With the new USB-C connection type, there’s a whole lot more you can achieve than with either USB-A or USB-B type of connections. Still, you may probably use them today.

With the USB-C connection, you not only can charge your computer, but also connect to other USB-C type devices you have with you like your smartphone, media player, portable speaker, display adapter, charger, or a docking station.

The USB-C not working in Windows 10 can be caused by a combination of hardware and software issues.

1. Replace and update the USB drivers

When this notification pops up, it means your USB device or computer ran into a problem. The possible causes include a problem with the device or computer driver or a different problem altogether.

You can try and fix it first by taking down the error code on your computer or device, and depending on the error code you see, use the steps below:

Update drivers automatically

Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter

  1. Right-click Start and select Control Panel

Update the driver using Windows Update

Use Device Manager

2. Slow USB charger connected

  • Your charger is incompatible with your computer or device
  • The charger doesn’t have enough power to charge your computer or device. A computer or device with USB-C connectors has larger power limits, so if the connector supports USB power delivery, charging will be faster and at greater levels of power
  • The charger is not connected to a charging port on your computer or device
  • The charging cable doesn’t meet the power needs for the charger itself, the computer or device
  • There’s dirt or dust within the USB port on your computer or device that may prevent the charger from the proper insertion
  • The charger is connected to your computer or device from through an external dock, or hub

In order to fix these problems, use the charger and cable that came with your computer or device so as to speed up charging.

Another operation to resolve the slow charging for fixing the USB-C issue is to clean the port and connector.

If dirt or dust is stuck in the USB-C port doesn’t allow a proper connection, ask for specialized help to clean your device.

3. Your PC or phone isn’t charging

The possible causes for this include:

  • An incompatible charger
  • A charger with fewer power limits so it cannot charge your computer or device
  • The charger isn’t connected to the charging port on your computer or device
  • The charging cable doesn’t meet the power needs for the charger, for your computer, or even for your device
  • Dirt or dust in the USB ports may prevent correct insertion of the charger
  • The charger is connected through an external hub or dock

In order to resolve these possible causes, you can use the charger and cable that came included with your computer or device.

Also, ensure you’re connecting the charger to the USB-C port on your computer or device, and use compressed air to clean the ports before inserting the USB-C connector.

4. Display connection might be limited

Some of the reasons that the display connection may be limited include the connected device or dongle:

  • Has new features for the USB-C connector that your computer or device does not support
  • Is not connected to the correct port on your computer or device
  • Is connected to your computer or device from an external dock or hub
  • Is competing with many other devices or dongles connected to your computer or device that use USB-C connection
  • Has new features for USB-C connectors that the cable does not support

Solutions to resolving the above causes are to ensure that your external display and cable connected to your computer (or phone) support DisplayPort or MHL alternate modes.

Run a System Scan to discover potential errors

  3. Touch Phone Update and select Check for Updates to check for the latest Windows updates and device drivers.

6. USB port malfunction

Here, you’ll get either of two types of notifications:

  • The USB port doesn’t support DisplayPort or Thunderbolt, or MHL.
  • The USB device might have limited functionality when connected to this port.

The possible causes for this are either the connected device or dongle isn’t connected to the correct USB-C port on your computer or device, or it’s connected using an external hub or dock.

To fix this, ensure the device or dongle is connected directly to your computer or phone, and then connect it to the correct USB-C port that supports the device or dongle’s features.

7. USB or Thunderbolt device functionality might be limited

The reasons you get this notification when experiencing the USB-C not working Windows 10 issue are similar to those listed at solution number 4.

Solutions for the above causes are to ensure your computer or device, as well as the cable, supports similar USB-C features as the connected device, and that the device or dongle is directly connected to your computer.

Also ensure you connect directly the device or dongle to your computer or phone, and make sure to the USB-C port on your computer or phone, which supports the correct Alternate Mode.

8. USB device might not be working properly

If your USB device is not working properly, it could be because your computer or device cannot power the connected device.

It is probably because it isn’t supported, or the amount of power has temporarily been limited to the device because your PC is running on battery power.

The issue may appear if the computer or device is providing power to other connected devices so it limits power, or it requires more power than what your computer or device can provide.

In this case, try using a different computer or device, plug a power adapter to your USB device, plug your computer into an external power source so that it’s not running on battery power.

Also, disconnect other USB devices you’re not using, from your computer.

9. These two PCs or mobile devices cannot communicate

This notification may appear when you cannot connect two Windows computers or devices together with the USB-C connection, or the particular connections are not supported.

In this case, try connecting your Windows computer to a Windows device instead.

If your external display isn't detected or appears blurry on your Mac

Try these steps if the image on an external display connected to your Mac is blank or doesn't look the way you expect.

If your display is blank or not detected

Try these steps if you don't see an image on your display.

Check how many displays you can connect

To find out how many external displays your Mac supports, check its technical specifications page or use the Support tab in About This Mac: 

  1. Choose Apple menu  > About This Mac.
  2. Click the Support tab, then click Specifications.
  3. On the webpage that appears, the number of displays your Mac supports appears under Video Support or Graphics.

Check your cable or adapter

Disconnect the cable from your external display from your Mac, then reconnect it. If the cable from your external display doesn't connect to the ports on your Mac, you can use a Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C adapter.

If your display appears blurry

If images or text on your display appear blurry or pixelated, check the resolution and brightness of your display.

Adjust the resolution

  1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
  2. Click the Displays icon.
  3. Press and hold the Option key while you click Scaled to see additional resolutions for the second display.

If you're using more than one display, and you can see the image on one of the displays, you can also use Displays preferences to check for connected displays.

If the expected resolution doesn't appear for your display, check the specifications page to see what your Mac supports.

Adjust the brightness

To adjust the brightness of your Apple display, press the increase brightness key  or the decrease brightness key  on your keyboard.

You can also use the brightness adjustment for each connected display in System Preferences > Displays.

With a USB-C connection, you can charge your Windows 11 PC, and you can also connect to other USB Type-C devices such as mobile phones, docking stations, display adapters, and other devices that have a USB-C port.

Unfortunately, some combinations of hardware and software may cause problems. If this happens, you may get a notification that there’s something wrong with the USB-C connection. We’ve provided some tips below to help you fix things. And if you want to change whether you see notifications about USB issues, here's how:

  1. Select Search, type usb and select USB settings from the list of results.

You might be able to fix your USB device

Your USB device ran into a problem. Follow these steps to try to fix it. (Error code ____)

  1. Find the error code on your Windows 11 PC and then note it.

  2. For the error code you see, follow the troubleshooting steps described in Error codes in Device Manager in Windows.

  • The device or dongle isn't connected to the correct USB-C port on your PC.

  • The device or dongle is using an external hub or dock to connect to your PC.

  • Too many other Alternate Mode devices or dongles are connected to your PC.

Notes: 

  • USB Type-C has a new feature called Alternate Modes. If your USB-C cable has this feature, you can connect to non-USB devices that support the same Alternate Mode. For example, if your USB-C cable has the Thunderbolt Alternate Mode, you can connect to Thunderbolt devices. There's no setting to turn on—your device automatically uses the appropriate mode if it's supported. 

  • The Alternate Mode feature must be supported on the PC's hardware and software, and the connected device or dongle. You might also need a specific USB-C cable.

Display connection might be limited

DisplayPort/MHL connection might not work. Try using a different cable.

Possible causes

  • Make sure your PC, the external display, and the cable all support DisplayPort or MHL alternate modes.

  • Make sure the device or dongle is connected directly to your PC.

  • Make sure the device or dongle is connected to the USB-C port on your PC that supports the correct Alternate Mode. For example, a DisplayPort Alternate Mode adapter should be connected to the USB-C port on your PC that supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode.

  • The device or dongle you connected to has new features for USB-C that your PC doesn’t support.

  • The device you connected to has new features for USB-C that the cable doesn’t support.

  • The device or dongle isn't connected to the correct USB-C port on your PC.

  • The device or dongle is connected to your PC using an external hub or dock.

  • There are too many other devices or dongles connected to your PC that use a USB-C connection.

Notes: USB Type-C has a new feature called Alternate Modes which allows you to use non-USB connections with the USB-C cable and connection. There's no setting to turn on—your device automatically uses the appropriate mode if it's supported. Here are the display Alternate Modes that your cable may support:

  • DisplayPort

    The DisplayPort Alternate Mode lets you project video and play audio on an external display that supports DisplayPort.

  • MHL

    The MHL Alternate Mode lets you project video and play audio on an external display that supports MHL.

  • HDMI

    The HDMI Alternate Mode lets you project video and play audio on an external display that supports HDMI.

Use different USB port

This USB port doesn't support DisplayPort or Thunderbolt or MHL. Plug the USB device into a different USB port on your PC.

The USB device might have limited functionality when connected to this port. Plug the USB device into a different USB port on your PC.

Possible causes

  • Make sure the device or dongle is connected directly to your PC.

  • Make sure the device or dongle is connected to the USB-C port on your PC that supports the features of the device or dongle. For example, if you're connecting a Thunderbolt device, make sure it’s connected to the USB-C port on your PC that supports Thunderbolt.

  • The device or dongle isn't connected to the correct USB-C port on your PC.

  • The device or dongle is connected to your PC using an external hub or dock.

USB device might not be working properly

Your PC might not provide enough power to the USB device. Plug a power adapter into your USB device, or try to use a different PC.

Possible causes

  • If the USB device can be powered externally, plug it into an external power source.

  • Plug your PC into an external power source and don't run it on battery power.

  • Disconnect any unused USB devices that are connected to your PC.

  • Your PC can't power the device you connected to because that device isn't supported.

  • Your PC has a low battery, so it has temporarily limited the amount of power it can provide to the device.

  • Your PC is providing power to other devices, so it has temporarily limited the power it provides to the device you just connected to.

  • The device you connected to requires more power than the PC can provide.

Unsupported USB audio adapter

Connect a USB-C digital audio adapter instead.

Possible cause

If you have a USB-C analog audio adapter connected to your PC, unplug it, then connect a USB-C digital audio adapter instead.

Your PC doesn't support the audio adapter you connected to.

Note: There are two types of USB-C audio adapters: analog and digital. Most PCs only support USB-C digital audio adapters, which contain hardware that converts digital audio data from your PC to an analog signal that your headphones or speakers can play. USB-C digital audio adapters are often more expensive than analog audio adapters.

  • Make sure your Windows 10 phone has all the latest updates for Windows. To check for the latest updates, on Start , swipe over to the All apps list, and then select Settings > Update & security > Phone update > Check for updates.   • If your Windows 10 phone is already running the latest version of Windows 10 Mobile, try to connect your device to a Windows 10 PC instead.

  • Too many other Alternate Mode devices or dongles are connected to your PC (or phone).

Notes: 

  • USB Type-C has a new feature called Alternate Modes. If your USB-C cable has this feature, you can connect to non-USB devices that support the same Alternate Mode. For example, if your USB-C cable has the Thunderbolt Alternate Mode, you can connect to Thunderbolt devices. There's no setting to turn on—your device automatically uses the appropriate mode if it's supported. 

  • The Alternate Mode feature must be supported on the PC or phone's hardware and software, and the connected device or dongle. You might also need a specific USB-C cable.

Display connection might be limited

DisplayPort/MHL connection might not work. Try using a different cable.

  • The device or dongle you connected to has new features for USB-C that your PC (or phone) doesn’t support.

  • The device you connected to has new features for USB-C that the cable doesn’t support.

  • The device or dongle isn't connected to the correct USB-C port on your PC (or phone).

  • The device or dongle is connected to your PC (or phone) using an external hub or dock.

  • There are too many other devices or dongles connected to your PC (or phone) that use a USB-C connection.

  • If the USB device can be powered externally, plug it into an external power source.

  • Plug your PC (or phone) into an external power source and don't run it on battery power.

  • Disconnect any unused USB devices that are connected to your PC.

  • Your PC (or phone) can't power the device you connected to because that device isn't supported.

  • Your PC (or phone) has a low battery, so it has temporarily limited the amount of power it can provide to the device.

  • Your PC (or phone) is providing power to other devices, so it has temporarily limited the power it provides to the device you just connected to.

  • The device you connected to requires more power than the PC (or phone) can provide.

Unsupported USB audio adapter

Connect a USB-C digital audio adapter instead.

If you have a USB-C analog audio adapter connected to your PC, unplug it, then connect a USB-C digital audio adapter instead.

Your PC doesn't support the audio adapter you connected to.

Note: There are two types of USB-C audio adapters: analog and digital. Most PCs only support USB-C digital audio adapters, which contain hardware that converts digital audio data from your PC to an analog signal that your headphones or speakers can play. @nickslaught38 can you tell me which physical port you’re referring to on your UD-ULTC4K dock? Is it the HDMI port or one of the two DP ports? If DP, is it the top or bottom?

Was this port working before? Or is has never worked?

@santiagazo it sounds like you have our UD-ULTCDL which is a different model than what the original poster has. I recommend to start a separate thread about your issue or to contact us directly at [email protected] for further assistance.

In addition, not all systems with USB-C can support the HDMI port on the dock. This port requires the system to support USB-C VESA DisplayPort Alternate Mode video output which is an optional feature for USB-C. Another possibility is if you’re not using the USB-C cable that shipped with the dock. Not all C cables can support the aforementioned Alt Mode signal, so be sure to use the original cable.

Not working usb c display

A client has an HP Spectre 360 which has a single USB A and two USB C ports. According to what I've read at HP, the type C ports can be used for charging devices, data transfer and secondary displays. I've plugged two different known working displays in to the C ports using a DisplayPort adapter, and neither was detected by W10. Nor we're they detected by manually running Detect Displays in Display Properties.
Can anyone verify whether it should be possible to run a display from these ports, or offer a suggestion why they might not be detected? Both displays are currently used as secondary displays on other W10 laptops which have built in DisplayPorts.

Yeah, unfortunately you can get a USB cable that will work with a USB/DP port, but it still wont work on thunderbolt 3 port. Some days I -really- wish they hadn't re-used the same port for two very different connection technologies.

I know I've done it on a few other laptops for secondary monitors using a C to HDMI adapter, and it works every time.  I don't see why it shouldn't work for you.

We have several of these and all run multiple displays using the USB-C ports with a UBC-C to DVI or HDMI and they work without issue. I would maybe check for any firmware updates or updated drivers. Also make sure Windows is fully up to date as it is know for normal things not to work when there are pending updates waiting to be applied.

Had the same problem initially with several HP mobile devices (tablet and ProBooks). Had to update some drivers and install some other drivers. And went via HP Universal Dock then an activer display port to HDMI adapter as my display comes with HDMI and no display port. As far as I remember, I needed to update Intel Management Engine Interface and Intel Graphics drivers as well as to install DisplayPort driver to get this to work. The other drivers had nothing to do with secondary display, only with other components of the USB-C dock. And except for the Intel Graphics driver, the others weren't offered via HP update channels. And for that graphics driver, HP is usually 1-10 months late compared to unmodified driver directly by Intel.

Your USB-C to DisplayPort adapters may actually be Thunderbolt 3 to DisplayPort. Those won't work unless the ports on the laptop are specifically labelled as ThunderBolt (with a little Thunderbolt Icon probably).

The HDMI and DVI adapters the other respondents have mentioned are actually USB-C to HDMI (or DVI or Docking station).

So although USB-C and ThunderBolt 3 use the same connector, they don't use the same signalling protocol. Thunderbolt 3 adapters WON'T work in USB-C ports unless those ports are also marked as ThunderBolt 3.

USB-C ports that support DisplayPort video output directly will have the DPP logo beside them.

Thunderbolt 3 encapsulates DPP signal data by default.

Not all USB-C ports have video out, or as it is called in specs, USB-C DP Alt Mode. No DP Alt mode, no native video out. In that case, you would need something like a USB DisplayLink adapter. Do you have the Spectre model number so it can be verified?

The product literature for this model states USB Type CTM. I chatted with HP Support this morning and they confirmed the ports on the laptop are Thunderbolt and support external display. I suspect the issue is the cable. Unable to find a Thunderbolt adapter locally, going to have to order one.

A lot of devices would prefer the use of a docking station/hub for your display when using USB-C , i know Dell have a hub that uses usb-c from the laptop into the Hub, with the Hub then being the input for the displays and ethernet.

You need to install Thunderbolt management application and correctly configure Thunderbolt security in BIOS and both Thunderbolt device and USB devices authorization in Thunderbolt management application.


● Disable/uncheck in Windows "Turn on fast startup (recommended)"
You can do it via Control Panel, registry or GPO.

You must have administrator's rights for installing and changing Thunderbolt devices in Windows. You may need even elevated administrator's rights, which may depend on the security configuration in your organization.

I know this has been solved, but for reference I always use Star Tech adapters and so far they have never failed me.

The DisplayPort is an alternative monitor port to HDMI that users can connect with USB C to DisplayPort cables.

2. Check if the cable is loose

It might be the case that your USB C to DisplayPort cable is loose. So, make sure your connector cable is correctly plugged into the DisplayPort port and USB C slot.


3. Check the DisplayPort cable’s condition

When a no signal error arises on DisplayPort monitors, there might be an issue with your USB C to DisplayPort cable.

So, carefully check the overall condition of the cable. If the cable isn’t in entirely good condition, you might need a replacement one.


4. Unplug the PC and Monitor to reconnect them

  1. First, power off your PC.
  2. Unplug the PC’s mains plug.
  3. Then unplug the monitor the no signal issue arises on (and completely disconnect its USB C to DisplayPort cable).
  4. Wait for about five minutes.
  5. First, reconnect the monitor to the PC with the USB C to the DisplayPort cable.
  6. Plug the VDU back in.
  7. Plug your PC back in.
  8. Turn your PC on.

5. Adjust the refresh rate settings in Windows

  1. If you can do so, try adjusting the refresh rate settings in Windows by clicking Settings on the Start menu.
  2. Then click System and Display in Settings to open the tab directly below.

6. Check if your PC supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode

Not all PCs have USB C ports that support DisplayPort Alternate Mode. DP Alt Mode is a USB C feature that enables users to directly connect DisplayPort VDUs to their PCs.

So, have a look through your PC’s manual or webpage to check if its USB C slot supports DP Alt Mode. If your USB C slot doesn’t support DisplayPort Alternate Mode, you’ll need a USB C to DisplayPort adapter for monitors to resolve the no signal issue.

Those are some of the more likely fixes for resolving the USB C to DisplayPort no signal error.

If none of the above fixes resolve the error, there might be a hardware issue with the monitor. You might be able to return your VDU to its manufacturer for repairs if it’s still within its warranty period.

I am having this exact issue with connecting a Dell Precicion 5510 with a new Dell U2720Q monitor, over USB-C to USB-C.  I explicitly asked about this configuration when I purchased this monitor and was told it will work.  I've resorted to connecting via USB-C to DP.

One note here, is that with 4K screens, the HDMI 1.2 of the Precision 5510 only supports 4K @ 30 Hz, and this 30 Hz results in a really bad/laggy experience. This is the reason to go to USB-C to DP for the 4K @ 60 Hz support.

Also, yes, it would have been *really* nice to have a single USB-C to USB-C connection btwn 5510 and U2710Q, for both video and USB data, and supplement the power with the original 5510 130W power brick (as the U2720Q only supports 90W charging to laptop over the USB-C); this would be two cables to laptop (130W power and USB-C), but you'd now have a USB hub with the connected U2720Q, which is the config I was going after (makes for a much cleaner desk layout, if my periph's are connected to the display, instead of the laptop).

I still want to know why the heck the USB-C to USB-C doesn't work with a Dell U2720Q (or other Dell monitors), I mean, they are both Dells.  What a screw up. 

Anyway, this article gave me the info I needed to at least get the Display to render. Thanks for that!
