Red Dead Online: 15 Moonshiner Tips Everyone Should Know
Red Dead Onlineis the wild west version of GTA Online. Players are immersed in a beautiful activity-filled world set in 1898 where industrial innovation is about to reach its peak. With the absence of cars, outlaws ride the mountains and river valleys in awe of a much simpler time. Rockstar added roles to Red Dead Online – The Trader, The Collector, The Bounty Hunter, and recently, The Moonshiner.
RELATED: Ways To Make Fast Money In Red Dead Online
The roles are a good source of cash and gold for players who want to earn quick money. The Moonshiner is fascinating; being the only role with a set of story missions. The Moonshiner role is slow-paced and rewards patient outlaws who stop and smell the flowers. Developing the right strategy, picking the right upgrades, waiting for the right customer, and maximizing profit are the characteristics of a successful Moonshiner. Here are 10 tips every Moonshiner should know.
Updated on August 10, 2021 by Payton Lott: The Moonshiner role is still a profitable profession in RDO once players have mastered it. Over the past year, gamers have had plenty of time to discover the ins and outs of distilling moonshine in game. This updated article includes five additional tips that will help those new to the role. Successful moonshiners are able to maximize profit and efficiency as they accrue more skills as a distiller. Use the following additional tips to get rich processing spirits in RDO. Remember to drive carefully and mind the bumps in the road to secure as much cash as possible.
15 Don't Change Flavors
Gamers can assign a flavor to their moonshine while it is being distilled. People will, of course, want to choose the most profitable flavor if the ingredients are available. However, there are no mixed flavors of moonshine. Selecting a different flavor will replace the initial flavor that was chosen. If the new flavor is worthless, players will miss out on a decent amount of cash when they sell the batch. Additionally, the ingredients for the initial flavor will be lost. Once a flavor is selected, it is best to stick with it.
14 Go To Madam Lazar For Herbs
Madam Lazar is a one-stop-shop for all of the Moonshiner herbs. All of the herbs for sale are only one dollar each. Considering how much moonshine sells for, that is not a bad deal. Gamers will want to pick up as many free herbs as they can while traversing the map, but Madam Lazar is always there just in case. It will often be worth the price to avoid having to fast travel, ride to the location of the herb, and search for it.
13 Stronger Is Better
In life and in RDO, stronger is better. The stronger the brew, the more money players will net with each sale. As people rank up in the role, they will have the opportunity to brew stronger batches quicker with the Master Distiller skill. Stronger moonshine takes longer to distill, but pays a lot more. On the other hand, weak moonshine is quicker and grants more XP. After reaching rank 15, there is no reason to brew the weaker stuff.
12 Best Shack Locations
Choosing a good location for the shack is important because moonshine can be damaged during transport. Places like the Grizzlies have too many bumps and winds on the roads, and product will be damaged along the route. Tall Trees and The Heartlands have the flattest roads, making deliveries a lot easier. Bayou Nwa is a great location too, although the foggy bayou is not exactly the most aesthetically pleasing location in RDO.
11 Play Moonshiner Solo
The Moonshiner business is a lot less profitable when playing with friends. Anyone helping the Moonshiner will only receive 20% of the proceeds from a sale. Also, players will receive only half of the experience when completing deliveries or distilling.
RELATED: Red Dead Online Update Adds Dockside Contract and More New Content
There are plenty of roles in the game that are better suited for co-op play. While RDO is more fun with a posse, the RDR2 Moonshiner role is a solo gig. Those completing Moonshiner tasks with friends are wasting their time.
10 Become Familiar With The Trader Role
The RDO Moonshiner role is very similar to the Trader role. A prerequisite to becoming a Moonshiner is to be a Trader first. Upon reaching Trader Level 5, or completing a sell mission, the player is given the option to start Moonshining.
A useful tip to becoming a successful Moonshiner is becoming familiar with the Trader role since there are not many differences between the two. Just like trading, the player collects ingredients and invests in materials to churn out some goods. Once the goods are done, they are sold to a buyer. Some would say that moonshining is easier than trading.
9 Become Familiar With The Location
Delivering and making a sale is an important part of moonshining. To make a sale, the player drives a delicate wagon that loses goods when damaged. Driving carefully and making haste is of the essence, but Revenue Agent Checkpoints and rocky terrain are major obstacles in making a sale.
If the player is lucky, the Checkpoints would let them pass, avoiding the collateral exchange of bullets. The terrain would still be challenging, however, so in order to make haste without damaging the wagon, a good Moonshiner must know the shortcuts and the best paths to take.
8 Don't Purchase Mash for Full Price
No Trader would ever purchase materials for $20. He loses the chance to earn XP and wastes money on something he can do for free. The same rule applies to Moonshiners. Mash required to produce Moonshine costs $50, but it could go all the way down to $10.
By doing Bootlegger Missions and Moonshiner Story Missions, the original price of the mash gets cut by $20 each mission the player does. The player is allowed to do one Bootlegger and one Story mission to lower the price of the mash. Not only does this increase profits for the sale, but it grants XP as well.
7 Upgrade The Condensers
Condenser Upgrades significantly increase potential profit. The upgrades allow the production of stronger mashes with no change in mash cost. Weak, average, and strong mashes will always cost the same. The only difference between them is the time required to produce them, which are 30 minutes, 45 minutes, and an hour respectively. This time is reduced once Moonshiner Level 15 is reached.
RELATED: Red Dead Online: Best Weapons (& How To Get Them)
The Condenser Upgrades for Average and Strong Moonshine cost $825 and two Tokens, and $875 and three Tokens respectively. A Moonshiner could easily earn back the amount he collectively spent on Condenser Upgrades with about 10 Strong and Flavored Moonshine sales.
6 Purchase The Bar Extension Early On
The similarities between a Trader and Moonshiner don't end with the produce-and-deliver mechanic. Just like the Stew Pot in the Trader's camp, a Moonshiner has the option to purchase a Bar Extension. Costing $850 and two Tokens, it allows the Moonshiner to indulge in their produced Moonshine, Almonds, and some Coffee.
This gives them Gold Health, Stamina, and Deadeye depending on the strength and flavor of their produced shine. Additionally, the Bar is a nice ambient place to hang out with the posse. The Band is purchased separately though.
5 Make a Habit of Picking Herbs
When on missions, exploring, or hunting for treasure chests, a player is sure to run into herb-filled areas. A good Moonshiner would take some time to pick up herbs during their journeys. Even when doing other tasks such as hunting animals for Trading or finding collectibles for Madam Nazar, a successful Moonshiner would have the patience to take down two birds with one stone and pick up herbs in the area of objective.
Among the necessary herbs for Moonshining are Vanilla Flowers, Wild Mints, Currants, Ginseng, Berries, Creek Plum, and Agarita Flowers. Having these fill the satchel makes for effortless Moonshining. These are necessary ingredients for flavoring; an add-on that significantly increases sale price.
4 Loot As Much Food as Possible
Flavoring also requires some liquor, fruits, and canned goods. Much like a good Moonshiner's approach to herbs outdoors, he should also search for ingredients indoors and on people. After clearing all enemies in a hideout, make sure to loot all cabinets, drawers, and corpses. *The catalogue is a great resource for moonshiners too. People can use it to purchase any of the items they can't find organically.
Even when doing other objectives, the Moonshiner at the back of a player's mind should still be present. Ideally, a player should be looking for canned fruit, different fruits, and liquor bottles which could be easily found after a raid, robbed off NPCs, and from horses' saddlebags. A regular visit to the nearby General Store also does not hurt.
3 Always Add Flavor
Good Moonshiners will always flavor their Moonshine. Flavoring increases the sale price by a respectable amount. If there's no available flavoring to make due to the lack of ingredients, it's always worth going to the nearest General Store to pick up some much-needed ingredients.
RELATED: The Best Outfits In Red Dead Redemption 2 (& The 5 Worst)
If a three-star recipe calls for canned strawberries, then a ride into town is very much necessary. Canned fruit doesn't cost too much, so the profits obtained from selling Flavored Moonshine will always be worth the extra effort.
2 Take Advantage of Rockstar Role Events
Oftentimes, Rockstar would roll out special limited-time events that award specific roles with huge XP boosts. When this happens, a player could jump from role Rank 1 to Rank 20 in less than two days. A good idea is to keep updated on the latest Rockstar News since these events are not rare.
Along with the XP boosts come huge discounts for upgrades, role-specific Tools, clothing, and much more. As a Moonshiner, keep on the lookout for Moonshiner Events and pounce on the discounts for upgrades and expansions. Sometimes, the General Store will have discounts as well so keep that in mind.
1 Play the Other Roles as Well
Red Dead Online roles are most profitable when done in conjunction with each other. In order to maximize profits, other roles can be prioritized while the mash is still being produced. A lot can be done during the hour of production or while waiting for the buyer's reset timer to count down.
A player can search for collectibles near them, catch bounties as a Bounty Hunter, hunt some deer for Cripps, and even look for treasure. The profits obtained from the other roles are essential to running the Moonshining business or buying some Moonshiner clothing and accessories.

Where's the best place to put your moonshine shack in Red Dead Online?
Are you looking to invest in the best moonshine shack location in Read Dead Online? Rockstar's online western world has recently gotten a cheaper, standalone version so you may be dipping into moonshine production for the first time.
You'll likely be stopping in to visit your shack often either to start up a batch or just take a sample at the bar with your posse pals. You'll want to choose a moonshine shack location that suits your style. When starting up your operation in the Moonshiner role, there are some conveniences to consider when you're choosing the best spot for your hooch-brewing hub.
How close is the moonshine shack to towns, post offices, and fast-travel spots? Are there typically a lot of other players in the area? And how difficult is it to make deliveries along the roads and trails from each shack location?
When you're preparing to buy a moonshine shack, the locations are all shown on a map, but there's really no information about which shack location is the best to choose. Here's our advice on the best Red Dead Online moonshine shack location.
How to buy a moonshine shack in Red Dead Online
To begin your career as a moonshiner, you'll need to either be a level 5 trader or have completed at least one trader sell mission. This isn't hard—it just means talking to Cripps in your camp, then driving a wagon from your camp to a delivery spot. Once you've done that, you'll be able to visit Maggie at Emerald Ranch to buy a moonshine shack.
Buying one costs 25 gold bars (about $10 real cash, if you haven't earned enough gold bars in-game), so be prepared to fork over some of your stash. If you're looking to make some premium currency fast, check out our Red Dead Online gold bar tips.
The best moonshine shack location in Red Dead Online
When buying your shack, there are five different regions to choose from:
- Bayou Nwa
- Hennigan's Stead
- Tall Trees
The moonshine shack isn't like your camp—you'll be sharing the shack with other players who have chosen the same region you did, so don't be surprised to see other players coming and going (they can't attack you if you're close to your shack, though). You can fast-travel to it, but you can't fast-travel from your shack to other locations, which is something to keep in mind when choosing your spot.
Each location has its pros and cons—here's how to make your choice.
Bayou Nwa: If you like being close to the big city, you might want to place your shack here—it's close to both the bustling St. Denis and the town of Rhodes. It's also not far from the bait and tackle shop and fast-travel spot in Lagras. The downside: being near St. Denis means a lot of player traffic. Also, you're in a damn swamp filled with hungry gators. And while the bayou has loads of atmosphere and feels suitable for moonshining from a roleplaying perspective, it's foggy and muddy and not the most beautiful place to spend your time.
Grizzlies: This is a gorgeous spot, extremely close to the post office at Wallace Station which makes it easy to pick up your mail-ordered groceries if your camp isn't placed nearby. There are meadows and a nearby pond and river, great for fishing, hunting, and gathering plants. The problem is making your moonshine deliveries on the winding, narrow, rocky roads in this region—you have to be extremely careful or you'll easily damage your moonshine, which means driving very slowly nearly the entire trip. It's a bummer.
Hennigan's Stead: This is probably the most remote of all the moonshine shack locations, way out in dusty New Austin close to the San Luis River. If you really don't want to see other players while you're going about your day, this might be the best spot for your shack. The closest town is Armadillo and there's a fast-travel spot at MacFarlane's Ranch to the north, but that's about it for nearby amenities.
Heartlands: Emerald Station is close, which is great for picking up your mail orders. You'll be making a lot of deliveries to Annesburg and Van Horn which aren't all that far, but they're not exactly close, either, so be prepared for some long trips in your wagon. There's some good hunting to do in the area, but that also means you can expect to see a lot of other players. This seems to be the most popular moonshine shack location, so keep that in mind before you buy it.
Tall Trees: This region doesn't get too crowded when it comes to player traffic, and it's moderately flat country so making deliveries isn't quite as difficult as it is in a region like Grizzlies. It's also close to Blackwater for running errands and collecting mail, and it's right next to Manzanita post, which is great if you want proximity to a fast-travel spot. The fence at Thieves Landing is close by as well. For my money, this is the best moonshine shack location in Red Dead Online.
How to move your moonshine shack
If you're unhappy with your moonshine shack's location, you can move it to another region whenever you want. In the player menu (by default, pressing L will bring it up) under Camps and Properties, select your shack and you'll be given the choice of where to move it. Each time you move your shack, it'll cost you $250.

Rockstar's biggest addition to Red Dead Online recently is the Moonshiner, a new role that allows players to brew and sell their own illicit liquor while defending their supply from enemies. We'll take you through how to play as a Moonshiner, what happens as you undertake the role, how to make money, and what you can unlock along the way.
How to Play as a Moonshiner
Being a Moonshiner is similar to being a Trader, though there's more of a combat focus and story campaign tied to the role. As a Moonshiner, you'll set up a hidden still, have a cook prepare jugs of flavoured liquor according to the demands of customers, then make a delivery to the buyer while trying to avoid Revenue Agents and bandits along the way. We already went over how to become a Moonshiner and what it'll cost you in this guide here, now we'll cover the set-up and business process to help make you a bonafide booze tycoon.
Best Location to Put Your Moonshiner Shack
The first thing you'll have to do is decide where you want to put your shack from one of the five below locations:
- Bayou Nwa
- Hennigan's Stead
- Tall Trees
It's worth mentioning that once you choose where to place your shack, you can relocate it from the same menu later, though it'll cost you $250 to do so. You also can't have more than one shack at a time, so if you're thinking of starting a franchise, think again.
The best place to put your shack is to some extent a matter of opinion, depending on what you find most helpful. There's several factors to consider when putting down roots, considering this building is going to be a hub for a lot of what you do.
- Closeness to town. Not only is it helpful to have a town close to hand, a general store can be really useful to a moonshiner, allowing you to buy the fruits and herbs with which you can flavour your product.
- Closeness to a Fast Travel Post. You can fast travel to your shack, but not from it, so being close to a location with a post is almost as good as being next to a town.
- Wildlife. You'll have to be a Trader to be a Moonshiner, so it can be good to be in an area with an abundance of animals for you to shoot down for your other business. You also want the right kind of wildlife, to see deer bouncing spryly across the horizon rather than step out into a wolf's open mouth.
- Player traffic. Getting the most popular moonshine shack is a double-edged sword, because there's always a chance you'll walk out of your front door into a crowd of fellow hooch-hucksters, and in Red Dead Online, there's also a chance that one of them will open fire on you for no reason.
With all this in mind, we would tentatively recommend picking between either Tall Trees or Bayou Nwa if you're happy to deal with player traffic. They are the best locations in all other regards, well-located for most basic needs. The Heartlands location in particular is very distant from anywhere, meaning a long commute on horseback every time you want to do anything.
Setting Up Your Moonshine Business
After choosing your location, visit it to speak with Maggie Fike, the bootlegging veteran who helps build your business. She'll give you two missions to set it up for good; one to steal a distillery still, one to rescue Marcel, Maggie's cook, from bandits. They're pretty simple missions, the first a wagon theft and the second a simple NPC rescue/escort. Bring a lot of ammo though; enemies tend to be very numerous in all Moonshiner-related content.
How to Make Moonshine
Now you've got the equipment and the expert, you'll have to make some moonshine. Head downstairs in your shack to speak with Marcel and make the decisions about what kind of Moonshine he'll be brewing. The process goes through these stages:
- Speak to Maggie upstairs to do a bootlegger mission. These are short, random quests that allow you to reduce the costs of brewing moonshine. They're not mandatory, but they do make brewing hooch cheaper or more profitable in some way, so we recommend doing at least one before every cook. The game will tell you when the price has dropped as much as it can.
- Talk to Marcel to brew weak, average or strong moonshine. To begin with, only the first of these options will be unlocked, but as you level up you'll unlock the option to buy better distilleries to create stronger moonshine. Stronger liquor takes longer to brew, but sells for more. This is also the point where you'll pay for the Moonshine Mash ingredients, which can cost up to $60 if you haven't done any missions.
- Flavour your moonshine in the same menu from one of several recipes. These recipes require certain food, plants, berries or herbs to do so, which you'll have to buy or find in the wild. Certain flavour moonshines will be wanted by different buyers, who will pay more for them.
- Wait for Marcel to create twenty bottles of moonshine. Depending on the strength of the moonshine, this'll take between thirty minutes and an hour of real time. You'll have to be online and in a server for the timer to elapse, so don't quit or turn off your game. Don't worry if you're out and doing missions, the game will alert you when Marcel's finished cooking.
- Return to the shack to start the sale mission. We'll go into this in more detail momentarily, but when Marcel's finished, simply go back and speak with him to choose who you'll sell it to.
How to Sell Moonshine and Choose a Buyer
If you flavoured your liquor, it'll always go for more, though certain people will pay extra for certain flavours. You can check these under "today's requests" when looking at flavour options, requests from certain buyers who want specialized hooch. You can make any flavour, but it's best to pick one somebody is actively asking for.
When Marcel is done, visit him again and choose the person who is offering the most money for your batch. Now the sale begins, in which you must drive a wagon to the buyer and avoid interference from Revenue Agents.
The important thing to note in Moonshine Selling missions is that you're not just defending yourself from attack, but also the bottles of Moonshine in the wagon, and they are fragile. Obviously gunfire can damage them, but so can poor driving, even just going too fast up a ramp. Your supply's health is measured by the blue icon at the top of the screen, and when you lose enough health, the bottles start breaking. You'll lose money every time a jug smashes, so you'll want to keep safe.
There's no guarantee you'll have to deal with the Revenue, of course. Usually there's three possibilities: you see them but they ignore you, they demand to check the wagon, or they attack you from the beginning. If you see a roadblock up ahead and they ask you to stop, it's almost a certainty it's about to get into a gunfight, so that's your moment to either make a mad dash through their checkpoint or to blow off as many bowler-hatted heads as possible.
If driving safely is proving difficult, there is something of a cheat: the wagon steers itself while you stare down the sights of a gun, so just keep aiming at nothing and it should control itself all the way to the target. It's not a perfect system - you might bump over a rock or hit an unwary NPC, but it works 95% of the time, so as long as you don't zone out, it can do the majority of the work for you.
How to Upgrade Your Moonshine Distillery Still and Moonshine Shack
As you do more Moonshine missions and sales, you'll rank up to the point where you can buy equipment upgrades to make stronger moonshine, unlocking at levels 5 and 10, costing close to a thousand dollars each time. You can buy them from Fike upstairs under the "Equipment Upgrades" option, as well as various other items and cosmetic changes to your shack - including a bar.
Building a Bar Expansion
The bar expansion is exactly what it sounds like: an expansion for your shack that turns the building into a tavern. You can also buy a band to play there, which provides ambient, bouncy music, and invite other players inside where you can all drink unlimited moonshine, acting as a kind of clubhouse.
Can You Make Money With the Moonshiner Bar Expansion?
You'd think so, but no, the thing is purely cosmetic, no matter how many NPCs you see drinking there. Many have suggested a kind of passive income generated from the building at that point, especially considering the bar costs $950.00, but at time of writing there is no such feature. Those who buy the bar are getting the clubhouse aspect, and that's about it.
Is Buying the Moonshiner Role Worth It?
If you have the gold already, we'd say yes. It's a meatier, more extensive role than any of the others so far, with a storyline told through missions you accept from Maggie Fike. It is expensive - probably too expensive - but it's still fun nonetheless, blending elements from all the other roles into something that stands out as a high point of Red Dead Online's content.
If that was helpful to you, we've got a similar guide here on how to play as a Trader, which you'll be already if you've unlocked this role. Or you can go here to see how to get the best saddles for your horse.
To buy moonshine rdr2 how
Red Dead Online has added the first new role since they were introduced to the game: the Moonshiner, a profession based around brewing and distributing barrels of elicit hooch. We'll show you how to become a moonshiner and what you can expect from it right here.
How to Become a Moonshiner
Becoming a moonshiner actually requires you to become a Trader first, then to complete one of several conditions. You don't have to complete them all, just one of them:
- Pay five gold bars in the "Progress" section of the main menu (not including the Trader starting fee)
- Complete a Trader Selling Delivery
- Reach Trader Rank 5
Once you complete any of these conditions, you'll get a letter sent both to any delivery offices and to your camp lockbox, with Cripps offering to introduce you to famed bootlegger Maggie Fike. This will open up a mission in Emerald Ranch (you should be able to see it on the map marked by a yellow icon), in which you can go to an old saloon and meet Fike personally in a cutscene. She'll explain how she wants to start up her bootlegging business again, and wants you to help… provided you pay an up-front investment. Like with being a trader, you'll have an opportunity to pay either in the cinematic, or you can do so later if you have the money.
To do this, go into the online menu (left on the D-Pad) and go down to "Camp and Properties". There'll be a second option for where you want to put a Moonshine Shack, though it makes it clear it'll charge you for the privilege. Once you do buy it, the Moonshiner role will open up and you'll be able to start playing it for yourself.
How Much Does it Cost to Become a Moonshiner?
A lot, and that's even by the standards of Red Dead's famously expensive economy. Assuming you paid the standard 15 gold to become a trader, the second expense you'll have to pay is an extra 25 gold bars to buy a Moonshine Shack from Fike and thus unlock the moonshiner role. This means that it'll cost you at least 40 gold bars to become a moonshiner, though at least you'll also get to be a Trader along the way as well.
So being a Trader, why not check out our full guide to what trading entails and how to make the most out of it here? Or if you're going to be riding across the West, take a peek at our guide on saddles to see which is the best for you and your trusty steed.
Red Dead Redemption Online: How to Buy a Moonshine Shack
There has been a new update to Red Dead Redemption Online which introduced a new Frontier Pursuit called the Moonshiner. As the name of this profession suggests you will be selling illicit alcohol in order to make money. To do this efficiently you need to grab yourself a Moonshine Shack. Unfortunately you can’t simply buy a Moonshine Shack right out of the gate. Read the guide below to learn how to buy a Moonshine Shack in Red Dead Redemption Online.
Reach Level 5 Trader or Have Completed a Trader Sell Mission
Before you can purchase a Moonshine Shack for yourself you first need to complete a prerequisite of sorts which involves the Trader role. To gain access to the Moonshiner profession you need to have completed at least one of the following:
- Reached Level 5 Trader.
- Completed a Trader sell mission.
Once you’ve completed one of the above objectives you will be able to start the new Frontier Pursuit known as the Moonshiner. Keep in mind this has to be completed, there is no way around not doing this.
Meet Cripps and Maggie at Emerald Ranch
After you’ve completed the objective listed above you will receive a letter from Cripps. This Business Opportunities Letter can be accessed in your satchel. In the letter Cripps mentions an acquaintance named Maggie Fike who wants to meet you and start up the Moonshining racket once again. After you’ve read this letter you will get a marker on your map at Emerald Ranch called A Life of ‘Shine. Go to Emerald Ranch to meet with Cripps and Maggie.
Alternatively if you already meet the requirements when you access the Red Dead Online screen you will see a Moonshiner option. You can select this (like previous Frontier Pursuits) to start the new job.
Regardless of what method you use when you reach Emerald Ranch you will trigger a cutscene at the old saloon. In this cutscene you meet Maggie who lays out the business proposition for you. During this cutscene Maggie will hand you a map with locations marked on it. From this map you can buy a Moonshine Shack.
How to Get Moonshine Shack?
Once you leave the saloon you will be able to buy a Moonshiner shack for yourself. To do this open the player menu and select the new option Camp & Properties then select Moonshine Shack and Choose Shack Location. Once you’ve done this you will have the option to purchase one of five Moonshine Shack that retail for 25 Gold in the following areas:
- Bayou Nwa.
- Hennigan’s Stead.
