Ford F Navigation, Backup Camera, Audio Upgrade and Much More!

Ford F Navigation

Ford F’s really are great trucks. Especially when they are diesel-powered. We have had a LOT of fun with Ford Super Duty trucks over the years. It’s almost like the “Honda Civic” of the truck world.  There is an endless supply of upgrades and parts available for them! We have conquered jobs in these trucks anywhere from a simple iPod interface to full-blown stereo and performance enhancement projects. We recently had a long time Westminster, MD client bring us a Ford F for an upgrade. His goals were pretty straight forward:

  • He wanted GPS navigation with SiriusXM Satellite Radio and an integrated backup camera.
  • Since the factory stereo did NOT sound very good, he wanted to do an audio upgrade to improve the sound quality and output.
  • Finally, he also wanted us to do a few fuel economy upgrades to the truck.

And away we go!

Kenwood Navigation Source Unit Offers Tons of Features

For the GPS navigation system and the source unit for our other planned stereo upgrades we decided to go with the Kenwood DNXHD. This unit has some really great features. The navigation software built into it is a partnership between Kenwood and Garmin. If you haven’t experienced it before, Garmin navigation is VERY user-friendly. All the menus are easy to access, the buttons are large and easily visible, and the voice prompts are clear and right on target. The DNXHD also gave the client the ability to play his iPhone through it with full control on the touch screen. It gave him access to all the music on the phone itself, as well as control of Pandora and a few other internet radio apps! We installed a SiriusXM tuner behind the radio so that it would come up as an added source on the touch screen. For the finishing touch of this navigation installation, we installed a backup camera above the rear license plate. The clear image from behind the truck is displayed on the touch screen of the DNXHD as soon as the client shifts the F into reverse.  This makes it MUCH easier to line up his hitch with his trailer! Now it&#;s a one-person job, instead of having someone help to guide him into place.

4 Speakers + Watts = 1 Happy Client!

JL Audio XD
Ford F Speaker
JL Audio XD

The factory speakers in a Ford F are pretty awful!  There.  We said it!  Ford put very little effort into making the stereo in Super Duty’s sound good, knowing they were mainly being sold as work trucks. But who wouldn’t want to enjoy good quality sound especially since it’s a work truck and you’re in it all day? We went right to work replacing the 7-year-old paper factory speakers. We installed German Maestro Concept Series speakers in the front doors and Powerbass 2XL series speakers in the rear doors. The sound quality matters more in the front since that’s where you are sitting.  We decided to put a higher quality speaker up front to make a bigger improvement and still maintain the client’s budget for all these upgrades.

To go above and beyond just replacing the speakers, we also installed foam rings on each speaker. This closed cell foam couples the speaker to the door panel, eliminating resonant sound waves from bouncing around inside the door. Essentially, the foam ring helps to push all the sound waves directly out of the grille in the door and into the cabin of the truck. All four speakers made a dramatic difference in the sound quality of the stereo in this F

The client also wanted more output so we knew we would need to add a good source of power for the speakers. After demonstrating a few amplifiers to the client, we chose to install a JL Audio XD amplifier under the rear seat. This “small footprint” amplifier delivers a heck of a punch! Now that the speakers were powered at watts a piece the audio system jammed! It had a lot more output and we knew the client would be thrilled.

Superchips Power Programmer Adds 47HP and Improves Fuel Economy

Ford F

The last goal that this client wanted us to work on was fuel mileage. There are many improvements that can be made on a diesel truck that offer improved fuel mileage and make the truck a lot more fun to drive at the same time! We chose a Superchips power programmer and an Airaid air intake system. The Superchips Flashpaq has three levels of tuning. The performance tune adds a whopping horsepower and ft/lbs of torque!! This makes it seem like a completely different truck! Since this particular client was mainly interested in fuel mileage we programmed the truck with the “tow” tune, which still gave him a 47hp and 81ft/lbs improvement! The Superchips tuner allowed him to adjust a few other parameters such as shift pressure, speed limiter, torque management, and tire size calibration. The Airaid air intake system was also a great addition allowing much more air to flow into the engine at a higher velocity, which in turn allows the truck to build boost faster (and the faster a diesel engine is in boost the better the fuel mileage!)

Mission Accomplished!

We were very happy to deliver this finished project to the client. When he got in and turned up the stereo his face lit up with excitement. THAT is the reason we do what we do!  We don’t ever want any client to leave disappointed or feeling like we let them down.  Our goal is to always go above and beyond expectations in any way possible.

** UPDATE 09/03/09 ** PIE auxilary input adapter!

Click Here for a PDF version of this article

Ever since I bought my truck I had planned to upgrade the stereo unit.  I'm pretty sure everything below holds true for all Super Duty pickups, but before buying a new unit its always best to pull yours and verify the mounting type, plugs, etc.  I know Ford used this stereo type back in , because I gave my original stereo unit to my Dad to put in a Light Duty F and it was a direct replacement for his AM/FM unit.

Here's the original stereo from my truck, just the typical AM/FM single CD unit.

These generation Ford stereos are double-DIN units so the aftermarket options aren't so great.  The most common option is to get a double DIN install kit which allows you to mount a single DIN unit at the top and use the remaining height of the double DIN space as a storage pocket.  Here's an example of this kit from Crutchfield.

I didn't particularly like this option so I started researching the stock Ford stereos from other vehicles.  I knew there were better options out there because my Dad & sister both have in dash 6-disc changers in their Explorers.  So, I started researching whether or not I could get one of these units and use it as a direct replacement for mine.

I found that there are a LOT of different versions of stereos in the newer (, and some ) Fords that appear to be a direct fit.  However, there are different stereo types, mounting types, and connector types to watch out for.

First, the stereo types.  Starting around , most Ford vehicles started using the larger (taller) stereo units similar to the one on the left, below.  The one on the right is the typical size, that will fit.

Next, the mounting type.  In order for the stereo to be a direct replacement, it has to have two release holes on each side.  If the release holes aren't there, then it uses brackets at the top & bottom to mount and will not be a direct replacement.  You can see these holes in the above pic on the right.

Next, the connector types.  From what I've read on the internet, the typical connectors are black and are referred to as "world plugs".  The newer type stereos use "Audiophile" or "phase 2" connectors which are gray.  It is possible to find an earlier size stereo with the release holes, and phase 2 connectors so that's something to watch for.  However, there are adapter harnesses available that will make it work.

Here's a pic of the "world plugs" like my stereo has.  The one circled in red is the only one used in my truck.  I'm not sure what the other plug is.  Maybe for the satellite radio input?

Here's a pic of the phase 2 or Audiophile connectors which will not (without an adapter harness) work.

So, once I found which size, mounting type, and connector type I needed, I narrowed my search to find the features that I wanted.  I was shooting for a 6-disc in dash changer that plays MP3s.  I watched ebay for quite a while before finding, bidding on, and winning the one I wanted.  Mine is part number 6L8TCDD and thanks to some great info from DavidB on the Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forum I now know that this radio is from a Ford Escape.  So, I went to the Ford-Fleet site and downloaded the owner's manual for an '06 Escape, which has all the info for operating the radio.

Not all auctions have good descriptions of what the unit really is.  One way to easily distinguish a single-CD from a 6-disc changer is that the button to the left of the CD slot will have "LOAD" on it, on the CD6 models.  On the single CD units, that button will just have "CD" on it.  Some of the CD6 units actually have "CD6" written on the face somewhere, but not all of them.

Similarly, one way to tell whether or not a unit plays MP3s is to see if there are any buttons that have "FOLDER" on them.

So, the install was as easy as I'd hoped.  Used the U-shaped removal tools to remove the old one.  NOTE -- just a technicality, but the picture below is actually of my "new" stereo.  Since posting the write-up, I've received a few questions about how to use the removal tools, so I threw this picture in there for reference.

Then I plugged in the antenna cable and stereo harness in the new one, pushed it into the slot, and clipped it into place.

** UPDATE 09/03/09 ** P.I.E adapter for auxilary input.

While traveling recently, my little girl was watching her DVD player and it was raining.  All the rain on the roof made it so she couldn't hear it, even with volume all the way up.  Wouldn't it be nice to pipe that audio through the truck speakers?

After some research I found that the FRDN-AUX/S would be sufficient to connect to the unused connector on the back of my stereo and give me an auxilary input.  This device allowed me to use the "SAT" input as an auxilary input.  Here's the PIE adapter I bought.

As you can see, this box has two RCA audio jacks on it for the input.  A mm audio jack to RCA adapter cable would work well for this.  However, I didn't want a cord dangling all the time, so I found the "Poly Planar ICM MP3 Adapter Cable" that has a mm panel mount audio jack.  Then just connect the audio device, with a cable that has mm plugs on both ends, included with the kit.

After temporarily connecting everything up to verify it all works, I began the actual installation.

First, remove the stereo with the typical U-shaped tools.  Disconnect the connector and the antenna on the back, and set it to the side.  This picture shows the connector on the back where the PIE adapter will connect.

The next thing to do was to decide where to mount the mm jack.  Since my truck doesn't have the airbag disable switch, I chose to mount it beside the power point.  There was plenty of clearance behind the panel where the disable switch would have been.

Next, I used a 3/4" wood bit to drill the hole required.  Measure 10 times, drill once!

Then install the jack.

Next, decide how to mount the PIE adapter behind the radio.  I found that it would fit nicely below the ductwork.  I used a couple cable ties to attach it to two tabs I found with nothing attached to them.  Then connect the RCA plugs to it.

Next, connect the power and ground wires of the PIE adapter appropriately.

** UPDATE 07/07/10 ** The PIE adapter failed and I returned it for a replacement.  The replacement works so at least the problem wasn't in my stereo.  As a measure of safety for the new unit, I decided to power it through a switch, so that its only on when I need it.  Before, it was powered up constantly and I only used it a few times.  I don't think that contributed to the failure, but it won't hurt to put it on a switch.  More info on the switch install in my Auxiliary Switch Install writeup here.

Finally, plug the PIE connector, the original connector, and the antenna back into the stereo and reinstall it into the dash.

Now, connect up any auxilary audio device (DVD player, MP3 player, IPOD, etc) to the jack on the dash and press the "SAT" button, and see it work!

Upgrade 2002 stereo ford f250

Sony High Power Radio Upgrade Adds Tech to Ford F

A client of ours from Walnutport brought his Ford F to our team to see about getting a new radio that could provide some modern features. His old factory radio had to be replaced, and he was looking for Bluetooth and some new technology to make driving easier. We were excited to get the chance to help.

We selected a Sony XAV-AX High Power radio that not only provides Bluetooth, but also adds Apple CarPlay functionality for easy access to his phone contacts and maps while driving he&#;s around. The radio features two USB ports for easy connection to his phone for CarPlay and for charging the phone. We used a dual USB plug and placed it in the factory power plug hole so it remains hidden when not in use. This Sony radio&#;s High Power amplifier really woke the system up, and the client was very pleased with the power it provided.

Don&#;t forget that you can take a relaxing day trip in our immediate area while we work on your vehicle. Check out this page for local attraction recommendations and travel info to help you plan your trip.

Now discussing:

In the morning, Aunt Anya sent me with a smile to wake the sleepyhead - I'll sleep. No need to say with what pleasure I ran to fulfill her request. In general, I believe that the moment of awakening is a moment of sincerity. At the very moment of awakening, a person is what he really is, good or evil, cute or repulsive, good or bad, and, in.

The end, beautiful or ugly.
