Borderlands: The Pre Sequel - Who is the Best Character for Co-Op and Solo Mode?

By Kieran Mourtisen

ShareTweetEmail

In Borderlands: The Pre Sequel, there are six playable characters, each capable of fighting on their own, but which ones also work well within a team?

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is the game within the Borderlands franchise that not only took players to Pandora's moon, but also gave Handsome Jack a more likable personality. Although he is the main villain in Borderlands 2, the new installment allows users to play alongside Jack himself and better understand his descent into madness. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequelgives fans a deeper look into the lore behind the havoc that takes place in Borderlands 2, and even allows users to play as non player characters (NPCs) featured in specific DLC, such as Athena and Nisha. Although this game was created to give more lore to Borderlands, there are still plenty of enemies to shoot and kill players, which forces gamers to think carefully about the characters they play as.

Borderlands: TPS consists of four main characters to choose from, each equipped to easily handle waves of enemies by themselves. However, because Vault Hunters are often referred to as a team of multiple players throughout the game, Gearbox encourages users to grab a friend and cause more mayhem than ever before. But whose abilities are best suited for solo fighting, and which characters should be paired with a friend to get their best value? Unlike previous installments, TPS does not offer a playable siren, but makes up for it with the unique abilities of its other characters.

RELATED: Borderlands 2: Who is the Best Character for Solo and Co-Op?

When playing TPS alone, many gamers may turn to characters such as Wilhelm, Athena, or Jack's doppelganger, due to their abilities' focus on self-sustain and giving an extra hand in battle. Wilhelm has a unique action that allows him to summon two drones to his aid in the midst of a battle; one which hangs back to heal him, while another jumps in front of him to protect him from enemies. Jack has a similar ability when he creates his body doubles, but these are unable to heal the player. However, the doubles will shoot at enemies and serve as distractions from the player so that they can heal, reload, or shoot from a distance. Athena is an exception in this category because she cannot summon aid, but she does wield a powerful shield. With it, she absorbs damage upon activating her ability, and a second activation has the character hurl her shield at enemies, distributing the damage it consumed. Being a hired gun that travels the galaxy by herself, it is clear that she is intended to play as a solo character, but players are not dissuaded from playing her with their friends.

These solo characters also have certain skill trees that allow players to gain specific elemental resistances and weapon advantages to improve their capabilities on the battlefield. For example, Athena's Phalanx tree focuses on buffing her shield, known as Aspis, to absorb and reflect more damage back to enemies. On the other hand, Wilhelm and Jack have skill trees that focus specifically on increasing player damage output, due to the fact that their deployables are able to heal them in some way. Wilhelm's Hunter-Killer tree reduces his skill cooldown time, while increasing his offensive and elemental weapon capabilities. The shortened action skill allows for a healing drone to be deployed faster than usual, keeping him alive for longer. As for Jack, his Greater Good tree grants the player healing and even second winds whenever one of his clones is destroyed, helping the bullets to keep coming. Even though Jack and Wilhelm are more aggressive solo players, Athena can put out a significant amount of damage if built appropriately.

On the other hand, the characters that are best suited for cooperative play focus on supporting teammates and helping them kill enemies faster. These players are Claptrap, Nisha, and Aurelia. Although Claptrap is an NPC that fans love to hate, his abilities in TPS are pretty unique, and let him help keep his "friends" alive. Claptrap's hero skill restores him to full health and gives him a random ability out of 13 possible abilities, based on how many players are on his team and the situation that they are in. For example, his Torgue Fiesta forces all players to uncontrollably throw grenades, damaging both friends and foes. Although this does not deplete the player's grenade count, it causes a large inconvenience if the battle is at its end, or if the grenades cause the rest of the team to be knocked down. While playing Claptrap, be wary of his random skill ability.

As for Nisha and Aurelia, these heroes are more structured and focus on dealing large amounts of damage to individual enemies. Nisha's action skill allows her to lock on to enemy critical locations and deal extra damage with her guns, which is only increased through her skill trees. Players who select Nisha as a partnered Vault Hunter should be experienced FPS players, as her Riflewoman tree grants gun buffs when performing trick shots and killing enemies during her action skill. Each of her trees focuses on improving the damage of her guns, making Nisha the most "basic" character in the game, due to the fact that her abilities are aimed specifically at improving her weapons instead of the character herself.

Finally, Aurelia: The Baroness is probably the most unique character that the Borderlands franchise has introduced, mostly due to the fact that she can freeze her enemies in place. Her skill trees are centered around dealing increased damage to frozen enemies, and although she does not have many sustaining skills, her Contractual Aristocracy tree that allows her and her allies to increase the damage they deal. Although Aurelia, like all other characters on this list, can complete the story of TPS on their own, these cooperative characters work best when supported or working together with others, making the game progress much more fluidly.

No matter if players are feeling like a rich ice queen or an annoying robot, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel allows them to deal a significant amount of damage to anyone that crosses their path. The lore behind The Pre Sequel helps to immerse users in the Borderlands universe, and is a must play for any fan of the series.

Borderlands: The Pre Sequel is available for PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.

Borderlands The Pre-Sequel: Choosing the Best Class

With Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel available for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, players venture onto the moon with one of four classes, each of whom work for series villain Handsome Jack. Conquering the satellite won't be easy, as you'll deal with a number of enemies looking to stop you at all costs.

This is where knowing each of the four character classes proves useful. All four of Handsome Jack's mercenaries bring something to the table, whether it's strength, speed or a little something extra. On that note, here is a quick guide that lets you know each character's best attributes, which will no doubt prove useful when it comes to picking the right member for your online squad and conquering the moon one chunk at a time.

Run wild on Elpis with Prima's Borderlands Beginner and Advanced tips.

Get the complete, official guide to Borderlands the Pre-Sequel, available now.

Let's start with Athena, whom you might have seen in the 2009 Borderlands 2 DLC, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx. Athena is more of a tank class, meaning she can carry an impressive amount of firepower, whether letting loose with a pair of assault rifles or going with something heavier like a rocket launcher.

In regard to her action skill, she utilizes the Kinetic Aspin. With this, she generates a shield similar to Marvel superhero Captain America. She's able to use it to deflect bullets (ideal if you're surrounded by enemies or trying to penetrate a heavily fortified base), as well as lob it towards enemies like a lethal Frisbee. From there, it'll bounce around targets before eventually fading, leaving her to use whatever weapons she has on hand, until it's recharged and ready to go once more.

Another veteran who previously appeared in Borderlands 2 (as a Hyperion Engineer/Loader during the End of the Line mission), Wilhelm is a welcome addition to the team, a Cyborg type who has a lot in common with Axton. He can summon a deployable attack drone at any time, as well as increase his strength through boosting, which is helpful when trying to get the jump on a nearby enemy.

With his Cyborg add-ons, Wilhelm is best for those looking to get the most from their Skill Trees, as players can increase his speed and firepower with a number of boosts, as well as adding modifications to make him a better combatant all around.

As for Wilhelm's special ability, he relies on the Wolf and Saint. With this, two drones (instead of one) provide an assist. The first works as an offensive guard, firing upon adversaries, while the other allows him to recharge his energy, keeping his health and shields in check. As a result, he gets the best of both worlds.

Those who prefer to build up their skills as a Borderlands fighter would do best to stick with Wilhelm.

Lock and load, partner. This former Sheriff of Lynchwood, who first appeared in Borderlands 2, is perfect for players who like heavy firepower. She has no problem going into battle and filling bad guys full of lead. Still, with a bumped-up fire rate, reload speed and gun damage, that doesn't mean she can't nail someone on the fast draw.

In addition to her guns, Nisha can also use a whip to get close to her enemies. She has the best melee range of all four characters (especially when you consider Claptrap's weak distance), even though it can't kill most of her foes. However, it can distract them long enough for someone to score a fatal blow.

Nisha's Action Skill is Showdown. Once activated, you'll be able to identify nearby enemies and take them out with ease, using the right analog stick to target them. The skill lasts for about six seconds, and you're able to take out as many foes as you can within this time range, so we suggest saving it for crowds.

Finally, Borderlands veterans won't need an introduction to Claptrap. Finally playable for the first time in the series, this talkative little robot packs a wallop on the battlefield, mainly due to the variety of weapons he carries.

Claptrap is best when it comes to tactics, as he can survey nearby enemies and help ambush them with a group. His melee strike, which is basically him comically throwing his robot arm, does little damage, but with others in tow, he can bring down the toughest foes.

If you need to see just how tactical Claptrap gets, launch his Action Skill, the vaulthunter.exe. With it, he can deduce which Vault Hunter is best for each situation, providing data such as where an enemy's weak spot is, or where any nearby weapons are. Once certain details are highlighted and stored, Claptrap can then mimic said action style himself, such as Nisha's quick-draw capability or Athena's shielding. He'll also get a quick refill of shield and health, so try and save it for when he's low.

Despite being the weakest character in the group, Claptrap shouldn't be ignored.

Hey, wanted to know who the good ones here are. Excluding Claptrap 'cause...just no.
I leveled all characters in BL2 to the cap with DLC (some multiple times) and know Salvador, Zer0, and Krieg where the tip tops.
Haven't played Pre-Sequel yet and just bought the handsome collection today because of the sale.

You didn't like Maya?! "Excluding Claptrap 'cause... just no." LMAO!! I hateClaptrap. That's the main reason I don'twant to play 1.5, just having other people playing him and him calling out "Badass!" "I'M HURT!!" and so on... Would drive me crazy.

I dunno. If I had to pick a character in 1.5, it would be Jack's Double, The Doppleganger.

Jack or Athena imo (Athena is overpowered as F*** with her shield and bloodshed)

Nisha's aimbot is OP as hell.

Also honestly Claptrap is OP as hell if you can stomach him and his playstyle. I honestly loved the fact everytime you use his action skill he fully heals himself.

Jack if specced right is OP.

Athena's melee spec with the right shield is OP.

Wilhelm while he doesnt do much damage he is the most durable.

Havent mastered Aurelia yet.

It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.

They're all very good. Athena, Jack and Nisha are probably the "best" in terms of killing things very fast, though Nisha doesn't have as much survivability as the other two (she also doesn't need it.)

Claptrap is right there as well. An explosive/Sapper build funzerking with my glitch Casual Ravagers, things also die very quickly.

Aurelia is probably my overall favorite, though she's a bit fragile when it comes to boss fights.

Can't say much about Wilhelm since I've only got him to lv. 9, but from what I've heard he's kinda the opposite of Nisha. She kills things so fast, she doesn't need survivability, he has so much survivability he doesn't need to kill things fast.

Wilhelm going for the Saint tree for coop with my cousin who's going Aurelia. I'll probably pick Jack in my 2nd runthrough.

Edit: @ Taishi, I capped Maya twice, I had a lot of fun with her but her Phaselock (and related skills) being useless on bosses bothered me. Healer Maya was fun though.
