The Definitive History of the Colors of Crayola

Part 11 – Enter the No. 48

This is a multi-part series of articles written to tell the tale of the history of color names for Crayola.

Table of Contents, Previous Segment, Next Segment

Post War

In as the war was ending, Crayola had already reinstated sourcing for two of their mainstay colors that been temporarily discontinued. Both Magenta and Flesh Tint were back on their catalog list of colors. The only problem with that is that they had already reconfigured their No. 24, assortments without those colors and so these colors returned only to the Bulk order list.

image

They also changed their wrapper types yet again after the war and went to an all upper-case version of the color names and for the first time in which every color used it.

With each subsequent year, Crayola slowly rebuilt their crayon color sources. They reintroduced their hinged tins when metal was available in production again. But by they still hadn’t reintroduced any of their larger assortment boxes into the marketplace. That all changed in

Introduction of the Crayola No. 48 Box

In Crayola launched their flagship assortment, the new No. 48 box.The box was an expansion of their existing No. 24 which by this time had a fold-back lid that behaved like a hinge and opened to four rows of six crayons on a stadium design so that it would showcase the tips of every color when looked at from straight on, not just from the top as in earlier designs. In the case of the No. 48, they expanded this to six rows of eight crayons on a similar stadium design using a similar style box with the fold-back lid.

But behind the scenes, this box was also the culmination of a redesign of their entire color line. Not since the acquisition of Munsell had they so changed their colors this wide scale.Inside the No. 48 were the colors:AZURE BLUE, BLACK, BLUE, BLUE-GREEN, BLUE-VIOLET, BRILLIANT ROSE, BROWN, BURNT SIENNA, CARMINE RED, CERULEAN BLUE, COBALT BLUE, DARK GREEN, DARK-RED, FLESH, GOLD OCHRE, GREEN, INDIAN RED, LAVENDER, LIGHT GREEN, LIGHT MAGENTA, LIGHT TURQUOISE GREEN, LIGHT YELLOW, MAGENTA, MAHOGANY, MED. RED VIOLET, MEDIUM BLUE, MEDIUM ORANGE, MEDIUM ROSE, MEDIUM VIOLET, MEDIUM YELLOW, MIDDLE BLUE-GREEN, NEUTRAL GRAY, OLIVE GREEN, ORANGE, PRUSSIAN BLUE, RAW UMBER, RED, RED-ORANGE, RED-VIOLET, ROSE-PINK, SALMON, SILVER, TURQUOISE BLUE, VIOLET, WHITE, YELLOW, YELLOW-GREEN, YELLOW-ORANGE.

No 48 color set

With this introduction there were six colors that seemed to be completely new:Azure Blue, Cerulean Blue, Dark Red, Lavender, Mahogany, Salmon

There were also some confusing changes:Brilliant Rose and Rose Pink? How were these two different? In addition to Magenta returning back to the lineup they also added a Light Magenta color?

With the new line up, several colors got minor name changes.Flesh Tint was now Flesh and Carmine was now Carmine Red.

Interestingly, Silver got added to the list but not Gold.Of the three original metallic colors Copper, Gold and Silver, only Gold and Silver were ever offered up as a Bulk crayon but both went away during the war and apparently only Silver returned after the war.Perhaps their sources for Gold couldn’t be reestablished in time for this.Perhaps they just chose not to.Perhaps we will never know the motivation for this just as we’ll never know the motivation to offer colors for over thirty years without ever putting them into a color assortment box.

Given the probability of Crayola renaming true colors and swapping colors, let’s look at the color swatches and do a comparison with what we had before to determine which are new colors and which are just reused colors.

Blue color family:

Blue Swatches

Of course the first thing that came up was that there was apparently a new chapter added to the complex tale of Blue.If you will recall, Blue swapped its original true color back in and Celestial Blue took over that true color when they brought Celestial Blue back in Now apparently the Blue color they were using since has swapped once again and was now Medium Blue.Blue, meanwhile, had adopted a brand new color that had a bit more purple in it.Granted, the Medium Blue and Blue swatches were colored a bit heavier from each other so I validated it several times and these were the same color.

What I did observe about blue colors was that they were a general mess to validate.Trying to figure out Cerulean Blue was too difficult for me to determine and so I just categorized it as a new color although it may very well have been inherited from something before.Interestingly, the blue color that the revived Celestial Blue took ultimately became Azure Blue in this color line up.

Another color pair nearly impossible to tell the difference between was the new Light Turquoise Blue and Turquoise Blue. They look like they have the same true color in my opinion but why would Crayola put the same color twice in a box and pair it off as a unique color just because they renamed it?My color swatches were just too close to call and so I did some more comparisons and found that Light Turquoise Blue looks to have really come from Middle Blue. Now, the swatches above all look generally the same but after some experimentation I’m convinced these two are the same color.

Oh, and one might argue that the Blue Green colors or the Turquoise Blue colors have changed true colors when comparing swatches but I double checked those and it was merely inconsistent degrees of coloring that produced that effect. They were still the same true colors.

Green color family:

Green Swatches

Crayola made some subtle changes in the green family. The Olive Green got a bit greener than before but I’m not going to classify that as a true color change.Light Green was back in the color line up but had a new true color; much bluer and less yellow looking than the original. My color swatch for Yellow Green was a bit misleading because of the heavy lay down of color in it.The true color did remain the same.Dark Green was now nearly indistinguishable from Green. It actually was slightly darker but they had really changed the true color from what it was back in the s to a much more green color.

Purple color family:

Purple Swatches

Lavender had some confusing research done on it in years past.My old friend John Astolfi even wrote that this color came from the Munsell original color Middle Purple in his color notes on his web site.John has proven to be pretty accurate in his research, however, when comparing these two color swatches there really wasn’t that much similarity and in fact Lavender doesn’t really compare to any other color in the purple family so it looked to be a new color they must have formulated when they went to reestablish their color line after the war.I can’t fault John though because I too had been through this color research several years earlier and some of my own findings from back then weren’t accurate either.

I took a vintage Brilliant Rose and Medium Rose crayon and colored with them at the same time side by side so that I had the same thickness of color on the paper and I just couldn’t see much of a difference. If you look at the two crayons though, there was a slightly lighter appearance to the Medium Rose crayon. When I performed the same experiment with Light Magenta and Brilliant Rose, they too looked identical on paper and yet completely different in appearance on the crayon.I’m going to give them their own unique true colors but I’m very skeptical that these aren’t just the same lay down color.

The same thing was true of Medium Violet and Violet. They pulled a fast one on everybody.I defy anyone to try and show those two as distinct different colors when you lay them down on paper.I can blend the two together on the computer or on paper and cannot tell where one ends and one begins.Nice try, Crayola!Still, they are so distinct in color appearance that they’ll begrudgingly get their own true colors.

Now Violet had changed a lot since we originally saw it.I was giving it some latitude earlier when the color started to get more vibrant from the original color.Everyone knows Crayola would naturally improve their core colors over time without necessarily switching the true color. In the case of Violet, it has lost all of the blackish or reddish hues that the color carried earlier. No, this was a new true color.

Red color family:

Red Swatches

Right off the bat, Dark Red and Salmon were new color names and true colors. No question on these.Red itself was much more vibrant than the Red of but it’s still the same red and my last few swatches were colored pretty heavily to make them appear much richer and vibrant.

Carmine Red got a name change.I guess they had to add the word “red” to it so people would know what color family it was.The color had lost some of the purplish hues since it was introduced but I didn’t split hairs, I left it as the same true color.

Medium Orange was the only other new one to show up and though my swatch wasn’t terrific, more experiments showed that the true color was actually taken from Middle Yellow Red.

Yellow Color Family:

Yellow Swatches

They also took this opportunity to clean up their basic yellows and align them better. This time around we had a multi-swapping of true colors going on.Yellow took its true color from the old Maximum Yellow (as Gamboge Yellow did back in ) and what was Yellow became Light Yellow. Finally, their yellows were making sense!

Not to go into all of the brown family but Mahoganywas the only new color. Here was the swatch:

Mahogany

So where did that leave us with color counts active?Did we go from 24 named and true colors to 48 named and true colors?Yes, but in reality, it was a bit more complex:

Azure Blue was a new named color but its true color came from the Celestial Blue that was in the No. 52 assortment and disappeared afterwards.

Blue was a new true color. This is the third time now Blue had adopted a new color.

Brilliant Rose was a new name and true color.

Carmine Red was a name change for the same Carmine true color.

Cerulean Blue was a new name and true color.

Dark Green had a new true color.

Dark Red was a new name and true color.

Flesh was a name change for the same Flesh Tint true color.

Lavender was a new name and true color.

Light Green was back and had a new true color.

Light Magenta was a new name and true color even though it laid down the same as Medium Rose.

Light Turquoise Blue was a new named color but its true color came from Middle Blue.

Light Yellow had a new true color but not new to the list because it was the old Yellow.

Mahogany was a new name and true color.

Medium Blue was a new name but got its true color from the Blue that was around in the late s (which was Blue’s second true color at the time).

Medium Orange was a new name but got its true color from Middle Yellow Red.

Medium Red Violet was a new name and true color.

Medium Rose was a new name and true color even though it laid down the same as Light Magenta.

Medium Violet was a new name true color even though it laid down the same as Violet.

Salmon was a new name and true color.

Violet had a new true color though it suspiciously laid down the same as Medium Violet though the two don’t look the same.

Yellow had a new true color but it actually isn’t new to the list because it was the old Maximum Yellow true color.

Some colors came back from their “temporary shortage” though they didn’t have any name or true color changes:Cobalt Blue, Magenta, Middle Blue Green, Raw Umber, Silver (which was finally back in an assortment),

A multitude of colors just didn’t make it back from the temporary shortage and color reworking. The following colors were actually discontinued, not just listed as “temporary shortage” as a result: Burnt Umber, Gold, Venetian Red, Maximum Blue, Maximum Blue Green, Maximum Green, Maximum Green Yellow, Maximum Purple, Maximum Purple Blue, Maximum Red, Maximum Red Purple, Maximum Yellow, Maximum Yellow Red,Middle Blue, Middle Blue Green, Middle Green, Middle Green Yellow, Middle Purple, Middle Purple Blue, Middle Red, Middle Red Purple, Middle Yellow, Middle Yellow Red, Sepia

So, after all of that, we went from 24 to 48 active named and true colors

And we add another entry to Crayola’s largest assortment list:

– , 30 colors (compliments of the No. 30)

– , 24 colors (compliments of the Rubens-Crayola No. 24)

– , 32 colors (compliments of the No. )

– , 52 colors (compliments of the No. 52)

– , 24 colors (compliments of the No. 24,)

– , 48 colors (compliments of the No. 48)

The Crayola My Color Is series includes the colors; blue, pink, purple, green, orange, red, black and yellow. It was sold in at Target stores. The boxes included: Window Crayons, Pip-Squeak Skinnies Markers, Short Colored Pencils, Dry-Erase Crayon, Pip-Squeak Marker, Mini Twistables Crayon, and a Color Sticks Colored Pencil.

My husband bought these boxes for me for my birthday. They were expensive at each, but I absolutely love them.  The back features quotes from kids on all the colors.  My kids really want a box.  I let my son use the window crayons, and will probably pick them up a box when they go on clearance.

An interesting note is that Crayola has trademarked the "My Color Is" name.

At the Bystretsovs' dacha, in the company of Alexander Sergeevich, they found the niece of the former owner of his dacha, young Yulenka Severgin, sitting languidly in a rocking chair. The disorder in her unbuttoned and slightly crumpled clothes testified that, taking advantage of his privacy, Alexander took advantage of the opportunity and seduced the girl.
