Lexus NX Expert Review

Alex Leanse

Can't distinguish one softly styled luxury compact SUV from another? Check out the Lexus NX. This crossover made its debut for , wearing angular bodywork over a platform shared with the Toyota RAV4. It also featured the brand's first turbocharged engine. Besides its eye-catching looks, the NX offers proven Lexus reliability and an available hybrid drivetrain. It slots between the family-oriented RX and subcompact UX in Lexus' crossover lineup.

The Lexus NXh is a IntelliChoice Best Overall Value winner.

Curious about the second-generation model? Check out the Lexus NX.

  • Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are now standard
  • Power-folding, auto-dimming side mirrors are included on all trims
  • Green paint option becomes available
  • Power-operated tailgate with kick activation is now a standalone option
  • Steering wheel horn pad gets redesigned
  • Black Line Special Edition offered for NX h F Sport

One thing's for sure: The Lexus NX looks like no other luxury compact SUV. Even beyond its styling, the NX is distinctive, but not always in good ways.

Driving manners are less aggressive than the design might suggest. The NX generally feels heavy, underpowered, and not very sporty. Turn-in is crisp but accompanied by plenty of body roll. At the same time, ride quality is smooth and quiet. At least the NX h hybrid model is efficient, though for those not set on a luxury-badged vehicle, the new Toyota Venza hybrid is more efficient and feels premium in its highest trim.

Inside, the NX's cabin is nicely appointed and feels more expensive than its price suggests. However, Lexus' frustrating infotainment system still uses a distracting touchpad instead of a conventional touchscreen. Passenger space is good, although the actual seating position can feel awkward. Cargo capacity isn't as large as some competitors.

Eye-catching looks, a plush ride, and good fuel economy give the NX appeal. For a sporty drive or a more spacious interior, choose one of its competitors. Or wait until the next-generation NX arrives.

The NX is powered by a liter turbo-four producing hp and lb-ft of torque. It's connected to a six-speed automatic transmission that drives the front wheels as standard or AWD optionally. In MotorTrend testing, a FWD NX posted a mph time of seconds. EPA-rated fuel economy is 22/28 mpg city/highway for FWD and AWD models, but efficiency is reduced to 22/27 mpg in F Sport trim.

For greater efficiency, Lexus offers the NX h hybrid. It uses a liter I-4 and CVT automatic plus three electric motors to provide hybrid AWD. Total power output is hp, and mph acceleration measured seconds in MotorTrend testing. EPA-rated fuel economy is 33/30 mpg.

From the NHTSA, the NX gets a five-star overall safety rating, the highest possible score. From the IIHS, the NX earned a Top Safety Pick + designation, which earns the top Good score in all six crashworthiness tests.

Standard driver-assist and active safety features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, road sign recognition, and automatic high-beams. Previously optional blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking become standard equipment for

In the NX , cargo space measures cubic feet behind the second-row seats, or cubic feet with those seats folded down. The battery pack in the NX h reduces cargo space slightly, to and cubic feet, respectively.

In all NX models, front-row headroom measures inches, which compares to inches in the Acura RDX. Second-row headroom is inches, similar to the inches in the RDX. Front-row legroom is inches in the Lexus, a bit more than inches in the Acura. Second-row legroom is inches in the NX, behind the RDX's inches.

The NX is equipped with an inch infotainment display, which includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and Bluetooth connectivity. An available inch display adds built-in navigation. Two front-row USB ports are included. An eight-speaker audio system is standard, and a speaker Mark Levinson premium setup is available.

We've had issues with the touchpad-controlled infotainment Lexus implements across its model range, but thankfully, the next-gen NX goes without.

Lexus NX Cargo Space

The Lexus NX features a total cargo space of cubic feet with cubic feet of trunk space behind the rear seat.

This is an ample amount of cargo room, exactly what you’ll need when you’re busy and on the go in the Peabody and Danvers areas. In addition to its volume, the Lexus NX cargo space has a lot to offer drivers in the North Andover, MA, area.

For example, it’s easily accessible and highly versatile. It’s also part of an already comfortable cabin with a generous amount of headroom and legroom for the driver and passengers. Plus, when you’re all done loading the luggage for your next road trip, you can get the tunes pumping through the high-tech infotainment system.

To showcase it all—and then some—the team at Ira Lexus of Danvers put together a tour of the cargo area of this luxury SUV in this Lexus NX cargo space guide. Keep reading to learn more!

Explore the Lexus NX Cargo Space

The Lexus NX seats a total of five passengers with two captain’s chairs up front and a bench seat in the second row. The rear seats have an optional power-reclining feature, allowing passengers to lean back and get comfortable during long car rides.

If all five seats are filled, you’ll still have more than 17 cubic feet of trunk space to load up with luggage and other essentials.

Need even more room for suitcases, golf clubs, or building materials? Take advantage of the power-folding feature and fold the rear seats forward with the push of a button. Folding them completely will give you access to the entire cubic feet of cargo space.

For added convenience, the rear seats also have a 60/40 split-folding feature that allows you to achieve the ideal balance between passenger and luggage space.

Lexus NX Cargo Space: Accessibility and Convenience Features

You’ll likely find the Lexus NX cargo space is easy to load and unload thanks to an available Power Rear Door with Kick Sensor. If your hands are full, simply wave your foot under the rear bumper to open the liftgate. This feature saves you from having to put down what you’re holding to lift the hatch.

When you’re all done loading, you can easily close the liftgate by pushing a button on the side of the cargo area instead of reaching up and pulling down the hatch manually.

You can also make use of the roof rails to help you transport items that don’t quite fit in the trunk.

This is a great place to load up mountain bikes and kayaks. Even better, while these roof rails offer all the capability you’d expect from this kind of feature, they also have a sleek, body-colored design that blends in when not in use.

A Comfortable Ride for All: Lexus NX

  • Headroom (front/rear): /38 inches
  • Legroom (front/rear): / inches
  • Shoulder room (front/rear): / inches
  • Hip room (front/rear): / inches

If you want the cabin to appear even more spacious, you can add the available moonroof and flood the cabin with natural light. This expansive feature has a large opening, so you can breathe in fresh air. It also has an outer sliding design that doesn’t take away much from your headroom dimensions.

With way power-adjustable front seats, you can find the ideal position for comfort and visibility as you settle in for the long haul.

You’ll also have available heated and ventilated seats to help you warm up during those frigid New England winters and cool down when the summer humidity sets in. Not only that, but a heated steering wheel is available as well to help you warm up after clearing snow off your car.

Road-Trip Ready Infotainment System in the Lexus NX

Once you’ve loaded up the cargo space for your next weekend getaway, it’s important to make sure your road trip playlist is lined up and ready to go. You’ll be able to play your music through the available Lexus Multimedia System.

This system includes standard Bluetooth® technology that allows you to sync your smartphone with your car and stream audio or answer incoming phone calls. With Lexus Enform Wi-Fi, you can stream from your device or through internet radio without concern for data limits.

All music information is viewable on an 8-inch multimedia touchscreen display or an available inch floating touchscreen that sits above the dashboard over the center stack and near your line of sight.

With the larger screen in the Lexus NX, you can view multiple information, like navigation and music, at the same time. Thanks to the split-screen function of this feature, you can receive turn-by-turn navigation directions while making adjustments to your on-screen playlist.

You’ll also be able to access some of your favorite apps via the touchscreen, through the standard Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, or Amazon Alexa integrated features. That way, your center touchscreen transforms into an extended smartphone, allowing you to use the same touching and swiping movements you use on your smartphone to select the digital features you want to access.
