The BMW 8 Series is a range of grand tourer coupes and convertibles produced by BMW.

The 8 Series was introduced in 1990 under the E31 model code and was only available as a two-door coupé.[1] It is powered by a range of naturally aspirated V8 and V12petrol engines.[2] The E31 started production just as E24 6 Series production ended, however it is not considered a direct successor.[3] The E31 was discontinued in 1999 due to poor sales.[4]

The model range was later reintroduced in 2018 with the second generation, G15 8 Series.[5] It launched in coupé (G15), convertible (G14), and four-door Gran Coupé (G16) body styles, as the successor to the F06/F12/F13 6 Series lineup.[6] The G15 8 Series introduces an inline-sixdiesel engine,[7][8] and a high-performance BMW M8 trim later joined the lineup as well as the luxury inspired Alpina B8.[9]

First generation (E31; 1990–1999)[edit]

BMW 840Ci

Design work of the first generation E31 8 Series began in 1984, with final design phase and production development starting in 1986. The car debuted at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show, and was produced until 1999.[10] The 8 Series was designed to move beyond the market of the original E24 6 Series, featuring greater performance and an increased price. The 8 Series was the first road car to offer a V12 engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and was one of the first vehicles to be fitted with electronic drive-by-wire throttle.[11] The 8 Series was also among one of BMW's first cars to use a multi-link rear axle.[12]

Second generation (G14/G15/G16; 2018–present)[edit]

The BMW 8 Series (G14) was announced on June 15, 2018 with sales commencing from November 2018.[13] It was initially available as a coupé (codenamed G15), with the convertible (G14) and four-door Gran Coupé (G16) variants introduced later, succeeding the F06/F12/F13 6 Series lineup.[14] Production commenced in late 2018 at the BMW assembly plant in Dingolfing, Germany.[15]

Direct competitors to the BMW 8 Series coupé and convertible are the Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupé & cabriolet. The BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé which has improved rear passenger space dimensions compared to the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé (F06),[16] is seen as a flashier sportier alternative to its platform-mate, the more traditional BMW 7 Series sedan, and is expected to compete with the rumored next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class four-door coupé.[17][18][19][20]

BMW reintroduced the 8 Series for 2019 after a long hiatus since the model's last appearance in North America in 1997. The 8 Series replaces the 6 Series as a 5 Series-based coupe and convertible, though the new model is a few inches longer and wider than its predecessor. Like the departed 6, it's also available as a four-door Gran Coupe for those seeking more style than a 5 Series can provide but still need four-door practicality. The 8 Series Gran Coupe competes with other style-first luxury four-doors such as the Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS.

We expected the 8 Series to underwhelm—driving like a 5 Series with fewer doors—but we were pleasantly surprised to be wrong. The 8 Series is an excellent grand touring coupe, convertible, and sedan, and the M8 is a monster. Everyone who drove the 8 commented on how much smaller it feels than it actually is, and we praised the accurate steering rack that provided plenty of feedback. It's quite a looker, too.

Chassis balance is excellent, and especially in V-8 models, the rear end is happy to kick out without making it feel as if you've lost control. Brake feel could be better, but it doesn't ruin the experience. This is a car that shines when driven enthusiastically on a winding road, and it inspires confidence in its driver. It also works as a comfortable cruiser and includes impressive standard luxury content like heated armrests, a glass panoramic roof, a power rear sunshade, and 16-speaker premium audio.

It's not without flaws; the infotainment system takes some getting used to and the rear seats in two-door models are pretty useless. Then again, if you're worried about rear seats, you'll buy the Gran Coupe. Expecting to be disappointed, we were wowed by BMW's new bruiser. The 8 Series rocks.

Under the hood of your 8 Series you'll find a six- or eight-cylinder forced induction engine mated to an eight-speed automatic. The entry-level 840i is powered by a 3.0-liter single-turbo inline-six that develops 335 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque. Six-cylinder models can be had with RWD or AWD, but those with the V-8 are AWD only. BMW estimates a six-cylinder 8 Series Gran Coupe will reach 60 in 4.6-4.9 seconds depending on the drive type. The 840i Gran Coupe is EPA-rated at 20-22/27-29 mpg city/highway, with RWD models carrying a 2-mpg advantage.

The other option is the M850i that sports a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 in place of the 840i's inline-six. In this application, it makes an impressive 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, which in our 2020 Car of the Year testing, helped an M850i coupe gallop to 60 in  just 3.4 seconds. The M850i Gran Coupe returns 17/25 mpg.

For ultimate performance in your 8 Series, check out the M8 Competition, which rocks a version of the 4.4-liter V-8 making 617 hp and 553 lb-ft. BMW says that car will complete its 0-60 run in as little as 3.0 seconds flat.

The 8 Series comes standard with driver attention alert and auto emergency braking with pedestrian detection, though more active safety features are available with the Driving Assistance and Driving Assistance Professional packages. The former adds park assist, a 360-degree camera system, front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and lane departure warning. Opting for the Professional package means adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, extended auto emergency braking, blind-spot protection with steering assist, and active lane centering.

All 8 Series variants seat four or five, but your rear passengers will be happiest in the extended-wheelbase Gran Coupe. In that model, folks up front have 42.1 inches of legroom, and those in the rear have a very acceptable 36.6 inches, compared to just 29.5 in the coupe and convertible. Likewise, the Gran Coupe has a cargo capacity advantage at 15.5 cubic feet instead of the 14.8 you'd get in coupe and 12.4 in the convertible.

At the center of every 8 Series interior sits a 10.3-inch iDrive touchscreen infotainment system, which includes Apple CarPlay compatibility and navigation as standard. The base audio setup is a 16-speaker Harman Kardon system that can be upgraded to a more powerful 16-speaker Bowers & Wilkins setup. Tech features including a full-color head-up display and a wireless charging pad are included as standard.

2020 BMW 840i

Even in its most accessible form, the 8 Series is properly well-equipped. The 840i starts with a 3.0-liter turbo inline-six, eight-speed automatic with paddle shifters, RWD (AWD is available), sport exhaust, 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED laser headlights with auto high beams, exterior LED welcome lights, heated power-folding side mirrors, and a power liftgate. But that's just the exterior.

Step inside and you'll find extended leather upholstery, ash gray wood trim, and a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel. Infotainment is handled by a 10.3-inch iDrive touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay and navigation, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, satellite radio, and 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio. A color head-up display is also standard, as is a proximity key with remote start, exterior mirror, driver's seat memory settings, 14-way heated power sport seats with four-way lumbar support, and even heated armrests. It doesn't stop there, though. More standard features include a power rear sunshade, a panoramic moonroof, four-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, soft-close doors, LED ambient interior lighting, a wireless charging pad, auto emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and driver attention alert.

2020 BMW M850i

Opting for the not-quite-M M Sport variant adds a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8, standard AWD, adaptive M suspension with active roll stabilization, and an aerodynamic body kit with M rear spoiler. Other hardware improvements include M Sport brakes, an M Sport differential, and 20-inch M alloy wheels. Stainless steel fabric interior trim is standard inside, and so are a dark headliner, M sport steering wheel, and heated and ventilated 16-way power front seats with adjustable side bolsters.

Think of BMW's best cars and what comes to mind? Stylish, fun-to-drive sedans that are both luxuriously appointed and a joy to live with. Look to the New Class of the 1960s and 1970s, the E30 3 Series of the 1980s, the E39 5 Series of the late 1990s, and the E46 3 Series of the early 2000s. We aren't saying you should add the 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe to that list of legends, but it certainly possesses some of the traits that endeared those older cars to generations of fans.

The 840i Gran Coupe falls short of the heights set by its iconic predecessors in a few important ways, though. Like almost every BMW model on sale, this swoopy sedan doesn't communicate with its driver. And while BMW's tech is far more intuitive than it was 20 years ago, the company has fallen backward over the past several years and is building systems that have become harder to learn.

Still, the 840i is high on the list of new BMW products we'd consider. Its sonorous engine, fun-to-drive character, and easy sportiness make this a fine new entry in the BMW line.

Pros

BMW abandoned its conservative-but-attractive styling language well over a decade ago, but the 8 Series Gran Coupe does a great job of capturing some of that iconic design restraint. It's low and wide, featuring a traditional long-hood-short-deck layout that emphasizes the rear-wheel-drive platform. So even though there are some odd style details – specifically the grille and headlight styling and the busy lower section of the rear bumper – the overarching design is lovely. The 8-Series Gran Coupe is an eye-catcher.

The M engines gets all the attention, but our favorite powerplant from BMW is the turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six featured on a huge number of the automaker's products (seriously, you'll find some form of this engine, code-named B58, on nearly every non-M-badged BMW product short of the X1, X2, and new 2-Series Gran Coupe). There's a reason for that. It’s smooth and refined in everyday driving, and plenty powerful too, revving freely and emitting a fine sound out the back. An eight-speed automatic sends power to the rear wheels (all-wheel drive is available), firing off seamless gear changes in everyday driving. In more dynamic situations, the ZF-sourced box will rifle off upshifts and downshifts in Sport and Sport Plus.

Combine the powertrain with a neatly balanced suspension and a quick steering rack, and you get a damn good recipe for fun everyday driving. The 840i is quick enough to thrill, but not so powerful or high strung that it's difficult to drive – the accessibility of the performance is ideal. At the same time, the 840i isn't insistent about hard driving. Set to its more docile drive modes (the usual BMW array of Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus is present), it's a fine luxury sedan with a composed ride, a quiet cabin, and high-quality materials. The 840i would make an exceptional daily driver.

Cons

The 840i's 3.0-liter engine produces 335 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque, figures that are hardly impressive in a world where performance variants with double that output are increasingly common. That said, there's enough power to hit 60 in just 4.9 seconds, all while offering customers a near-perfect fifty-fifty weight distribution (it's actually 50.8 percent to 49.2). Unfortunately, though, more speed is only available with the M850i (or the far pricier M8), a car that's only available with all-wheel drive, weighs significantly more than our 4,300-pound tester, and lacks its excellent balance. The M850i may hit 60 in 3.7 seconds, but it's nearly 600 pounds heavier and has more weight over its front axle (53.9 percent to 46.1).

This is a problem common in BMWs of late – there's virtually no feedback from the steering or through the chassis. Sure, the 840i is agile and its steering has the right amount of heft, but it never really says what's happening between the four tires and the road. There's just none of the communication that older BMWs used to offer in spades. That's ultimately only a problem when you're really pushing the car – otherwise, it's only a minor annoyance.

It may be at the bottom of the 8-Series pecking order, but the 840i still carries a lot of technology. BMW's latest iDrive system and digital gauge cluster are both standard, and our tester carried the whole array of active safety gear. That's normal – you'll find a similar setup in a comparable Mercedes-Benz, Audi, or Porsche. But each of those rivals does a better job of integrating the disparate systems. There's no real relation between the digital gauge cluster and the iDrive display, with the former featuring less of the customization and, in turn, usefulness of MBUX or Audi Virtual Cockpit, and the latter simply being too deep with menus. We drive hundreds of vehicles per year, a fair few of which are BMWs, and despite that it takes us a good chunk of time to refamiliarize ourselves with the ins and outs of these systems.

The 8-series coupe and convertible sit high atop BMW's car lineup with their $112,895 starting price, 523-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine, and swanky interior. But the 8's two-door setup left a little something to be desired, so BMW has created the 8-series Gran Coupe. It's a longer version of the 8-series with five seats (although we'd protest having to sit in a second-row, middle-seat berth), a new-to-8-series inline-six, and an M sport model with the same brutish V-8 that powers the two-door M850i, currently the only 8-series available for purchase (a full-bore M8 Gran Coupe is forthcoming).

The Gran Coupe shares the basics of its exterior design with its progenitor, but the cabin is longer and taller compared to the small cockpit in the two-door models. The 8GC's wheelbase is 7.9 inches longer and the car itself will be 9.0 inches longer, 1.2 inches wider, and 2.2 inches taller compared with the 8-series Classic. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard with the 840i, but that model can come with 19- or 20-inch wheels, too. The M850i comes standard with 20s but can be fitted with 19s for a more comfortable ride. A panoramic moonroof is standard and incorporates the antenna, so there's no shark fin to spoil the Gran Coupe's silhouette. Starting this fall, the M850i Gran Coupe will also be available with an optional carbon-fiber roof.

Photos of the 8-series Gran Coupe reveal a cabin appropriately luxurious to its asking price. Leather interior trim is standard, and can come in black, ivory, or cognac in the 840i. In addition to the standard leather choices, buyers can choose a two-tone leather interior that mixes either blue, red, or brown with black. The longer, taller exterior means more space for passengers inside, where there is 3.4 inches more rear headroom and 7.1 inches more rear legroom than in the standard 8-series. The trunk is 0.7 cubic feet larger, too.

The introduction of the Gran Coupe marks the first use of BMW's turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six in the 8-series family in the U.S., which had previously been limited to a single V-8 powertrain. BMW says the engine will go in 840i and 840i xDrive models and will make 335 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque. BMW estimates a 4.9-second zero-to-60 mph time in rear-wheel drive 840i and thinks the car can go 0.3 second faster with the added traction of the optional all-wheel-drive system.

BMW's 523-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 will be available in the M850i trim, which comes standard with all-wheel drive. We clocked a 2019 M850i xDrive coupe at 3.3 seconds to 60 mph and 11.5 seconds through the quarter-mile. No word yet on how much the Gran Coupe weighs, but BMW is estimating a still-blistering 3.7-second zero-to-60-mph time. Both engines pair with the same eight-speed automatic transmission, and every Gran Coupe will come standard with paddle shifters.

Forward-collision warning and low-speed automated emergency braking are standard, and a full suite of driver-assistance systems including adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring is available. A large head-up display is also standard and can display speed limits and warn of no-passing zones in addition to details like vehicle speed and navigation instructions. The Gran Coupe uses BMW's iDrive 7 infotainment system displayed across a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 10.3-inch center screen.

The 8-series Gran Coupe will go on sale as a 2020 model in September 2019. Rear-wheel-drive 840i models will start at $85,895. All-wheel-drive six-cylinder Gran Coupes will cost $88,795. M850i variants will go for $109,895.
