Sierra is GMC’s name for its line of full-size pickup trucks that range from a no-frills half-tonner with a V-6 engine to heavy-duty editions rated for big loads to the luxury-appointed Denali model. As in years past, the Sierras are essentially fraternal twins of the Silverado trucks offered by Chevrolet. Multiply that by the vast array of body styles and load ratings available, as well as an outstanding range of powertrains—for example, there are four different versions of the liter V-8 engine, two with aluminum blocks and heads, two with E85 flex-fuel capability—and this GM truck family is hard to beat.
Gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWRs)—indexes of a truck’s work ethic—range from to 11, pounds, and towing capacities range from a modest pounds for the basic V-6 work truck (WT) to 13, pounds for the HD with a Duramax turbo-diesel. As you’d expect of a full-size pickup, the term fuel economy is an oxymoron. EPA ratings run from 12 to 15 mpg city and 17 to 20 mpg highway for series trucks.
Like its close cousin from Chevrolet, the Sierra is an outstanding line of full-size pickups that offer an excellent combination of good looks, work ethic, durability, range of choices, and value.

What’s New for
For the Sierra and Sierra Denali, XM satellite radio becomes standard, and GMC added a few new exterior colors. Sierra HD trucks now include satellite radio and inch wheels as standard on models with dual rear wheels, as well as some new colors.
Like the Chevy Silverado, the Sierra offers a list of choices that defy easy sorting and require careful shopping to match features and capabilities to your budget and needs. As an illustration, check the list of basic choices for just the Sierra WT (work truck): There are five different wheelbases, three body styles, three cargo-bed lengths, six engines (counting the four versions of the liter V-8), and of course the option of four-wheel drive. And this doesn’t begin to cover the options—or models higher in the lineup, such as the top-spec Sierra Denali —with a standard crew cab, a hp, liter V-8, and upscale trim—and the HD and HD heavy-duty trucks.
Accordingly, we present an abbreviated version of the various trim levels, highlighting a few base prices for each. The WT begins at $18, for a regular-cab truck with a inch wheelbase, a hp, liter V-6, and a four-speed automatic. It includes front-disc, rear-drum anti-lock brakes, chrome bumpers, an AM/FM/CD audio with XM and MP3 capability, OnStar, a tilting steering column, and a full-size inch spare tire. In addition to the WT’s standard features, the SLE1 includes a heavy-duty-trailering suspension package, inch chromed steel wheels, fog lamps, body-color side moldings, heated power side mirrors, tinted glass, carpeting, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power door locks with keyless remote entry, power windows, cruise control, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with an integral digital compass.
Stepping up to the SLE2 (extended and crew cabs only) adds inch aluminum alloy wheels, power-adjustable front seats, a center console, power rear windows, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a rear-window defogger. A short-bed SLE2 (inch wheelbase, liter V-8, and four-speed automatic) costs $30, with rear drive and $33, with four-wheel drive. A medium-length bed costs $30, with rear drive and $33, with four-wheel drive, and an SLE2 with the longest bed (inch wheelbase) runs $30, with rear drive and $33, with four-wheel drive. The crew-cab SLE2 begins at $33, and rises to $36, when you add four-wheel drive.
The SLT is available with an extended cab or crew cab. Base prices range from $32, for a rear-drive extended cab to $39, for a four-wheel-drive crew-cab model. SLTs add the following to the SLE2 standard features: way power-adjustable heated front bucket seats, leather seat trim, steering-wheel audio controls, and Bose premium audio.
The super-luxe Sierra Denali comes only as a crew cab and costs $39, with rear-wheel drive and $43, with power going to all four wheels. Standard equipment includes a liter V-8, a six-speed automatic transmission, StabiliTrak stability control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, auxiliary engine-oil and transmission-oil coolers, an automatically locking rear differential, a trailering package, inch polished aluminum wheels, a color-keyed front air dam, a chrome grille and side moldings, a body-color rear bumper, way power-adjustable heated front seats, power-adjustable pedals, two rear-seat headphone jacks, and rear parking assist.
Trim levels for Sierra heavy-duty models—the HD and the HD—generally parallel those of the series in terms of designations (WT, SLE1, SLE2, SLT) and content, with a couple of exceptions. There is no heavy-duty Denali edition, and there are only two engine offerings: a hp, liter gasoline V-8—standard on all HD models—and an optional hp, liter Duramax turbo-diesel V The diesel option adds $ to the bottom line and requires a heavy-duty six-speed Allison automatic transmission, which costs another $ Also, dualies—trucks with two wheels at each end of the rear axle—are available only in the range.

Trim levels and options packages for HDs and HDs are similar to those for the series models. Accordingly, we confine these listings to highlights from the five Sierra models. Others in this vein include the California package, the South Central package, and the Texas Edition.
