Last week, actor Max Thieriot, who currently stars on CBS's military drama series SEAL Team, shared a truly inspiringbefore and after photo of his physical transformation over his time on the show (which was just renewed for its fifth season). But as he tells Men's Health, the transformation has actually been a decade in the making. That's when he saw our cover with actor Ryan Philippe, which showed off the actor's transformation for his soon-to-be released film MacGruber.

"Honestly, that's how it all started for me. Ten years ago that magazine came out, and I said if this guy can do this, so can I," says Thieriot.

As a kid, Thieriot was always active, spending his time outdoors hunting and fishing. He played lots of sports, and started wrestling in third grade, which he continued through high school. He wasn't into lifting, and focused more on functional exercise.

"When that article came out in , I weighed pounds," says Thieriot, who is 5'11''.

He did start working out then, but admits he didn't know what he was doing. He started lifting and followed a workout Brad Pitt did for one of his roles. Thieriot notes that he was also doing lots of cardio, but quickly realized he "was a naturally thin dude with high metabolism, so I didn't need to do that much cardio." Soon after cutting back, he says he put on 20 pounds.

From there, he started getting advice from trainers and mentors in Los Angeles, including Eric the Trainer and Danny Hester. Once he landed his role on SEAL Team, it was a chance to use his job as an additional motivator to start training seriously.

"It was the perfect opportunity for me to have the excuse to really focus on my training and my diet, working out and putting on size," he says. "I focused all my energy on it."

At the time, he was told he wouldn't be provided a trainer by the show's brass—so it really was on him to get in the shape he needed to be in.

"I had to put in the work and put in the time," Thieriot says.

How Max Thieriot Trains for SEAL Team

Nowadays, Thieriot prefers to train at his home gym in Sonoma County, California. But when he's in Los Angeles, he will hit one of the many gyms he has a membership to, including Crunch and Gold's Gym, where he works with Eric the Trainer or Hester. He also trains with his co-star AJ Buckley.

"The past year, I focused on increasing my shoulder and back width," says Thieriot. "The SEAL build is big shoulders, arms, and traps. For my character (Clay Spenser), I wanted to show the evolution of going from regular SEAL Team to SEAL Team 6."

He follows two different routines that use superset splits focused on heavy weight and lower reps, followed by lower weight and higher reps.

"I do a lot of barbell work to try to build size. I love the incline bench and almost always work with barbells," says Thieriot. His workouts are filled with moves like pullups, bent-over barbell rows, deadlifts, squats, hamstring curls and leg extension, close-grip bench press, wide grip barbell curls, military barbell press, delt dumbbell flys, and a lot of shrugs.

"I will stick to one version for a few months, then switch and do the other," says Thieriot.

How Max Thieriot Eats to Stay Ripped

Thieriot is now maintaining a weight between to pounds, and aims to sit around 10 percent body fat. That also meant working on his diet.

"I've done a lot of meal prep, but through trial and error I found what works for my body," says Thieriot. "I like eating food, and I'm a big foodie. I just try to eat good, healthy food—not junk. I wake up and slam a scoop of whey when I wake up to jumpstart my metabolism."

He's fastidious with his diet. For breakfast, that usually means one cup of oats, one cup blueberries, four whole eggs, two pieces of Ezekiel toast with Kerry Gold butter. Or yam pancakes. "Right now I make these yam pancakes with my own recipe for 1/2 yam, 1/4 oats, two whole eggs, a bunch of egg white, some protein and I blend it and make pancakes." For a morning snack, he eats whole eggs with Ezekiel bread.

"I work out after my breakfast meals, and have pre-workout. As soon as I lift, I have a banana and scoop of whey protein," he says. "Then I start cooking lunch. It usually consists of frozen white rice from Trader Joe's and chicken thighs with teriyaki and some avocado. It tastes good and it's easy."

After lunch, Thieriot snacks on protein shakes, almond butter, and apples. Dinner isn't complicated. "Something similar to lunch, maybe steak," he says. "I'm not really crazy regimented about eating certain volumes. I listen to my body. If I want sushi, I have sushi. I just don't eat a lot of garbage in general." The actor says he stays away from dairy and processed sugars like ice cream, candy, and soda, instead getting carbs from oats, yams and white rice. Protein is eggs, chicken, steak, wild game, or salmon.

Thieriot's physical journey has been inspired by the SEALs he and his castmates portray.

"Once you start obsessing over something and you put your mind to something, your mind can do amazing things," he says. "So many of these guys get through BUD/S [the intensive training SEALs undergo] because of will power and strength of mind. They force their bodies beyond limits. If another human can do that, I can force myself to stick to a routine. You just have to want it bad enough. It's easy to make excuses for anything."

You can catch SEAL Team on CBS and Paramount +.

A great actor immerses themself into their character while on- and off-screen, and Max Thieriot certainly took his training seriously when taking on the role of a Navy Seal on CBS’s military drama series SEAL Team. Recently, the year-old actor went on Instagram to share his inspiring physical transformation, which took the course of a decade to achieve.

In fact, it was a Men’s Health cover of Ryan Phillippe that inspired Thieriot to get into weightlifting. “Honestly, that's how it all started for me. Ten years ago that magazine came out, and I said if this guy can do this, so can I,” Thieriot told Men’s Health. And once he got the role on SEAL Team, the actor used this opportunity as motivation to train more seriously. “I had to put in the work and put in the time,” he said.

His Training

The actor usually prefers to train at his home gym in Sonoma County, California. But when in Los Angeles, he either hits Crunch or Gold’s Gym to work out with Eric the Trainer or Danny Hester. “The past year, I focused on increasing my shoulder and back width,” Thieriot said. “The SEAL build is big shoulders, arms, and traps.”

Although he switches between two different routines every few months, Thieriot still trains using superset splits focused on heavyweight and lower reps, followed by lower weight and higher reps. His go-to moves include pullups, bent-over barbell rows, deadlifts, squats, hamstring curls, and leg extension, close-grip bench press, wide grip barbell curls, military barbell press, delt dumbbell flys, and many shrugs. “I do a lot of barbell work to try to build size. I love the incline bench and almost always work with barbells,” he said.

Version one of his training routine dedicates Mondays to chest and triceps, Tuesdays for back and biceps, Wednesdays for legs, Thursdays for shoulders, and Fridays for arms. Meanwhile, version two sees Mondays focusing on chest and back, Tuesdays on shoulders and legs, and Wednesdays on arms. For either routine, Thieriot ensures to take some days off before repeating his grind.

His Diet

To maintain a weight between and pounds while shooting for 10% body fat, Thieriot remains fastidious with his diet. However, he ultimately just listens to his body. “I like eating food, and I'm a big foodie,” he said. “I just try to eat good, healthy food—not junk. I wake up and slam a scoop of whey when I wake up to jumpstart my metabolism.”

For breakfast, he usually eats one cup of oats, one cup of blueberries, four whole eggs, and two pieces of Ezekiel toast with Kerry Gold butter. Sometimes, he prefers yam pancakes. “Right now I make these yam pancakes with my own recipe for 1/2 yam, 1/4 oats, two whole eggs, a bunch of egg white, some protein, and I blend it and make pancakes,” he said. After breakfast, he takes pre-workout and starts exercising.

“As soon as I lift, I have a banana and scoop of whey protein,” Thieriot said. “Then I start cooking lunch. It usually consists of frozen white rice from Trader Joe's and chicken thighs with teriyaki and some avocado. It tastes good and it's easy.” When he’s feeling a snack, the actor opts for protein shakes, almond butter, and apples.

Keeping it simple for dinner, Thieriot eats something similar to lunch or perhaps a steak. “I'm not really crazy regimented about eating certain volumes,” he said. “I listen to my body. If I want sushi, I have sushi. I just don't eat a lot of garbage in general.” Ultimately, he avoids foods with processed sugars or dairy and instead opts for carbs from oats, yams, and white rice. His go-to proteins include eggs, chicken, steak, wild game, or salmon.

‘SEAL Team’ Star Max Thieriot Channels Inner John Denver in ‘Small Town USA’ Post

On Saturday (October 23rd) SEAL Teamstar Max Thieriot took to his Instagram to share a snapshot of him channeling his inner John Denver.

“Country roads, take me home. To the place I belong.” – John Denver  #sonomacoast#senseswines#kuiu#country#[email protected] 📸 @jakwonderly” the SEAL Team castmate writes in his post.

Thieriot and the rest of the SEAL Team crew are preparing for the hit series to move from CBS to Paramount+. Following the fourth episode, which premieres on October 31st, the rest of the show’s latest season episodes will be added to the streaming service every Sunday.

Spencer Hudnut, a SEAL Team executive producer, recently told TV Line that the move will not change the show that much. “It’s the same show. The language might be a little saltier. As it probably would be when people are shooting at you.”

Max Thieriot Talks Directing ‘SEAL Team’ Episodes

While chatting with Parade in , Max Thieriot opened up about what it was like to direct a few episodes of SEAL Team. “It’s definitely a different show to direct. For me, directing the show is nice because it’s a show that I have been on since the beginning. So, I know the look, I know the feeling, I know everything about it.”

While chatting about his approach to directing, the SEAL Team star explained, “So, when I got into this situation, I knew exactly what people would be asking me going into all these meetings. I basically made sure that I had answers to all the questions from early on, so that way, I was always ahead.”

The SEAL Team castmate further shared that he is one of those people that when it comes to directing he understands it. “It all really just makes sense to me. And so, it comes easier to me than acting. So, I put in a ton of work, basically, creating the entire thing in my head. And I sit down and I draw stuff, and I listen to music. I have a really interesting process.”

When asked about fellow SEAL Team star David Boreanaz directing a couple of episodes of the show as well, Thieriot stated the actors chatted about their directing approaches.

“I’ve been shadowing directors since I was 12 years old on movie sets. So, for me, my entire career has been a learning experience. I’ve been quietly stealing good ideas from directors for 20 years now.”

In regards to being thorough on SEAL Team Thieriot added that he does look over the entire script. “Yeah, I always know what’s going on. And, specifically, I would say I was more in tune to it for season three than probably season two.”

&#;SEAL Team&#;: How Portraying a Military Member Got Max Thieriot Excited to Take Role of Clay Spenser

Max Thieriot easily moved from a horror series like the Bates Motel to SEAL Team, a network series that gives fans a personal side to an elite military unit.

Thieriot is Clay Spenser in SEAL Team, a show that shifts from CBS to Paramount+ this fall. On the show, he’s a second-generation member of the SEAL Team. His character is smart and speaks multiple languages. But he needs to prove he’s up to being a member of such an elite military unit. Spenser is a Special Warfare Operator Second Class.

“I read the script honestly was so excited about the character and getting involved in a project like this,” the SEAL Team star said in during a Q&A with the site Seat42F.com.

“I’ve always been a huge fan of, first of all, action and, second, just so honored to be doing something like trying to portray our top-level tier one military men and women, and trying to just honor them as best as possible. After having to learn the things they’ve learned, they sacrifice so much and they’re putting so much to get to this level.”

Thieriot said he “could go on forever” about why he loves the show so much.

SEAL Team Follows Bravo Team Around the World

SEAL Team is a scripted drama that follows the Bravo Team. That team is part of the U.S. Navy. The show premiered in and features David Boreanaz, who has been a TV fixture since the s. Jessica Pare and Neil Brown Jr. also play main characters with Boreanaz and Thieriot.

SEAL Team ran on Wednesday nights on CBS this past season. The audience dropped below 4 million as the season progressed. Rather than canceling the show, CBS opted to place it on its rebranded streaming service. Other scripted shows are there as well, including Evil, which also started on the network.

The show sends members of SEAL Team everywhere. But it may not be including any ripped-from-the-headlines episodes about the current situation in Afghanistan. Matt Webb Mitovich of TV Line recently answered a fan’s question about a possible Afghan episode.

“I am told that the team’s first Season 5 mission will take them to a completely different part of the world,” Webb Mitovich wrote.

Meanwhile, the year-old Thieriot is building businesses away from acting. He’s promoting Senses Wines, a vineyard he’s owned for the past decade. Earlier this month, he wanted his social media followers to taste the perfect Pinot Noir when it becomes available this fall. He posted a photo on Instagram and captioned it:

“Can’t wait to try the Pinot noir that comes from our Thieriot-Bodega vineyard! Good news is we have some other stunning wines in the Senses Wines fall release … cheers y’all!”

Stay tuned, SEAL Team returns, Oct.

Clay \u0026 Stella - Seal Team

It was recently confirmed that CBS military drama series SEAL Team has been renewed for a fifth season, and one of its leading actors just shared a throwback photo on Instagram illustrating just how much has changed in the last four years.

Max Thieriot posted a "before and after" picture which shows the weight loss and muscle transformation he has undergone since getting the role. Thieriot, who starred in the Point Break reboot and Bates Motel prior to getting the role of Clay Spenser on SEAL Team, revealed that one Men's Health cover star in particular inspired him on his fitness journey.

"Pre SEAL Team vs. headed into season 5… the work doesn't stop when you leave set," he wrote. "I have pushed myself mentally and physically for this TV show. I've literally bled for it, more than once. Many things in life are beyond your control… physically being in shape is not! Took me five years to get where I am… @ryanphillippe on the cover of @menshealthmag was the tipping point for me strangely enough. At the time I thought he looked great and decided I too could look like that and be on that cover. I believe I’ve accomplished 1/2 of my goal."

Thieriot's famous friends chimed in on his transformation in the comments. "Holy Thor!!! Give this man a COVER!!!" wrote Jensen Ackles. "You're always my cover boy," said SEAL Team co-star A.J. Buckley, while actor Ethan Suplee, who has been on his own weight loss journey, commented: "Bro, you look INCREDIBLE!!"
