tomah wiI can't figure out how to get at that starter bolt on back side between engine block and starter..
Wondering if removing solenoid first would help?
Special wrench? thanks

MidwestI have seen a special starter wrench hanging on a parts shelf at the local jd store. I needed to take starter off JD , finally ground down a wrench so i could get were I needed it to fit. Damn engineers!! Now I know about the special starter wrench. Good luck!

NEMOStarter wrench. John Deere makes one (JDE80) but the one from Snap-On (B) works better for me. Good luck.

central Indianayou either use the special deere wrench, put several extensions together with a universal on the end, or cut and bend an ordinary wrench to go around the corner..I have used all three methodssometimes getting the nut started is even more fun

High Springs, Florida starter is a bear too. Fabricated my own wrench.

EC KansasI made my own.

N Illinois (I39 & US 30)Get the special JD wrench (or equivalent), you won't be sorry. Having small hands helps too. When you put the starter back on, start that rear nut first, because you WILL drop it a couple of times before you get it started. If you have a neighbor that runs JD equipment, chances are he has one of those wrenches.

Lorenzo, txdeffinatley get the wrench. worth the money. itll make the job so much easier

Brazilton KSA couple long extensions and a wobble socket works as good as anything, as long as there is nothing else in the way in front of the starter.

It's a Deere thingif you are going to work on Deere's you are gonna have to deal with the bolt behind the starter sooner or later.

No worse then a Ford Basildon built 3, 4, or 6 cylinder. In fact, not quite as bad; at least Deere uses a stud & nut on the back, Ford uses a bolt.

Not familiar with the starter, but I just got the Lucas starters put back on my Ford 's this morning. 1/2" drive extension with a deep 9/16" socket worked for me.

Yes, I was cussing the engineer who put that bolt on the back side! ;-)

I don't think we've ever owned a 4 cyl Deere.

edit:  well, the but it's kind of a redheaded stepchild

I took 2 sockets and welded them together side by side, use extension in the one not on the nut I keep cheap china made sockets and open end box end wrenches just for making special tools that are used once or twice a yearjust remember keep a bolt in the easy ones to keep starter tight and sometimes you get lucky and can screw it off easy

Fruita COI actually made a JDE out of a cheap 9/16 once, I was on a service call in Jensen, Utah. Guy had a he needed the starter off of, & I didn't have my wrench, but he had a Taiwan 9/16 & a torch
You had to bring up the Dubuque Puke, huh?

Darke County, OhioI made my own also. Took blue tip wrench to a good 9/16 wrench and put the proper curves and bends in it (if its not quite right , tweek it some more) and presto it works. Good luck!

West TexasIf its the same as a , a short 9/16 socket with 3/8 drive extension works just fine. Booger to get back on. I put elastic tape across the socket then force the nut into the socket to keep it from falling out.

Dietrich, Idaho and Mountain Home, IdahoI second the 9/16 socket and 3/8 drive extension. Have taken at least six or seven off this way without any trouble(may drop the nut every once in a while, but no big deal). Put it back on with the socket and extension without any big problem(may take a time or two to get the nut started, again no big deal).

South GeorgiaJohn, I was just about to ask you if you'd seen this thread. LOL, I reckon you get around more than I do.

John Deer X300 Starter Bendix Trouble

Grabbing my hair, I closed my eyes in pain and his rudeness and only listened to him screaming. - Is that all you can do, you dirty whore ??. Turning my back to him, I was still on my knees, spreading my holes with my fingers, slowly began to move my hips. Backward. then forward.

She remembered Mother vaguely - she drank no less than her father and, drunk, froze to death in a snowdrift, leaving Her an orphan. At the age of four. She was brought up by her aunt, her mother's cousin, who, it seemed, did not know other words except abusive, and drank and walked no less than her mother. Something like She studied three classes in a rural school, where she first learned the male interest in her person.
