How to Make a Button Pillow

I love decorative throw pillows.  I have them all over my house, on the sofa and in the bedrooms.  They are perfect for decorating at the holidays. Holiday throw pillows can really jazz up your holiday decorating scheme.  While searching for good throw pillow patterns I came across this terrific pattern for a button pillow at Bombshell Blingand thought I would share it with you.  Sarah’s Halloween pillow was the inspiration for this Christmas version so check out her site while you are making this project.  It is a simple button throw pillow pattern that can be made in no time at all.  Because of the buttons on this pillow I am going to rate this as an intermediate sewing project but once you learn how to add the button holes it is a simple project.

I decided to use Christmas fabrics for my button pillow to use for this upcoming Christmas season but you could use any fabrics you like.  I purchased my fabrics at JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores but you could head over to Hobby Lobby or Fabric.com to get the perfect fabric for your project.  This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

What you will Need: How to Make a Button Pillow

  • 17″ x 17″ pillow form or pillow
  • 3/4 yd Main Fabric
  • 3/4 yd accent fabric
  • 6 Buttons – I used six 3/4″ round buttons
  • Standard sewing supplies
How to Make a Button Pillow

Step 1:  Cut the Fabrics

The fabric is enough for two pillow cases.  For each pillow you will cut two rectangles and one square. One rectangle will be 8.5″ x 17″ and the other will be 14.5″ x 17″. The square will measure 17″ x 17″. You can make this pillow case smaller or larger if you like.  Just adjust your measurements to fit the pillow or pillow form you have on hand.

Step 2:  Create the Button Placket

Take one of the rectangle fabrics and fold one of the long raw edges by 2″ and press.  Repeat for the other rectangle.  Press.  Stitch along the raw edge using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  This will create a placket that you will add your buttons and buttonholes too.

Step 3:  Add the Button Holes

Add six button holes to the smaller of the two rectangles following your machine’s instructions. Measure down 2 1/4″ from each end and place a mark for your top and bottom button holes.  Once you have placed the first two button holes measure about 2 1/2″ between the rest of the button holes.  This will not be exact.  You will place the button holes in the center of the 2″ placard you created.  My machine has the option of several different shapes of button holes but I chose a basic rectangle for my holes.  Make sure you open the center with a seam ripper without cutting through the stitching.  I used a Frixion heat erasable pen to mark my button holes.  You can get these pens over at my Amazon shop here.

Step 4:  Add the Buttons

Place the buttonhole placard on top of the other rectangle making sure that the square that the pieces create measure 17″ x 17″.  Mark the location for the buttons and sew them on either by hand or with your machine. Because my fabric is black I used tailor’s chalk to mark the location for the buttons.

Step 5:  Sew the pillow together

Button the top and bottom buttons leaving the others unbuttoned.  Place the two buttoned rectangle pieces right sides together with the square piece and sew all the way around using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Turn the pillow case right sides out.

Add the Pillow to the pillow case and button the remaining buttons and you have completed your button pillow.

How to Sew a Button in the Center of a Decorative Pillow

Decorative pillows can set the tone in a room. They allow the rooms décor to be versatile and flexible. A decorative pillow can be simple in style or a more tailored pillow can be displayed. Large pillows look tailored with a button in the center. They add a focal point to a chair or sofa. Oversized, small or medium pillows are more interesting with a single button in the center.

Things You'll Need:

  • Tufting Twine
  • Two Decorative Buttons With Shank
  • Measuring Tape
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Long Upholstery Needle

Measure the center of the pillow. Mark the center.

Measure and mark the center of the other side of the pillow.

Insert the tufting twine through the eye of the long upholstery needle.

Insert the needle through the mark on the front of the pillow. Bring it out the mark on the back side of the pillow. Make sure these marks line up.

Place the shank of the button onto the needle. Allow it to slide down to the mark on the pillow.

Insert the needle through the mark on the back side of the pillow. Bring it through the front mark. This places the needle beside the entrance twine.

Pull through the needle and twine. Slide the second button with the shaft on the needle down to the pillow.

Pull the twine through until the button on the back side is tight against the pillow. It should sink into the pillow a bit.

Insert the needle into the front mark beside the entrance twine. Exit through the back mark. Pull the twine tight. Both buttons should sink in until they appear as though the shafts are touching.

Bring the needle through the hole in the button shaft, then into the fabric and out the back side. Pull tight.

Repeat about four times. Make sure the twine passes through the bottons' shanks.

Tie the knots close to the shaft, hiding it from view.

Tip

If you can't find tufting twine, double a cotton embroidery floss.

Add tassels to your button tuft pillows. Tassels the same color of the pillow are attractive. Contrasting tassels make bold statements.

Warnings:

  • Choose a button size that looks good on the pillow. Match the style of button to the fabric. Do not put a casual button on an expensive fabric.

How to Make a Pillow Out of a Shirt

  • Choose a Shirt

This project can work with most adult shirts, but it's easier with larger shirts. The more fabric in the shirt, the more options for placement and cutting. Larger shirts also give you the option to use a larger pillow form. For the sample pillow, the shirt is a men's large and the pillow is 14 inches.

It's also best to use a shirt without darts or shaping. These elements would change the way the cover fits on the pillow.

  • Measure and Mark the Shirt

The front and back of the pillow cover need to be one inch larger than the pillow form. For example, with a 14-inch square pillow, the fabric should be 15 inches x 15 inches.

With the shirt fully buttoned, use your ruler to visualize how to cut the front piece. If the shirt has a pocket, try to keep the entire pocket on the pillow front, plus about an inch to the side.

Depending on the size of your pillow, you may be able to center the button placket. But you can also make it off-center. Try to leave at least one inch from the buttons at the top and bottom.

Mark where you need to cut out the shirt front.

  • Cut the Front and Back Pieces

It's possible to cut through both the front and back at the same time, however, you're more likely to end up with uneven or crooked pieces. Instead, cut the sides so you can open the shirt while keeping the front buttoned.

Use the rotary cutter and ruler to cut the front piece, then cut the back to match.

You may find that you want to cut the back square lower than the front so you can avoid the yoke. Cutting the back separately is also helpful if you want to match any stripes or other patterns on the shirt.

  • Sew the Pillow Cover

Pin the front and back of the shirt pillow pieces with the right sides together. Be sure to pin the button placket, keeping the layers aligned.

Sew around all four sides with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Back stitch over the button plackets at the top and bottom for reinforcement.

Trim the corners to reduce bulk.

  • Insert the Pillow Form in the Cover

Reach through the button placket and unbutton one or two buttons. Turn the pillow cover right side out and poke the corners into shape.

Press the cover to remove any wrinkles.

Unbutton the rest of the buttons, then slide the pillow inside. Rebutton the pillow cover and your new pillow is finished.

Best Button Detail Pillows and Pillow Cases

Fashionable, decorative, and stylish home furnishings play a key role in designing and making your home feel like home.

Decorations provide color, texture, and aesthetically pleasing properties to every household to give the home an aspect of being complete; in other words, a finishing touch.

One such decorative piece could be a pillow with button detail, which gives interest to many furniture pieces in your homes, such as your bed, chairs, or even a sofa.

    Button Pillows Feature

Button Pillows and Cushions for Decoration

A cushion or Pillow has multi-functional purposes; they are there for comfort, support, and decoration. So why not choose cushions and pillows that are aesthetically pleasing and decorative as well as practical.

The bed pillow buttons could be added as a form of closure or on the Pillow side as a decorative detail. You may sleep on the underside of this Pillow or use another pillow to sleep on, while the buttoned Pillow serves as an adornment.

Small Pillows and cushions decorated or closed with buttons and buttoned details look ideal on your sofa, recliner, or even chairs and add a touch of vintage and classic style to your home.

Likewise, it is easy to take an old pillow or cushion, or pillowcase and decorate it with a few buttons lying around the home.

    Pillow Covers With Buttons

As I have mentioned before, one of the closure types used for many pillow covers is buttons. Most Pillowcases have a foldable or envelope fold closure, while others come with a more secure zipper closure or button closure.

Technically, the buttons are more for embellishment than anything else, but they still function as a closure system.

    Choosing a Button Detail Pillow

    Decoration

    Button Scatter Cushion decorative

When choosing a Pillow or Cushion with Button detail solely as a decorative piece, your options are much more vast. You can opt for any color scheme, texture, or embellishment that suits your home style.

Fabrics such as velvet, satin, tweed, and silk are all gorgeous and appealing. Embroidery, tassels, and buttons likewise make for some stunning trimmings and adornments for further creativity.

The size will solely depend on the use of the Pillow and where you will be placing it, you can use full-sized pillows with decorative casings on your bed, or you can opt for scatter cushions, bolster pillows, or even larger cushions.

    Sleeping

    Button Detail Sleep Pillow

When looking at a button detail pillow for sleeping, I recommend having two sets, one to sleep on, and decorating your bedroom. Otherwise, you can use a Pillow with button details or closure for sleeping; if the buttons do not bother you, you could always turn the Pillow around.

When it comes to sleeping on a pillow, the type of fill is important, like a decorative pillow. You will need to choose the firmness and adjustability of your Pillow from what your personal preference is. There are great options such as feathers, memory foam, latex, buckwheat, microbeads, or just foam chips to choose from. Cotton is always an affordable and good choice in pillow casing for sleeping on as it is cooling, durable, breathable, and easy to care for.
