Your Volkswagen has many dashboard symbols that can become illuminated when the system senses an issue, such as a fuel indicator turning on when it&#;s time to get more gas or a battery indicator turning on when there seems to be low alternator voltage or a charging system failure. One unknown indicator that you may see pop up in your vehicle is the EPC light, which is unique to VW vehicles and stands for Electronic Power Control. But what does this mean?

What is the EPC Light?

Simply put, the EPC Light becomes illuminated on your dashboard when the vehicle&#;s system detects there is any type of power problem. Unfortunately, the light doesn&#;t pinpoint the specific problem, only indicating that there is a general problem that needs to be inspected. Usually when the EPC Light is glowing, whatever caused it also has a glowing warning light as well. For example, if the EPC Light is illuminated due to traction control problems, the traction light will be on as well.

What Cause the EPC Light to Illuminate?

You are driving your car, and suddenly the EPC light displays (often with the engine light) on your dashboard.

Will it damage my engine? Is it dangerous to drive with? How much will it cost to repair my car?

There are many questions regarding the EPC warning light.

In this article, you will learn everything you need to know about the EPC light on your VW or Audi.

What is the EPC light?

The Electronic Power Control (EPC) warning light is an indication of a problem with your throttle system, including the throttle body, accelerator pedal, cruise control, or traction control.

The Volkswagen EPC light often shows up with the Engine, ABS, or ESP Light, depending on where the problem is located.

The Electronic Power Control system is controlled by the engine control unit, brake control unit, transmission control unit, and steering control unit.

Several car models and brands have the EPC system, especially Volkswagen cars, because they manufacture the system. Volkswagen owns many car brands, and because of this, you may also find this warning light in your Audi, Skoda, or Seat.

Common EPC Light Causes

The most common causes of an EPC light showing up on your Audi or VW are a faulty throttle body, a faulty ABS sensor, an ABS ring, or a faulty brake pedal switch.

Here are a few of the issues that could be indicated by the EPC:

  • Throttle body failure
  • Bad ABS Sensor – Common on newer VW Passats
  • Failed brake pedal switch – Common problem on Golf 4 & Fabia
  • Bad ABS Ring
  • Bad ABS sensor wiring
  • A failed brake pressure sensor (Inside the ABS Module)
  • A Bad Engine Sensor
  • Internal engine problem
  • Power steering failure
  • Steering wheel sensor
  • Wiring issues

How to fix the EPC light

Car Diagnostics

The easiest way to fix the EPC issue is by checking the trouble codes in the engine control module or ABS control module telling us with an OBD2 Scanner.

When the EPC warning light is on, it means there are one or several trouble codes stored in one of the control units.

You have to scan the engine control unit, ABS control unit, steering control unit, and transmission control unit for any stored trouble codes.

You can either drive your car to a mechanic workshop and let them read your trouble codes, or you could get to it at home with your own OBD2 scanner.

The cheapest diagnostic scanners can only read the engine control unit. Because this problem could appear in several control units, it’s recommended to either get a more advanced diagnostic scanner or let a workshop read the other control units’ codes.

If the EPC light is showing on your dashboard, but the car is running perfectly fine, you can try to perform a VW EPC light reset with an OBD2 scanner to see if the light comes back. It could be a temporary issue if it doesn’t show up again, but you have to repair the issue if it comes back.

Most of the times when the light is showing up it means that there is an occuring issue right now.

Always fix the EPC issue as soon as possible. When the light is on, it means there may be several limited functions in your car.

Since the EPC is integrated with the steering and brake system, it could cause engine damage and cause serious accidents because of limited brake or steering functions.

When this light appears on your dashboard, drive to the closest mechanic workshop for them to consider it as soon as possible.

The EPC light is often limiting your car’s engine power and other functions to drive slowly to the closest mechanic workshop without issues.

Usually, the EPC issue won’t cause damages to your car if you are driving carefully – but maybe the problem is more serious, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

What Is the EPC Light on a Volkswagen or Audi?

The EPC warning light on your Volkswagen or Audi means there is a problem with the EPC (Electric Power Control) system. The EPC system controls the throttle control, including the throttle body, accelerator pedal, cruise control, or traction control

Can the EPC Warning Light Cause a Loss of Power?

Yes, the EPC warning light controls the throttle system and can therefore cause a sudden loss of power. Sometimes, you can not rev up the engine at all when the light appears.

How much does it cost to fix the EPC light?

There is no fixed price to fix the EPC light because different things can cause it. Usually, it will cost anything between $ to $ to fix the EPC light, but it can be more expensive sometimes.

How do I fix my EPC light?

To fix the VW EPC light, you need to read the trouble codes with an OBD2 scanner. Once you know what the trouble codes are telling you, you need to continue the troubleshooting with these codes. Just guessing the problem will only waste your money.

Your Volkswagen Tiguan’s Electronic Power Control (EPC) light is a warning light that indicates that there is trouble with one of the critical safety and engine components of your vehicle.  These components include the gas pedal, traction control, cruise, ABS, steering system, and the throttle body.

If you get the EPC light, we recommend taking your Tiguan in right away.  Many issues associated with this warning light coming on have to do with vital vehicular systems.  When the EPC light comes on, your vehicle may have limited engine power.  The EPC system does this as a failsafe in order to protect the engine from permanent damage.  Whether or not this happens at all is dependent upon what is actually causing the light to come on.

The EPC light is often accompanied by the ESP light.  The ESP system is responsible for controlling your Tiguan&#;s traction control and stability systems.  When you clear the EPC light, it&#;ll often clear the ESP light as well, since the ESP system relies on the EPC data.

Volkswagen Tiguan EPC Light Causes

There are many different issues that can cause your Tiguan&#;s EPC light to turn on.  That&#;s why it&#;s so important to get its engine diagnostic data.  We cover how to do that in the next section.  If the light is on there will be trouble codes associated with it.  These trouble codes will usually tell you that there is a problem with one (or more) of these systems:

Throttle System

Often the EPC light will come on due to a throttle body failure.  Or, the throttle position sensor may have gone bad.  If your VW Tiguan is not reading how much gas you are giving it, or if it can&#;t respond to the fuel pedal, you&#;ll get the EPC light.

Brake/ABS System

Your Tiguan&#;s braking system is a complicated system of sensors and physical brake parts that help keep your vehicle stable.  If one of them goes bad, you&#;ll get the EPC light.

The most common brake related issues are a bad ABS sensor, a bad ABS Ring, wiring issues, or the brake pedal switch.

Steering

If the power steering is out, or is about to go out, it&#;ll trigger the EPC light.  Also, there is a steering wheel sensor that can go bad in a lot of modern VW&#;s.

VW Tiguan EPC Light Fix

Volkswagen Tiguan EPC Light Diagnosis

As you can see above, there are a lot of different issues that can cause the EPC light.  Just blindly guessing what might be wrong based on this information is not the way to go.  There is a better way.

Just like with any other major vehicle problem, you&#;re going to want to get a reading of your Tiguan&#;s diagnostic trouble codes.  You can use a good code scanner, or you can take it to the local parts store and see if they will scan it for you.  Most of them do.

You&#;ll want to scan the transmission control unit, ABS control unit, ECU, and steering control.  If you do opt to purchase a code scanner, just be aware that the cheaper ones only read the ECU.  That&#;s fine most of the time, but the problem causing the EPC light in your VW could be in one of the other control units.

Once you get the trouble codes, just hop back on Google and type in VW Tiguan with the trouble code and there should be all you need to begin the repair process.  We hope you make it brings you back here.  Even more than that though, we really hope you get what you need to get back on the road again.

Can You Drive Your Tiguan with the EPC Light?

We strongly recommend against driving your VW Tiguan with the EPC light.  The light is on to warn you that vital vehicular systems are having problems.  If your VW will even drive at all, it&#;s only meant to help you &#;limp&#; into the Volkswagen dealership or mechanic to get a repair.

The EPC light is so ingrained with your Volkswagen&#;s vehicular systems that it is a significant risk to drive with it on.  It is very likely that you don&#;t have ABS anymore or that the steering has been compromised.

Driving with the EPC light on almost never does any damage to the vehicle itself.  So, if you are on the road you should be very careful driving it to the shop, but you shouldn&#;t need to pull over and get a tow.  But, if your VW just feels right to drive, trust your gut and get the tow.

Conclusion

Driving your Tiguan with the EPC light on is dangerous.  We don&#;t recommend it.  It is integrated with almost every one of your VW&#;s major systems.  Take it in for repair as soon as possible.  If there is anything that you would like to add, or any questions about your VW&#;s EPC light, please leave a comment below.  Good Luck!
