Central Air Conditioning Buying Guide

Size
A synonym for the air conditioner’s cooling capacity, size is measured in British thermal units per hour (Btu/hr.) or in “tons.” One ton of cooling equals 12,000 Btu/hr.For sizing guidance, check the Energy Star website.

Efficiency
This describes how much cooling the unit delivers for each watt of electricity. Efficiency is expressed as the seasonal energy-efficiency rating, or SEER. The minimum SEER for a split system central air conditioner allowed today is 14, so look for units with SEER ratings of 15 or greater. The higher the SEER, the more you can lower your energy costs.

Maintenance
Central AC systems need regular maintenance for optimal performance. When you negotiate your installation, it's worth negotiating a service plan that combines regular inspections with discounts on repairs and a labor warranty into the overall price. Prices for such a service can vary widely.

Programmable thermostats
Setting your smart or programmable thermostat at the right temperature can reduce your cooling costs by about 10 percent. The right temperature varies on your comfort level, but start by setting it at 78° F and experiment until you find the sweet spot. You’ll save about 3 percent on your utility bill for every degree you raise the set temperature for your central air, according to the Department of Energy. And keep in mind that using a box or ceiling fan, which costs little to run, can make you feel 3° F to 4° F cooler.

Upgrading an existing system
If you’re upgrading your central air, don’t assume you should buy the same-sized system. Any changes you’ve made to improve your home’s energy efficiency, such as upgrading your windows or adding insulation, can reduce your cooling needs. On the other hand, if you’ve added rooms, you might need more cooling.

Have your contractor do a load calculation based on a recognized method, such as one in Manual J from the ACCA. The contractor’s evaluation should include whether your ducts need to be resized, sealed, and insulated, or replaced. Remember that an indoor evaporator coil and outdoor condenser must be a matched set from the same brand, or the performance, efficiency, and capacity might not meet expectations.

New systems are 20 to 40 percent more efficient than minimum-efficiency models made even 10 years ago. Costs will vary and can depend on whether you need ductwork installed, and the particular size and configuration of your home.

Bryant Reviews

Update by user Jun 30, 2020

The supplier has fixed the issue and I have paid 982 dollars.

Original review posted by user Jun 28, 2020

I am highly concerned with Bryant air conditioning I have. I have 3 Bryant air conditioning systems, and they are fairly new (2 and 1/2 years old). Recently one of the Bryant air conditioning systems went down and I ended up paying 982 dollars. This is extremely painful, and I am having no confidence on the systems I have. Though I have 5 years of warranty, I ended up paying a big amount. These systems are supposed to be stable but looks like there is nexus between manufacture and dealer/distributor to make customers pay the money for faulty devices. When I asked the dealer/ distributor Reliant about the issue, they told me its manufacturing defect but not covered by warranty. This is not acceptable and I want this to be addressed asap otherwise I am going to raise my concerns in consumer forums.

👌 Best Bryant Heat Pumps Reviews Buyer’s Guide: The Complete Round-Up - HVAC Training 101

Bryant Air Conditioners

All Bryant AC units run on electricity. They are also split-system air conditioners, meaning part of the unit goes inside your home, while the other part goes outside. Both of these parts connect to the ductwork inside your home, which provides pathways for fresh air to circulate.

Bryant air conditioner series and models

The company offers three series of air conditioners — Legacy, Preferred, and Evolution. Each series has various models with different features. When you’re shopping for an air conditioner, there are several factors to consider to ensure you get the right one for your needs.

One of the most important features to consider when looking for a new air conditioner is efficiency. The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating indicates an AC unit’s energy efficiency. Typically, efficiency goes up with the cost of the unit, so you may spend more upfront but save money on energy bills in the long run. The lowest SEER rating on modern air conditioners is 13 and the highest is 23. However, certain hot regions of the United States require a SEER of 14 or more.

Legacy Series – 113A Model

The Legacy Series contains Bryant’s most affordable models, and they all operate on single-stage compressors. The 113A model is the least expensive but also has the lowest SEER rating at 13, which won’t meet the minimum requirements in some parts of the United States. These units weigh between 1.5 and 5 tons and measure 23.13  x 23.13 x 25.31 inches.

Legacy Series – 106A Model

This unit has a SEER rating of 16. You can control Legacy Series units using the Côr 7C or 5C Thermostat, which is a smart thermostat that allows for remote access and monitoring. The unit weighs between 1.5 and 5 tons and measures between 25 3/4 x 25 5/16 inches and 35 x 45 11/16 inches.

Preferred Series – 127A Model

In the Preferred Series, you can choose between single-stage and two-stage operations. However, only the highest tier of Preferred units – the 127A – has a two-speed motor. The 127A has a 17 SEER rating. To control the Preferred Series air conditioners, you can add on the Housewise Wi-Fi Thermostat, which allows for wireless operation and energy tracking.

The 127A model measures between 31 3/16 x 35 1/2 inches and 35 x 38 7/8 inches and weighs between 2 and 5 tons.

Evolution Series – 186B Model

The Evolution Series features six models, including the 186B, which weighs between 1.5 and 5 tons and has a SEER rating up to 16. The single-stage unit operates between 18,000 and 60,000 BTUh and measures between 31 3/16 x 28 11/16 inches and 35 x 47 3/16 inches.

Evolution Series – 180C Model

Units get much quieter when you opt for variable-speed air conditioners like the 180C. This model has a SEER rating of up to 20.5 and a decibel level of 58, which is a bit quieter than conversational speech.

Evolution Series models also come with Evolution Connex Control System. This system allows you to use the MyEvolution app to operate your air conditioner. Additionally, Evolution Series models work with the AeroQuiet System II, making for a quieter operation. This model measures 35 x 43 13/16 inches.

Bryant air conditioner pricing

The cost of a Bryant air conditioner depends on the size. The smallest 1.5-ton AC unit costs around $1,200 for the unit and $2,300 for installation. For a 3-ton system, you’ll pay about $1,600 for the unit and $2,882 for installation. The 5-ton AC costs around $2,500 for the unit and $3,800 for installation.

Other factors, such as the difficulty of the installation, the efficiency of the air conditioner, and the size of your home, can affect the price. Call a local HVAC professional for a more accurate estimate.

Care and maintenance

Bryant offers routine maintenance advice for homeowners looking to keep their air conditioner in top condition. First, keep the filter clean since a clogged filter will shorten the life of the machine. You should also be sure not to cover your outdoor unit; it needs unrestricted airflow for optimal performance.

Periodically check the condensate drain for any blockages and clean the coil on your indoor unit. Schedule twice-yearly maintenance calls with your local HVAC professional so they can diagnose and fix any small problems before they worsen.

Bryant air conditioner warranties

Bryant offers a 10-year limited warranty on the compressor and parts upon registration. To get this warranty, you must register within 90 days, or your warranty will decrease to five years. Ask your technician for possible extended warranties on things like labor.

Reports bryant consumer ac reviews

Most Reliable Central Air Conditioning Systems

Over the past months, with folks working and studying at home, homeowners began to appreciate their central air conditioning systems more than ever.

In fact, 14 percent of the members we surveyed about their AC systems said they used theirs much more than they had the previous summer and well over 80 percent said they used theirs just as much or slightly more. Of these, 15 percent had purchased a central AC system for the first time.

Installing or replacing a central air conditioning system is one of a homeowner’s biggest expenses, so you’ll want to get it right. Because there are so many variables, including a home’s size and design, how the system is installed, and construction of the ductwork, Consumer Reports doesn’t test central air conditioning systems. Instead, we estimate the reliability of major brands on the market by asking our members about their experiences with the central AC systems they have purchased and had installed.

In our latest central air conditioning survey, our members told us about the 23,997 central air conditioning systems they had installed between 2005 and 2020. They let us know which parts break and what it cost to fix their central AC if repairs were needed. We also asked them how likely they are to recommend their system to friends and family, and use their responses to calculate owner satisfaction ratings.

“Choosing a brand with higher predicted reliability and better owner satisfaction will boost your chances of getting an air conditioning system that you can depend on,” says Simon Slater, associate director of survey research for Consumer Reports.

Members expect their central air systems to last for a median of 15 years. Our findings are based on central air conditioning systems that are used a median of five months a year. Here are the details.

Using the information provided by our members, we calculated ratings for both predicted reliability and owner satisfaction. Of the 21 brands captured in our survey only one, Trane, earned an Excellent mark on both measures.

To calculate predicted reliability, we used our survey data to estimate how likely a system is to break or cease to sufficiently cool a home by the end of the eighth year. In addition to Trane, Armstrong and Ducane earned an Excellent reliability rating. Seven other brands earned a favorable rating of Very Good; and seven brands earned a rating of Good, which is just average.

In this survey, no brand earned a Poor reliability rating, but Coleman, Goodman, Luxaire, and York received a subpar Fair rating. People should take this into account if they’re considering buying a central AC system from one of these brands.

Our owner satisfaction rating is based on the percentage of members who say they’re extremely likely to recommend their central air brand. Five brands got a top rating of Excellent for satisfaction, including Trane, American Standard, Bryant, Lennox, and Carrier. Armstrong and Ducane earned Very Good satisfaction ratings, as did Rheem and Ruud. The other 12 brands earned a rating of Good (average) for owner satisfaction. (None received a Fair or Poor rating.)

So what breaks most often? According to our survey, the evaporator coil, which resides in the indoor unit, is the part most likely to break, affecting 5 percent of owners, on average. The three brands affiliated with Johnson Controls (Coleman, Luxaire, and York) stand out for having evaporator coils that are comparatively more problematic, with a problem rate of 10 percent.

Next are problems with condenser coils (outdoors), followed by blowers, compressors, and controls (excluding the thermostat). Issues with fans and valves were reported in fewer numbers.

Of the central AC systems covered in our survey, we predict that 36 percent will break or experience problems by the end of the eighth year of ownership. In our 2018 survey the median cost of a repair was $250 when paid completely out of pocket, vs. a median of $5,700 to get a new system installed (a figure confirmed in our 2020 survey). However, our 2018 survey also showed that less than half of the repair work was paid out of pocket—among our members, repairs are usually covered by a warranty or a service contract.

Manufacturers of central air conditioning systems recommend that owners have them serviced by a professional at least once a year, and 56 percent of our members do. Numbers drop dramatically after that, with 21 percent having their system serviced every two or three years, 8 percent reporting less than every three years, and 15 percent reporting that they never had routine maintenance.

We dug deeper into what our members consider when they say they are extremely likely to recommend their central AC systems to friends and family. How quietly it runs is first on the list, followed by how quickly the AC cools and how reliable it is. Comfort level, ease of use, and cooling evenly also contribute to satisfaction but not as heavily.

At the brand level, we found that Trane stands out for quietness, quick and even cooling, and comfort. Members also gave props to American Standard for even cooling. But owners of Payne systems weren’t particularly impressed, saying they were too noisy and failed to provide the level of comfort they expected.

The next AC: Owners of central air systems are very unlikely to switch to another type of air conditioning if their current system needs to be replaced. When we asked our members to rate the importance of certain features when considering the next system they’ll buy, well over half, 56 percent, said a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty was very important. More than 40 percent would especially like a new system that is more energy-efficient than the one they have now. Price was near the bottom of the list of important features, with only 9 percent looking for a system that costs less than the one they have now.

Brand loyalty: Only 15 percent of our members said that buying an AC system of the same brand is very important to them, but 25 percent of Trane owners indicated that it was key for them. Owners of American Standard systems are also more likely to be brand loyal than most others. Owners of systems from Heil appear to be the least.

Even if you buy the most reliable air conditioning system, it can let you down if you don’t tend to some regular maintenance. Some tasks require a professional, but others you can do yourself.

Keeping it clean: Be sure hedges and plants are at least 2 feet away from the outside unit. Clean grills and filters monthly. Clear debris and dirt from condenser coils, and check for blockages in the drain pipe.

Sealing and insulating ducts: Up to 30 to 40 percent of energy can escape through air leaks or when ducts aren’t insulated. Sealing them will keep you cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Seasonal checks: Once a year, have a licensed professional change all filters, clean and flush the coils, drain the pan and drainage system, and vacuum the blower compartments. The contractor should also check that the system is properly charged with refrigerant, that there are no leaks, and that all mechanical components are working properly.

Source: Results are based on Consumer Reports’ 2018 and 2020 Summer surveys of owners of 23,997 conventional central air conditioning systems. Our statistical model estimates breakage rates (a system breaks down or ceases to sufficiently cool a home) by the end of the eighth year of ownership for systems that are not covered by an extended warranty or service contract. We also adjust for the number of months the system is used over a 12-month period. The median number of months during which these systems are used among our members is five per year.

About Bryant – Are Bryant and Carrier the Same?

Bryant is owned by Carrier – and Carrier is owned by United Technologies Corp. Known as UTC, the company also produces Heil, Day & Night, Payne and several other brands. The residential HVAC industry has consolidated to the point there are only 7 or 8 players. Together, they make close to 30 brands, or 30 pieces of residential AC pie. UTC owns 8 pieces of the pie.

Did you know?

Bryant and Carrier air conditioner models are the same equipment with a different cabinet and name badge and a price difference of 5% to 10%.

Bryant is the more affordable brand. UTC takes this approach to give consumers perceived options and to garner a larger total market share. Local dealers are prohibited from carrying both brands.

Pro Tip: Experience Counts

Should you automatically choose Bryant over Carrier? No, because the quality of installation is so important. Our recommendation is to get estimates on both brands and choose the installer you think will do the best job based on experience and customer reviews. We’d rather spend 10% more and get an AC installed properly. But then again, the Bryant dealer might be just as experienced or more so, and then take the savings!

There’s more below about who to select to install a Bryant AC including a discussion of Bryant Factory Authorized Dealers and dealers with NATE-certified technicians.

Bryant ACs – What’s Available?

The diverse lineup includes single-stage, two-stage, variable capacity and newer, unique 5-stage models.

See Energy Management for details on single-stage and staged AC options and how they affect efficiency and climate control.

WiFi controls, communicating technology and a complete range of accessory equipment such as air cleaners, ventilators and moisture control components are available. Be aware of the equipment accessories – because any Bryant HVAC salesperson will at least mention these upgrades, though most won’t be pushy.

Bryant Air Conditioner Pros & Cons

There is plenty to like from this premium brand. Bryant typically places in the top 10 among brands in consumer satisfaction and durability.

However, there are a few disadvantages, and those are discussed too. Here’s an overview table before getting into details.

Bryant AC Pros & Unique Features

Bryant breaks it down in to 4 categories. In fact, we like the way Bryant organizes it so well, we’ve used the template for other brands.

1. Energy Management

Homeowners are demanding better efficiency as a means of reducing energy use and cost. It’s good for the environment and for the wallet.

Bryant still makes entry-level units too. The table above shows all models.

The unit’s compressor is the most significant component determining efficiency. It affects indoor temperature balance and dehumidification, and those issues are discussed later in this Bryant AC review and price guide.

Here are Bryant compressor options from lowest to highest performance.

  • Single-stage: Bryant makes 11 models with single-stage compressors – 100% capacity whenever running. Equipment cost is low, operating costs are higher, because efficiency is poor, especially in the entry-level models.
  • 2-stage: 4 models are built with 2-stage compressors. The stages are 65% and 100% capacity. The purpose is to run at the lower stage whenever possible to be more energy efficient. Unless the outside temperatures climb quickly or you turn down the thermostat by several degrees, the unit should keep up with cooling on the low stage. There’s an impact on humidity too, described below.
  • 5-stage: The 180BNV has five capacity levels starting at 25% then about 40/60/75/100%. We first noticed the 5-stage design with Heil, and at this point it is unique to UTC brands. The lower capacity an AC runs at while maintaining the temperature you want, the more efficient it is. There are lower-capacity options with this unit than single-stage and two-stage models.
  • Variable capacity: Aka variable speed, the 180C is called the Bryant Evolution Extreme. It has an inverter-driven compressor that functions like cruise control. The compressor can run at almost any capacity from 25% and up, and it will modulate in increments of less than 1% to keep the temperature right where you want it. Little energy is wasted, and the efficiency is Bryant’s best.

2. Comfort Management

The compressor is also key to indoor climate control and comfort such as temperature balance and humidity control.

Compressors: As with efficiency, single-stage compressors offer the least control over the indoor environment. AC cycles are shorter and “full blast,” and then the unit shuts off. This causes slight temperature swings, which might be noticeable, and less dehumidification.

Two-stage models are better, but not as good as the 5-stageAC.

Neither can match the climate control of the variable speed unit. Inverter-type compressors use long, low-speed cycles when possible to produce the best temperature balance. And they keep air moving nearly continuously over the indoor coil, where moisture from the air is condensed out of the air in your home and drained away. In summer, drier air is more comfortable.

Blower fans: Another aspect of comfort control is the blower motor in your furnace or air handler. You’ll get the best comfort management with a variable-speed blower. It will match the speed or stage of the compressor, working with it to maintain temperature balance and maximize dehumidification.

Bryant thermostat options: It is the thermostat that controls the functionality of the system.

bryant ac thermostat

The Evolution Connex thermostat is the top of the line. It is a full-color, LCD touchscreen thermostat in black or white.

Connex and Housewise thermostats control all system components – AC or heat pump, furnace or air handler, humidifier or dehumidifier, air purifier and ventilator.

What about WiFi? As we’ve seen in the table above, there are three series or tiers of Bryant ACs. And there is a WiFi thermostat for each.

The Evolution Connex, Preferred Series Housewise and some Côr thermostats for the Legacy Line have WiFi. Using WiFi with the app and a smartphone helps comfort control and saves money.

While programming a thermostat is great when you’re home and want the house at a specific temperature when you get up, when away, WiFi is a better option.

Let’s say you typically get home at 6pm, so the thermostat is programmed to start boosting cooling at 5:15, lowering the indoor temperature from money-saving 80F when nobody is home to a cooler 74F when you arrive. Well, if you decide to go out with friends for dinner and won’t be home until 8 or 9, use the app to reprogram the thermostat to keep the house at 80F while out and use it again to lower the thermostat setting a while before you expect to get home.

Do you have to use a Bryant thermostat? If you want to use Bryant’s communicating technology on an Evolution AC, then yes you do. The Connex is the only communicating model. In standard systems, the thermostat controls each component without feedback. In a communicating system, the AC sends temperature and humidity control data back to the thermostat. The result is more precise comfort control.

Pro Tip:Be cautious about communicating technology. On Evolution and some Preferred Series models, communicating technology is an option. We’re not sold on it and have written more about it here.

The user comments at the bottom of the page are worth reading too. For example, a reader named Jason shared this view:

“I have a Bryant Evolution which I hate. I replaced the main thermostat with an Emerson Sensi and planned to do the same upstairs until I found out it was an ABCD communicating thermostat. So now I’m trying to figure out how to replace the upstairs thermostat and lose the ‘communicating’ nonsense once and for all. No clue how to do this.”

Communicating technology is expensive. It’s value is modest – you likely would not notice any climate control improvement using a variable capacity or two-stage AC with a communicating thermostat compared with a non-communicating thermostat.

And the technology can be quirky, as Jason and others have discovered. If there are communication issues, the system might not work. Salespeople love the commission on communicating equipment and thermostats. Repair people are not so happy with it when they have to figure out what is wrong with the system and how to get the units “talking” again.

Final word on thermostats: Other than when a communicating system is installed, you can use any thermostat you want. Just make sure it is wired to handle the system type you have, for example two-stage cooling.

3. Humidity Management

It’s not just the heat – it is also the humidity, right?

Perfect Humidity technology is available for Evolution and Preferred Series with more than one stage of air conditioning. It uses multi-stage ACs and variable speed blower fans to maximize dehumidifying.

Even when the AC cycle is over and the outdoor unit shuts down, the fan will continue to run – continue to pull humid air over the still-cold indoor coil to condense additional moisture out of the air.

If you live in AZ or other dry area, this won’t make much difference. But in the muggy South and Southeast, it is well worth considering.

Regardless of the thermostat, a 2-stage or variable capacity AC will always remove more humidity than a single-stage model.

4. Sound Management

The best way to reduce AC sound is to buy a 2-stage or variable speed Bryant air conditioner. It will run at a lower speed most of the time, and of course, that’s quieter than 100% capacity.

Bryant also uses what it calls the AeroQuiet System II in Evolution models. The fan design is quieter. The energy efficient ECM (vs PSC) motor is quieter. And the compressor is better insulated for sound than in lower-tier models.

5. Other Bryant Air Conditioner Pros

There are two other benefits to note that don’t fall into the categories above.

  • Coastal models – the 187BNC 2-stage AC and 114CNC single-stage unit have a baked-on powder paint finish coated in epoxy (Bryant calls it TuffCoat). All metal parts are painted on all sides. However, the warranty in coastal applications is just 5 years.
  • Compact model – If space in your yard is limited, the 16 SEER, single-stage Preferred Compact 124ANS AC is worth a look. In fact, it looks something like a mini split AC. It’s less than half as deep as a standard condensing unit and about as wide.

Cons – Problems with Bryant ACs

As one of the better brands, there are no glaring problems, though we’ve mentioned concerns with the Evolution communicating system.

The 13 and 14 SEER models are inefficient. If you live in a cool climate, they are a good choice. You’ll pay high cooling costs in warm-to-hot climates.

The 116B 16 SEER model is an affordable single-stage AC, but it is loud. If your AC is installed near a deck or patio that’s often used while the air conditioning is running, you’ll appreciate a quieter AC.

Legacy Series warranties – 5 years or 10? Bryant’s site shows 10-year warranties on the Legacy Series. But we’ve heard from contractors that they are 5-year warranties. We haven’t heard back from Bryant, but will update this when we do. For now, ask about the warranty if you’re considering a Bryant Legacy Series AC.

Bryant Air Conditioner Prices

The AC Unit Cost Range is for the contractor cost for the condensing unit, indoor coil and refrigerant line set plus profit.

The Total Cost Range includes installation but no changes to the ductwork. Local rates might be slightly outside these ranges due to variables such as labor cost, taxes and local competition among dealers. This is one reason it is a good idea to get several estimates from dealers that know they are competing for your business.

Bryant Air Conditioner Prices By Size

Properly sizing an air conditioning system – the condensing unit, indoor coil and blower (if that’s being changed too), is one of the most critical steps in optimizing efficiency and indoor comfort. Models start either at 1.5 or 2.0 tons and range to 5.0 tons.

Your dealer should complete a Manual J Load Calculation to determine the size equipment you need. It factors house size and layout, number and type of windows, insulation value, your climate and much more. If you’ve upgraded your windows, doors or insulation or have Energy Star roofing, then your new AC might be smaller than the old one.

Bryant Warranties

Warranties are a new arena of competition among brands, and that is good for consumers.

Bryant’s warranties are average, at best. Goodman, Amana, Heil and American Standard are among brands with better warranties.

All Bryant models show 10-year parts warranties. As noted, be sure to check on Legacy AC warranties if you’re considering a model in that series. Some claim the warranties are still 5 years.

Labor warranties are getting longer.

The Evolution Extreme 180C is backed with a 3-year labor warranty

Pro Tip: Be sure to register your Bryant warranty within 90 days of installation. If you don’t, it becomes a 5-year parts warranty regardless of the model. This is true with all brands. California and a few other states don’t allow companies to get away with reducing the warranty if the product isn’t registered in a timely fashion.

Who Installs Bryant?

This is an important consideration because the quality of the installation will impact efficiency, performance and durability. The quality of the installation is widely regarded to be as important as the quality of the air conditioner.

With Bryant, you have two options:

  • Bryant Factory Authorized Dealers are local installers that have gone through a Bryant training program to ensure they are competent and that they understand the specifics of installing Bryant equipment.
  • Other local dealers that have not been through Bryant’s program – though they might have been through a similar program from another brand and/or be certified by NATE, the North American Technician Excellence program. Many Bryant Authorized Dealers have NATE certification too.

bryant authorized installation

About 1/3 or less of Bryant dealers are Factory Authorized. For example, in the 60120 Elgin, IL list, 17 of the 49 dealers are authorized – 35%.

In 75217, one of several Dallas, TX zip codes, just 2 or 11 local Bryant dealers are authorized.

By comparison, 4 of the 11 Dallas companies use NATE-certified installers, the 2 authorized dealers and 2 others.

Getting a Good AC Properly Installed

The bottom line is that you might be safest choosing a Factory Authorized Dealer, but there are quality installers that haven’t gone through the Bryant program.

Those certifications are important – but also look at reviews of the companies you are considering and compare costs. Find out how long the crew that will install your AC has been on the job.

Choose a balance of experience and cost, if possible. If not, go with the installer with the most proven track record of quality installation and outstanding customer service.

Decided to replace both zones of our existing 10 SEER Rheem AC’s and 92% Efficiency Ruud Furnaces. I wasn’t in a breakdown, so I had time to shop and do tons of research. If you can preemptively decide to replace, I highly recommend as it gives you the leverage!
I received bids on Lennox, Luxaire (York), Coleman, American Standard and Bryant. Went with Bryant Evolution because the install company was thorough, straight forward and actually required doing an independent manual J calculation (at their cost) before finalizing the bid. Also, they were able to offer 0% financing for 60 months (had to apply for Bryant credit card through Wells Fargo).

Once the financing was secured, I opted to go into the higher end units because I wanted the best with all the features. Bryant Evolution 180CNV, 3 ton downstairs and 2 ton upstairs, wanted the best comfort through humidity reduction so modulating was a key feature. The furnaces were both 80k 987MA Bryant Evolution units. I didn’t really get a chance to use them before it became AC season, so no initial thoughts.

If I hadn’t been diligent and shopped hard, I would have ended up paying $3,000 more for Lennox units with only dual stage AC and Heat plus less efficiency overall.

After living for 18 years in the same house there are some replacements that you just have to make. A new AC unit was such a replacement for me. The old Carrier kept on breaking down and costing us money to fix so we decided not to fix it anymore when it broke down last summer. This new Bryant AC is an excellent replacement though. It’s so quiet and hasn’t broken down once since we got it 4 months ago. Everything is just as the dealer said it would be, you don’t find that too often nowadays. Thank you, Bryant.

When I bought this I had read rave reviews about Bryant and thought I’d go for it since I found a 3 ton that was just right for my budget. Now I wish I had spent more on something better. The Freon keeps leaking and the refills are exasperating as they are costly.

Warranty | Bryant Air Conditioners Reviews

Any HVAC warranty is different than the warranties you would expect, such as a car warranty. It is standard in the HVAC industry to offer a parts-only warranty. That means you pay for labor if something goes wrong. It is a huge factor in purchase considerations that a manufacturer stands behind their product. However, verification of product quality is done at the factory. Product installation is a different story.

Furthermore, a bad installation will give you a lemon. A bad installation can result in a lower efficiency rating than what is on the product label. Additionally, a bad installation will also cause the unit to break down more often and lessen the life of the equipment.

Therefore, manufacturers have to rely on the contractor to do things correctly. A reputable contractor will have trained and skilled staff for this work. They will also offer a warranty for workmanship above the manufacturer’s warranty. Getting a reputable contractor for the installation is crucial.

Bryant Air Conditioner Buyer’s Guide

As mentioned above, getting a reputable contractor is crucial. It can make all the difference in the world for your comfort and happiness in buying a branded product such as a gas furnace. In that regard, we have written a buyer’s guide to help you navigate this process. Here are a few excerpts from our buyer’s guide tips:

  1. Always get at least three bids from reliable contractors. How do you find a good reliable HVAC contractor?
  2. Ensure the contractor does a load calculation for air conditioning and heating sizing. That is crucial.
  3. If the size of your HVAC system changes from the old to the new system (based on the load calculation) then, likely, the ductwork will also change in size.

For more tips see our HVAC Consumer Buyer’s Guide.

Air Conditioner Staging

After looking at the Bryant Model Comparison Chart above, you may be wondering what the difference in staging is? Does it make it more efficient? What is the difference between a modulating air conditioner and a two-stage air conditioner? Why would I want to pay more for a modulating air conditioner over an air conditioner that is two-stage when they have the same efficiency levels? The difference is in comfort. A modulating air conditioner will have less temperature swing over a single-stage or two-stage air conditioner. Of course, the chart refers to furnaces, but the temperature swing works the same with air conditioners.
