEDs generally shine as bright and as far as HID lights.

4.      Others

  • Is there a switch or does the light turn on with a key? – Both options are available.
  • How great is the customer support? If it’s a high quality product, the manufacturer is likely to offer you an extended warranty and 24-hour friendly support (phone/email).

Leaf plow for zero turn mower

How to wire lights on zero turn mower

Before we start, understand that it’s best to fix the lights where they won’t become a hindrance.

Having said that, the roll bar, front of the caster wheel housing, or in front of the mower’s control levers happen to be some of the most practical positions for new lights for most folks.

The steps are not that intimidating as you’ll learn next (your manual has the complete procedure):

Step 1:Drill a suitably-sized hole (possibly 1/16 -1/8-inch bigger than your light’s mounts).

Step 2: Push the lights’ mount straight through the hole you’ve just made. Place the accompanying lock washer onto the mount and proceed to thread the mount’s retaining bolt onto the threads.

Step 3: Tighten the stud but make sure that the light stands in your desired position before doing this.

Step 4: Locate the battery and detach the negative cable end (the black one) from the battery terminal.

Step 5: Crimp an electrical connector to your LED light relay. Do the same for negative wire on your light.

Step 6: Route the two to battery area (crimp a wire with suitable length if necessary).

Step 7: Look for a bolt (on the frame) that you can connect the 2 wire connectors for the important light as well as light relay grounding. Attach them to the identified nut.

Check that that they’re not touching the deck or any moving part (Zip tie either of them out of the way where necessary).

Step 8: Feed the headlights positive wire to the lawnmower’s frame until you come to a convenient spot where you can easily connect it to the battery’s live cable.

Step 9: Cut the positive (red) battery cable with a wire cutter and secure the free positive light’s electrical wire to the positive inlet. Crimping a connector to the light cable will help you fasten it well.

Step 10: Again double check that the cabling doesn’t have contact with any moving components.

Step 11: Connect the negative cable back to its battery terminal and test your lights.

Don’t let bad weather or a tight schedule separate you from your mowing hobby.

Just rig up the lights for zero turn mowers you have loved most and get down to work.

The only thing that could spoil the fun after night settles in is the insects swarming all over you and the mower.

Other than that- and it’s something you can control with chemical-based or even natural bug repellants- mowing at night can be enormously pleasurable.

2016 JD Z970r ZRT head light / emergency - safety lite install.

Hello everybody. Long time no post (my bad 😛 )

I haven’t been doing a lot of welding lately, but I did just finish up a project of putting front and rear lights on my zero turn. I did it without drilling a single hole anywhere on the mower. My zero turn is a 54″ John Deere Z425, but it should work on your MTD, Cub Cadet, Hustler, Scat, Ariens, or other mower just the same.

We recently moved to a house that has about an acre and sometimes after work and dinner it is already getting dark out. I have been caught multiple times this month mowing in the dark and not being able to tell where I was going. I finally got annoyed enough to get on Amazon and do something about it.

I ordered these three parts to do this project:

A 21″ light bar, two 4″ round LED lights and a wiring harness with water resistant switch.

Other tools you might need to do this installation yourself:

When these parts came in, I was actually pretty impressed with the quality. I had looked at the lights at Northern Tool, but they were just too expensive to put on a lawn mower. These turned out to be great quality, pretty bright, and CHEAP. I will touch on it later, but the wiring harness actually turned out to be nicest wiring harness kit I have EVER dealt with. Unbelievable how easy the harness made these lights to install.

Before you order, make sure you measure your mower to see what will fit. In my case the 21″ light bar fits perfectly between the front caster wheels, and the 6″ round lights work nicely to light up the rear without being too large. I don’t have a roll bar, so if you would rather mount the lights to your roll bar then you will need to take that into consideration.

WARNING: Remember that roll bars are ENGINEERED to protect you in a rollover, DO NOT drill or weld on any roll over protective system!!!! You instantly decertify the ROPS and put yourself at risk of injury if it fails. If you want to put lights on the roll over bar, consider some kind of clamp that does NOT require drilling or welding, or try to find an existing bolt hole that can be used.

I specifically chose this light bar because the mounting points are in a channel that can be moved back and forth. This is very important in my case because the bolt holes I wanted to use are offset due to the way the deck is set up (as seen in above picture).

TIP: I like to use heat shrink butt connectors. Once you strip the wires and crimp them inside the connector, you then take a lighter and use heat to shrink the ends. These are available as a kit on Amazon and are totally worth it. I won’t even buy the non-heat shrink connectors anymore.

The harness kit came with 2 leads. Instead of using one lead for each light, I used one lead for the front light bar and one lead for the two rear lights.
