How to screen mirror from your iPhone to a Samsung TV in 2 different ways

  • You can screen mirror, or AirPlay, content from your iPhone to your Samsung TV.
  • Most Samsung TV models from 2018 or later are compatible with the current version of AirPlay called AirPlay 2.
  • If your Samsung TV isn't AirPlay 2-compatible, or if you'd prefer a wired connection, you can still use a lightning-to-HDMI adapter to mirror your screen.
  • Visit Insider's Tech Reference library for more stories.

Screen mirroring is a common feature on most new technology that allows you to cast content from the screen of one device to the screen of another. Screen mirroring goes by many different names, but on Apple devices, it's called AirPlay.

Though AirPlay is an Apple feature, since the advent of AirPlay 2 in 2018, it has become much easier to connect across device ecosystems. If you have a Samsung Smart TV made in 2018 or later, you will most likely be able to use AirPlay — see if your model is on this list to be sure.

There are two ways to access AirPlay on your iPhone — you can either select "Screen Mirroring" from the Control Center to mirror your entire iPhone screen, or you can select the AirPlay icon from within some apps to cast content from your iPhone to your TV. Alternatively, you can connect your iPhone to your Samsung TV with an HDMI cable to achieve the same effect. Here's how to do it all.

How to turn on AirPlay on a Samsung TV

Before you can use screen mirroring or AirPlay, you need to first make sure the feature is enabled on your Samsung TV.

1. Using your TV remote, go to "Settings" and select "General."

2. Choose "Apple AirPlay Settings" from the menu.

3. Select "AirPlay" and turn it to "On."

Quick tip: Before you begin, make sure your iPhone and Samsung TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

How to mirror your entire iPhone screen from the Control Center

1. Swipe down from the top-right of your iPhone's screen to bring up the Control Center. For older iPhone models with a home button, the Control Center is accessed by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.

2. Tap "Screen Mirroring" beside an icon of two overlapping rectangles.

3. Select your Samsung TV from the list of available devices.

4. If a passcode appears on your Samsung TV, enter it into the pop-up on your iPhone.

5. Your entire iPhone screen should then begin mirroring onto your Samsung TV. When you play a video on your iPhone, your TV should automatically format it to full-screen.

How to AirPlay content from within apps

If you'd rather not mirror your entire phone's screen to your TV, some major media services like Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and Hulu have an AirPlay button directly in their apps. Unfortunately, Netflix no longer includes the in-app AirPlay option.

Some built-in iPhone apps like the Photos app have the AirPlay option as well, located in the "Share" menu.

1. Once you've made sure your phone and your TV are on the same Wi-Fi network, open the app and select the media you want to play.

2. Find the AirPlay button — a rectangle with a triangle beneath it, usually near the top-right or top left corner of the screen — and tap it. If you're trying to AirPlay from the Photos app, tap the "Share" button, then select "AirPlay."

3. Choose the name of your Samsung TV from the list of available devices.

4. If a passcode appears on your Samsung TV, enter it into the pop-up on your iPhone.

5. Your photo or video should then begin mirroring onto your Samsung TV.

How to screen mirror an iPhone to Samsung TV with an HDMI cord and Lightning Digital AV adapter

If you find it easier to use a wired connection, or if your devices aren't AirPlay-compatible, you can use an HDMI cable and a Lightning-to-HDMI adapter.

A Lightning-to-HDMI adapter is a dongle that attaches your iPhone to an HDMI cable, which connects to your TV. The adapter costs around $40 on Amazon, and you'll also need to buy an HDMI cable if you don't have one already.

1. Connect the Lightning end of the cable to your iPhone.

2. Plug one end of your HDMI cable into the other end of the adapter.

3. Connect the other end of the HDMI cable to your Samsung TV.

4. Switch the input of the television to the corresponding HDMI channel.

5. Begin playing the desired media on your phone to see it on your TV.

How to change AirPlay settings on your Samsung TV

1. Using your TV remote, go to "Settings" and select "General."

2. Choose "Apple AirPlay Settings" from the menu.

3. From here, choose one or more of the following options to make adjustments:

  • AirPlay: This allows you to turn your TV's AirPlay feature on, which only needs to be done the first time you use AirPlay. You can also turn AirPlay off.
  • Subtitles and Captioning: This setting not only allows you to turn subtitles for your selected media on and off, it also lets you change the size, font, and color of the subtitles.
  • About AirPlay: Open this menu if you want to make sure you're running the latest version of AirPlay, or to find information about your current software.
  • Require Code: When you first start using AirPlay, anybody on your Wi-Fi network with a compatible device can connect and mirror to your TV. If you want to prevent this for any reason, you can use this setting to create a passcode users need to enter before they can project anything to your TV.

Screen sharing or screen mirroring allows you to display your mobile device screen onto a TV. While wired connections used to be the standard, now there are easier wireless options to consider. When you want to wirelessly view your smartphone screen on a Samsung TV, first check for these three requirements:

  1. A Miracast compatible smartphone or device.
  2. A Miracast compatible Samsung TV or wireless display adapter.
  3. An open HDMI port on your TV.

The first two requirements have some wiggle room. For example, if the device you want to screen mirror isn’t Miracast compatible, you can always opt for a wired connection, using a micro or mini HDMI cable. If you don’t have a Miracast compatible TV, you can purchase a Miracast wireless display adapter that acts as a receiver and transforms your TV into a screen sharing hub.

Wirelessly Screen Mirror to a Samsung Smart TV

Smartphones running on Android 4.2 or newer operating systems include a screen mirroring technology. For example, if you’re using a Samsung smartphone to screen mirror, it may include something called Smart View, Samsung’s version of screen mirroring. This feature can easily be used on Samsung TVs that feature Wi-Fi connectivity.

To pair a device with screen mirroring technology to your Samsung smart TV, first ensure that your devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Then enable screen mirroring in the settings app of your device and on your smart TV. Select your Samsung TV from the list displayed on your device and follow the on-screen instructions to pair and begin screen mirroring.

Wirelessly Screen Mirror to Standard Samsung HDTV

Screen sharing to a Samsung HDTV that doesn’t have Internet functionality is still possible thanks to wireless display adapters. These adapters are external devices that act as a receiver to your mobile device and establish a connection between your device and a Samsung TV.

There are many wireless display adapters available for purchase. Consider these requirements when selecting an adapter:

  • Wi-Fi Requirements – Some wireless display adapters require a WiFi connection to wirelessly screen mirror. These adapters may not be useful for those to travel frequently or are using it for business purposes.
  • Subscriptions/fees – Some adapters require a monthly subscription or fee in order to use screen mirroring features, while others only require the one-time cost of purchasing the adapter itself.
  • Additional Apps – If you’re not fond of a cluttered phone screen or have limited storage space, be sure that the wireless display adapter you choose doesn’t require downloading an additional app.

To screen mirror your device to a Samsung TV using a wireless display adapter or dongle, follow these steps.

  1. Plug your wireless display adapter into the HDMI port of your Samsung TV and into a power source, such as a wall outlet or power strip. Then change the input source on your TV.
  2. Turn on screen mirroring from display menu in the settings app on your smartphone or mobile device.
  3. Select the adapter from the displayed device list and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the set-up process. For device specific set-up instructions, refer to your adapter’s user manual.

  1. Open the SmartThings app on your Samsung smartphone.

Screen Mirroring With Samsung Smart View

The Samsung Smart View app is another way to mirror content from your Samsung smartphone to your Samsung TV. As of October 2020, Samsung no longer supports this app, as it's focusing on the SmartThings app and ecosystem.

While new users can't download Smart View after October 2020, those who have the app can still use it to mirror their phone's screen to their TV. Optionally, use a casting dongle, such as Chromecast, with Smart View.

On some Samsung TVs, you may need to turn on screen mirroring by going to Source > Screen mirroring or Network > screen mirroring.

  1. Make sure your Samsung smartphone and Samsung Smart TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

If you use a Chromecast, make sure it's connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Samsung smartphone.

  2. From your phone, drag down the Notifications bar to view the app shortcuts menu.

  3. Swipe to find and tap Smart View.

  4. Choose your Samsung TV. You'll see your Samsung smartphone's or tablet's screen appear on the TV.

If this is your first time setting up screen mirroring with Smart View, select Allow with the TV remote when the TV asks you to confirm the connection.

  5. When you're finished, tap Smart View on your phone to disconnect and stop mirroring.

Wi-Fi Screen Mirroring

If you have older Samsung devices that aren't supported by SmartThings or Smart View, it's still possible to mirror your phone's contents to your Samsung TV.

To get started, for some older models, press the Source button on the remote, then select Screen Mirroring. For other models, press Menu on the remote, then select Network > Screen Mirroring.

  1. Drag down the Notifications bar on the Samsung phone.

  2. Select Screen Mirroring (on some devices, select Quick Connect).

  3. Your device scans for available devices to connect to. Choose your TV from the list of available devices.

  4. If a PIN appears on the TV screen, enter the number into your smartphone when prompted.

  5. Once the connection is established, you can open most apps and programs from your Samsung smartphone, and the apps mirror to your Samsung Smart TV.

We walk you through the menus and features of Samsung's 2018 TVs so you can outsmart your new smart TV.

How to Set Up Screen Mirroring on 2018 Samsung TVs

Sharing content between your mobile device and your smart TV has never been easier, and you can share everything from video and photos to games and apps. Casting and screen sharing to a Samsung TV requires the Samsung SmartThings app (available for Android and iOS devices).

1. Download the SmartThings app. If you don’t have it on your phone or tablet already, download and install the SmartThings app. When you open the app, it will automatically search for other Samsung devices, so search for and select your TV from the list of devices.

2. Open Screen Sharing. Select Mobile Device from the Connection Guide, and select Screen Sharing (Smart View).

3. Get your phone and TV on the same network. Once you've installed and launched the app on your smartphone or tablet, it will prompt you to connect to the same network as the TV.

4. Add your Samsung TV, and allow sharing. In the SmartThings app, add your TV to the list of connected devices. On the TV, you will be asked to allow sharing, so select Yes using the TV remote.

5. Select Smart View to share content. Once your TV is connected to your phone, select the Smart View option on the app to begin mirroring content between the phone and the TV. Simply select the photos, movies or music from your phone using the on-screen menu on either the television or your device.

6. Use your phone as a remote. You will also be able to use the phone or tablet as a remote control for the TV, making all of the same controls on the remote available through the touch screen.

Galaxy S20 / S20+ : How to Connect Screen Mirror Wirelessly to Samsung TV

Screen mirroring, also called screen sharing, is simply replicating a phone, laptop, tablet or computer screen onto a TV screen.

Every device has specific requirements that must be met in order to effectively screen share. Newer Samsung devices have a screen mirroring feature, or Smart View, while older devices and operating systems may not have that feature. To find out if your Samsung or other Android device has screen mirroring or Smart View functionality, use two fingers to pull down the notification menu and look for the Smart View icon.

Benefits of Screen Sharing

Screen sharing can be used for entertainment in the home and as a presentation tool in business. Screen sharing from your mobile devices allow you to share photos and downloaded movies, videos, music, applications, presentations and more directly on your TV screen.

While traditional screen sharing used a wired connection (like an MHL cable), many device manufacturers offer options that allow you to wirelessly screen share.  You can navigate anywhere in the room without being tethered to the TV.

How to Screen Share

Samsung has streamlined their wireless screen sharing options by making their smart TVs compatible with some Samsung phones and tablets. To begin screen mirroring, simply select “screen mirroring” on your TV under the “sources” menu. On your compatible Samsung phone, select the Smart View icon under the notifications menu and pair your devices.

To connect your Samsung phone to a non-Samsung TV, you may use a wired HDMI connection or a smartphone to TV adapter like this one. The ScreenBeam Mini2 is a great wireless replacement for traditional wired connections. This low cost product wirelessly connects directly with your device. It does not rely on WiFi, so it does not bog down your home network.

How to Screen Share from a Samsung Phone

Below are step-by-step instructions on how to display content from your Samsung device screen on your TV:

  • Connect a Wireless Display Receiver (like the ScreenBeam Mini2) into an available HDMI port on your TV.
  • Turn on the TV and set it to display the input from the correct HDMI port. Verify that the “Ready to Connect” screen appears on the TV.
  • To turn on the screen mirroring function on your Samsung smartphone/tablet, drag your finger from the top of the screen to pull down the notifications bar. Alternatively, look for “Wireless Display Application” under settings.
  • Tap Screen Mirroring OR Smart View OR Quick Connect.
  • Your device will scan for Receiver devices to which they can connect (such as ScreenBeam Mini2). Select the Receiver from the device list.
  • You may be required to enter a PIN, which will be displayed on the TV screen. Enter the PIN in the PIN text box, then click Connect.
  • Wait for the device to pair with and connect to the Receiver. Once it connects, the device’s screen will be displayed on the TV.
