Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 20-gallon aquarium need a stand?

The big question is whether you actually need a stand for a 20-gallon, or can you just use any readily available furniture. With a 10-gallon this is just about possible if the furniture in question is strong and sturdy, capable of holding 100Ibs with ease. A 20-gallon is another story entirely.

How much does a 20-gallon aquarium weigh?

When filled to capacity with water and all the assorted decorations and substrate a 20-gallon tank weighs over double that of a 10-gallon at 225Ibs. If having owned a 10-gallon that was easily supported by a cabinet or TV stand, you can’t assume these furnishing will likewise support a tank twice the weight.

Can I put a 20-gallon fish tank on a desk?

Desks are a popular idea to support a tank, as it is a very common-place item of furniture, removing the need to fork out money for a stand. Yet as previously discussed it can only be appropriate if it can uphold over 200Ibs. This is very unlikely and so too much of a risk to try with your 20-gallon.

What to put under your aquarium stand?

It is very important to make sure that the stand itself is properly stable especially if the floor isn’t completely level. On top of this, you don’t want your stand scuffing any hardwood floors or water spills damaging carpets. A waterproof mat will help prevent water from soaking into either wood or carpet, allowing for easy clean-up.

Putting something under the aquarium itself on top of the stand may also be a good consideration. A padded aquarium mat will protect the stand, or any furniture being used while keeping the tank balanced and preventing it from slipping on the stand surface. If a rimless or glass-bottom tank a mat is a must.

How to level aquarium stand?

It is integral for the stand to be level. Any listing will shift water pressure to one side, which over time can lead to possible leaking or at the most extreme breakage.

Set the stand in its desired location and check the top and sides with a level. Lightly shake and rock the stand to note how solid it feels. You can even put the empty aquarium on top while doing so to see if there is any movement.

If the stand is not level the best way to solve this is by using shims. A shim is a tapered wedge used for making slight adjustments to home elements such as door frames and windows to make them level.

The most common are wood and are useful for interior adjustments. Plastic shims may be of further use in aquaria due to the advantage of being water and rot-resistant.

First, determine which side needs to be raised then insert the small end of the shim between the stand and the floor. Use a rubber mallet to beat the shim in further, the deeper it goes the wider the shim and the more it will lift the stand. Once in place lift the exposed end of the shim to snap it leaving one end under the stand.

If one shim is not thick enough for the required adjustment, add another next to the first one facing the opposite way. Once level driving a nail or screw through the shims into the frame will increase security.

How to reinforce an aquarium stand?

If made of wood look at how the top is secured onto the legs. Have the legs notched if they are connected by screws to make the top more secure. If metal and connected by screws, having it welded will provide better structural strength.

Adding a few supports to the frame itself will reinforce a wooden stand. A couple of 2 by 4s that are spaced evenly from the sides going front to back. Further support can be added to the middle of the front and back portions of the frame aligning with the outer edges.

Top 5 Best 29 Gallon Aquarium Stand (2021 Buyer’s Guide)

An aquarium stand might seem like an unnecessary purchase after you’ve just bought a tank and all the supplies you need for your fish. However, a common dilemma aquarists face is misjudging how heavy a tank is when you fill it with water.

Using an unsuitable frame for your tank can end in disastrous consequences, but to ensure that this doesn’t happen to you, I’ve reviewed some of the best 29-gallon aquarium stands.

After considering all the options our top picks were…

Can It Support the Weight of Your Tank?

It’s crucial you use a stand that is able to hold the capacity of your tank. If the stand you use is too small, then you run the risk of it collapsing under the weight of your aquarium. For example, if you own a 29-gallon aquarium, you’ll require a stand that is targeted for tanks of this size or over.

Aquarium stands are worth using as they are designed for supporting the weight of your tank. Placing your aquarium on an item of furniture that isn’t intended for holding aquariums can be problematic, as you can’t be sure that they are sturdy or durable enough.

How Big is Your Tank?

The size of your tank also comes into play when choosing a suitable aquarium stand. Although the number of gallons of water your tank can hold is important, the length, height, and width of it also need to be considered.

Your aquarium stand needs to be longer and wider than the length and width of your tank…

Your aquarium stand needs to be longer and wider than the length and width of your tank. If your aquarium is longer or wider than the stand, it is very likely to break once you fill it with water. This is because the sides of the tank that are unsupported by the stand will begin to weaken.

Additionally, some stands are designed for certain types of tanks, such as bow-curve or high-top aquariums. It’s a good idea to check the stand you plan to use is able to support the type of tank you own.

Light Wood Texture

What Material is the Stand Made From?

There are various materials aquarium stands are made from, but the most common ones are particleboard, plywood, and metal.

Particleboard Stands

Stands made from particleboard are typically the most affordable, but they are not recommended for saltwater tanks. The humidity from saltwater aquariums can damage and warp the wood over time.

In general, particleboard stands are susceptible to warping, especially if they have not been coated in moisture-resistant powder. Spilling water on an aquarium stand is bound to happen when you own fish, such as during water changes and basic tank maintenance.

If you were planning on placing your aquarium on a wooden cabinet or another piece of furniture in your home, then this is something to keep in mind. It’s unlikely they will be moisture-resistant, so it’s best to use a stand that is specifically designed for holding aquariums.

Plywood Stands

Plywood aquarium stands are a great choice for most tanks due to the amount of weight they can support. Again, like particleboard stands, it’s vital that the one you pick is moisture-resistant. Plywood aquariums are a good option for acrylic aquariums, but they can be a little pricey.

Metal Stands

Metal stands are normally used for large glass aquariums as they are sturdy, durable, and strong. Most metal stands are made from stainless steel or aluminum. If you’re thinking of using a metal stand for your aquarium, it’s a good idea to select one that is anti-corrosive to prevent it from rusting.

Unlike the majority of wooden aquarium stands, metal frames provide you with more space to access your aquarium equipment…

Unlike the majority of wooden aquarium stands, metal frames provide you with more space to access your aquarium equipment, like wires and tubing for your filter, heater, air pump, etc.

However, metal stands often lack storage space, which means you’ll have to place your aquarium supplies somewhere else.

Overall Stand Design

Aquarium stands come in a plethora of designs. Some are capable of holding more than one aquarium, which is ideal for aquarists who want to own more than one tank but don’t have the space. These types of aquarium stands will have an extra level, typically at the bottom, for you to add another aquarium on.

There are also aquarium stands that come with storage compartments or cabinets for you to hold your aquarium supplies in. The design of the stand is entirely down to personal preference and your needs.

Custom, DIY, or Store-bought Stands?

Custom aquarium stands are commonly used by aquarists with large tanks and setups. This is because most store-bought aquarium stands are unable to support the weight of very big tanks.

A custom stand is normally made to order by an aquarium manufacturer who will take into account the specifications of the aquarist’s tank, as well as any other special requirements, such as shelves, cabinets, and storage compartments. Custom stands are very high-quality but are extremely expensive.

DIY Stands

If you’ve got a talent for carpentry, then a DIY aquarium stand might be worth taking a look at. A DIY aquarium stand gives you full customization. As you’re purchasing all of the materials for the stand yourself, its less costly than hiring an aquarium manufacturer to build one for you.

Before building a DIY aquarium stand, it’s a good idea to do some research on the type of materials you’ll need.

Store-bought Stands

Store-bought aquarium stands are the most accessible as you can order them online or swing by your local pet-store to collect one. For tanks on the smaller side like a 29-gallon, store-bought stands are perfectly adequate.

Wet Wooden Table Surface

Durability and Water-resistance

As your aquarium stand is going to be holding a lot of water, you want it to be both durable and water-resistant. Your aquarium stand needs to be sturdy and robust so it can’t be easily knocked over. Ideally, it should be made out of a high-quality material that is long-lasting so you don’t have to replace it frequently.

Make sure the aquarium stand you use is water-resistant or has been coated in a moisture-resistant powder/solution to prevent it from weakening, warping, or rusting over time.

When choosing an aquarium stand, you obviously want it to look appealing while also supporting the weight of your tank. Aquarium stands are available in a variety of colors and finishes, so there shouldn’t be an issue finding one that matches the room you want to place it in.

Empty Room Lit by Sunlight

Consider the Space for Equipment

As an aquarist, you probably have a never-ending list of equipment for your tank, whether it’s a filter, heater, air pump, or supplies like medication, food, and siphons. If you don’t have enough space for your supplies, then an aquarium stand that comes with a cabinet or additional storage compartments might be ideal.

How Easy Is It to Set Up?

Ensuring your aquarium stand is assembled correctly is vital as you don’t want it to break or fall apart, especially when you place your tank on top of it. Some stands are easier to put together than others, so if you’re not confident in your construction skills, it’s best to pick a frame that is simple to assemble or comes pre-assembled.

What Is a Good Aquarium Stand Height?

Most aquarium stands are designed to be looked at when you are sitting down. You don’t want one that is so short you can’t see your tank or one that is so tall it requires a step-ladder to access. A good height for an aquarium stand is around 30 inches.

What Look Do You Want?

There’s an array of options to choose from with aquarium stands, so consider what type of look you want to go for. If you own a blackwater tank that’s heavily-planted, then a dark-colored aquarium stand could complement it nicely. Alternatively, a warm brown aquarium frame might be a great choice for a tank with light substrate and a driftwood centerpiece.

Review Summary

Here’s a quick overview of my top three 29-gallon aquarium stands.

Aquatic Fundamentals Aquarium Stand

In terms of value and quality, this 29-gallon aquarium stand is my overall recommendation.

Aquatic Fundamentals have a great selection of stands, but this one is my top choice as its durable, high-quality, and fairly inexpensive. It looks appealing and is made from steel that has been coated in a water-resistant powder to prevent warping and chipping.

Imagitarium Brooklyn Metal Stand

For those who want a good-quality 29-gallon aquarium stand that doesn’t break the bank, this in my top pick.

The 29-gallon aquarium stand by Imagitarium is both sturdy and affordable. It’s made from solid steel so it’s strong enough to support the weight of your aquarium. Adjustable feet are also included to help you keep your tank level.

Ameriwood Home Laguna Tide 29-37 Gallon Aquarium Stand

My personal favorite out of all the stands I’ve reviewed. It’s visually attractive, high-quality, but a little pricier than the other stands as a result.

Ameriwood’s aquarium stand looks beautiful and can support tanks up to 37 gallons, so it will have no trouble holding a 29-gallon aquarium. The feature I like most about this stand is the amount of storage you get with it: three open compartments and one cabinet!

29 Gallon Aquarium Stand Top Picks

Aquatic Fundamentals Aquarium Stand

If you’re looking for a stand that’s high-quality, durable, and fairly inexpensive, the 29-gallon aquarium stand from Aquatic Fundamentals comes up top. The material of the frame is steel that has been coated in a black moisture-resistant powder. This means there’s no worry of it chipping or warping, unlike stands that are made from wood.

The stand is pretty easy to put together and doesn’t take too long to get set up and running. I love the design of this stand and it’s also fairly durable. It’ll look great while providing your tank with reassuring support.

However, the assembly instructions can be a little confusing, but with a little mental gymnastics you’ll have it built in no time.

A minor drawback with the Aquatic Fundamentals stand is it can be a bit wobbly. Pushing it up firmly against a wall will help counteract this, so it’s nothing to be too concerned about.

Despite its low price, it’s incredibly durable due to its solid steel frame…

You get adjustable feet with the stand so you can make sure your tank will be perfectly level before adding it. The only negative with these adjustable feet are their wobbliness. You could rectify this by placing a piece of cardboard or a flat object underneath them to improve the stand’s overall stability.

The stand is black, sleek, and stylish. I really like the design of this aquarium stand as it looks a lot more expensive than it is. Although the stand isn’t as high-quality as some of the others in this list, the price definitely makes up for this minor flaw.

Ample Storage Space

My favorite feature of this stand by Ameriwood is the amount of storage it comes with. There are four open compartments, as well as a large cabinet for you to keep your aquarium equipment in.

You could also place books, trinkets, ornaments, etc, on the shelves to make the stand blend in with the rest of your room. As someone who is always in need of more storage space, this is something I appreciate in an aquarium stand.

Assembly wise, the Ameriwood aquarium stand is a breeze to put together….

Assembly wise, the Ameriwood aquarium stand is a breeze to put together. You’d think a stand like this would be difficult to build, but thankfully, that isn’t the case.

One slight drawback with the stand is it is prone to chipping and warping, so it might not be as long-lasting as other stands. Particleboard aquarium stands are typically at risk for these problems, so I don’t think it’s a fault with the manufacturer.

After considering all the options our top picks were…

Out of all the aquarium stands I’ve reviewed, I think the Imagitarium Brooklyn Metal Stand is a clear winner. It’s sturdy, durable, and is a perfect fit for 29-gallon tanks.

That’s not to say that my picks for the ‘Best All-Rounder’ and ‘Editor’s Choice’ categories are inferior. For the majority of 29-gallon aquariums, the Aquatic Fundamentals Aquarium Stand is a fantastic option. It’s easy to assemble, looks great, and is very durable.

If you’ve got a bit of a wider budget, then the Ameriwood Home Laguna Tide 29-37 Gallon Aquarium Stand is worth taking a closer look at. Visually, it’s my favorite out of all the products I’ve reviewed. It also comes with a large amount of storage space, which is great for aquarists who need an extra house to stash all their aquarium supplies!

Budget Wise

Going back to the Imagitarium aquarium stand, the feature I like most about it is its affordability. Compared to the other stands, it’s the most inexpensive option. Although you might think its price has a direct correlation with its quality, this certainly isn’t the case.

The structure of the stand is well-made, strong, and there’s no risk of it being knocked over easily. It’s made from solid steel, which eliminates the risk of it warping or rotting. Particleboard stands are unsuitable for saltwater setups, so a high-quality metal frame like this one is a great choice.

I like that the stand comes with adjustable feet so you can level it to make sure your tank is perfectly straight before you add it. Although you don’t get any extra storage space with this stand, it does allow you to have easy access to your equipment like your filter and heater.

Choose What’s Right for You

However, if you’re looking for a different type of aquarium stand, then any of the products listed above are also an excellent option. They’re a bit pricier but they might be a better fit for your needs if require a frame with storage compartments or one that can hold more than one tank.

What to Consider When Choosing the Best 20 Gallon Fish Tank Stand

When you settle on buying a stand for your 20 gallon fish tank, you can be sure you’ll be at a crossroad for almost anything you see. However, there are some universal things to consider when you’re stand-shopping. From size to materials, it all matters to provide the best product possible. They all play a significant role in durability and age-proofing so you’ll be sure to have a product that won’t make you regret a single penny.

20 gallon tanks usually come in 2 sizes:

  • 24″ Length , 12″ Width, 16″ Height for the standard size
  • or 30″ Length, 12″ Width, 13″ Height for the long.

Keeping that in mind your stand has to have a 24 inch base for the standard size or 30 inches for a 20 gallon long aquarium. Either way, the stand’s base needs to fit your tank comfortably so as to avoid undesirable accidents and their costs. In case your tank base is equal to or below 20″ x 10″ consider using a 10 gallon fish tank stand.

The tank should never have its edges out the stand’s base and it’s better for the stand’s base to be somewhat larger than the tank’s base. The size is crucial in most stands or your tank won’t fit, Make sure to calculate everything before purchase.

When it comes to things like design, there’s not really a guide. It pleases your eyes and your house, it’s going to be a good choice. Design and taste depend from person to person and where it’s a priority to some, it’s at the bottom of their requirements for some others.

The thing to keep in mind is to choose between functionality and aesthetics. Sometimes you’ll see some seriously beautiful stands that are simple enough to fit in with the minimalistic theme, and sometimes you’ll see big bulky ones that are not only good-looking but also have several functions for all enthusiasts of multi-purpose things.

There are multiple designs to choose from rather it is simple, classy, modern, or just a little bit edgy, and our list contains one for each of them.

Built and Materials

To hold such a heavy tank, you’ll need a well-built aquarium table that is sure to handle all you’ll throw at it. It needs to be sturdy, tough, and not wobble too much if accidentally bumped.

It can be of either metal or wood, but regardless they need to be made in such a way to last you long without things to worry about. A well-built fish tank table needs to have 3 main qualities:

  • Good weight distribution.
Weight distribution is crucial for bigger tanks. Without a proper weight distribution, your aquarium stand might lean and stay askew which is not only an aesthetic problem but also an accident waiting to happen.

Apply slight pressure to the wrong side and you can kiss your 20 gal long aquarium stand goodbye together with the tank on it!
  • Steady base.
A steady base makes sure that the surface where your aquarium is standing doesn’t curve. That might cause your aquarium to break from the pressure or simply collapse on the ground. It’s the most important part of the build and it plays a great role in the overall durability of the stand.
  • Well-made materials.
Most aquariums are mainly made of three materials: metal, plywood, and particleboards. Now there’s no bad or good between these, considering each of them serves a certain purpose. Their main difference is the price and water resistance.

However with the right hydrophobic finish, the latter is barely noticeable between the three. As for the price, it’s never a good idea to get the absolute cheapest thing, nor to overdo it. We understand that it’s hard to decide whether you should go with metal aquarium stands or wood aquarium stands but remember that everything you purchase should be made accounting for your current situation. These things are built to serve you and your fish, not the other way around.

Your Environment

  • Do you live in a spacious home?
  • Do you prefer smaller apartments?
  • Do you have other pets?
  • Do you have children?

All of these are factors that affect your choice of an aquarium stand. If you have children or pets, it’s a better choice to get sturdy and relatively high aquarium cabinets rather than shorter aquarium tables so you won’t have to go through an unpleasant situation.

If you live in a larger home, a small stand might seem out of space so you need to see for the ones that naturally fill up that empty place. If your jam is smaller apartments, you need to find a not very spacious stand that complements the other furniture and overall interior design without making it feel cramped.

Regardless of its main function, aquarium stands serve an aesthetic one as well, making them another piece of furniture you have to get for your house.

Besides buying a stand for your tank, you can very well build one, or have it built custom for you. There are tanks and tank-owners that have specific demands that won’t fit the ones already existing.

There are also people that like to do these things themselves exactly the way they want. There are tons of tutorials online on building a DIY 20 gallon tank stand and if you’re lucky you might have a local carpenter that will welcome your request.

Frequently Asked Questions

The article above contains a lot of valuable information and can help you choose the best 20 gallon fish tank stand for your needs. However, during our research, we found a number of common questions that are of concern to potential buyers. We will answer some of them.

Can you use a TV Stand to hold your 20 gal fish tank?

The simple answer is no. They’re not stable enough to hold any tank above 10 gallons. TV’s are way lighter than tanks and their stands aren’t stable enough to distribute the weight or hold it at all.

Can you put a fish tank stand on the floor?

This is one of the questions we’ve heard the most and it’s the strongest no in the fish-care world. Aquarium stands are made to have a certain height, as it’s very easy for things to fall into it or be kicked by accident. Just think of how many times you’ve bumped your pinky toe on your sofa. It’s definitely not a safe place to put a glass box full of living things.

How much does a 20 gallon glass tank weigh?

When filled with freshwater, around 177 pounds, or when filled with saltwater, approx. 181 pounds. Keep in mind these are near estimates as it varies from tank to tank and its contents. A 20 gallon fish tank might weigh up to 200 pounds with all the fish and equipment. That’s why it’s important to make sure the stand supports your tank fully finished.

Choosing the Best 20 Gallon Tank Stand

There are thousands of choices to look through, but there’s a reason why we only put the top 10 fish tank stands on the list above. Though they might share similarities with other aquarium stands, durability and functionality propelled them to make the list without a hitch. If you’re still on the fence between a few choices, or you simply don’t even know where to start, then you’re headed in the right direction. With this section, you’re going to get all of the answers you need to pick out the best 20 gallon fish tank stand that you could possibly buy.

Do you care more about appearance or functionality?

Many of the stands on the list feature numerous storage areas, special feet, and so on. On the other hand, some of them only have a top for the tank and nothing else. You have to ask yourself if you want the stand to be a part of the aquarium setup visually, or if you’re after the actual functions of the stand. For example, storage is a huge area of concern for people.

Having enough storage means that you can put all of the fish-related supplies right below the tank for easy access. Some of the stands even have enough space to put other random belongings underneath if you need a convenient place to store them. You can even try to adjust the inner shelves that most of the fish tank stands have to give yourself more room for a bulky pump or bulk-sized food and cleaning supplies for its occupants.

People who are more after the appearance rather than the functionality might appreciate the stands that have nice patterns all over them or ones that come with wood finishes. You might want to select a color, or you could even go with the stock option that it comes with. Another factor in appearance is the stands that come without any storage or additional designs. These low-profile tank stands keep the focus of your guests on the fish tank itself rather than the stand that it’s sitting on. The choice is yours in the end, but this is just one of the many things to consider!

Do you have kids or dogs?

Having kids or playful dogs can influence your choice of a tank stand in a few ways. While most children and pets grow to be well-behaved and aware of what they can and cannot play with, there’s nothing wrong with having a few safety precautions on hand. For example, the entry at number 10 on the list has a raised lip edge to keep the tank from slipping or falling off if it’s bumped. When it’s playtime around the house, nothing is safe! Keeping your aquarium from falling over can save you from unwanted expenses and possible injuries.

There are also a few options on the list that have widened bases and/or feet that are designed to be slip-resistant. Both of these choices will prevent the tank from falling over as well. Fortunately for you, every single tank stand on the list above has some sort of safety measure to keep you and your family out of harm’s way.

That being said, nothing can save your wallet if a cat or dog starts to scratch up your wooden fish tank stand. If you have curious pets that like to make a mess of new pieces of furniture, then you might want to settle for a stainless steel tank stand rather than a wooden one. Stainless steel is a solid material that resists scratches and scuff marks that might otherwise ruin other materials. You should also avoid particleboard in this scenario, as it can become brittle and damaged after months or years of scratching and biting.

How long do you plan to own a fish tank with a stand?

Different materials last much longer than others, but this isn’t always a bad thing for people who don’t want to own a fish tank for more than a few years. The stand is obviously a key factor in the whole setup, so you should look after the longevity of it as much as the aquarium itself.

The basic breakdown of materials between wood, particleboard, and stainless steel is as follows; Wood lasts long, but it’s heavy and subject to moisture and scratches. Stainless steel is heavy as well and can be susceptible to rust, but it can last a lifetime. Finally, particleboard is cheap, lightweight, and great at distributing weight, but it can break if it’s knocked around too much. With all of the knowledge in this section, you’re fully equipped to make the best decision possible to find your new 20 gallon aquarium stand. Good luck!

Pros and Cons of Double Tank Stands

Double aquarium stands have been on the market for some time, but just because they are available, does that mean they are a wise choice for an aquarium owner? The answer depends largely on factors within the owner’s home. In some cases, it’s a great way to have two tanks occupy the same space that one normally would, while in other cases it’s a disaster waiting to happen.

Saves Space

There are certainly pros to having a double aquarium stand. At the top of the list is the space savings. With a double stand, you can keep two aquariums in the same floor space as a single tank would take. If you are like many fish lovers, there is never enough room for all the fish you want to keep. Having a second tank doubles the fish keeping options.

Quarantine Tank

Even if you aren’t in need of more room for fish, there is still a good reason to have a second tank. Everyone should have a quarantine tank, but few people set aside space for it. When bringing new fish home, they should be separated for a period of time to verify they are healthy before adding them to the main tank. Likewise, when fish become ill, it’s usually best to treat them in a separate tank. Having a quarantine tank ready to use is a perfect way to treat sick fish while not disturbing the main tank.

Breeding Tank

Breeding fish is fun but can be challenging in a community aquarium. Best results are obtained when having a separate breeding and rearing tank. The optimal breeding conditions can be created in the breeding tank, and once the breeders have spawned, they can be moved back to the main tank. The fry can then be reared in the breeding tank, with no danger of being eaten by the adult fish. It’s a win-win situation all around.

Aging Water

Last but not least, if not using the second tank for fish, it can be used to age water. Set the tank up with a filter and heater, fill it with water, treat it, and let it run. When it comes time to perform a water change on the main tank, use water from the second tank. It will make water change time less stressful for both you and your fish. After changing the water in the main tank, simply fill the secondary tank and you will be ready for the next water change. Meanwhile, you have a tank up and running at all times for quarantine purposes.

Double Tank Negatives

Of course, there is a downside to using a double tank stand. One of the biggest negatives is the fact that the second tank is rather cramped at the top, making maintenance challenging. Large items, as well as larger fish, cannot be easily moved in and out of the lower tank. Viewing the lower tank is not as enjoyable as the upper tank because one must either bend over or sit on the floor. However, the lower tank is at the perfect height for viewing by small children, which brings up another potential negative.

Children and pets can easily access the lower tank, which has the potential for a variety of problems. It’s hard enough to keep small hands or curious pets paws, out of an aquarium when it is at a higher level. Move the tank down to nearly floor level, and problems are sure to follow.

Another problem with a double tank stand that few people think of is the weight issue. The floor may be strong enough to hold the weight of one filled tank, but two filled tanks in the same space could be too much in some locations. This is particularly true with larger tank sizes. Ten-gallon tanks are not likely to be a problem anywhere, but two 75-gallon tanks are a different matter. Combined, they come to a whopping 1,700 pounds when both are filled, all of that weight resting on a mere 48-inch-by-18-inch space. Always estimate the total weight and verify your floor can handle it.

Lastly, the lower tank is more likely to be exposed to drafts and cooler air temperatures than the upper tank. This can be offset with a heater but should be kept in mind when using a double tank stand. If you are keeping fish in both tanks, you may want to consider keeping coldwater fish in the lower tank. Then you need not worry about them getting too chilly, especially if you live in northern climates where temperatures get low in the winter months.
