Cheap straight talk phones

Cheap straight talk phones DEFAULT

Many of money expert Clark Howard&#;s fans have turned to TracFone-owned Straight Talk for cheap cell phone service. Should you make the switch?

Straight Talk partners with the Big 4 networks, lets you bring your own phone and is available at Walmart.

Straight Talk Review: Everything You Need to Know

I wanted to know how Straight Talk compares to its prepaid competitors, so I signed up for a day plan to review call and text performance, data speeds, customer service and more.

Overall, there were more pros than cons, but Straight Talk probably isn&#;t for everyone. Read on to learn why.

Table of Contents:

Plans and Pricing

Straight Talk has a handful of monthly plans available at Walmart and on StraightTalk.com. Unlimited and fixed data plans are available, so there is something for everyone.

When I purchased the $45 plan, it included 10GB of high-speed data. Now, it&#;s 25GB for the same price.

That&#;s a good value compared to the $35/month plan, which only includes 5GB of high-speed data before you&#;re slowed to 2G speeds for the rest of your billing cycle.

Unlimited data plans do exist, including a $55/month plan that now includes 10GB of mobile hotspot data.

In addition to its monthly plans, Straight Talk offers 3-month, 6-month and month data plans at a discounted rate. There are also slightly lower prices for plans with auto-refill.

Network Partners

Straight Talk is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), which is a cell phone provider that doesn&#;t have its own towers but partners with one or more networks to provide coverage.

One of Straight Talk&#;s selling points is that it works on all of the Big 4 networks: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint.

To be clear, that doesn&#;t mean you&#;ll get access to all four networks at the same time. You will only get one. The network will be chosen based on your location and device.

Getting Started

Straight Talk is available at more than 3, Walmart locations nationwide, but you can also order SIM cards, service plans and phones through StraightTalk.com.

I ended up purchasing a SIM card and day plan from Walmart&#;s electronics section, but that wasn&#;t my initial plan.

Ordering Process

At first, I ordered a SIM card from StraightTalk.com. I didn&#;t read the fine print that said the SIM card would be delivered by FedEx and required a signature.

Typically, prepaid carriers will send SIM cards through the U.S. Postal Service and leave them in your mailbox.

FedEx said they attempted to deliver the SIM card three times, but I never had a note left on my door. Eventually, the package was returned to Straight Talk.

Two weeks after my initial order, I gave up with the website and just drove to Walmart.

Activating Service

Once I got home from Walmart with the SIM Activation Kit, I opened it up and inserted the AT&T SIM card that worked with my unlocked Moto G6 test phone.

I followed the step-by-step instructions and got a new phone number, but you can also keep your existing one.

After inserting the SIM card into my phone and following the provided setup instructions, I received this message from Straight Talk:

&#;Your phone or device is in the process of being Activated. Please wait 5 minutes and then test your service. If after 1 hour your service is still not active, please contact us at If you have a Remote Alert System, contact us at For Car Connection, contact us at &#;

Unfortunately, it ended up taking closer to an hour (not 5 minutes) to get my service up and running.

Phone Options

To save money, you can keep your current phone (check compatibility) and switch to Straight Talk. That&#;s what I did for this test. However, the wireless provider also sells iPhones and Androids if you&#;re ready for an upgrade.

Straight Talk has a wide selection of phones, including a few budget devices that are free with plan purchase.

If you can&#;t pay the full price of the phone, up to month financing is offered on some devices. However, it may not be 0% financing. For that reason, you may want to shop elsewhere for a phone.

Call and Text Performance

For the 30 days that I tested Straight Talk using an AT&T SIM card, I experienced zero dropped calls and zero missing text messages from my home location in Atlanta, Georgia.

In the past, I&#;ve had more issues with AT&T MVNOs compared to Verizon MVNOs. Not this time!

When I called my family and friends, I always made sure to ask them to rate the call quality. They said they were able to hear my voice loud and clear.

Wi-Fi Calling is available on select devices, but I was unable to try out this feature.

Data Speeds

Slow data is a big concern for people who like to stream video and music, surf the web and use social media apps.

Overall, Straight Talk&#;s data speeds were not impressive. I conducted 10 speed tests using the Speedtest app and the average was less than 10 Mbps.

That&#;s plenty fast for streaming, but there were times when YouTube videos did buffer a little bit.

From my experience testing low-cost cell phone providers, Verizon MVNOs have had faster data speeds. One of them, Total Wireless, is owned by the same company as Straight Talk.

Customer Service

I read lots of complaints about Straight Talk&#;s customer service on the Better Business Bureau&#;s website, but the agent I spoke to helped me troubleshoot the SIM card delivery issue with FedEx.

In addition to phone and chat support, customers can text for help with their service.

For example, I texted USAGE to throughout my day trial of Straight Talk&#;s service and received a summary of my data usage a few minutes later.

If you text HELP to , you&#;ll receive a list of the carrier&#;s top help keywords.

Pros and Cons

Pros and Cons of Straight Talk Cell Phone Service

Final Thought

Straight Talk is a popular prepaid carrier because it&#;s easy to keep your phone, number and the network that you love.

The pricing isn&#;t the lowest that you can find, but the $45 for 25GB deal is very similar to what other wireless providers market as &#;unlimited&#;— and it doesn&#;t break the bank.

Many people will be perfectly happy with Straight Talk, but I don&#;t recommend it if you&#;

  • Want the fastest data speeds
  • Rely heavily on customer service
  • Require unlimited mobile hotspot

The good news is that Straight Talk isn&#;t your only option. I had better experiences when I tested Total Wireless and Mint Mobile, two other prepaid cell phone providers with affordable plan options.

The 9 Best Straight Talk Phones to Buy at Walmart in

Final Verdict

We chose the Apple iPhone SE () as our best overall pick because of the innovative tech at your fingertips in a streamlined build and at a very affordable price point. If you’re an iPhone fan that doesn’t care about having the largest display or dark mode for photos, this option through Straight Talk is an excellent way to own a flagship iPhone model for less. For Android users, we recommend the Samsung Galaxy A50 for its large and attractive display, quick charging and long-lasting battery, and the advanced camera system.

What to Look for in Straight Talk Phones

Storage

Storage capacity is an important spec to look for before you decide on a Straight Talk Phone. Older models will likely have less storage than newer models that offer as much as GB. Many people will find 64GB of onboard storage to be more than enough, but if you use a lot of storage-heavy apps or take a lot of photos, you may want to find a phone that’s compatible with an external storage solution like an SD card or offers cloud storage.

Speed

The base coverage plan from Straight Talk offers 5GB of data at what they simply refer to as high speeds. If you exceed that limit, the rest of your coverage will be at 2G for the month, which could impact performance—especially if you live in a rural area. Some of the newest iPhones and other Android models are also eligible for 5G coverage where it’s available. If that’s something you want in your next device, make sure that both the model and the Straight Talk network support it where you live.

Data

In the traditional world of contract-based cell phone carriers, plans are doled out based on data usage. Straight Talk Wireless operates similarly by offering plans from as little as 5GB of data with unlimited talk and text to plans that offer 20GB of hotspot data and GB of cloud storage. The key difference, though, is that you aren’t locked into a contract and you can switch your data plan to meet your data needs. You can even add on an extra line or add 1GB to 2GB of extra data if you’re running low. When you’re starting out, though, consider how you use your phone to help you figure out a suitable plan. Your current bills are a helpful reference point.

1. Samsung Galaxy S21

Samsung rolled into with its most powerful lineup yet — the Galaxy S21 family. It maintains the three-model approach from last year, and Straight Talk has finally added them all to the menu, joining the originally available Galaxy S

The Galaxy S21 shares plenty of features with its more powerful siblings, and it starts with the internals. The same processor powers all three, and Android 11 is on board with Samsung’s One UI skin, and they feature dust and water resistance. Their dynamic 2x AMOLED screens are among the best in the industry, and all three devices have the same resolution but in different sizes.

This year, the basic Galaxy S21 packs a triple camera setup, capped off by a 64MP main shooter. With it comes a pair of 12MP lenses and a 10MP selfie camera for good measure. The larger Galaxy S21 Plus shares the same unit, but the Galaxy S21 Ultra truly deserves its name. It packs a MP main shooter and a pair of 10MP lenses, and a 12MP shooter for good measure.

2. Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series

The Samsung Galaxy S line-up may be more popular, but more demanding Samsung fans will prefer the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 smartphones. These come with more powerful specs, a larger display, and an S Pen stylus that will turn your device into a much more productive tool. Prices start at $, but the Note experience is tough to beat, and these are some of the best Straight Talk phones.

This year we have two versions of the Note: the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. The most notable differences between the two phones are the display, construction, and cameras. There are some other differences, clearly (such as the slightly smaller battery in the Galaxy Note 20), but otherwise, the devices are pretty similar.

The main differences are in construction. The Note 20 has a plastic body and a flat display, while the Note 20 Ultra comes with a metal/glass construction and a curved edge screen. Check the specs below to see the differences in more detail.

  • Display: inch, Full HD+

3. Samsung Galaxy S20 FE

Eric Zeman / Android Authority

As usual, Samsung kicked off with its hottest device lineup: the Samsung Galaxy S20 family. This included the Samsung Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 Plus, and Galaxy S20 Ultra. Along with different sizes and price points, there are some other key differences between the three. But as the phones have aged, Straight Talk has slimmed its pickings down to the latest addition to the family.

Samsung introduced the Galaxy S20 FE as the most affordable member of ’s flagship line. It makes a few sacrifices to keep costs down, but the large battery, powerful selfie camera, and rainbow of finishes make the S20 FE worth a solid look. You’ll find ’s Snapdragon processor onboard as well as up to 8GB of RAM and GB of storage.

Perhaps best of all are the color options Samsung chose. You can grab the blue shade seen above as well as different hues of red, white, yellow, and more.

4. Apple iPhone 12 series

You may be on an Android site, but there’s no denying that the new iPhone 12 series are a great bunch. These phones find a sweet spot that nicely balances performance and usability, but all of them come with stunning cameras, incredible performance, and an amazing ecosystem of apps and accessories.

iOS isn’t to everyone’s taste and requires a few compromises regarding file management and customization. But there is no denying the quality of many of the apps available. Editing video on your mobile device is fiddly but doable thanks to the insanely performant processors, and games fair extremely well.
