Dragon Ball's Most Powerful Being, Grand Zeno the Omni-King, Explained

Grand Zeno is a god among gods, and while he doesn't have fighting technique or combat training, he remains Dragon Ball's ultimate powerhouse.

Grand Zeno is the Omni King of the entire multiverse, and Dragon Ball's most powerful being. Zeno is a childlike god who has no real combat skill, and is instead simply the embodiment of raw and unparalleled power, making any kind of combat knowledge irrelevant. Though Zeno doesn't fight in the traditional sense, he is responsible for the deaths, or rather un-existences, of countless beings across multiple universes, including one of Goku's most formidable and sinister foes.

Zeno made his first appearance in the Dragon Ball Super manga titled 'The Winning Universe Is Decided!' by Akira Toriyama. In that storyline, Universe 7 within the Dragon Ball multiverse (which is the universe in which Goku and the other Z-Fighters reside) has a tournament with Universe 6. When the tournament ends, Grand Zeno himself appears at the ring and declares that there will be an even greater tournament to come with all twelve universes competing against each other - an event that would soon be known as the Tournament of Power.

When Zeno first reveals himself to Universes 6 and 7, Goku immediately introduces himself, shaking hands with the god of the multiverse, much to Lord Beerus' concern. Zeno takes a liking to Goku, as the two share the same childlike outlook, seeing a potential friend in the Saiyan warrior. Some time later, Zeno contacts Beerus to bring Goku to the god-king's palace. Beerus does as requested and Goku appears before Grand Zeno, who gives him a special button that can transport Zeno to wherever Goku is; an advantage that soon thereafter saves Goku's life.

When battling Goku Black in Future Trunks' alternate timeline, Goku and Vegeta are on the verge of losing the fight along with the future world. Goku Black and the evil Kai of the tenth universe, who are technically the same being, merge bodies and become absolutely unstoppable. Just when all hope seems lost, Goku presses the button Zeno gave him, and a second later Zeno appears and helps Goku in his fight by obliterating the entire alternate future timeline, including Goku Black. Since this was an alternate version of Zeno from a now-defunct timeline, Goku asked if he wanted to tag along back to the present rather than live in an endless void. Future Zeno agreed, and from that point on the entirety of the Dragon Ball multiverse was run by two Zenos instead of one. But Zeno isn't always so affable. While in Goku's time there are twelve universes within the Dragon Ball multiverse, there used to be eighteen. Zeno erased six universes from existence before briefly settling on twelve, later considering eliminating even more universes before giving them a chance to win their survival in the Tournament of Power.

While Zeno seems cruel and capricious, he isn't a being of evil by any stretch of the word. Once Universe 7 won the Tournament of Power, the wish that was granted through the Super Dragon Ball was for every universe eliminated within the tournament to be brought back, which was Zeno's plan from the beginning. It was even revealed that any winning universe that didn’t make that wish would be obliterated, while the other universes would be brought back anyway.

Dragon Ball has always been concerned with characters growing more powerful, which means that the nature of its ultimate being has a lot to say about the franchise as a whole. Zeno is power without skill, filled with childlike wonder rather than vicious scheming. At once kind and irresponsible, unpredictable but true to his word, he's the perfect god for the Dragon Ball multiverse fans know and love. Having spent time with heroes like Goku and villains like Frieza, it's no surprise to learn that Dragon Ball's most powerful being, Grand Zeno, is basically a celestial child who likes smashing his toys together.

Occupation

Ruler of Existence

Grand Zeno (全王,Zen’ō, lit. "King of All"), the Omni-King,[1] is the supreme ruler of all the Multiverse and seemingly its most powerful being. Since the events of the "Future" Trunks Saga, Zeno co-rules jointly with his future counterpart.

Appearance

Zeno is very short and small, with a rather large oval-shaped head. He primarily has sky blue skin, except for two sections from his ears to the middle of each eye on both sides of his head, which are purple. He has small round eyes, and small rounded grey "ears". His main attire is a magenta and yellow lined coat, with yellow pants and magenta shoes. He wears a black and white shirt underneath, with the kanji for "all" (全) on the front. He typically has a blank expression on his face.

Personality

Like many deities, such as the angels, Zeno seems to have a general indifference about life, as well as all the other stuff within the multiverse, having destroyed six of the eighteen universes after a bout of anger, and also destroying several planets in a game he played with his future self 202 times. In the manga version of the Universe Survival Saga, however, it is implied by Grand Minister that the real reason why he destroyed the aforementioned six universes was simply to get rid of what he felt were too many universes. He apparently wished to decrease that number further for some time, giving no excuses for such a decision beyond saying 12 universes are a bit too much to keep track of, with the Tournament of Power being the perfect opportunity to do so. Even more, this indifference seems to extend to the gods themselves, seemingly rendering him a remorseless being to his peers, and was shown to not even be affected by Roh's horrified crying out of his name. He also shows some degree of sadism, as shortly after erasing Universe 9, he proceeded alongside his future counterpart to say "bye-bye!" in a joking tone, as well as being heard laughing childishly while erasing the universe. He and his counterpart also said "squish" in a light-hearted, delighted tone when they were erasing Universe 3. Furthermore, he seems to be incapable of understanding the horrible action of erasing trillions of lives, since he and his future counterpart wonder why everyone in the Tournament of Power stops fighting after witnessing an entire universe getting erased.

In spite of all this, Zeno and his future counterpart, at least in the anime, showed wisdom worthy of supreme beings, as the Grand Minister revealed that both of them intended the tournament prize, the wish of the Super Dragon Balls, to be used for an incredible virtuous act (e.g. like restoring all the erased universes as it was the case). But if the wish was to be an egotistical one (e.g. riches, power, etc.), all existence would have been erased, including the exempt universes as that would have meant that the winning universe was no better than the erased ones and that the exempt were no more worthy of existing than the others. At the same time, Zeno is also shown to be flexible, tolerant, and even willing to go back on his word on occasion. For example, he accepted Bergamo's proposal to rescind universal destruction were he to win against Goku, despite his earlier decision. He condoned Top's challenge to Goku as an additional fourth match to be witnessed, despite the end of the Zeno Expo. His flexibility, combined with his childish tendencies, also prompts Zeno to permit what otherwise would be rule violations in the Tournament of Power, such as permitting the Evil Containment Wave and use of the Potara earrings. However, he does have limits to what he can tolerate. He immediately erased Frost when he tried to attack from outside the ring, and then threatening Universe 6's erasure to ensure it does not happen again.

It is possible that Zeno is lonely, as almost nobody knows of his existence, and those who do fear his power, proving a barrier to friendship, as his attendants wait on him hand and foot and the Grand Minister only treated him as if he is royalty, blithely following his orders without question. To this end, he does not seem to have a problem with physical contact, even with strangers, as seen when he is unbothered by Goku's lively handshake. When his future counterpart gets hugged by Goku, he likewise seems unfazed. His penchant for physical contact with Goku is likely a result of how surgical and formal people are around him, leaving him feeling somewhat starved for companionship.

Zeno is also noted for having taken an immediate liking to Goku due to the Saiyan's often similar childlike, innocent, and naive personality in addition to his tendency to get easily excited about things he finds are out of the ordinary. He can be swayed easily by a good fight, as seen from his interest in setting up a tournament after witnessing Goku's fight against Hit. His interest in Goku extended to allowing him to talk directly to him and shake his hand to the point of lifting the small deity off the ground. Zeno has even gone as far as to ask the Saiyan to become his friend, and to have Goku give him the nickname "Zenny." He prefers Goku to speak plainly, and is unappreciative of (to the point of threatening) those who fear him attempting to speak in Goku's place with what they believe he wants to hear, appreciating the Saiyan's unconventional approach to life and finding his informal and friendly demeanor to be refreshing after countless eons of being feared and skirted around by his subjects and attendants.

Though Beerus claims that Goku's friendship with Zeno is the equivalent of measly entertainment for the all-powerful being, the Omni-King is seen to truly value his friendship with him. He was grateful for Goku's suggestion to Present Zeno to be friends with his future timeline counterpart, thereby giving the King of All a friend that is truly his peer and equal in every respect; that is, one who truly understands him. In addition, Zeno was shown to consistently be worried whenever Goku came close to losing the tournament, such as almost falling out of the ring with Nink and admitting that the Saiyan's universe losing would make him "very sad". Even more notably, Zeno showed deep concern when he thought Goku was killed by his own spirit bomb during his fight with Jiren and was visibly very unhappy about pushing the button to eliminate him, which he started to do quite slowly; a hesitation he and his counterpart had previously not done with anyone else. In addition, to the point of near-tears, he was overjoyed when Goku survived and expressed his admiration for his new power and "sparkly" appearance. This was echoed again during his fight with Kefla. Finally, at the end of the Tournament of Power, Zeno and his future counterpart expressed great joy to Goku when Universe 7 wins the tournament, clearly happy that they did not have to erase the only other true friend they have and making it very clear that they wanted to see him again, parting with the Saiyan via a playful fist pump.

Nevertheless, Goku is not the only one Zeno and Future Zeno seem to respect and admire, or, at the very least, find agreeable. Throughout the first match of the Zen Exhibition Match, they seem to take a liking to Buu's nature as well, since he is goofy, high-spirited, childish, and playful, much like the Kings of All. The Zenos also have an appreciation for Jiren, referring to him as cool and even imitating him at times. They also show admiration for Gohan despite never referring to him by name in the anime (calling him "Goku's son", much like Beerus), becoming excited when he turned Super Saiyan to fight Lavender and calling him "the coolest" when he fought Dyspo. They have also consistently voiced their fascination with Vegeta and his prideful, powerful approach to combat.

Ultimately, due to this childish and naive nature driving Zeno to often make impulsive and irresponsible decisions, and despite having everything under his whim, the Grand Minister is usually the one who handles the more responsible matters the most, along with the one who controls a large portion of Zeno's authority himself, hereby making him somewhat of his grand vizier.

Biography

Background

At some point in time, Zeno destroyed 6 of the then-existing 18 universes. In the manga, Zeno held an All Universe Hide and Seek Tournament, but when Beerus hid and fell asleep for fifty years during the tournament, it had to be cancelled. Zeno, who was enjoying the event, became furious and had to be calmed down by the gods from the 11 universes.

Zeno watches the Tournament of Destroyers from a distance away of the Nameless Planet. After the tournament concludes, Champa is angry that his team lost and prepares to destroy them while Beerus desperately warns Goku that he can't beat Champa yet. However, Zeno and his attendants arrive on the Nameless Planet in the ring, which prevents Beerus and Champa from doing so, as he along with Beerus are completely mortified and shocked by Zeno's presence. He states that his reason for visiting was out of concern that Beerus and Champa were shirking their duties as Gods of Destruction. Asking how Beerus and Champa were doing in their jobs, Whis informs him that Beerus focuses more on sleeping and consuming food, and Vados notes that Champa completely obsesses over food and all of the sweets that result in him being fat, and whatever food Vados serves Champa, he says it is awful.

Goku attempts to meet Zeno, but Zeno's attendants shield the king from him. Zeno allows Goku to speak to him, and even shakes hands with Goku after a long pause when the latter offers his hand. After shaking hands with Goku, Zeno returns home via his attendants.

"Future" Trunks Saga

Main article: "Future" Trunks Saga

While Beerus and Whis are at their temple, Beerus is waiting for his food when a call comes through. Beerus answers it, telling the caller to call another time, yet is immediately shocked and terrified to see his caller is Zeno, and repenting his tone, immediately bows to him, accidentally breaking his table with his head in the process, and asks him how his day has been, thanking him for taking the time out of his schedule to call him. Zeno asks Beerus and Whis to have Goku meet him, much to the divine duo's shock and uneasiness.

As he was told, Beerus orders Whis to take Goku to Zeno's place together with Shin. Zeno happily greets Goku and asks him to be his friend, since everyone else was too afraid of his power to effectively socialize with. When Goku seemed to hesitate, Shin desperately interrupts, saying Goku would be happy to oblige, but Zeno orders him to be silent and allows Goku to answer for himself. Agreeing to be his friend, Goku tells Zeno to just call him by his name and, in return, Goku will call him "Zenny," to the shock of those present. After Goku promises to bring him a friend even more fun than himself after he settles his business on earth, Zeno gives Goku a button. If Goku presses it, the Omni-King will come right to him.

After Fused Zamasu and the future timeline's world are destroyed and erased, Goku and Future Trunks return using Cell's Time Machine. There they find an empty cyan void with Future Zeno floating in the emptiness. They decide to take that timeline's Zeno to the present so that he and his present timeline counterpart can be friends.

After arriving at Present Zeno's palace, Zeno rushes to see but is met with surprise at his future counterpart. At Goku's suggestion, the two decide to play with both being happy to have finally found a friend.

Universe Survival Saga

Main article: Universe Survival Saga Some time after the defeat of Zamasu, Zeno and his future counterpart are visited by Goku, who reminds the former of the tournament promised to the Saiyan after the conclusion of the previous tournament. The Zenos agree to hold the event, much to Goku's delight. The prize for the winner are the Super Dragon Balls, much like the contest between Champa and Beerus before. However, the Tournament of Power has a dire rule: all of the universes defeated in it are to be erased by the ruling duo.

Before the Tournament of Power is held, however, Future Zeno requests his present counterpart host a preliminary tournament to raise his expectations for the upcoming all-universe event. Their servant, the Grand Minister, willing obliges and has both Universe 7 and Universe 9 gather three warriors each to compete in the contest. The former universe picks Good Buu, Gohan, and Goku to compete, while the latter selects the Trio of Danger, a fearsome trio of lupine siblings: Basil, Lavender, and Bergamo.

Above an arena materialized specifically for the matches, on the Null Realm, all of the gods, the Supreme Kais, Gods of Destruction and Angels, as well as the Zenos and theirattendants gather to spectate the matches, with the rules being laid out soon thereafter.

The fights are then determined, with Buu fighting Basil, Gohan fighting Lavender, and Goku fighting Bergamo, and they then watch the first clash, between Basil and Majin Buu, with the latter coming out as the victor. They then watch the next match between Gohan and Lavender with the battle ending in a draw after both collapsed. The two versions of Zeno are shown amazed by the fights even allowing any underhanded moves to go since they will determine the rules for the actual tournament. Their decision is enforced by the Grand Minister who glares at an agitated Beerus to settle him down.

Before the final exhibition match, Bergamo pleads to Zeno to relinquish the destruction of the Universes if one team loses. Though they state they have made their decision, they would allow it if Bergamo wins in his battle against Goku. During Goku's battle with Bergamo, Future Zeno is surprised by the power of Super Saiyan Blue as his counterpart explains it to him. The two are amazed when Goku enters Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken and defeats Bergamo easily upholding the decision to destroy the losing universes. After the battle ends, Top of Universe 11 challenges Goku as the two Zenos are surprised but allow the match between the two fighters. They are amazed by the battle and are eager with anticipation as the fighters prepare to go all out but Grand Minister ends the match to their disappointment until they hear the fighters need to conserve their power for the actual tournament.

When the Tournament of Power arena was completed in the World of Void, Zeno and Future Zeno looked in awe and decided to play and massage on the arena. Thanking the Grand Minister, Zeno gave him a piece of candy, much to the Minister's delight. During the tournament, both Zenos watch in amazement at the battle. They also possess GodPads, tablet devices, which they use to keep track of which warriors have been eliminated.

After Goku and Vegeta finish off Team Universe 9, Zeno and Future Zeno make good on their word and erased all of Universe 9 with the exception of Mohito.

When the combatants of the remaining universes stopped fighting, shocked by the erasure of Universe 9, the Zenos were puzzled as to why they had stopped fighting.

After all of Team Universe 10 is defeated, Zeno and Future Zeno erased all of Universe 10 with the exception of Kusu.

Later on, when Frieza had eliminated Frost, Zeno erased the latter as he was preparing to fire a Chaos Beam at Frieza from the sidelines. He did so declaring that such an action was against the rules and threatened Team Universe 6 that he'd erase Universe 6 entirely if they do it again.

After both Team Universe 2 and Team Universe 6 were defeated, the two Zenos promptly erased both Universes 2 and 6, with the exceptions of Sour and Vados, respectively. Later, after Team Universe 4 and Team Universe 3 were defeated, the Zenos erased Universe 4 and 3 (except Cognac and Camparri) as well.

In the anime it is stated by the Grand Minister that Zeno foresaw the outcome of a virtuous being winning the tournament of power who would selflessly wish on the Super Dragon Balls. It is also stated by Grand Minister that Zeno would otherwise have erased all universes if the winner had wished for selfish reasons as this would have shown that the winning universe was no better than the erased ones. The two Zeno's joyfully fly to Goku and engage him in their handshake, praising him for his performance in the tournament and thanking him for his role in making it happen. Before Goku and friends return home, Zeno asked if they would ever see him again which Goku assures him he will before sharing a fist pump. In the manga none of this occurs.

As punishment for all of the trouble caused by Beerus, Whis and Shin during the conflict involving Moro. The Grand Minister places a penalty on the three which involves them having to play with and look after the Zeno in order to give their attendants some much needed time off. The Zeno are showing riding on Beerus and Shins back playing horsey, spurring them on to go even faster.

Zeno appears after Hearts has been defeated, blissfully unaware of the events that had transpired and is shown playing a game of hide and seek with Future Zeno, Beerus and Champa.

Power

Anime & Manga

According to Beerus, Zeno does not fight. He also does not seem to possess good fighting senses compared to the other deities, as he was incapable of keeping track of the fight between the Gods of Destruction in the manga. He was also unable to observe Dyspo's great speed, requiring slow motion function in his GodPad, while Vados was in fact capable of keeping up with Dyspo's speed. However, in at least the anime, he still had some heightened senses, as he managed to erase Frost seconds before he could fire a Death Beam at Frieza as revenge for the latter forcing him out of the ring.

However, Zeno, alongside Future Zeno, are the only characters known to use Erase, making them them two of the most powerful characters in Dragon Ball Super.

Whis states that nobody in this world is greater than Zeno, as the King of All has the power to instantly wipe out anything (or everything) in the blink of an eye without any effort, including individual people, planets, galaxies, and even universes. If he so wished, he could erase all existence, which Future Zeno did during "Future" Trunks Saga. According to Whis, there were originally 18 universes before Zeno destroyed 6 of them when he was in an "unpleasant mood".

His power was such that he could even effortlessly erase people who had been granted immortality via the Super Dragon Balls, as demonstrated by his future self with Infinite Zamasu in both the manga and anime.

For this reason, Zeno's mere presence would casually terrify all other deities and cause them to immediately bow before him out of fear and respect. In fact, in the manga, the Infinite Zamasus are shown to be terrified of Zeno like all other deities.

Additionally, Zeno cannot be defeated. Even when Goku Black and Future Zamasu killed all the other gods of Future Trunks' timeline, Shin — with no hesitation — assures that Zeno is still alive, noting that no matter what, the Omni-King cannot be killed, with Whis making a similar claim when Goku brought cabbages to his and Beerus' world. This was later proven with his future counterpart, where the latter was still alive, despite wiping the future.

In the manga, both Zenos were completely unaffected by Rumsshi's Battle Roar which causes the Supreme Kais to faint and paralyzes the Gods of Destruction.

Super Dragon Ball Heroes

It is stated by Hearts that Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta has enough power to defeat Zeno.

In World Mission, Grand Minister states that his power doesn't compare to Zeno.

Techniques and Special Abilities

  • Flight - The ability to take flight; either by ki or magic.
  • Zeno Jump - A pose where Zeno jumps and stands on his left tiptoe with his left hand outstretched as if waving. Used in the Yoka Yoka Dance ending of Dragon Ball Super. Its name is rendered as Zen-Oh Jump in Xenoverse 2.
  • Erase - The ability to destroy anything with one or two balls of blue magical energy. This includes immortal beings and entire universes since it eliminates every single trace of any entity, both material and immaterial. This power is by far the strongest and deadliest technique in the series.
  • Immortality: It is heavily implied in both anime and manga that Zeno are completely immortal. Shin stated that Zeno is completely unkillable (which was later proved correct as he survived the destruction of an entire multiverse) and is ruling the multiverse since possibly millions of years (According to the Grand Minister, the Tournament of Power begins on the "3,135,500,603rd day of the Era of Our King" which is over eight and a half million years.)
  • Magic Materialization - For Goku to easily contact or summon Zeno, the King of All was able to produce a handy button on his palm in an instant.
  • Mimicry - The coveted ability to copy another fighter's technique after seeing it used only once.
  • Yacchaina Fist - Emulating Rozie, Zeno and Future Zeno utilize the attack on each other when playing.
  • Kamehameha - After witnessing Goku's Kamehameha, Zeno and Future Zeno imitated the attack.

Equipment

  • Zeno's Button - A teleportation device that would summon Zeno or Future Zeno to the location the user is at. On the other side there is another button where the user will be transported to Zeno. Given to Goku.
  • Zeno Orb - Mechanical Zeno heads with propellers for flying used by Zeno to observe battles in Dragon Ball Heroes and World Mission.

Video Game Appearances

Zeno makes his debut appearance as a playable/support-type character in Dragon Ball Heroes, introduced in SDBH Mission 1 as a summon for Goku. Zeno received a playable card in SDBH Mission 6.

Additionally a special type of battle called Zen-Oh Orb Battle was introduced in Universe Mission 1 where Zen-Oh watches the battle through a Zen-Oh Orb.

"Clothing worn by Zen-Oh, the king of all gods with the power to erase universes in an instant."
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2Zen-Oh's Clothes description

In Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, his name is rendered as Zen-Oh and he is referenced by the Emotes Option 68: Zen-Oh Jump. Additionally, Zen-Oh's Clothes appear as a Raid Quest completion reward. Alternatively, after unlocking Whis' Special Costume, Whis will randomly give out pieces of Zen-Oh's Clothes when the Future Warrior gives him Gift (Whis). As he is stated to be the ruler of all gods he is effectively Chronoa's superior which is implied to be the main reason Future Zeno was able to take up residence in the main timeline as he was beyond Chronoa's even authority and she likely would not want to interfere the counterparts' friendship knowing full well it is never wise to upset Zeno.

As part of the Super Pack 4 DLC in the Warrior of Hope Saga, Zeno's Button plays an important role in the plot.

As part of the Extra Pack 4 DLC, the Tournament of Power Arena stage has a special feature where Zeno and Future Zeno will provide commentary when the stage is selected in offline or online battle. They only appear as a dialog box portrait and voice. Their commentary is not present when fighting on the stage during Parallel Quests or Photo Mode. Additionally, they can be seen as 2D textures sitting on their throne far in the background.

As part of the 1.15 update, a CC Mascot modelled after Zeno can be obtained either as a Raid Battle reward or bought in the TP Medal shop. Mascot Zeno comes in three different colours along with his default, with one colour scheme being modelled after the Grand Minister. When summoned and alongside an idle player, Mascot Zeno will either roll end over end, fly around the player or perform Erase. If a Time Patroller uses the Kamehameha emote, Mascot Zeno will mimic them.

In Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission, Zen-Oh appears as a Special Type Card and through the CAA Super Ability Zen-Oh Appears S of Goku (SSGSS)'s SH1-29 card that allows him to summon Zen-Oh from Subspace to reduce the enemy team's STA. The Zen-Oh Orb Battle battle type is also present in the game.

Besides his appearance in the Story Events, Zeno can also appear in Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle as one of the possible summon animations where he guarantees a new character on the banner that the player summoned

Trivia

  • According to the Grand Minister, the Tournament of Power begins on the "3,135,500,603rd day of the Era of Our King".[2] If these are 24-hour days, this would imply Zeno has been the King of All for approximately 8.6 million years.
  • The symbol on his shirt may be a word play on his overall name, since the word "king" (王, ō) is also contained in the word "all" (全, zen).
  • His name "Zeno" sounds very similar to the word zennō (全能), which is Japanese for "almighty".
  • In Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, there is a pose referred to as "Zen-Oh Jump" which appears to be the pose Zeno makes in the Yoka Yoka Dance ending theme.
  • When Goku first met Future Zeno, he named the Omni-King in a respective manner (Zeno Sama

Dragon Ball Super: Everything We Know About the Omni-King, Grand Zeno

Despite Goku's and Vegeta's outrageous leaps in strength in Dragon Ball Super, they are still spiky-haired larvae compared to the absolute power of the child king who rules over all of creation. Grand Zeno, also known as the Omni-King, is the single most powerful being in all of Dragon Ball.

His name, Zeno, is similar to the Japanese word for "almighty," an appropriate name indeed as he has displayed the ability to kill immortal beings and survive the destruction of an entire universe without harm. The Omni-King remains largely shrouded in mystery, but here is everything that's been revealed about him thus far.

RELATED: Dragon Ball: How Piccolo Became the Franchise’s Universal Father Figure

It is not known where Zeno came from or how he became the Omni-King. The closest thing to an explanation regarding his past is the Grand Priest's declaration that the Tournament of Power would begin on the 3,135,500,603rd day of Zeno's rule, which equates to approximately 8.5 million years. Assuming the Dragon Ball multiverse is older than that, it would mean there was a time in which Zeno was not the Omni-King, potentially implying he appeared one day and seized power.

This would provide additional context to his role now, as Zeno does not appear involved in the creation of life, nor does he even seem to care about life in the first place. After all, there used to be 18 universes that made up the multiverse -- until Zeno destroyed six of them because he was in a foul mood. However, it has also been suggested he really did so to reduce the size of the multiverse and make it easier to manage. He was considering doing this again by eliminating another eight of the weaker universes until he had the idea to hold a tournament instead, which would allow one winning universe to survive.

Zeno's childlike behavior makes him difficult to understand. The Supreme Kai and Gods of Destruction quake with fear in his presence, and even the Angels treat him with formal respect. Meanwhile, Goku approaches him without bowing, tosses him around, and calls him Zen-chan or Zenny, unknowingly putting the entire cosmos in danger if Zeno takes the slightest offense to Goku's behavior. Ironically, this makes him take an immediate liking to the clueless Saiyan.

RELATED: Is Goku the REAL Villain of Dragon Ball Super?

Ruling the multiverse with an iron fist appears to be a lonely job, as Zeno has expressed dissatisfaction with the reverence people show him. He even threatens Shin when the Supreme Kai attempts to speak on Goku's behalf in order to avoid possibly offending Zeno. True to his childlike nature, Zeno wants to have a friend, not a subordinate like Beerus who slams his own head through a table while bowing down to him.

Other than Goku and the Future Zeno brought back from Trunks' timeline as a playmate, only the Grand Priest seems able to act without fear in the presence of the Omni-King. Zeno appears very fond of him, heeding his advice and rewarding him with candy for a job well done. Zeno has even threatened his own guards for trying to protect him from Goku's approach, so his bond with the Grand Priest -- one of the few beings he has never intimidated into submission -- appears genuine.

Despite his behavior, Zeno appears to take his position in Dragon Ball Super seriously and will replace Gods of Destruction if he feels they are not properly performing their duties. He even foresaw the Tournament of Power's outcome, knowing the winning warrior would be virtuous enough to show compassion for the universes Zeno had destroyed. However, Zeno is also a realist, in that he was prepared to end all of reality if mortals had proven him wrong and made a selfish wish on the Super Dragon Balls. It's a good thing Android 17 changed his mind about that boat.

Dragon Ball Super: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Zeno

There are a lot of overpowered characters in the Dragon Ball series. Planet busting aliens, galaxy-destroying gods of destruction, universe-shaking angels. And then there is Zeno, the guy who makes all these beings look like ants. Zeno is basically the god of the Dragon Ball multiverse, the Omni-King, and the supreme ruler of everything that ever was is or will be.

RELATED: Dragon Ball Z: 10 Differences Between The Anime And The Manga

With such a fearsome character, it's easy to get overawed. But Zeno has the disposition of a sweet child, at least when he is not consigning entire worlds to their doom. Here are 10 little known facts about the most powerful being Dragon Ball has to offer:

10 His Name Has A Meaning

If a newcomer to the series ever saw Zeno and wondered how powerful he can be, his name alone will give you a hint. The name Zeno is very similar to the Japanese word Zenno. And that word quite literally means 'Almighty'.

So his name itself is telling you that this is not some random Dragonball character, but rather the supreme deity in all of creation, and the one father-figure who is above all else.

9 A Figurehead

As powerful as Zeno is, he is also childish and easily bored. Not really the best candidate to rule over all of creation.

That is why Zeno consigns all his duties to his grand priest, who employs a set of angels, who are in charge of training the Gods of Destruction, who in turn are the superiors of the lower gods who look after the day-to-day upkeep of all of creation. And that is how Zeno gets to delegate all responsibility and spend his time playing and relaxing.

8 One-Punch Man

Saitama AKA the superhero whose power is to defeat any opponent with a single punch has become popular based on his ridiculously overpowered strength. And yet Saitama is nothing compared to the Omni-king. Zeno can and does, destroy the entire multiverse in a single instant.

RELATED: One Punch Man: 5 Anime Protagonists Saitama Would Get Along With (& 5 He Would Hate)

All of reality, everything that existed anywhere, simply wiped out because Zeno willed it to be so. There is no single entity in anime who is more powerful than Zeno, and he is the true One-punch guy.

7 Wiser Than He Looks

Zeno is often depicted as a childish, immature brat who would wipe out a universe if he was upset. But later events showed that despite acting like a kid, Zeno has a strong sense of right and wrong, and he created the tournament of power as a test of character of the contestants.

Ultimately, Zeno was banking on the tournament champion using his final wish to bring back all the destroyed universes since that would be the only moral thing to do. If the champion had attempted to use his wish for any selfish reason, Zeno would have destroyed all of reality as punishment, regardless of which universe had won.

6 Not A Good Fighter

Zeno is possibly the only significant character in the series who is not a fighter of any kind and has no interest or experience in martial training. He was unable to follow Dypso's faster-than-light attacks and sees the tournament as something to amuse him through its drama rather than a test of warrior skill.

It is ironic that the most powerful warriors and gods and angels with the highest feats of martial training are utterly powerless against the short round Omni-King who can simply blink them out of existence.

5 He Has Limits

With such a staggeringly powerful character, who terrifies everyone who meets him, even the gods of destruction, it is difficult to think he has any limits to his power. And yet, Zeno has shown that he is not exactly omnipotent. He was not fast enough to keep track of Dypso's attacks during the tournament.

RELATED: Dragon Ball: 10 Rematches We'd Love To See

After destroying Zamasu and the entire multiverse in the future, Zeno was unable to create a new reality and simply existed in limbo until Goku brought him back to the present. Now whether these limitations are because Zeno has finite abilities or because he simply does not care enough to do more, for all practical purposes, they show the limits of Zeno's power.

4 He Had A beginning

Zeno being the king above all else would logically mean that he has been the God-king forever. And yet, it seems that is not the case. The Grand Minister once stated that the Tournament of Power began 8.5 million years after the reign of Zeno began.

That means there was a point, millions of years ago when Zeno was not the Onmi-king. Does that mean Zeno's position is a temporary one? Were there other Omni-kings before him?

3 Highest Kill Count

There are a lot of characters in Dragonball who have wreaked great destruction. Frieza conquered planets and killed millions. Beerus decimated civilizations that displeased him. And yet, neither of those feats come close to Zeno's, who erased literally all of reality and everything in it in the future to stop Zamasu.

While others kill counts factor in the millions or billions, Zeno's kill count simply includes... everyone and everything that exists in the future.

2 Not Actually The Most Powerful

So far we've talked about how Zeno is incredibly powerful. And yet he is still not the most powerful. That credit goes to Tori-Bot, the in-universe representation of the series creator Akira Toriyama.

While the Tori-Bot is mostly used as a gag character, it is officially the strongest character in Dragon Ball, being the creator and preserver of the series, who can wipe anyone or anything from existence simply by nott drawing them or making any of the characters, including Zeno, do anything it wants simply by drawing the action into canon. At the end of the day, Zeno is simply a fictional character, and the Tori-Bot is the be-all-end-all of the fictional multiverse he inhabits.

1 The Loneliest God

While Zeno commands fear and respect from everyone who meets him, friends are incredibly hard to come by. That is why Zeno is so fond of Goku, the only one who treats him like a friend instead of a God-king.

It has been made clear that Zeno lives a very lonely life and yearns for companionship and entertainment. That is in a lot of ways the purpose of the Tournament of Power, to entertain Zeno and help him meet the strongest champions that the universes have to offer.

The absolute ruler of the multiverse, and the most powerful character in the whole franchise (unless you count Tori-Bot). He's smaller than Monaka and much cuter to boot, yet all Gods of Creation and Destruction are cowed in terror at the mere sound or sight of him.

    open/close all folders

     In General

  • Above the Gods: As the supreme being of the Dragon Ball multiverse, Zeno is in a tier above that of the standard gods like the Gods of Destruction and Supreme Kais.
  • The Ace: The most powerful being in the entire multiverse (unless Tori-Bot is counted), being able to destroy the multiverse easily if he wanted and has destroyed six universes in the past (to the point where the aforementioned God of Destruction is scared of him). Luckily for everyone, he's too chill to want to.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Downplayed. In the anime, the Grand Minister says that the whole Tournament of Power was a Secret Test of Character: if the winner wished for anything except restoring the destroyed universes, Zeno would destroy the winner's universe and the four non-participating universes (because mortals seemingly weren't capable of moral goodness, as a result). The manga doesn't state this, but whether this implies that a selfish wish would've still destroyed all remaining universes, or not, is left up to the individual reader due to lack of evidence for or against both. In both versions, Zeno approves of 17's wish, but in the anime he gives no further comment or reward, while in the manga he does bump up U7's mortal rating after they won.
  • Adorable Abomination: Despite being the supreme deity of the multiverse, looking rather alien, and possessing enough power to one shot the multiverse and survive unharmed, he's a cute, child-like entity and rather adorable.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: Is higher up on the cosmic food chain than Beerus and Champa, and his arrival is enough to scare both of them. Though Word of God indicates he's still weaker than Akira/Tori-Bot, mostly because Akira is Akira Toriyama's Author Avatar and could blink the Dragon Ball Universe out of existence. Zamasu learns this the hard way, as not even Complete Immortality granted by an unlimited power dragon is enough to prevent him from being wiped out by the absolute Top God.
  • Badass Adorable: He is extremely cute and also the most powerful being (excepted Tori-Bot) in whose mere presence can make even the other powerful gods have a Mass "Oh, Crap!".
  • Bad Powers, Good People: The power to erase anything is generally reserved for bad guys. Zeno, however, is a pretty childish yet benevolent being.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He is friendly, kind, and seemed very well-mannered. However, he can destroy the entire multiverse when angry. Whis said there used to be 18 Universes; Zeno wiped out 6 of them. In his second appearance he shows a hidden hostile side, giving threats of being destroyed to anyone that displeases him. Fusion Zamasu succeeds in well and truly enraging him, and is promptly obliterated with a multiverse buster. It gets taken even further in the Universe Survival Saga, where Zeno has the strongest fighters of the eight weaker universes compete in a tournament, with the penalty for losing being the destruction of their universe.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: On the one hand, he made friends with Goku pretty quickly, and he prevented Champa from destroying his fighters in a fit of rage, albeit unwittingly. He even enjoyed the tournament between Universes 6 and 7 so much that he wanted to host his own tournament between all universes just for the sake of entertainment while granting the winner one wish from the Super Dragon Balls. On the other hand, he destroyed six out of the original eighteen universes just because he was upset, and he will destroy all the losing universes in the Tournament of Power simply because of their low mortal level and Zeno felt there were too many universes. And then, it's revealed to all be a ruse and the entire Tournament was a Secret Test of Character for the winner. This "test" was frighteningly omitted from the manga, meaning that Zeno was perfectly willing to allow the winner of the universe any wish they wanted, no matter how selfish and at the expense of the other universes.
  • Complete Immortality: Implied; near the end of the Future Trunks Saga, when Goku wonders if Future Zeno survived Goku Black and Future Zamasu's genocide, Shin confirms he did, stating that no matter what, the Omni-King cannot be undone. Indeed, Future Zeno proceeds to destroy the entire future multiverse to get rid of Zamasu... and survives it.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist:
    • Zeno is a sharp contrast with Champa and Beerus in their respective arcs. For once, like Beerus, the Omni-King is doing his job by hosting the Tournament of Power and destroying universes, and can't be called evil. He also lacks Beerus' sadism. However, everybody calls on his Ambiguous Innocence.
    • Zeno also contrasts with the various forms of Zamasu. Both are deities and a threat to multiple universes, both are friends with their Alternate Self, but Zamasu was rogue and essentially Dragon Ball's equivalent of Lucifer, Zeno takes the role of Top God and has the power and position to do what he does. Neither saw themselves as evil and are pure in a way, but unlike Zamasu, Zeno genuinely doesn't know what he's doing is wrongdue to having a different moral code. Both have a Lack of Empathy, but Zamasu was a malignant psychopath who hated mortals, particularly those on god-tier strength, while Zeno is merely indifferent and seems amused by strong mortals and their fights. Also, while Zamasu despises Goku, Zeno considers him a friend and respects him for the same casual attitude he has with gods that enraged Zamasu. Last but not least, where Zamasu contemptibly prejudged mortals as being unworthy of life and embarked on a long and sinister scheme to eradicate all mortal life in the multiverse, Zeno believed in the virtue of mortals and orchestrated an 80-warrior team battle royal with universal annihilation as the stakes and a wish on the Super Dragon Balls as the winner's prize, either fully expecting that the last man standing would have enough empathy to restore every deleted universe instead of being selfish (anime) or not putting any grand notion into the wish at all but being pleased enough by the result to bump up the mortal rating of the winner's universe (manga).
  • Children Are Innocent: He may be the immortal God-Emperor, but he still physically appears as a young child and is just as naive as one would expect for that age. This is played for all the drama it can be.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: This trope is torn to shreds with Zeno. He's the absolute ruler of the entire multiverse, but in terms of personality and appearance he's basically a child. All he wants to do is play, and befriends Goku as the only being he's ever met who doesn't bow and scrape to him constantly. As stated prior and shown earlier with someone like Majin Buu, his childlike innocence and naivete is sometimes shown to be a really, really bad thing; having the power to destroy universes on a whim without the mental or emotional maturity to understand the weight of actually using it is a recipe for, shall we say... trouble.
  • The Dreaded: All the gods of destruction and Kais fear him and do their best not to get on his bad side as he can easily wipe out a universe if he felt likes it. Even Zamasu, both regular and as Goku Black, don't even dare try to challenge him in the manga incarnation of the "Goku Black Saga", instead futilely trying to run once he declares that universe too corrupted to continue existing.
  • Dissonant Serenity: He and his future self are as cheery as ever before and after wiping out an entire universe. Even Frieza is put off by their behavior, though admittedly because he felt their cheery personas were poorly juxtaposed to such atrocities. It turns out, however, that he anticipated the destruction of entire universes would not be permanent and all the destroyed universes would be revived at the end, so of course he did not give it too much weight. Not the case in the manga, though...
  • The Emperor: His title literally translate to "King of Everything" since he rules over all 12 universes. According to Whis, nothing stands above him.
  • Establishing Character Moment: You thought that Beerus and Whis explaining his power to destroy the multiverse was an Informed Ability, did you? His future self eliminated the immortal Zamasu's multiversal existence by his power alone. Even Goku knew when to get the hell out of dodge.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Both he and his future counterpart often stretch the rules of their own tournament to allow things that they find cool, but even they have their limits that they won't allow to be crossed. When Frost tries to blast Frieza after being eliminated, a clear act of cheating, Zeno immediately erases him and declares no attacking from outside the ring, and threatens to erase all of Universe 6 if it happens again.
  • Foil: Both of them are one to Zamasu. They believe that mortals have great potential and when it counts their capacity for good will win out. Like Zamasu (or maybe because they figured out what he was up to before Future Zeno erased him), they decide to put mortals to the test, though their method is significantly less crazy and sadistic.
  • God-Emperor: The supreme ruler of The Multiverse, and also a Top God.
  • God Is Evil: Subverted as his seemingly monstrous universe-erasing agenda ultimately turns out to be a Secret Test of Character showing that what he values most with mortals is their capability of showing empathy and working together to improve their states of living, albeit one carried out through extremely unorthodox methods that could easily have risked total annihilation provided the after-the-fact reveal that he would have erased absolutely everyone had the ultimate wish been misused was no joke. The manga version furthermore plays up his ambiguity more, as he couldn't care less what happens in the Multiverse, only caring more about his own entertainment.
    • There's also the matter of his stated past destruction of six additional universes for no reason relating to their own fault, but that's really only an issue if one cares about it more than theseries itself does.
  • God Is Neutral: Outside of occasionally interfering in what other gods are doing, Zeno only really serves as the Top God figure and leaves the actual running of things to the Grand Minister and angels/other gods.
  • The Gods Must Be Lazy: Zeno is technically the supreme ruler of all reality, but is never seen actually running things. In practice, he's more of a massive wildcard that the other gods conspire to appease so that he doesn't destroy one or more universes in a fit of pique. It turns out he does care about the betterment of each universe, he just wants the mortals (and their deities by extension) to better their universes without his help; one trait that remains constant in all his appearances is he is frustrated at any lack of improvement. This is more the case in the anime. The manga plays up his childishness and laziness more, as he was willing to wipe out the universes due to there being "too much".
  • Goo-Goo-Godlike: Despite being the supreme being in the multiverse, he looks and acts like a young child. Beerus states that his innocence is exactly why Zeno is so dangerous, as he's too innocent to know better. It later turns out he does understand concepts like good and evil, he just has been acting like he doesn't.
  • Guardian of the Multiverse: He rules over the entire multiverse and is the single most powerful being. So far, he appears to be the watcher type who doesn't interfere with the happenings of the different universes, although he does show concern when Champa and Beerus don't do their jobs.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Beerus, an entity who can cause Frieza of all people to grovel before him, practically shits his pants at the sight of Zeno. In the manga, even the endless Infinite Zamasu clones are terrified as soon as Future Zeno appears.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Future Zeno oneshots the entire future multiverse, literally destroying that entire timeline... and survives after it in a bright void. He looks like a bright-colored alien child.
  • Hypocrite: Ultimately subverted. A key reason he 'apparently' decides to destroy the losers of the Tournament of Power is because he's tired of keeping track of 12 separate universes and wants to clean house. The universes are rated by "mortal level", a measure of how developed its mortal inhabitants are, which is also a reflection on each universe's Gods and how well they've been doing their jobs; basically, he's punishing the gods of each universe for being lazy. Of course, Zeno is seemingly just as lazy; he's never shown actually running things, leaves just about everything to the Grand Minister, and Goku Black and Future Zamasu killed all the gods of Future Trunks' timeline and rampaged across the future multiverse, slaughtering mortals right under Future Zeno's nose without him knowing a thing until Goku called him in to destroy Infinite Zamasu. However, their actual intention for the universes was a Secret Test of Character, and they fully believed the winner would save the destroyed universes out of moral goodness.
    • Played straight in the manga. There was never any Secret Test of Character after the tournament was over; Zeno only held the tournament for his amusement only.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Zeno and his future self look exactly alike, so they're distinguished by seating position. Present Zeno is always on the right from the audience's perspective.
  • Kick the Son of a Bitch
    • Future Zeno obliterates Infinite Zamasu, who had just killed off the entire population of Earth and had terrorized it through his components for a year, killed all the gods of that timeline, and planned to kill every living thing there.
    • Present Zeno executes Frost, a mass murderer and war profiteer, for breaking the rules and attacking Frieza from outside the ring.
    • Both Zeno erasing Quitela (though also erasing Universe 4, which isn't an example of this), a God of Destruction who tried to sabotage Universe 7 and get it destroyed early, having no problems with framing Universe 9 which could also get it erased early, and being the most unpleasant god in the tournament. If any god deserved to be erased by Zeno, it's probably him.
  • Killer Rabbit: Is a cute, almost child-like being with an equally cute voice... and is the single most powerful being and Top God of the Dragon Ball multiverse, to the point that he could destroy the entire multiverse in an instant if he desired to. If Whis is to be believed, he already wiped out six of them in the past.
  • King of All Cosmos: The God-Emperor of The Multiverse, who looks like a tiny, blue, smiling child with an extremely high-pitched voice.
  • Lack of Empathy: The chief reason why Beerus and all the gods fear him. Under that innocence, Zeno seems devoid of qualms, second-thoughts, or even regret, over the countless trillions he's annihilated over the eons. You don't even get a warning: displease him and you're gone; play by his fight-for-survival rules, and he'll merely joyfully wipe you out if you lose. Annoy him too much, and he'll wipe you out, too, just emotionlessly so. Unlike most villains in Dragon Ball, however (and like Beerus), this doesn't mean he's intentionally malicious and can show fondness for mortals like Goku. It's just that he has a Blue-and-Orange Morality. Notably, the ending of the tournament shows that while he has little empathy for mortals as individuals, as a species he does care about them and wants them to survive and better themselves. It is noteworthy that even Frost, who he erased specifically for annoying him, is allowed to be revived, and only the future timeline is for-sure permanently erased, being justified on the basis Zamasu threatened to consume all of existence and time itself if he wasn't stopped then and there.
  • Mister Big: He isn't even half Goku's size, but he absolutely terrifies Beerus and Champa. Despite this, he's very nice and doesn't boss anyone around much...at least until the Universe Survival Arc.
  • My Future Self and Me: After Future Zeno completely decimates the multiverse of the future timeline to destroy Infinite Zamasu once and for all, he's all alone in a void. Goku takes him to the Present Zeno and they become friends.
  • My Rules Are Not Your Rules: The purpose of the Tournament and its rules, is not to enforce a fair fight - its to entertain him. And pity help you. Breaking the rules will either result in instant erasure, or it'll amuse him... giving you, or more likely your opponent, a now unbalanced advantage.
  • Mysterious Past: What is he? Where did he come from? Why is he so powerful? Is he a born god like the Kais? Is the title 'Zeno' passed on like the Gods of Destruction? So many questions and we know none of them.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: He can survive being at the point blank of a multiverse busting explosion, so powerful that not even the immortal Fusion Zamasu could survive it. Zeno, however, is left completely unharmed.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Zeno may be genuinely childish, lazy, and frequently irresponsible, but he is not stupid and is more aware of what he is doing than he likes to let on.
  • Obliviously Evil: It's left vague just where his awareness of morality stands, but for the most he appears to be this. He's not malicious by any stretch, but he will still unhesitatingly commit mass murder on a universal scale. Subverted. He apparently values goodness and the whole tournament was a Secret Test of Character. In the anime only...
  • One-Hit Kill: He can destroy anything, up to including the multiverse.
  • Our Gods Are Different: He is basically the god of multiverse, but unlike the Gods of Destruction or even the Kais who are officially the Gods of Creation, he doesn't have the title of "god". Zeno roughly translate to "King of All". We also don't know how he got his position since Zeno has the mentality of a child and doesn't seem to actually rule anything. Most of his "commands" are carried out by the Grand Minister, opening the question of who's ruling who.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Even compared to a superpowered god that magically refuses to die and is causing rifts throughout every universe and reality, Zeno is on an entirely different scale.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: One of the most powerful examples in fiction. He trumps the entire cast up to this point by being capable of casually destroying the whole multiverse, consisting of 12 Universes. There were once 18 Universes, but 6 were destroyed by him. His future self shows this by one shotting the future multiverse, which Zamasu had more or less become at that point, to finally put the Mad God down once and for all.
  • Physical God: Considering he's higher on the cosmic food chain than Beerus and Champa, he has to be this by default. Whis outright says that there's no one higher than he.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Even tinier than Monaka and packs enough punch to one-shot the entire multiverse.
  • Pure Is Not Good: Beerus points out that he's innocent and noble... but that innocent nature is exactly what makes him dangerous. Specifically, he's too innocent to truly understand the value of life, which is why he can play a game that involves destroying entire planets as a consequence and not be bothered in the slightest as long as he gets his enjoyment out of it. Ultimately played with, as the Zenos apparently value moral goodness, so much so the Tournament of Power was all a Secret Test of Character banking on whoever one to be morally upright enough they'd save the other universes.
  • Purple Is Powerful: The coat he wears is mostly purple, and the left and right thirds of his head are another shade of purple.
  • Rousseau Was Right: Seem to be a believer in this trope, as they believed from the get go that the winner of the Tournament of Power would wish back the destroyed universes and prove themselves a good person and the whole thing was a Secret Test of Character.
  • Secret Test of Character: The second point of the tournament and the Super Dragon Balls. They knew the winner of the tournament would have a virtuous heart and would resurrect all the destroyed universes. Had any other wish been made, the Zenos would have found no reason to keep any of the universes and would have just went Kill 'Em All to every universe, as in the context no matter what it'd be selfish for putting their own desires ahead of several entire universes. They are legitimately overjoyed when Android 17 passes the test. Only in the anime. Not so in the manga...
  • Spell My Name with an "S": His name has been variably spelled as Zen'o, Zen'O, Zen-o, Zen-Oh, and Zeno across various media. Zeno is the official spelling given by the English dub.
  • Story-Breaker Power: He is the single absolute most powerful being that ever exists. Even the likes of Beerus, Whis, Champa and Vados are well beneath him.
  • Top God: Beerus and Champa are gods of universes. Zeno is their superior and the ruler of the multiverse. According to Beerus, he's so powerful he could destroy the entire multiverse in an instant if he desired. Which he did in the future when Future Zamasu became an Eldritch Abomination and had to be put down.
  • Tranquil Fury: His Dissonant Serenity persists even when he's angry. Relatively minor offenses get a swift warning to cut it out or else, but if you really and truly hack him off ( like Infinite Zamasu killing everyone in the Future Trunks timeline), there'll be no warning. He'll just erase you from existence on the spot.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Zeno is possibly the most extreme example in the series. According to Whis, he isn't a fighter, he couldn't perceive Dypso's Faster Than Light attacks (to be fair, neither could Hit, a highly skilled fighter) nor could he keep track of whose God of Destruction is fighting who in the manga, and never demonstrates himself to be any stronger or faster than his childlike figure would suggest. However, none of that is important because he can instantly and irrevocably disintegrate anything he wants, anywhere he wants, and at any scale he wants (up to the entire multiverse) with no possibility of blocking or dodging the attack. Shin also implies he's Nigh-Invulnerable, his alternate future self being the one being in all of creation that Zamasu could not get rid of.
  • Verbal Tic: Zeno loves to use the word "ne" at the end of his sentences, ne?
  • World's Best Warrior: Noticeably subverted with Zeno. Beerus makes it a point to say that Zeno isn't a fighter, but he has no equal in the multiverse since he can erase anything.
  • World's Strongest Man: He is able to wipe out all twelve universes in an instant and strikes fear into Champa and Beerus. According to Beerus, there is nothing stronger than Zeno in any universe, making him the true strongest man in the Dragon World.
  • Xanatos Gambit: The whole point of the Tournament of Power is to see if mortals are capable of showing empathy for each other in the face of annihilation (if so, they would use the infinite power of the Super Dragon Balls to revive their fallen "enemies" in other universes, who were just trying to survive themselves). On one hand, if the victor of the Tournament defied Zeno's supposed will by reviving the erased universes, it would indicate a capability for goodness that merited allowing all mortals to live (remember the rationale for erasing universes in the first place is most universes not showing improvement). On the other hand, if mortals disappointed him in his goal by making a selfish wish, he would have just destroyed everything altogether. Whether mortals learn to better themselves or Zeno simply ends all mortals, he no longer has to worry about them. This trope is completely subverted in the manga, as Zeno couldn't care less about which universe won and what wish was made, selfish or not.

     Present Zeno

  • Accidental Hero: His arrival at the end of the Universe 6 vs. Universe 7 tournament prevents Champa from killing his team in a rage for losing, but didn't seem to be his intention.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Goku calls him Zen-''chan''/Zenny, much to Beerus' (and later all other universes' angels and gods') horror.
  • All-Powerful Bystander: The most powerful being in existence, but never plays an active role and just watches. Beerus states that Zeno doesn't fight, but he can destroy anything. According to Whis, there used to be eighteen Universes, but Zeno destroyed six of them when he was upset.
  • Ambiguous Innocence: The most powerful God in existence, that could destroy all universes in the blink of an eye, and he acts like a small child. The fact he will destroy the losers universes in the Universe Survival Arc, and was playing with his future counterpart a chess like game while destroying 202 real planets just brings to question how otherworldly the Lord of All is. There is a reason why Beerus and Champa are scared shitless of him. On top of it all, it's revealed during the Universe Survival Arc that Zeno was planning to destroy some of the other universes to begin with, and Goku reminding him of the Tournament of Power just gave him a convenient excuse to do so... supposedly.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: The ruler of the multiverse is the single strongest being in it, able to wipe out creation if he so desires.
  • Authority in Name Only: Even though he rules the multiverse, it's the gods below him that actually run it and the Grand Minister is shown to do the leg work when it comes to fulfilling his (sometimes vague) demands. Zeno is as childlike as his appearance suggests, rarely getting involved, and seems to spend most of his time playing. That said, he does show up to chide Beerus and Champa for ignoring their duties in favor of a tournament, though he let that go because he enjoyed it.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Has two attendants that serve as his bodyguards, but he really doesn't need them. In fact he's far more powerful than them, and has them terrified with one idle threat. Considering his wishes though, he likely keeps them around more for company than actual need of bodyguards. Alternatively, they're there to protect everyone else from him.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: In all the time he's shown, Zeno has shown zero actual leadership qualities, doing nothing but relaxing, playing games, and giving orders when he wants something, leaving all delegating and kingly duties and, well, thinking to his decidedly shady Grand Minister: at no point has he demonstrated what landed him the position as King of Everything other than being able to annihilate anyone who disagrees. But ultimately, all he really wants is mortals (and presumably their gods) to be capable of feeling enough empathy for each other that they can improve their universes.
  • Destroyer Deity: Whatever he wants erased, gets erased.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Although generally nicer like Beerus, he's a rather spoiled god who will get more than a little angry if everything isn't according to his design. He once destroyed six of the formerly eighteen universes over not getting his way on something, which is implied to have been trivial.
  • The Dreaded:
    • His mere presence causes Beerus and Champa to freak out, and for good reasons. There used to be 18 Universes instead of just 12; Zeno destroyed 6 of them when angry.
    • Remember his Attendants that guarded him? Well when they're concerned about Goku's lack of respect, he outright tells them to "shut up or be destroyed". They immediately go back to their positions.
    • Lessened only a little in the ending. Beerus, Shin, and Old Kai, who have spent the whole series sucking up to Zeno, are relaxed just enough to keep Goku from talking to Zeno about any ideas he has, and even say they will be going home now (contrast to earlier in the series, where the message was you do not get to leave Zeno's presence until he says you can. Of course, they're still doing so immensely respectfully and with some fear, because while Zeno is not the mindless destroyer they thought he was, he can still Erase anybody who displeases him too much.
  • The Gadfly: Trolls Beerus and Champa for a bit by suggesting that he's going to appoint new Gods of Destruction... before saying he was just kidding.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Behind all that power and authority, he's a lonely little guy who's never been talked to as an equal before Goku. He even specifically calls Goku from Universe 7 just to play with him. Goku brings his Future counterpart to him and they instantly become friends.
  • Jerkass God: While he seems like a Nice Guy at first, having limitless power and the mentality of a child means he can destroy anything he wants for extremely petty reasons. In the past, he destroyed 6 universes, when there was once 18, because he was upset, or a little spoiled depending on the translation. Later on he holds a Tournament of Power between all the Universes, where the punishment for losing is the destruction of said losing universe. It was revealed that he had been planning to weed out the weak universes to begin with and was using the tournament as an excuse to do so. Ultimately subverted in the anime, since the entire point of the tournament is not to just entertain him, but to test the winner of the tournament. If the winner's wish is to revive fallen universes, then they are the most virtuous person in the multiverse. If their wish is selfish, then they and the rest of existence (even the universes not participating in the tournament) would be erased on the spot.
  • Lonely at the Top: An eternity of being feared as a force of nature to whom constant respect must be paid would build thick walls behind which crippling loneliness would grow. This is why Zeno took such a fondness to Goku for being the first ever being to treat him as just another person, without any of the false respect and obsequious formalities that he is no doubt sick to death of. Even the Angelic Minders of the Gods of Destruction, who are familiar and casual around him, are distant acquaintances at best. Little wonder Zeno coldly snapped at Shin to "be quiet" when the latter tried to unnecessarily paint Goku's genuine-fondness of him as being "honored at fulfilling this duty."
  • Mood-Swinger: So far, he's been shown mainly in a good mood, but if someone gets on his nerves by being too obeisant or interfering with what he wants, he quickly adopts a harsher tone and tells them to stop or be destroyed, a threat he is incredibly capable of following through on.
  • Morality Chain: Its implied that the Grand Minister keeps him in line to ensure he doesn't get into a bad mood and ruin what universes are left from his previous temper tantrum. Interesting to note, as anyone else who dares to reason with him or dissuade Zeno from a bad idea gets threatened or easily intimidated into blind obedience. Goku also functions as this to a lesser extent as they are both very friendly towards each other as well as actually heeding Goku's request about making the Tournament of Power instead of just destroying all the weaker universes on the spot.
  • Non-Action Guy: Downplayed. Zeno doesn't fight at all, and doesn't need to. If he has a big enough problem with something (be it a person, place or entire universe) he just wipes it from existence.
  • Noodle Incident: We don't get any details, but Whis mentions that he once got upset enough about something that he wiped six universes from existence.
  • Not Helping Your Case: His I Just Want to Have Friends. Really, can you blame everyone (sans Goku) for being mere Yes-Men around him when his record includes such a Disproportionate RetributionNoodle Incident (see above)? Even more so once you see his actions and motives during the Universe Survival Saga.
  • Put Them All Out of My Misery: Decides that there are too many universes and judges them based on their quality of life for mortals, unfortunately he invokes a Duel to the Death for the low-scoring cosmos, and has no interest in saving what is good for the universes that lose.
    • He actually qualifies for this trope for different reasons. They really wanted to test mortals to see if they were right about mortals' capacity for good was greater than their selfish or evil desires. If the Zenos turned out to be wrong about mortals, they were going to delete everything on the spot.
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: How he treats the Tournament of Power. He's perfectly willing to allow competitors to break the rules if they do so in a sufficiently cool way. Then again, entertaining him is basically why the tournament was held in the first place.
  • Secret Test of Character: It turns out the entire Tournament of Power was this — if the winner had made a selfish wish, he would have erased absolutely everything on the spot. Fortunately for the multiverse, Android 17 wished instead to bring back all the destroyed universes.
  • The Social Darwinist: It's revealed in episode 80 that he was already planning to destroy weak universes before Goku reminded him of the Tournament of Power, since he thinks there are too many universes and wants to use this tournament to weed out all the universes (excluding U1, U5, U8 and U12 which pass the 7 point ratio), until only one is left standing. Ultimately subverted. He apparently values goodness and the whole tournament was a Secret Test of Character.
  • Summon Bigger Fish: Gives Goku a button to call him if needed. Goku presses it and summons Future Zeno to destroy Fusion Zamasu, who'd essentially become a reality-spanning Eldritch Abomination at that point. Future Zeno one shots him.
  • Tranquil Fury: Whenever he gets upset or angry, he never raises his voice or gives an indication of it. He simply calmly warns not to continue doing it or he'll wipe you out.
  • What's Up, King Dude?: While all the gods and attendants are freaking out over Goku's casual nature, Zeno is pretty relaxed about it. In fact, he likes Goku because Goku treats him like a normal guy, not just a powerful one. Goku's nickname for him, Zen-chan/Zenny, is about as informal as you could possibly get, but Zeno is perfectly fine about it. Similarly, his Future self seems fine with Goku's casual, forward responses, and is delighted when he meets his Present self - ie someone on the same level as him, and the same wish for companionship.

     Future Zeno

Future Zeno (未来の全王, Mirai no Zen'ō)

"All of existence, go away!"

  • And Then What?: After he blows up the Future Trunks timeline, he just floats there, evidently having literally no idea what to do now.
  • Destructive Savior: Finishes off Fusion Zamasu's final form by utterly destroying the entire timeline he is in.
  • Divine Intervention: Is summoned by Goku when all things seem lost against the Eldritch Abomination that Zamasu became, who is threatening to become the universe and break into other timelines. Zeno quickly obliterates Fusion Zamasu from existence.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Played With since it depends on which version:
    • Very much subverted in the anime. He was fully justified in his choice to destroy the multiverse of Future Trunks' timeline, as Infinite Zamasu already infected it and was starting to spread into different timelines, along with already killing the population of Future Earth other than Future Trunks and Future Mai.
    • In the manga though, Infinite Zamasu was just a ton of overpowered Fusion Zamasu clones who could potentially time travel thanks to a time machine they had found but had yet to use. All of them were freaking out upon seeing Future Zeno and as opposed to just destroying the army, Zeno proceeds to destroy the entire timeline to take out a planetary threat (at the current scale) at worst. Admittedly, the Zamasus do have Kai teleportation and could escape to anywhere, but it seems unlikely Zeno thought that far ahead.
  • The Gods Must Be Lazy: One have to wonder how he didn't know about Zamasu and Black's activities. They ran amok for years and killed his gods without him knowing a thing until Goku summoned him. If Zeno did his job, Trunks' timeline would have been spared. Though one wonders how the others such as the Grand Minister didn't know as well...
  • Godzilla Threshold: After Fusion Zamasu corrupts the multiverse after losing his physical body, Goku finds the Zeno button in his pocket while searching for a Senzu. He presses it and Future Zeno arrives, who then single-handedly eliminates Fusion Zamasu and the entire timeline.
  • Mercy Kill: After being summoned and told what happened with Infinite Zamasu (who'd become a multiverse spanning Eldritch Abomination capable of breaking through timelines), he destroys the Zamasu assimilated multiverse to put an end to him once and for all.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: The moment he realizes what Infinite Zamasu has done and that he's responsible, he powers up and one shots him in an instant. No warning him to stop it or "you'll be wiped out" speeches. Zamasu was there, and then he wasn't. End of story.
  • One-Hit Kill: Has one trumping Beerus' by a landslide. He can destroy anything, up to including the multiverse. Even being immortal won't save you, as he effortlessly annihilates Infinite Zamasu and the entire timeline his malevolent influence had infected in one shot.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Gives one before one shotting Infinite Zamasu, who's merged with the multiverse and become a reality spanning Eldritch Abomination who was threatening to break through into other timelines.

Future Zeno: All of existence, go away!

  • Running Gag:
    • Future Zeno tends to repeat most of what his present counterpart says, only doubled.
    • Any time the two raise an arm, Future Zeno will raise the left one, glance at his counterpart doing the opposite, then switch accordingly.
  • Sole Survivor: He along with Future Trunks and Mai are the only survivors of the future timeline.
  • Summon Bigger Fish: Goku presses the button Present Zeno gave him and summons Future Zeno to destroy Infinite Zamasu, who'd essentially become a reality spanning Eldritch Abomination at that point. Future Zeno one shots him.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Infinite Zamasu assimilated the entire multiverse, so Zen-o destroys the multiverse along with Zamasu with it.
  • Tranquil Fury: His expressions changes little to none, but his mood is telling when he realizes what Infinite Zamasu has been doing. He is not happy with what has been done to his multiverse.
  • Trapped in the Past: Albeit voluntarily. Having destroyed the entire multiverse of the future timeline to stop Infinite Zamasu, Goku offers to take Future Zeno to back the present where he can meet his present counterpart. Future Zeno becomes friends with his present self and is happily residing in the present time.
