My husband will be taking a job just north of Portsmouth, NH at the Naval Base in Maine. I will be stationed in Boston on commercial street at the Coast Guard station. I was super excited about Boston, but after reading multiple comments from people, I'm actually really nervous. I'm a very outgoing friendly person and I don't like being around negative/rude people. I'm starting to rethink my choice in Boston, but I'm keeping my hopes up that they're wrong.

As for housing, I have no idea where to look. We're recently married, no kids, one cat. Right now we're in a townhome in Charleston, SC with a garage and we would really like to try to have a garage again. The things we're looking for:

-2 Bedrooms (at least)
-Safe neighborhood
-Not an apartment, definitely a house
-Rent approximately $2k-$2.5k (definitely not buying as we are moving again in 4 years)
-Basement and/or garage
-Driveway (trying to avoid street parking due to family visiting)
-Commute for both of us not exceeding an hour (I've found anything south of Boston is a pretty far commute for my husband)

I've been searching on Zillow and Craigslist but I feel I may have limited myself and I'm having trouble finding houses. In Charleston we have quite a few housing developments that offer the houses for rent, does anyone know of any developments like that around Boston?

I've also been told that I would probably need to be using public transportation. I know in DC, they have parking available at some of their metro stations and I was wondering if that's the same in Boston?

Any advice/insight would be great!

These are the cities we have found houses in:
Quincy
Bellevue
Dedham
Natik
Watertown
Newton
Waltham
Cochituate
Belmont
Winchester
Arlington
Winthrop
Revere
Reading
Wakefield
Wilmington
Swampscott
Andover
Ipswich
Rockport
Billerica

The Boston mean/rude factor is overplayed and largely untrue. People are kind when treated kindly. However, if you do something stupid/thoughtless or behave rudely yourself, you'll be treated in kind. That is the real difference/modus operandi.

Is it right/good? Debatable, but it is what it is.

My point is, these kinds of behaviors are limited. If you ask someone in Boston for help, they will help you gladly. Or if you are friendly to another person from this area, they will be nice to you as well.

As far as where to live... You are going to have a very difficult time finding a decent house to rent, especially at the price point you are citing. Rental houses are fairly rare here for many reasons, but mostly due to the shortage of supply of Single Family homes and strong real estate market. As such, house rentals go for a substantial premium over an apartment or townhouse ($3K+ is reasonable estimate). Obviously some towns are less expensive then others, but they are also going to be less desirable areas.

Since your husband will have a reverse commute (he'll be going in the opposite direction of traffic), I'd say you should favor towards being closer to Boston than NH. The Coast Guard base does have some parking, but I'm not sure what rank or position you need to be to qualify for a permit. I know my friend who works for the DOD parks there freely during the weekend, but doubt that flies during the work week.

As far as towns to target, I'd say these make hte most sense, thoughy I do not think you'll find anything in Winchester or Belmont in your pricepoint. I'd look in melrose as it should be affordable and convenient with easy access to the orange line and commuter rails for you, but also close to the high way for him to shoot up to NH.

Belmont
Winchester
Arlington
Reading
Wakefield
Wilmington
Andover
Billerica
Melrose
Burlington
Woburn

I am not sure I'd recommend all of these places to BUY in, but for shorter term rentals they seem to make sense for you.

Thank you so much for the recommendations! We were able to find at least one house in each of those cities for our price range. We did look at $3k and that definitely opened up our options. It wouldn't be a huge deal to increase our price range, which we might end up doing if none of the other places work out.

The Coast Guard base has parking but not enough for the amount of people stationed there. I was told if I didn't get there early enough I wouldn't be able to find parking and I would end up paying for street parking. I usually run in the morning so it wouldn't be a big deal to get there early and go for a run or something before work if there's a place to run down there, but I'd like to have the back up of the commuter rail.

I'll definitely look at Melrose. I remember seeing quite a few things in there but I skipped over it for some reason, I think it was because I hadn't seen too many people recommend it. But I'll definitely check it out now!

And I'm very relieved to hear about the personalities! I was hoping people were just exaggerating! That seems to be what it is!

I think the base is in Kittery, Maine. I use to be stationed in Portsmouth when the Air Force Base was still opened. I will tell you its a long commute to the Portsmouth area from Greater Boston. When winter settles in and if its a bad winter, that commute is difficult regardless if its a reverse commute or not. So please keep that in mind when choosing housing. Maybe you could try living in a half way point at least initially, until you get the feel for the region.

I'm going to recommend because of his commute, that you do not consider anything south of Boston. Quincy, Dedham forget them. He would either have to travel right through Boston or go all the way around it on Rt 128. His commute would be ridiculously long, and he would burn out. By the time winter came he would be saying the hell with this. I did that type of commute from Mass to NH during those years in Portsmouth. I ended up moving up to NH because of it. That kind of commute really takes a toll on a person.

I would look at as has been listed a number of communities North of Boston. Some that are not on the list. Rockport, Salem, Danvers where either of you could get to your destinations fairly well. Or I would look as has been listed, Wakefield, Billerica, Andover, Burlington. All areas with good road connections to either location. Melrose is also a good location, though I'm not sure how the road connections from there would be for your husband. Adding time to his commute that is.

Parking for you yes is limited. The earlier you get to work the better your chances, or you will run into trouble finding parking. The CG Base is crammed in to say the least in a very crammed in area of Boston. Boston is probably the most European style city in America. Narrow old roads and street parking is at a premium to say the least. Let alone a parking lot. Parking is very expensive.

I would also talk to the CG in Boston themselves. Is it just the Navy or does the CG have I think they are called Ombudsman. Where you can get information on housing etc when your transferring locations.

Best of Luck to you. I'm sure you will get it all worked out. It is a chore and a lot of work when you move and not familiar with an area. Ask all the questions you want on City data. You will find plenty of people that can give info.

How can one person work in Boston and the other, in Maine or NH? Yikes. So far apart.

What about Ipswich though? It's not far from rte 95 for commuting either way. Also, it has the commuter rail into Boston. Just a thought. Another nice town is Rowley--not much there but it's gorgeous and rural and parts of it are right next to 95 and close to the commuter rail. To me, if you move any closer to Boston, the person commuting northward is going to have a horrible commute, especially in winter with the snow.

Ipswich would be my suggestion, too. You would NOT want to commute from any community s/sw of the city.

Have a look at the Newburyport and Rockport commuter rail lines. Those towns would be your best bet.

Welcome to New England. We are not as friendly as Charleston, but it's not as bad as you've heard.

Definately on 95, time wise I'd say Topsfield on 95 puts you right in the middle with Boston being closer by mileage but equal or of course more if you left at peak drive times. Parts of Ipswich, Newbury, Rowley and Boxford are in the same general area as well. Newburyport will get you close to Kittery but make the Boston commute longer, though there are decent train and bus options.

I'd probably reserve judgement on that 'til you get here.Life can be tough here, hard edged. It will be Culture Shock, moving from SC. But don't worry, just plunge in.

For your hubby, commuting from Waltham, Burlington, etc. to Kittery, ME will be a Hellish commute. I'd add to the other comments recommending an area more "in between" Boston & Kittery (or is it Portsmouth?).

A town on the MBTA train line from Rockport to Boston would let you take the train to work, & hubby have less of a drive. Also most of those "North Shore" towns have a lot of great New England personality. And BTW, Portsmouth NH is a GREAT town, but then you'd have the big commute.

Of the towns near Boston you mentioned: I'd pick Arlington 1st, Watertown 2nd. Lots of good restaurants in each, close to Boston. (Ignoring hubby's commute, but they do both have "personality").

A RICH HERITAGE BUILT ON TRUST

In the late 1800’s, the United States Life Saving Service, now known as the US Coast Guard, built a station of solid granite perched overlooking Narragansett Bay. The architects, responsible for the resilient building, are the famed McKim, Mead & White.  Today it is home to the Coast Guard House Restaurant.

The Coast Guard House Restaurant established itself in the 1940s and is revered for serving locally harvested seafood. The restaurant was transformed in 1979 to a year round dining destination. Over the past decade we have been recognized on a state and national level as a premier dining destination. Offering a stunning & unrivalled view of The Pier Districts’ historic Narragansett Bay, The Coast Guard House has attracted family and friends for generations.

Today, the Coast Guard House Restaurant is experiencing a total rejuvenation, courtesy of Super Storm Sandy. We are offering fresh new tastes, a completely new lounge and dining room area & a renewed commitment to providing an unforgettable dining experience.

Station/Boat Location~
USCGC SENECA(270')

Date there~
2003-2006

Weather~
You will experience all four seasons in New England. Of course, many joke that there is one really long winter and a brief summer. The foliage in the fall is beautiful and the temperature is usually comfortable cool into October. Sometime the snow starts as early as October. Some areas experience a "mud season" in and around February-April. The spring can be very rainy and range in temperature from the 40's to the 80's. The summers can be as hot as they are cold. The average temp in the summer is probably 75 degrees or so--maybe even 78 on average. The winters are full of snow and ice for the most part. Be sure to have a lot of warm clothes, boots and a shovel. :)

Military facilities~
The USCG base in Boston is small. Parking is scarce and sometimes hard to find if all of the three 270s are in port. There is a commissary at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, MA.
There is housing in the area, but not in Boston itself.
There is an exchange on the base at 427 Commercial Street in Boston. There is also a USO office there and all hands club called "Coastie Joe's Cafe".

Medical~
This is from the Seneca website:
The Coast Guard Cutter SENECA operates a small sickbay, which consists of one Health Services Technician under the supervision of the ISC Health Services Clinic Senior Medical Officer. The HS is responsible for the overall health and well being of the crew. He/She will provide routine health care, schedule all medical/dental appointments, and act as the health benefits advisor for the command.
While inport the ships HS is supported by the ISC Medical Clinic, which is staffed with one Physician, one Physicians Assistant, one Dentist, one Hygienist, and 12 Health Services Technicians. The clinic also has a full service pharmacy. There is no duty HS available after working hours.
At the present time dependant care is not offered at the Clinic. Dependants are encouraged to enroll in TRICARE Prime or Brighten Marine USFHP.
While inport the sick bay hours are 0700-1300. For after hour emergencies you may go to the local emergency room. While underway the HS is available 24 hours.
ISC Boston Clinic phone number is 617-223-3121
TRICARE North is a popular choice for dependants. There is also Martin's Point.

Housing~
The housing is located in:
South Weymouth, Hull, Wakefield, and other surrounding areas, though these are the most often heard of.
People who choose to live on the economy are eligible for BAH.

Shopping~
There is plenty of shopping to be had in and around Boston. Massachusetts sales tax is 5%.
New Hampshire is not a far drive and has no sales tax. There are outlets in Massachusetts, specifically Wrentham Village Outlets off of Route 495. However, I recommend, making the trip to Tilton, New Hampshire for the Tilton Outlets or shopping in and around Nashua, NH. You could also visit Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, ME for some other great outlets.

Child Care/Schools~
There is no military child care on or around the base in Boston. However, you can contact Hanscom AFB. They have a Child Development Center. The number is (781) 377-1279. Before and after school age care is available at most schools in the community.
Hanscom also has a New Parent Support Program. Bundles for baby classes are held on a regular basis. Information can be obtained at the Hanscom Family Support Center at 781-377-4222.

Adult Schools~
Massachusetts, and Boston in particular, are known for the wealth of colleges and universities. Boston College, Boston University, UMASS, Bunker Hill Community College, Wellesley, Babson, etc.

Fun Activities~
Boston has so much to do in the way of history. You can walk the Freedom Trail, visit historical sites and take tours. There are also Duck Tours, the swan boats, Boston Common, skating in the winter on the frog pond, and so much more.
Six Flags is about 2 1/2 hours west of the city on the Mass Pike in Agawam, MA. Canobie Lake in New Hampshire is about 45 minutes north of Boston. Hampton Beach and other great beaches in New Hampshire is about an hour north of Boston as well. Quebec is about 4-6 hours north. Cape Cod is about an hour south. There is so much to do, I couldn't possibly post it all here.

"The hotel was gorgeous and historically important, and the location was the best; I walked everywhere. Excellent rates for Boston. The king bed in my room was the best bed I've ever slept on. Everything was immaculate. The staff was knowledgeable, friendly, efficient, and responsive. This will definitely be my hotel of choice when I come to Boston.2021-05-02"

"A lovely little hotel in a great location. I liked that it was a smaller place and not a giant, corporate monstrosity. The rates were a bit high, but the room was comfortable and nicely appointed, and it had everything I needed. The staff was accommodating. Fabulous complimentary breakfast. I'd definitely stay here again.2019-10-16"

"Excellent location for visiting Beacon Hill and the Boston Common. Hotel room was large, and the bed was comfortable. Nice bathroom. Ask for a room on a higher floor on weekends; the 2nd floor bar was very busy. Our stay was quite enjoyable.2015-03-10"

"Good location. The hotel room was fine. Not much of a view, though, and the window was so filthy that we kept the curtains closed. The $58 parking fee was outrageous.2021-08-27"

"Lots of restaurants, stores, and sightseeing in the area. The bathroom was old, and the plumbing was patched. The corking around the toilet bowl leaked. The hotel staff was welcoming and wonderful; they went above and beyond to meet my needs. 2020-12-17"

"Convenient to Mass General Hospital. The room was comfortable, quiet, and had a nice view of the Boston Harbor. The hotel staff was helpful.2020-10-17"

"About a 10-minute walk from MGH, so it's convenient if you have a medical appointment. Self-parking cost $15 as opposed to $58 for valet parking. The check-in clerk was strictly business. My stay was OK.2020-09-12"

"This was my 2nd stay at this hotel. Good location and friendly service. Spacious room and comfortable bed. Had to ask for more towels. The lobby bar had great pizza and a nice atmosphere for unwinding before bed. Didn't have automatic checkout. I'd happily stay again.2015-09-15"

"Great location, and the Metro stopped just up the street. Hotel was quiet, with a nice view of the city. Good room service food. Staff was helpful and always willing to assist with directions or whatever was required to make our stay enjoyable. Try the South Street Diner while in Boston.2015-02-12"
