Envy won't print black

Dear Customer.

Thanks for using HP Forum.

I would like to suggest to at first take out the black ink cartridge and physically check if the cartridge is still full. If confirmed its still have ink inside, please insert back and wait until it finish the calibration.

once done, kindly try to trigger the printer status report and see if any improvement.

After completing the above and you still find the issue, please try the above steps:

Clean the ink cartridges

If you found defects on the Print Quality Diagnostic Report, run an automatic tool to clean the ink cartridges.

NOTE: To avoid issues that require cleaning, always turn the printer off with the Power button.

  1. Load letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the paper tray.

  2. On the printer control panel, press the Down Arrow () to select Tools, and then press OK.

  3. Press the Down Arrow () to select Clean Printhead, and then press OK. The printer cleans the printhead, and then prints a printhead test page.

  3. Lift the scanner lid, and then place the page on the glass according to the instructions on the alignment page.

  4. Close the scanner lid, and then touch OK.

Print another Print Quality Diagnostic Report, and examine the page.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, you can stop troubleshooting.

  • If these steps did not resolve the issue, and the Print Quality Diagnostic page does not show track marks or smears, skip to the step to replace the problem ink cartridge .

  • If the Print Quality Diagnostic Report shows track marks or smears, continue to the next step to clean the area around the ink nozzles.

Step Manually clean the area around the ink nozzles

Do not perform these steps unless the test page or printout specifically shows smeared text or track marks. Clean the area around the ink nozzles if you see track marks or smears on the printouts.

Hewlett-Packard printers usually print documents without any hiccups. However, some users have stated on forums that their HP printers don’t print black ink.

Most users will, at first, no doubt assume that their printers have run out of ink. However, the printers don’t print black, even though the cartridges still include some black ink.

There are some easy methods to fix the HP printers that aren’t printing black ink, so be sure to check them out below.

What to do if my HP printer is not printing black?

  1. Clean the printhead
  2. Open the Printer troubleshooter
  3. Fix the printing with HP Print and Scan Doctor
  4. Add a genuine Hewlett-Packard cartridge to the printer
  5. Replace cartridges that are low on ink
  6. Align the printhead

1. Clean the printhead

HP printers with clogged printhead nozzles don’t usually print black ink. Thus, cleaning the printhead is a resolution some HP printer users have confirmed fixes the printing.

Note that you might need to do that a few times to fully restore print quality. How you clean a printhead can vary slightly between different HP printer models.

You can usually select a Deep Cleaning or Clean Printhead option from a Printer Maintenance menu on an HP printer’s control panel.

Selecting that option might then print a page showing some pattern output for various colors.

So make sure there is some paper loaded in the printer before selecting to clean the printhead. Check out your printer’s manual for more specific details on how to clean its printhead.

2. Open the Printer troubleshooter

  1. Windows 10 users can open the Printer troubleshooter by clicking the Cortana Type here to search button on the taskbar.
  2. Enter printer in the search box, and select Printers & scanners.
  3. Select Troubleshoot your printer, and click Run the troubleshooter.
  4. Choose your HP printer model listed in the troubleshooter’s window.
  5. Then press the Next button to fix the printing with the troubleshooter.

Windows includes a Printer troubleshooter that can come in handy for fixing printers when they don’t print as expected.

So that might provide some fixes for HP printers not printing black ink. Follow the guidelines above to open the Printer troubleshooter.

3. Fix the printing with HP Print and Scan Doctor

  1. Download the HP Print and Scan Doctor software’s setup wizard.
  2. Click HPPS.dr.exe in the to install HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  3. Select Start to choose your HP printer, and then press theNext button.
  4. Select the Fix Printing option.
  5. Thereafter, the software might display wrench icons that highlight it fixed something. If so, close the troubleshooter and try printing again.
  6. Alternatively, you might see an X icon. If so, continue with the troubleshooter and follow the instructions it provides to fix the issue.

Alternatively, Hewlett-Packard printer users can also utilize the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility to fix printing.

That’s a troubleshooter more specifically designed for Hewlett-Packard printers. Users can fix printing with HP Print and Scan Doctor as follows.

Also, if your HP Envy printer doesn&#;t print after Windows 10 upgrade, take a closer look at our guide to fix this issue in no time.

4. Add a genuine Hewlett-Packard cartridge to the printer

Third-party ink cartridges don’t always work so well on Hewlett-Packard printers.

Run a System Scan to discover potential errors

Run a PC Scan with Restoro Repair Tool to find errors causing security problems and slowdowns. After the scan is complete, the repair process will replace damaged files with fresh Windows files and components.

As such, replacing a third-party cartridge with a more official Hewlett-Packard cartridge might fix an HP printer that’s not printing black ink.

The HP website includes a search box where users can enter their printer models in a search box to find compatible ink cartridges for them.

Also note that there are fake, counterfeited HP ink cartridges. So it might be worth checking if your cartridge is a fake.

HP printer users can check for fakes by scanning the QR codes on the cartridges with a QR scanner or SureSupply app.

Alternatively, users can enter serial numbers on the cartridge labels at the Hewlett-Packard verification page to validate them.

5. Replace cartridges that are low on ink

Most users will probably check the ink levels when a printer stops printing black ink. However, some users might overlook replacing a cartridge if it’s not completely out of ink.

You should replace the black ink cartridge when it’s very low on ink, but not necessarily completely out of ink. An exclamation mark on the ink level indicator highlights when a cartridge is running low on ink.

So replace the black ink cartridge if you see an exclamation mark for it on the printer control panel’s ink level indicator.

6. Align the printhead

A printer might not print black ink if it has not been calibrated. Thus, calibrating an Hewlett-Packard printer by aligning its printhead might fix its printing.

Most HP printers will include an Align Printhead option on their Printer Maintenance or Tools control panel menus that users can calibrate them with.

Selecting that option will then calibrate the printer and print an alignment page. HP printer manuals will provide more specific printhead alignment guidelines for their respective models.

The above resolutions will probably fix HP printers so that they print black ink. If the above resolutions still don’t fix the printing, the printer itself might need repairing.

Users can return HP printers that are still within their warranty periods to the manufacturer for repairs. So check the warranty period of your printer to see if you can return it to Hewlett-Packard.

HP Printer not printing black ink? Let&#;s fix it:

Out of the various issues printer users experience, we&#;d say that the HP printer not printing black ink is right up there (or is it down there?) with the basics. Why? Well, because ink is black, of course.

It&#;s more than that, though: while color printers have been a thing for decades, there are still plenty of non-color printers used and available at every price level, whether we&#;re talking two-digit or four-digit price tags. Plenty of offices don&#;t bother getting a color printer at all: since they will only be printing text documents, they need a printer that excels in areas besides creating a nice palette.

Therefore, this is an issue that affects the widest range of users and all kinds of HP printer ink cartridges. Whether you are someone with a color printer who&#;s getting rainbows but no black or a non-color users that needs those documents printed quickly, we&#;re going to guide you through the HP troubleshooting steps with this all-too-familiar problem.

Did you install the black ink cartridge properly?

For all their modern perks, printers still use a fairly rudimentary way of feeding the ink (or toner) to the printer. That suits the manufacturers just fine, as you need to constantly replace the cartridges.

It might not suit you, though, as you might have done something wrong while installing the black ink cartridge properly and now your HP printer is not printing black ink. This often happens to users who burn through an entire cartridge in less than a week: they often tend to forget that cartridge installation is a delicate process and needs to be handled carefully every time. While not a rule, it also more commonly happens with remanufactured HP ink cartridges than official ones, as not all remanufacturers adhere to the same standards.

So, let&#;s have you first check out the black HP ink cartridge. Remove it from the printer, ensure that the plastic cover is removed (you&#;d be surprised how often this is an issue) and then re-insert the cartridge in the position that your manual tells you to. Make sure everything is nice and tight and that the cartridge feels connected to the printer.

Did you calibrate your HP printer after installing the ink cartridge?

If you did the above and the black ink will not print, then we have some good news and bad news for you. The good news is that we know you didn&#;t do a bad job of installing the black ink cartridge. The bad news is that we still can&#;t figure out the reason behind your HP printer not printing black ink.

There&#;s a good chance you aren&#;t familiar with the calibration process at all. If you are, you probably don&#;t know that cartridges should be re-calibrated every single time a new one is installed. It&#;s far from a HP printer setup thing: it&#;s something you have to do regularly as the printer sees use.

The calibration process is entirely software-sided and much easier than the cartridge installation itself. After you&#;ve connected the HP printer to the computer, navigate your way to the HP Photosmart Toolbox software through the search option in your Start menu. Alternatively, if you don&#;t have that program, you can find your printer under the Printers and Faxes section, click on it and then go for Service this device. This option, however, requires you to have the printer&#;s drivers installed on the computer.

Either software should have some combination of Calibrate the device, Clean the print cartridges and Align the printer, depending on the model you have. Even if you have a new cartridge, there&#;s no harm in going through each of the three steps to ensure full calibration, and let&#;s hope you won&#;t run into anything from the HP printer error code list.

Do you own an older printer? When was the last time you cleaned the printheads?

By this point, we know your cartridge is properly installed and calibrated to the printer. If your HP printer won&#;t print black, that really leaves only one option: the printheads might be dirty. You can familiarize yourself with these things (and how hard they can be to clean) here: What are printer printheads?

This often happens on older printers that have seen too much use.

If you suspect your printheads being dirty is the reason they won&#;t print black ink, you&#;re in for a bit of scrubbing. First, find your model in our HP printer manuals section so you know how to take the printheads out. Once they&#;re out, wash each of them with a damp piece of cotton cloth that&#;s soaked in a cleaning solution like this one. You&#;ll need a gentle touch and the process is a bit time-consuming, but it&#;s worth a shot if you&#;ve been using the same printer for a while. Afterwards, make sure that the printheads are re-inserted exactly as they were or you&#;ll have another problem on your hands.

PrinterHeadlines Tip: This is only really worth doing if your printer isn&#;t new. If you&#;ve used it for less than a few months, it&#;s almost guaranteed that you aren&#;t facing a printhead issue.

If your HP Printer is still not printing black ink, you have one last option

You can probably see where this is going, but don&#;t worry: there&#;s one last thing to try. If your HP printer still won&#;t print black ink, take out the black ink cartridge and insert a colored one in its place. Calibrate the printer again, and then try printing a black-and-white document with it.

If it still doesn&#;t work, that means something&#;s wrong with the black ink cartridge slot or another component. We&#;re past the HP printer troubleshooting part: it&#;s time for the device to be taken to a printer repair shop. If it&#;s under warranty, take it to a HP repairing partner and the fixing will be done for free, although you might end up waiting a bit. If not, any old repair shop will do.

These kinds of repairs probably won&#;t be cheap, but they are almost always a better choice than buying a new printer unless you have the budgetest model out there, in which case you&#;re probably better off just getting a new one.

While all PrinterHeadlines contributors are printer specialists with many years of experience in the tech industry, we will sometimes refer to other articles and websites. How To Reset HP ENVY 4500 Printer 4501

HP ENVY : HP ENVY does not print black ink even with full cartridge

  • Photosmart does not print black ink after replaced the cartridge

I am very frustrated! I can't get my Photosmart print black ink.

Our school sends the documents by e-mail now that we have to print at home. Ideal for them, but not for me. They are usually in PDF format, so I do not have the ability to edit and change the blue color to print, either.

I only use HP cartridges on this printer. I know it's more than a year, in order to call phone support will do no good.

I replaced both cartridges and now it shows black ink completely full, but when I print the printer status report, black is not displayed. Black does not appear on the tool pages, either.

I tried the command "clean printhead" several times. I unplugged and waited. I took all the cartridges. Connections look clean.

What should I do to perform a partial reset or full?

I tried all the techniques of "Troubleshooting" listed on the page Web - align, clean the print heads, install the new cartridges, looking for trouble with the vents, etc.  I have only used HP ink cartridges.

    Hi abruce,.

Usually, it is a result of dried/clogged ink nozzles in the printer or the print head.

According to some other users on the forums, you can remove the print head (use this guide if you are unsure how: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c)

Make sure the cartridges are removed from the print head

Dive head in hot water, nozzles downwards. (about 1 in. of water) and leave any residue of ink to flow. This process should take about 15 minutes. Ensure that the print head is completely dried out and there is no moisture in the electrical contacts or the rest of the part.

    I hope this helps!

There is no error message, just black not appear do not at all.

    And Here is the solution.

Funny how I found an explanation of the problem and how to fix it on a different printer manufacturer's Web site, but not on HP But I digress.

The black cartridge has been blocked. The way of difficulty is:

    1. remove the faulty cartridge from the printer.

    2. place a small amount of boiling water in a cup (about 1/4 in.) and dunk of the print head (the part where the ink comes out) in warm water for a minute. Do not immerse the entire cartridge in hot water, just the print head.

3 take it out, pat against a paper towel, observe the model ink left in the cartridge on the towel. If too little / interrupted, dunk again in hot water for another minute, pat again. You want to get an unbroken line of ink through the length of the print head. Repeat as needed (I did 4 times total).

4 cartridge Pat dry everywhere, put it back in the printer, run cleaning cycles (1 - 2).

    5. If still not good fixed, take out the cartridge and repeat 2 (I had to do it again).

You will lose little ink, cartridge of bad and good a well (you can not run cycles with only 1 cleaning cartridge), but at least you won't have to throw a nearly full cartridge.

  • C does not print... said yellow empty cartridge and is not

I am totally disgusted and frustrated because I've never been.  I tried for hours to get a response of 'Community' to this problem.  It has been reported a million times and I have yet to see a solution.  The printer does not print colors and wrote the yellow cartridge is empty and it is brand new.  I need to color, not black.

Tomorrow at Sams and a new Canon and this POS is going to the dumpster.  This shit has been underway for two months, and I've tried many times to get an answer What a waste

If you have already replaced the cartridges, it seems that your ink system is to give you the question. I suggest to call HP @ and see what options we have to repair or replace the unit.
