Electrical System Problems of Mercury Mountaineer - part 2

36 Electrical System problem of the 2000 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 09/09/2014

I was driving to an intersection with my family while going 45 mph. I noticed black coming through the vents. I pulled off to a gas station parking lot. I proceeded to use fire extinguishers under the hood, the fire department had to come put it out. They did a look through and determined the fire started at the fuse box. I went home and researched that this is a recurring problem with this type of vehicle. I'm now out the 6500 I used to purchase it. I cant fix it or trade it in now.

40 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/13/2014

I purchased this used vehicle which is in excellent shape and I love everything about it except the seat issue. After having the car for about a week the power seat started moving on its own. The interior lights will come on and the actual navigation/radio system and driving lights dim. I have looked online and this seems to be a constant problem and is basically the ignition area that needs to be replaced. I have almost been in a few accidents because of this and have 2 small children. My mother had to drive my car one day and she pulled over in complete fear because of almost wrecking. There has to be some type of recall to fix this problem. Every bump you hit this happens now. Multiple times in a 10 min drive. It is seriously dangerous. Please respond ASAP! thank you! kasey.

41 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 10/15/2013

Apparently there have been a lot of issues with the thermostat housing leaking fluid into the electrical system causing it to short out. I was driving, went to take off in rush hour traffic and they vehicle wouldn't go because the leak and ruined a part of the electrical system and the gears would shift. It was almost like the transmission had gone out. I have read several accounts where this has happened to tons of <09 Mountaineers and explorers. TSB 09-22-15 came out about this issue. I was driving with my infant daughter and we could have been injured very badly. Something needs to be done about this. It has been identified and apparenlty affects people's cars and their ability to accelerate. Very dangerous.

42 Electrical System problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 08/07/2013

I've been review this site and see where several people are experiencing the same issues that I am having with my 2003 Mountaineer. The rear gate is cracking around the emblem. I've have reported this to Ford and they tell me I can pay to fix it and if there is recall they will reimburse me. In addition I am also experiencing the door ajar light coming on when all are shut and secure. I have contact Ford and several local dealerships. The dealership all tell me their hands are tied until Ford makes a decision and that I am not alone. Ford refuses to do anything. It's almost like they don't care. With all these complaints why isn't this agency doing something?.

43 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 07/01/2013

The issue started out while we were driving; the seat would move to the easy exit feature and the dome lights would come on as though the key was removed from the ignition. It's now more frequent and happens when you put the key in the ignition. Turning the key slightly will put in back into the driving position. This is a serious driving hazard as you're moved very far away from the steering wheel as well as the brake and gas pedals. Sadly, it will take a deadly accident occurring for this to be considered a recall.

44 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/15/2013

Shortly after purchasing my Mountaineer the electric running board on the driver side began to make a grinding sound. Bought from a dealer in wa state and moved to WI state where the driver side stopped and the passenger side stopped extending/retracting. Moved to NJ and we had purchased the vehicle extended warranty. Began to sound like a knocking sound with little power and had towed to dealer. There they found all 8 spark plugs fouled, driver side had 3 exhaust manifold bolts loose. Passenger side had same 3 loose, but also had 2 broken off in exhaust manifold plus the manifold itself had a hairline crack. In the end, I paid almost $2,000 to have driver and passenger running board and motors replaced. The rear windshield wiper motor had gone bad and was replaced, the spark plugs and all manifold bolts (along with broken) were all removed and replaced.

45 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 04/09/2013

Turn key on an seat goes back an fourth ,then stops ,while driving it goes back an forth again some times 3-4times it has gotten much worse recently ,definitely not safe to drive like that, this happened when starting up the car an driving, which makes the seat go all the way back an I'm short so when it goes back I barely reach the pedals, this happened all the time for no reason on side streets on highway.

46 Electrical System problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/19/2013

Engine stalls when activating cruise control which results in hazardous driving situation due to loss of power steering and brakes. Have to pull over to side of road, put the vehicle in park and restart. Starts every time. Has repeated 3 times. This is a serious flaw in the Ford electrical computer design to result a failure mode that stalls the vehicle engine while under speed.

47 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/15/2013

While driving the vehicle, the seat suddenly went all the way back and the interior lights came on. After a moment, the seat went back to normal position and the lights went back out. This has happened several times since then, we finally figured out it was the ignition, with the car acting like the key just got put in the ignition or just pulled out, and the seat moving all the way back for easier ingress/egress and the courtesy lights coming on. Since I am only 5 foot 2 inches, when the seat moves back I can no longer reach the petals, a very dangerous situation while driving. I hope this gets fixed before somebody gets hurt, as I have a couple friends with Mountaineers, one is the same year, who have the same problem.

48 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 11/26/2012

While driving on highway drivers seat went forward independently without warning and seat went in the last memory position as far forward as possible position jamming drivers foot on gas pedal for an unspecified amount of time, and dome light came on. Driver could not get foot off gas pedal and could only get the seat to go back by manually using the seat buttons. Drivers seat was so far forward it was very difficult for driver to get hand between door and seat to get to button and driver was so frantic and scared trying to maintain vehicle control while attempting to get hand between seat and door to reach and find correct button to move seat back when there are 3 different seat buttons. Driver has disabled person that sets behind drivers seat so drivers seat upon disabled person entering vehicle is always put in the fartherest position forward to enable disabled person space to get in vehicle. Upon finally getting seat back driver has no recollection of any events occurring afterward because driver went into shock. Took vehicle to dealership to find problem shop manager got in attempting to duplicate problem instead the seat wouldn't even move as it's automatically programmed to do, then seat rocked back and forth, then went all the way forward. Dealership made two new ignition keys to replace the worn key, replaced computer memory cylinder in steering wheel where it was found if worn ignition key lost contact because of key being worn, with cylinder, seat had a mind of it's own. This resulted in a speeding ticket.

49 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 11/05/2012

Tl-the contact owns a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer. While driving approximately 40 mph, the front driver's side seat moved backward and forward independently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician was able to duplicate the failure and recommended replacing the ignition. The technician advised that if the failure continued, then the seating harness would have to be replaced. The contact had the technician disconnect the seat. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 52,000. Kmj.

50 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 08/03/2012

Engine will not turn over. All electronics work. Keep turning ignition key on and off sometimes it will start in a few minutes other times it has to sit for a half hour or more. Dome light will come on for no reason. After reading others having same issues, I turned on easy access and slightly turned ignition key and sure enough the seat went back and dome light came on. This vehicle has been to a Ford dealer numerous times, once towed, and they can't seem to duplicate the problem. Thanks to this website I now have more information and hopefully will be able to get this on going issue fixed. The easy access is always turned off. The no crank no start is the big problem because I can't go anywhere for just a half hour and be confident it will start.

51 Electrical System problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/29/2012

The word door ajar on my dash board keeps tell me that a door is open when all the doors are closed and I think thats why my inside lights and the lights on my outside mirras takes 15-20 min's to go off after I have alarmed the vehicle and when I get in to drive the lights should go off admedily but they dont.

52 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/25/2012

Truck cooling system died which caused the truck to catch fire while driving down the highway, smoke poring out, state troopers had to assist us. My daughter was scared to death and now refuses to get back in the truck even though we got a new engine. To make matters worse we spent 3000 on and engine. . . 500 on cooling system and had the transmission reprogrammed. The truck is still have major problems and now for says it needs the transmission rebuilt or replaced. All of this is out of pocket. We cant even trade it in bc they will only give us 1/2 of what we paid for it 2 yrs ago. Nightmare and makes me sick that Ford doesn't care.

53 Electrical System problem of the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/16/2012

At 2 am we smelled smoke and saw it coming from garage, when I opened garage door flames were coming out of front of car. My mothers car burnt and it is a total loss. We had to call fire dept. My garage was wrecked. My house has smoke damage.

54 Electrical System problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/04/2012

Ford has a TSB on their website for the problems I am having with my vehicle. I contacted tyem and I was told that I have to pay for the repairs. What I do not understand is if there are sooo many complaint from consumers on this vehicle for the same issues is that not the responsibility of the manufacture being it considered a defective product? I have to children and this is of extreme concern to me that these issues on my car can cause an accident. -back trunk door is cracked down the latch. -the car doesn't shift correctly and tires seem loose -the overdrive light is blinking all the time and the transmission is signaling. . I have found so many websites with complaints about the same issues on 2003-2004 Mercury Mountaineers.

55 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

Our 2008 Mountaineer is equipped with power seats with settings memory. Normally, when you turn the engine off and open any of the doors, the driver's seat automatically glides in reverse to the fullest extent to allow for more room to exit the car. When the seat glides backwards, the step bar on the outside of the car automatically drops down and outward. For an unknown reason, the driver's seat (randomly) automatically glides backwards to fullest extent and the step bar automatically drops down as though the engine has been turned off and one of the doors has been opened. It happens just about everyday at least once. It happened 6 times in a 4 minute time period the other day. Each time it immediately went back to its original position. The first time it happened, my wife was driving on the freeway at 65 mph. The first time it happened to me was when I was starting to make a right turn. I ended up 2' over in the oncoming traffic lane. Luckily, no cars were near. This problem could have dire consequences.

56 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/18/2012

While driving, dome light illuminated and driver's seat moved to farthest position back as if exiting the vehicle. This problem is happening more frequently while driving. This problem also happens when turning on headlights or moving gear selector from park to drive or reverse. It is intermittent, but happens daily. A person shorter than I, will loose contact with break and accelerator pedals. Tapping on keys may return seat to a more forward position. As an engineer, I see this as a manufacturer's safety issue that should be resolved by the manufacturer and not the customer.

57 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 11/21/2011

There is a recurring problem that the seat will automatically go into the "easy exit" position. This is not a problem for me as I drive with the seat as far back as possible, but this is a huge safety concern for my wife. Why hasn't this been recalled yet? this seems to be a common problem in this make and model. God forbid the electrical problem worsens and causes a fire.

58 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 07/20/2011

(day and mileage are approximate values). 2006 Mercury Mountaineer awd premier edition. In excess rainfall events, water leaks thru sunroof and down thru roof center lighting console. I've taken it to numerous places to have it evaluated. Upon receiving it from a used car dealer (respectable reputation) the sunroof leaked a day or two later. Took back to purchasing dealership and they removed entire sunroof assembly, cleaned and replaced all seals. The next rainstorm occurred and I was told to park downhill because there are very thin tubes and they clog easily, causing the water to pool up and leak thru, the center lighting console. I've even asked Ford and was told bring it to my local dealership for repair. Dealership says repair will be my responsibility, and also says it may not 100% repair since they would do same services the previous establishments performed (remove, clean tracks and tubes, reseal).

59 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/15/2011

Bought used in wa state and live in NJ now. After purchasse it rained one night and next morning entire center console, overhead lights were all wet inside. Upon further investigation determined leak was sunroof. Notified dealer and they had a glass specialist remove the entire assembly and thoroughly clean. Replaced seal with new one and claimed no more leakage. A few days later it rained again (wa well known for always raining) and again the leak was present. The dealer's response was now 'park your vehicle with the front end downhill. There are tiny slots that direct the water down the corner pillars and apparently clog easily. So parking with front end downhill will relieve the water before it can pool up to leak.

60 Electrical System problem of the 2000 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/28/2011

The contact owns a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer. While driving approximately 35 mph attempting to make a left turn, the contact noticed smoke emitting from the hazard warning switch housing. The failure occurred twice. The failure was not diagnosed nor was the vehicle repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

61 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 04/04/2011

The car would have a warning display that a door was ajar and we would check all the doors and re-close them all and the warning would still appear. Then we would check the lift gate window on the back and re-close it and the display would go away, but the lift gate was closed the whole time before. It constantly does this and now the lift gate has a crack in it.

62 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/08/2011

While driving, the driver's side dome light came on and the seat moved all the way back. Now, when you start the car, the seat will move all the way back and has to be manually, with power button, put into a comfortable position for driving. The seat continues to move back by itself at random times. Many times the problem occurs when driving, even at 30 mph or less, over a bump in the road.

63 Electrical System problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 11/29/2010

Just purchased a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer today. Driving home, using cruise/speed control at around 30mph and driving on a slight decline, the vehicle shut down. All indicator lights went on, and I had to coast to the side of the road. I put vehicle in park and restarted it without problem. There were no indicator lights (check-engine, etc. ) lit up. Immediately went to local Ford dealership and they had no clue, especially since the computer did not have any codes indicating a problem. . I'm canceling the check and returning the vehicle tomorrow.

64 Electrical System problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/17/2010

65 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 04/13/2010

The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact stated that the front driver's seat moved back independently and the dome light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where unknown repairs were performed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000 and the current mileage was 38,000.

66 Electrical System problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Brake light safety switch failed twice.

67 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/20/2010

The driver seat motor messed up causing the to be stationary. The seat wont move forward and backward. The air conditioning on the driver side doesn't blow cold , the dash and radio lights brighten and dim sporadically and the third row seats don't work, the gear stripped out. Also, the bushings on the feont and rear have had to be replaced.

68 Electrical System problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/03/2010

I have 2003 Mercury Mountaineer and I have had it since February 2007. I have had numerous problems with it and the last problems was the breaking point. I have three more years to pay for this vehicle and I want something to be done about the problems with this vehcile. Ford should be held responsible for this vehicle and fixing the problems associated with it. I purchased this vehicle from community Ford in new albany, ms in February 2007 with 45,000 miles on it. I couldn't get an extended warranty or any warranty with the vehicle I was told. After a year, I had to replace the front end and it was $500. 00 at george's tire services. I took it in due to this noise coming from the front and I was advised that if I didn't have the work did it would lock up on me while I am driving and cause and accident. I noticed that my structure body:hatchback/tailgate has cracked completely. My seat belt on the driver side in the back don't work. My engine cooling system aircompressor has went out and I have electrical problems where my oil gauge is constantly saying it's low. I have my oil change every 3000 miles. I am hearing this noise in the rear of the vehicle and I don't know what it is and can't afford to get going to Ford to see what it is. I have been smelling this burning coming from the under the hood and I don't know what it is either. My lastest problem is my transmission is going out and I have had this vehicle for two years and I have three more years of payment on this vehicle. My transmission cost me around $3500 and I don't have any warranty on it. This is a lemon I have purchased and I think something should be done about it.

69 Electrical System problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/26/2009

2003 Mercury Mountaineer 4. 6l-when the vehicle is not under acceleration [stop sign/signal, exiting an expressway to a surface street, coasting] the engine will not hold idle, then stall. The steering & brakes are compromised when the engine stalls. To restart the engine, the headlights go dark for a moment. . . This is a very serious matter. Decelerating from an expressway to a surface street, on a curved exit ramp , at night makes for an out of control situation where the driver can not see because of engine failure! I've replaced the throttle position censor [tps] with no improvement. The dealer offers replacement of parts $1500, and no guarantee of solving the problem. The vehicle is useless to me fore it is a hazard to be on the road. . . For me and anyone else driving near me.

70 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/10/2009

The transmission keeps slipping causing the car to stall and stutter in traffic had to have it rebuilt in 2008 costing $3600. 00, the differentials causing problems on front and rear with the car wheels spinning and sticking at times, the tires (all four) balling out from the inside out having to replace them every three to four months, the power locks, radio, interior lights all work when they want to like its a shortage.

5 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 10/16/2018

While driving the vehicle the interior light turns on and the seat moves back into the park position. This is a safety issue as it is difficult to reach the pedal/brake and it happens without notice. There is no rhyme or reason to this problem. I have seen multiple posts regarding this issue and don't see how it cannot be a recall for safety reasons.

6 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/02/2018

While driving my seat will randomly move back and forth as if I took the keys out. Thought something was wrong with my transmission but after having the garage put transmission fluid in it still feels like the transmission is messed up even though the garage says the transmission is fine.

7 Electrical System problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 10/05/2017

1. Paint coming off of roof and driver's door. 2. Rear passenger side and driver side power windows not working. 3. Cracks in plastic area of rear lift gate around wiper arm. 4. Almost lost control and potential accident on interstate when right rear wheel came loose.

Upon driving on the freeway the inside dome lights came on and my seat started adjusting itself back and forth while driving.

9 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 08/03/2017

I was driving home on a busy city street when I stop at a stop light to turn right. When I went to accelerate my Mercury Mountaineer when in to limp mode. As I inspected the SUV for problems I noticed the my engine/transmission wire harness was brittle and exposing bare wire and that the wires were touching each others cause them to short off the vehicle computer system and frying electrical components. It also caused the transmission to malfunction and shift wrong which in turn causing the torque converter to fail and destroy the transmission.

10 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/27/2017

My power will stay on for long periods of time also I'm having an acceleration problem when I drive I have to wait for it to go to about 25 mi till 26 for it to pick up any speed it takes a very long time for it to pick up any speed in the 1st place.

11 Electrical System problem of the 1997 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/27/2017

I was at a gas station making a purchase with my disabled mother. We left the store, and got into my truck. I started my truck and proceed to dive towards the exit of the gas station when I smelled something like burning rubber. I said to my mother that something smelled funny and then looked and saw a thin steam of smoke coming up from in between my legs. I parked the truck and jumpers out leaving my om in the car. I then saw a fire inside of the metal track in which my seat moves mechanically underneath my seat, where the wires are. I ran into the gas station panicked and asked the attendant for a fire extinguisher, to which he replied " no, I don't know I don't have one" and did nothing. So I ran back outside to my truck where my mother was having trouble exiting my truck as she has anxiety and health issues. She finally got out and a tow truck that was driving by, saw the smoke getting heavier and flowing out of my truck, he stopped and out the fire out with an extinguisher. The flames were coming through my seat and I was at a gas station. I was terrified. I have ptsd and this hasn't helped my sleep at all. Also, we were at a gas station and as you know, fire is very dangerous at a gas station. We could've been seriously hurt or worse.

12 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/05/2017

While driving driver seat goes backward and interior lights goes on with out using or pushing no instruments.

13 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 03/20/2017

While driving the vehicle, the seat suddenly went all the way back and the interior lights came on. This has happened several times since then, we finally figured out it was the ignition, with the car acting like the key just got put in the ignition or just pulled out, and the seat moving all the way back for easier ingress/egress and the courtesy lights coming on. Since I am only 5 foot 4 inches, when the seat moves back I can no longer reach the petals, a very dangerous situation while driving.

14 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 11/21/2016

When going 25-30 mph vehicle will not shift. It actually kicked the vehicle back. Od light started to flash then service engine soon light came on. Been doing this since. Went to go get Mountaineer read and of coarse. . The transmission. . Something needs to be done otherwise this might eventually lead to a lawsuit after reading all of the complaints on the exact same thing.

The failure mileage was 87,000.

16 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 08/01/2016

While driving the driver seat automatically goes back and the interior light comes on. . . This is gonna cause an accident cuz when the seat goes back the memory key for the seat position doesnt work until u turn the ignition off and back on again, once the seat goes back I cant reach the break or peddle. This is dangerous situation and isee im not the only one having this issue? it happens several times a day. . Soemtime when u first start it but mostly while driving down the road.

17 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 07/05/2016

Easy entry/exit feature. This feature will enable while driving my vehicle. This makes for a dangerous situation because I am not able to reach my gas and brake pedal. There is no specific pattern.

18 Electrical System problem of the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/27/2016

The contact owns a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer. When the vehicle was started, the contact heard a knocking noise from the middle of the dashboard and cold air was blowing from the vents. The dealer diagnosed that the temperature blender actuator failed and needed replacement. This was the third time the vehicle was repaired for the same failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 98,581.

See all problems of the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer 🔎.

19 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/11/2016

While driving, the drivers power seat will move to the "open door position" causing my feet to be too far from the pedals. This is extremely dangerous. I have seen many reports regarding this issue.

20 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 04/12/2016

The contact owns a 2008 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact stated that the key failed to start the vehicle numerous times. In addition, the driver's seat moved out of position while the vehicle was in motion. The vehicle was taken to the dealer more than once, but the failure was unable to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.

21 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 03/17/2016

When driving the vehicle at any speed the seat moves all the way back and the interior lights come on. This also happens when you brake or go over a bump. This is very dangerous to someone of my size because when the seat goes all the way back I can no longer touch the pedals. This is happening very often and I have googled it and I can see that a lot of other people who own this year make and model are having the same problems with their vehicle. I have taken it to several mechanics and Ford dealers and nobody seems to be able to figure out what is wrong with it.

22 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 03/15/2016

After approximately 90,000 miles the dome lights turned on and automatic seats move back while driving. This issue persists and often occurs several times. There are several complaints of this issue found online. It is not due to a heavy key chain as I only have the fob and key attacked. This is a safety issue as the seats pull the driver away from the pedals and steering wheel. Investigate! recall!.

24 Electrical System problem of the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 03/02/2016

My husband was driving our 2005 Mercury Mountaineer and he was going less than 20 miles per hour on a main street and got in a accident the woman stopped short and he rear ended her. The car totalled up buckled up air bags never inflated they came out completely deflated. Issue with this car also is the electric driver window dies out mechanic could not figure out bought new motors still wouldnt open electric switches they thought it was fully electronic they where going to re wire very expensibe but car was totalled. Car horrible on gas also. Have pictures of delated air bags both driver and passanger.

25 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 02/26/2016

Defective ignition. When driving, if you bump the key (or attached keychain), all interior lights will come on, and the drivers seat will retract all the way back into the "easy entry/exit" position, making it impossible for a shorter person to reach the brake or gas pedal. Sometimes during this event, the car will stall. This is very dangerous, and the internet is full of people having this identical issue. Why hasn't this been recalled yet?!? people are paying for a new ignition tumbler, but before long it starts happening to the replacement tumbler as well. . Read more...

26 Electrical System problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/05/2016

While my 17 year old daughter was driving with the cruise control on in a 30 -40 mph zone, several lights came on, the power steering went out, and the vehicle stalled. She was on a small 2 lane road, and there were no warnings prior to the occurrence. She was very scared, she turned on the hazard lights and called me immediately. The vehicle then restarted and she drove home. Today (Jan. 5, 2016) the problem occurred again, fortunately in a slow speed zone again. She was able to restart the vehicle and continue driving. This problem is potentially very dangerous and needs to be addressed by the manufacturer, or they need to offer a buy back at full value for placing people at risk.

27 Electrical System problem of the 2000 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 07/27/2015

The contact owns a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer. While parked, the vehicle erupted into flames without warning. The fire was extinguished by the fire department. A police report was not filed and there were no injuries reported. The vehicle remained at the contact's residence where it was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was destroyed. The vehicle parked in front of the contact's vehicle was also destroyed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 05v017000 (vehicle speed control). The failure mileage was approximately 155,000.

28 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/01/2015

While driving to work one morning all I here was ding ding ding od/off started flashing . Aamco saying that I need a rebuilt tranny that's bs with all what I have been reading it's just a rip off I don't have $3500 to get this fix. Now seeing not once not twice so many complaints I read that people paid for 2 or more tranny for the vehicle's and nothing is been done about it. And the Ford deals knows about it. . . . . Do a human being has to lose their life before Ford dealer's can own up to there responsibility? if they was in our shoes they would want the same thing vice verse they say u reap what you sow. Please please please help up just fix our transmission that's all. . Another thing abs light stays on check engine light stays on the seat belt light stays on all my windows doesn't let down now wtf?.

29 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/22/2015

Exact same as NHTSA id # 10654146. The "easy exit" feature activated at 65 mph in freeway traffic. I am 6' tall and was able to slide seat forward, but my wife is 5' tall and may have had issues reaching the pedals. . . This has since happened on 3 other occasions ( 2 at freeway speed, and once pulling into our driveway). I will contact dealer, but wanted search recalls first.

30 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/15/2015

Seat moved back for "easy exit" all vehicle components shut off and vehicle brakes locked up in the road then cut back on by itself and transmission jerked into gear like someone rear ended us! very scary and unsafe with my 10 month old in the vehicle!.

31 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/01/2015

The same as other complaints except it is an ongoing problem. Easy exit feature activates on its own, dome light comes on at slow or moderate speed, sudden stops and turning. Sometimes it corrects itself and sometimes you have to manually adjust the seat. Very annoying and unsafe.

32 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 12/10/2014

The contact owns a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact stated that the all the doors failed to open when using the key fob and the power door lock switches. The contact stated that only the front driver side door could be opened manually. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, who diagnosed that the Smart junction box failed. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 88,783.

33 Electrical System problem of the 2000 Mercury Mountaineer

Tl-the contact owns a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 mph, fuel fumes emitted into the vehicle and the engine began to smoke before it caught on fire. The check engine light illuminated. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire. The vehicle was towed to contact residence. The vehicle was declared destroyed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 240,000. Pam.

34 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 10/10/2014

While driving between 50 - 65 miles per hour the electric driver seat will move back into the open door park position and the inside lights will come on. Has happened multiple times since October 2014. There is no set pattern, it is completely random.

35 Electrical System problem of the 2000 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 09/09/2014

I was driving don the road to an intersection going 45 mph and noticed black smoke coming from under the hood. I proceeded to pull over and got my family out the car before the electrical was completely fried. I tried to put the fire out with two extinguishers and help from fellow bystanders. The blaze under the hood had to be put out by the fire department. I received a police and fire report. The area that the fire had originated from was the fuse box. I know this was a factory problem because I didn't do any work in those areas. I would like compensation for my vehicle because I'm now out 6500 dollars and I searched online and read about over a 100 explorer and Mountaineer fires under the hood. I never received any recalls for my vehicle and I owned it over 10 years.
