Acceleration Acceleration Acceleration tests are conducted on a smooth, flat pavement straightaway at the track. Time, speed, and distance measurements are taken with a precise GPS-based device that’s hooked to a data-logging computer.
0 to 60 mph 0 to 60 mph (sec.) The time in seconds that a vehicle takes to reach 60 mph from a standstill with the engine idling.
Transmission Transmission Transmission performance is determined by shifting smoothness, response, shifter action, and clutch actuation for manual transmissions.
Braking Braking The braking rating is a composite of wet and dry stopping distances and pedal feel. Braking distance is from 60 mph, with no wheels locked.
Emergency Handling Emergency Handling Several factors go into the rating, including the avoidance maneuver speed and confidence, as well as how the vehicle behaves when pushed to its limit.

CARFAX — Your Vehicle History Expert
Sometimes what you don't know can't hurt you, but that's not the case when buying a used car. As an independent vehicle history provider, at CARFAX we've made it our mission to tell you everything you need to know by uncovering as many events as possible from the previous life of a used car. Our primary goal is to help you get to know your next car from the inside out before deciding to make an investment that will be part of you and your family's everyday life. We believe your next car shouldn't be hiding anything from you.
CARFAX Vehicle History Reports contain over 28 billion historical records from 20 European countries, the US and Canada, which are updated daily with new information.
Even if you live in a country we don't collect vehicle data from, it's still always worth checking the Vehicle Identification Number without obligation. The used car import and export market is booming and many owners would be surprised to find out exactly what happened to their vehicle during its previous life abroad.
Privacy for Customers — Transparency over Vehicles
Let's be clear: Although we strive to find every detail of a vehicle's life so far, we are focused only on the vehicle's history, and do not collect any information on previous owners. The information we provide relates solely to the vehicle, its odometer reading, any accidents that have been covered up, where the vehicle comes from and much more — it never gets personal. We've uncovered irreparable damage several times in the past, but other times our vehicle history checks draw a blank — and sometimes that's actually a good thing.
Second Hand — Not Second Best
Did you know that considerably more used cars are sold than new cars? We think this second-hand system is nothing short of fantastic. However, it goes without saying that it gives rise to different methods and tactics: Some sellers will disguise a car that's been in an accident under a fresh coat of paint, tamper with the odometer or conceal theft. This is one of the less appealing aspects of buying second hand. Our goal is to establish trusting relationships between buyers and sellers, since this is the best way to help customers make the right decision. Your new car should be reliable and make you feel safe, as well as make you feel like you haven't paid too much.
But more than anything else, we don't want you or your family unknowingly sitting behind the wheel of a vehicle that isn't 100% safe. This is why we strive to take these vehicles off the road, which not only makes the used car market safer but our streets safer too.
CARFAX — 35+ Years of Experience in Vehicle Histories
CARFAX was founded in the US in 1984 and expanded into Europe in 2007. Around 100 team members spread across six European offices process vehicle information from 22 countries.
Fostering strategic partnerships with registration authorities, law enforcement agencies, government departments, insurance companies, inspection centers and numerous other leading companies around the world has enabled us to compile a unique international database for vehicle histories. We use this database to help make the used car market more transparent. We give everyone in the process of buying a used car access to what is currently the world's most comprehensive source for vehicle history reports, and is growing day by day.
We remain neutral and independent despite our partnerships — our sole purpose is help customers make an informed choice and ensure their safety and the safety of their family. This includes never collecting any personal details — we do not accept any PII from data sources amongst the information we provide about a vehicle. We ensure that data protection laws are observed at all times. Furthermore, we always collect our data in compliance with legal and regulatory frameworks — in all the countries in which we are active. We expressly distance ourselves from illegal activities such as data theft, scraping and hacking.

Ford Explorer Expert Review
MotorTrend Staff
The Ford Explorer underwent some major changes last year. Completely reengineered and transformed from a traditional SUV to a car-based seven-passenger crossover, the 2012 Ford Explorer crossover enters its second model year with a new 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 joining the naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6.
For those who aren't in a hurry and want to eke out as much fuel as possible before filling up, the 2012 Explorer with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine - a new-to-the-U.S. engine - might be worth consideration. Available for a $990 premium over the standard 290-hp 3.5-liter V-6 with 255 lb-ft of torque, the 240-hp 2.0-liter I-4 has 270 lb-ft of torque and has been designed to deliver claimed best-in-class fuel economy on the EPA's cycle. The only other additions for 2012 are new paint colors. The 2012 Explorer is now available in Ginger Ale Metallic, Dark Blue Pearl Metallic, Cinnamon Metallic, and Black.
The 2012 Explorer continues to offer standard seven-passenger seating this year. While the Explorer's interior may look roomy, in our testing we discovered that looks can be deceiving, and that seating is rather tight for a seven-passenger crossover. The 2012 Explorer also comes loaded with tech like Sync, and MyFord Touch.
Body style: SUV
Engines: 3.5L V-6, 2.0L turbocharged I-4
Transmission: 6-speed automatic
Models: Ford Explorer, Ford Explorer XLT, Ford Explorer Limited
New for 2012 is the North American debut of Ford's 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine under the hood of the Explorer. Available in front-wheel drive only, and for a $990 premium over the more powerful and slightly less fuel efficient V-6, the 240-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 nets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway. For 2012 Ford has also made new color options available. The new color choices are Ginger Ale Metallic, Dark Blue Pearl Metallic, Cinnamon Metallic, and Black.
The 2012 Explorer's looks proved polarizing among the Motor Trend staff. A significant departure over the previous model, some staffers described it as pretty good-looking while others weren't so kind, comparing it to a larger, frumpier Range Rover Evoque. Both the Explorer and Explorer XLT feature chrome grilles, while the top-trim Explorer Limited gets a body colored grille. Base Explorers also come with 17-inch steel wheels, while the Explorer XLT gets 17-inch alloy wheels, and Explorer Limited gets 20-inch alloy wheels.
While most staff members agree that the Explorer's interior looks pleasant enough, we ultimately found that it could make better use of its interior space. In our First Test of an EcoBoost-equipped 2012 Explorer, we wrote, "It's just such inefficient packaging...It looks roomy, but it's not. It looks sporty, but it's not. And the interior looks good, but that MyFord Touch is a mess." We also found seating in the Explorer on the tight side, with both the second and third row likely to draw vocal complaints from teenagers. On the plus side, we did like the Explorer's option power-folding third row that, with the hatch open, will fold 90 degrees backwards, proving a comfortable seat for tailgating.
Simply put: get the V-6. In our testing we found the 3.5-liter 290-hp V-6 to be adequate enough to squeeze through traffic, and merge onto busy freeways, although it could use a bit more torque. The Explorer XLT AWD model we tested took 7.9 seconds to hit 60 mph from a standstill. Though it may be adequate in a smaller, lighter vehicle, we found the four-cylinder EcoBoost in the Explorer we tested, to be "dynamically lifeless," and, "woefully slow." The 240-hp 2.0-liter I-4 took the Explorer from 0-60 mph in 9.2 seconds. We also found the Explorer to be rather lifeless in the bends, "Wallowy in the slalom and figure-eight with understeer being the flavor of choice." Fuel economy didn't prove to be the EcoBoost Explorer's saving grace either. Because the EcoBoost engine is tasked with hauling around 4500 pounds, our observed fuel economy failed to match EPA estimates.
Safety may be one of the Explorer's saving graces as it's loaded with safety features. The 2012 Explorer comes standard with AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control and Curve Control. The Explorer also is features second-generation first-row airbags, side-seat airbags, and side curtain airbags. Optional on the Explorer are second-row inflatable rear belts. Packaged together with Ford's Blind Spot Information System, the inflatable rear seat belts are designed to spread the impact of a collision across a broader area, reducing the pressure that a conventional seatbelt would cause.
Explorer: 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway (FWD, V-6); 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway (EcoBoost I-4); 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway (AWD, V-6)
Explorer XLT: 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway (FWD, V-6); 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway (EcoBoost I-4); 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway (AWD, V-6)
Explorer Limited: 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway (FWD, V-6); 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway (EcoBoost I-4); 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway (AWD, V-6)
