Need to replace an expired inspection sticker? Here's what to know as MVC continues reopening

Vehicle inspections and road tests have resumed at Motor Vehicle Agency locations throughout the state, bringing joy to teens but some questions for residents with expired inspections and licenses. Other agency functions are set to be available to the public starting next week. Here's what you can and cannot do as the reopening process continues.

What is opening Tuesday?

At agency locations deemed vehicle centers, customers will be able to handle registration/title transfers for private sales as well as new registrations/titles. They will also be able to salvage titles and handle license plate transactions.

The licensing center locations will be able to handle first-time licenses and permits, out of state transfers and expired commercial licenses. REAL ID will be available for those with scheduled appointments or if it is time for a standard license renewal.

What if my license/inspection expired during the closures?

The documents that were set to expire from March 31 to May 31 have been extended to July 31, those expiring in June are extended to Aug. 31 and those expiring in July until Sept. So you have until the end of this month to go to an MVC agency to renew licenses, permits, commercial registration, inspections and temporary tags that would have expired earlier this year.

Inspection stations are usually busiest on Monday afternoons and Friday mornings. Visit the wait queue cameras to see if there are backups at the inspection stations.

What if I had an appointment for a road test during the closure?

Motor Vehicle officials have said that residents with appointments that were canceled during the closure would receive information and a link to reschedule. If you should have received a letter but didn’t, contact MVC.

People with appointments, which started Monday, can proceed to a testing center but they will not be able to get a license, even if they pass the test, until the inside agency operations reopen Tuesday. Officials have said there will be an express lane for these customers.

Were there extensions for anything else?

There were extensions for commercial driver licenses and learner’s permits as well. Those now expire on Sept. 30 if they were set to expire after March 1. These are the same extensions issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

NJMVC now issues tickets?

I had a "senior moment" that is gonna cost me when I realized my inspection sticker said 04/11 ! Went immediately to Inspection Station in Newton. The inspector there said that because it was 30 days overdue, the State of NJ would be SENDING ME A TICKET!

I looked the possible ticket cost up on NJMVC site and it said it could be $$ fine w/ possible IMPRISONMENT!

Asked the inspector, "What if it was broke down this whole time?" His answer was, "Same penalty."

So beware

Slap - let us know if you need us to come and bail you out! ;-)

It would be different if I got pulled over and caught.

6 months is a LONG time over-due. I'd chalk this up to a lesson learned. I guess this is a new way of making revenue, just now they don't have to "catch you", it's a DIY

A friend of mine, over 10 years ago, got a ticket for expired inspection and never paid it. Forgot about it. One night 3 cop cars showed up and some of them went to front door of apt and the other to the back door, knocking and knocking and then when she didnt answer, went around looking in the kitchen window. She had her 5 year old in there who was scared because they were banging and banging and yelling for her to come out. They said (I witnessed the whole scene) "we know you are in there, so come out now". They knew because she shut a light off when they started banging on the door, cause she got scared. She came out and by that time her husband pulled in, thinking something was seriously wrong, and they talked with him and they left. All that for an inspection sticker ticket?? YES, so you need to be aware!!! They get crazy out here.

Thank you for this thread. have to make an appointment to take hubbie's truck for inspection.

That's just ridiculous. So even if your car is sat in the driveway not being used when you decide to use it again you have to get a ticket and possibly go to jail? They want you to pay for a car you aren't even using?

That is insane! I call it "sticker shock." Thanks for letting us now.

You're taking a vehicle on the road. It has to be inspected. If it sat for 8 months and is 6 months overdue on inspection, how do we know it's safe?

btownguy: I think they just test for emissions now? Am I right, anybody?

you go to court tell the judge that the car was being repaired by you and it was un drive able at the time of inspection due

now SlapTheCat

get us the ordance # number should you get ticket so we can start a letter to MVC saying this needs to be changed that no ticket be issued less veichel is sighted by police power of the pen

they check the hole emissinon system if you have a bad pipe of muffler it will fail

I asked the question even though I knew the answer. So how do they dare give anyone a $ ticket for missing an inspection which is no longer an inspection? It's ludicrous.

Maybe this thread should wait until a ticket is actually issued, if it is. Just because some schmo at the inspection station said this, doesn't mean it's the truth.

A person who is doing a job is a Schmo ? and you don't even know them ? WOW

Pay attention when you have your vehicle inspected, and you will see that they inspect

brakes, front end also. That is a fact in, Newton, Randolph and Washington.

The difference now is, a cop can give you a ticket as soon as you leave the inspection

station for non working lights, no directional signal, bald tires or anything else that is

unsafe. No more 30 day grace to get it fixed.

You have no right to put other lives in danger. It is you responsibility to maintain a safe vehicle.

NJMVC does not issue tickets for overdue inspections. the comment made by the inspector was incorrect! THE POLICE have authority to issue overdue tickets. The grace period is thirty days from the end of the month of which you were due. and not the month you decide to show up for inspection! As for safety inspections these are for commercial vehicles, taxi cabs, and limos, and ambulances! One year stickers are issued on these vehicles!

Actually THE MAN I was at Newton for inspection just a few weeks ago with a work vehicle and they ONLY do emissions testing. There is no equipment in there whatsoever. They have a computer at each end that's it.They do the emissions test and drive it right to the end for sticker without looking at anything.

I drove around in a work vehicle for over a year with overdue inspection sticker ( I only drive this vehicle during working hours so I felt it was my employers job to make sure it was legal) I was pulled over 2x no tickets. The first time I told the cop it was my employers car and he said to tell them the next time it would be impounded. The second time the cop let me go, but he really didn't care whose car it was and told me it was up to me to know if the car I am operating is legal or not.

So as it turns out I took it through inspection. They do not give you the 2yr. sticker. They give you the sticker that would have been given at the time due so i guess it will have to go back next year.

I did not know there is no longer a grace period if you fail.

JRT,

" Actually THE MAN I was at Newton for inspection just a few weeks ago with a work vehicle and they ONLY do emissions testing. "

Ya musta had your eyes closed Dude.

End of discussion.

No Dude I didn't! As a matter of fact I asked the guy what was going on? He said quote "We only check emissions, nothing else"
It took all of 3 min. I drove up he took my info. I got out and walked to the other end and by the time I was there he was driving the car to the end. Sticker applied. Done!

End of discussion.

According to the NJMVC websiteThey only check emissions and gas cap.

Heard commercial vehicles have different inspection then, say, regular cars. a few weeks ago were talking about it.

Some vehicles are inspected for Safety and Emmisions, but most are only Emissions

Vehicles required to be inspected annually for safety and emissions are listed blow:
• Taxis
• Limousines
• Jitneys
• All gasoline or bi-fueled-powered, commercial plated (x-plated) vehicles.
• Diesel-powered, commercial-plated (x-plated) vehicles with a GVWR of 9, pounds or less.
• Ambulances registered by the New Jersey Department of Health (DOH) (Frequency of inspection is determined by DOH).
• Buses issued passenger, governmental, no fee, or commercial vehicle license plates not subject to inspection by the Commercial Bus Inspection Unit or the School Bus Inspection Unit.

on topic
I doubt the inspector can issue a ticket.

why dont we just get rid of inspections totaly they got rid of the most emporant test any way the brake test lets press on the easy button and get rid of inspections totaly

If you are due for inspection and the car is being repaired, the mechanic can send your information to the DMV -or whatever its called now- and they get a fax back that you can carry in your car if you are stopped stating the car is being repaired and then you get a grace period. did that last year for my husbands truck but then realized it wasn't due until this year.

New Jersey Inspection Emission Repair

With a few exceptions, if you own a car in New Jersey, you must have it inspected every two years. If your car fails inspection, you must have it repaired and retested until it passes. We all hope our cars will pass all of the New Jersey state inspections with flying colors, but if yours doesn't, here is what you need to know.

A NJ state inspection checks for excessive emissions.

Can You Challenge the Results of a Failed Inspection?

In some cases, vehicle owners suspect their cars may not pass inspection. In other cases, a non-passing designation is a complete shock. If you encounter the latter, you may be entitled to ask for a referee inspection. Here are the two reasons the state may grant a re-test:

  • You question the testing protocol used at the state or private facility that conducted the test on your car.
  • Your vehicle failed one inspection, you had it repaired by a certified emissions repair facility and it fails again.

Referee inspections are conducted at facilities in Winslow, Westfield and Asbury Park. Requesting one will not extend the expiration date on your car’s existing sticker.

Challenge or Not, What to Do If Your Car Gets a Red Sticker

If your vehicle inspector does not stick a standard New Jersey inspection sticker on your windshield but slaps on a red sticker indicating it has not passed, it is time to contact a Sussex County auto repair shop that has been designated a registered New Jersey Emission Repair Facility. You also have the option to make needed emissions repairs yourself, but most motorists readily admit they lack the knowledge, tools and patience to attempt their own repairs. Once you find a provider you’re comfortable entrusting your vehicle with, make an appointment and bring your non-passing inspection report and emission repair form with you to your appointment.

You need to take New Jersey state inspections until you pass.

Why Undergo the NJ State Inspection Until You Pass?

If your vehicle fails a New Jersey Inspection once, you’ll probably consider it a nuisance. If your vehicle fails inspection twice or more, you may be tempted to forego future inspections and hope no police officers notice, pull you over and ticket you. While taking your vehicle in to be inspected and repaired costs a little and is a bit inconvenient, the process benefits the environment and your and your loved ones’ health. Altruism is a compelling reason to continue having your vehicle serviced until it passes inspection. A more compelling reason for many people? The penalties of noncompliance. If you drive a car with an expired inspection sticker, you could be fined $ to $ and put in prison for up to 30 days. If those consequences aren’t enough, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission could revoke your registration privileges entirely.

If you have your vehicle emissions-tested and it is flagged with a red sticker instead of an inspection sticker, contact us at DeBoer’s Auto Service and Sales. Not only do we provide a full array of auto service and repair in Hamburg, NJ, but we are a state-licensed private inspection facility. Call to schedule an appointment.

got pulled over the other day in englewood for an expired inspection i had no idea it had lapsed officer was nice enough to make a u-turn in traffic to pull me over and point that out to me here you go $ to the man cha-ching!

i got the inspection done shortly afterwards, but is there some way to dispute this or get the fine reduced? $ seems so excessive when a speeding ticket starts at $

doesn't the cop have to pull you over for a moving violation in order to cite you for an inspection violation? can i just submit my receipt of the inspection and send that in instead?

thanks for the replies

I got a ticket for that myself a couple years ago, also in July, and with a "checkpoint" area set up on a Parkway. It must be the time of year to do it. I thought mine was for more than $, but maybe I'm just not remembering the amount.

Obviously they're allowed to set up those "check your papers and stickers" roadblocks. It would probably do little good to try to dispute it. Just pay it and don't forget to get your inspection every two years. Personally, I wish they'd just do away with inspections like many other states have done.

Of course they can pull you over for the expired inspection as a primary offense. The month and year of the required inspection is right on your windshield and in front of your face everytime you get into the car. I would just pay the finethe fact that you got it inspected after you got the ticket is not going to make a bit of difference in the courts mind. Ignorance is not a defense.

$ isn't so bad when you consider what they can technically to hit you with for having an expired inspection sticker. My 66 year old mother got a $ fine and her car impounded, stranding her on the side of the road. That was a fun drive home after I picked her up. Heh.

There's got to be a special hell for officers who impound grandma's car. She should have been able to wash out his mouth with soap. Protect and serve doesn't seem to mean as much as *show me the money* these days.

!!! A couple of years ago I stood by the side of the road at a rural intersection cold, wet, shivering, waiting for a ride home from a car accident. The damned police let me stand there cold, wet, and shivering for almost two hours. I guess that I wasn't good enough to sit in a heated car as they were allowed to.
