2012 Mitsubishi Lancer GT First Test

Can a Name Change and Face-lift Save This Compact?

Mitsubishi Lancer Full Overview

When you think of the words "fun" and "Lancer," Mitsubishi's rally-bred Lancer Evolution is unquestionably the first vehicle that comes to mind. After that, the turbocharged Ralliart model is next in line. But is there any fun to be had elsewhere in the Lancer lineup? We sampled a 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer GT to find out if any of that sporty DNA has trickled down to the Japanese automaker's mid-level Lancer offering.

For 2012, the GTS trim level was renamed GT and it received a new Ralliart-inspired front fascia. The model still packs the same 2.4-liter I-4 producing 168 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque, and boasts standard 18-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity, automatic headlights, and Mitsubishi's Fast Key entry system. The Lancer GT starts at $21,640 including destination, but our tester came with the $3550 Touring package, bringing the as-tested price to $25,190. That package includes leather seating; a 710-watt, nine-speaker Rockford-Fosgate audio system; Sirius satellite radio; HID headlights, a power sunroof; and a rearview mirror-integrated backup camera display.

Transmission choices for the Lancer GT include a five-speed manual and CVT that achieve EPA fuel economy ratings of 22/31 and 23/30 city/highway mpg respectively. Our tester came equipped with the CVT, which did little to help the GT's fun-to-drive quotient. Though the transmission's manual mode allows drivers to rev up to (and even hold) near the 6500-rpm redline, the simulated shifts seem to do little more than change the engine's pitch and volume. Still, having the steering wheel-mounted metal paddle shifters gives you some feeling of control, even if they don't contribute to a sportier driving experience.

In testing, the Lancer GT's 2.4-liter and CVT combo managed 0-60 mph in 8.3 seconds and completed the quarter mile in 16.4 seconds at 86.3 mph. Not blazingly fast, but still quick enough to beat the 173-hp Kia Forte SX hatchback equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, which posted an 8.7-second 0-60 result and 16.7-second quarter mile at 83.7 mph. But the previous Mazda3 Grand Touring's 167-hp, 2.5-liter I-4, which carries over into the current Mazda3 s, out-accelerated the Lancer GT in our last test, where a six-speed manual model hit 0-60 in 7.6 seconds and completed the quarter mile in 15.8 seconds at 87.8 mph.

Handling felt better than average for the class, thanks to the GT's stiffer sport-tuned suspension. The front-drive sedan stayed planted when attacking long, sweeping freeway on-ramps, though body roll was noticeable in sharper turns, as was the car's natural tendency to understeer. In our handling tests, the Lancer GT achieved an average 0.79 g in lateral acceleration, with a figure-eight time of 28.1 seconds at an average 0.60 g. That's on par with its two closest competitors, nearly matching the Kia Forte SX's result of 28.0 seconds at 0.60 g, and the Mazda3's time of 27.6 seconds at 0.61 g. Braking was also close, with the Lancer stopping from 60 mph in 125 feet, versus the Mazda3 at 123 feet and the Kia Forte at 122 feet.

Those numbers don't tell the whole story. Inside, the Lancer feels as old as it is, with its dated center stack layout, cheap-feeling materials, and boringly flat door panels. The doors themselves feel unusually light, and don't offer any sense of solidity when you open or close them. The Lancer's build quality argument isn't helped when you crank up the Rockford Fosgate audio system and the trunk-mounted 10-inch subwoofer produces rattles and other unwanted noises that reverberate through various interior pieces. Hitting bumps and potholes produces similar noises, and proves especially jarring, likely due to the stiffer dampers. Luckily, the exterior is more exciting to look at than the inside, with the Lancer GT inheriting some of the aggressive front end styling of its sportier siblings. The look has aged more gracefully than the Lancer's cabin design, and remains one of the model's best attributes.

Competition in the compact sedan class is tougher than ever, and the Lancer just doesn't have much to offer over its newer C-segment rivals. The GT model brings some additional content and sportiness to the table, but still can't keep pace with competitors because of its dated interior and questionable fit and finish. If Mitsubishi hopes to escape its rut of mediocrity, the next-gen Lancer needs to improve in both of those areas while still maintaining its standout exterior styling. Until then, sport compact shoppers' money is better spent elsewhere.

DRIVE4FIVE - 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer GT Point of View Review

Before meeting my father, I was in love with another person. It happened in college, a lot of different things happened, and we couldn't live together. We continued to be friends, but three years ago we realized that we still love each other. Old feelings flashed with renewed vigor.

I caught myself thinking and I felt disgusted. I considered myself progressive and modern, did not believe in all this nonsense, in gender inequality and so on. But still.

In five minutes I will join you. we kiss passionately, there is a storm of emotions between us, we we wish to get to know each other as closely as possible. I inform you that I want to start our game, about which we talked so much during our correspondence. I see eyelashes. Flying up to my eyes, a frightened look.
