Introduction

Chevy and Ford are the Godzilla and King Kong of pickup trucks: the strongest, best-equipped, and fiercest of rivals. The Chevy Silverado doesn’t sell quite as many units as the Ford F, but it’s a close-run contest.

Like the Ford, the Silverado is all things to all truckers. The base model is available in regular-, extended-, and crew-cab versions, with three bed lengths—five feet eight inches, six feet six inches, and eight feet. The heavy-duty models are available in HD (three-quarter ton) and HD (one ton) form, in all three cabs, with the two longer beds. All Silverados are available with rear- and all-wheel drive. Trim levels are WT, LS, LT, and LTZ.

The base Silverado comes with a hp, liter V-6 engine, but there are a number of V-8 options, from to liters; heavy-duty trucks have a base liter V-8 that makes horsepower and an available liter V-8 turbo-diesel that’s good for horsepower and a massive pound-feet of torque, enough to tow 13, pounds when properly equipped. (A fifth-wheel hitch gives up to 16, pounds of towing capacity.)

Like all pickups, the Silverado runs the gamut from hose-me-down work truck that has less standard equipment than the cheapest car on the market to a full-boat luxury vehicle that rivals the most expensive cars on the market for amenities. The Silverado has been on the Car and Driver5Best Trucks list as the outstanding pickup two years in a row. Moreover, the last time we ran full-size pickups in a head-to-head comparison, the Silverado beat its domestic competition and the Toyota Tundra and the Nissan Titan. It was also the North American Truck of the Year in

Verdict

The Silverado does a great all-around job: The engines are torquey and willing, the transmissions are well calibrated, and the steering and the ride are the best compromise in class. The HD’s diesel option is perfect for people who need to tow. Silverados may not be the fastest, able to tow the most, or possessed of the swankiest interiors in the pickup world, but they are the best overall.

What’s New for

The current Silverado was introduced in as a model, and Chevy has left the truck mostly alone. XM satellite radio is now standard on all models, there have been revisions to the seats and interior gauge clusters, and an integrated trailer-brake controller is now available (for half-ton models).

Trim Levels

In theory, the Silverado lineup is pretty simple. The WT (work truck) starts at $18, in rear-wheel-drive form or $21, in all-wheel-drive guise. It comes in regular cab (two to three passengers, two doors), extended cab (five to six passengers, rear suicide doors), and crew cab (five to six passengers, four full-size doors). The extended cab can be ordered with any of the three box lengths (five feet eight inches, six feet six inches, and eight feet); the regular cab comes with regular and long boxes. The crew cab comes only with the short box. WT models are pretty basic, with vinyl seats and a heater (on the regular cab). The liter V-6 is standard; hp, liter and hp, liter V-8s are optional, the latter with iron- or aluminum blocks as well as the possibility of E85 capability. Anti-lock front disc and rear drum brakes are standard, along with StabiliTrak stability control on crew-cab models.

Next in line is the LS, which comes with the hp, liter V-8 engine, in crew-cab form only. Starting at $29, in two-wheel-drive form and rising to $32, as an all-wheel-drive model, the LS adds to the WT cloth seats; power windows, doors, locks, and mirrors; remote keyless entry; chrome-style inch wheels; and chrome bumpers.

Chevrolet offers the LT as its midliner in 1LT and 2LT guises. The 1LT comes with the hp V-8 as standard in all three cab styles. Two-wheel-drive 1LTs start at $25,, rising to $28, for the all-wheel-drive version. A whole bunch of features become optional at this level, but a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls is standard, along with the Z85 suspension package, which has monotube shocks all-around.

The 2LT in extended- and crew-cab guises adds the hp V Power-folding mirrors and a remote starter become standard, along with six-way power front seats and dual-zone climate control. Base prices range from $29, for rear-wheel drive to $32, for all-wheel drive.

Finally, Chevy offers the Silverado in upscale LTZ trim. Starting at $32, in rear-drive form and $35, with all-wheel drive, the LTZ adds leather seats, a standard heavy-duty trailering package, an uplevel Bose audio system, way power front seats, a remote engine starter, an automatic locking differential, and rear audio controls.

HD trim choices are similar to those for the Both the standard liter V-8 and liter V-8 turbo-diesel engines are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions. There are WT, LT, and LTZ trim levels. The cheapest HD Silverado starts at $25,, rising to $36, for an LTZ; HDs start at $25,, with the LTZ costing $42,

Optional Equipment

Basically, buyers of the WT models pay so little that almost every desirable item is an option. Cruise control costs $; the towing package is $; and power windows, locks, and mirrors are another $ Upgrading to the liter V-8 costs $, and the is $

The LS options purely address the truck’s capabilities rather than any luxury pretensions. It has an available locking differential ($), a towing package ($), a brake controller ($), and a cargo-management system ($).

The 1LT adds a number of options and packages. The V-8 is available as a stand-alone for $ or as part of the Power Plus package that adds a heavy-duty trailering package, a locking differential, and inch aluminum wheels ($). A Safety package adds curtain airbags, power-adjustable pedals, and rear park assist for $ Alternatively, the airbags come on their own for $ A sunroof is $, and StabiliTrak costs a further $ on non-crew-cab versions. The Z71 off-road suspension package is $

The 2LT has the same safety and towing package, StabiliTrak, and curtain airbag options; additional add-ons include the liter V-8 ($), a navigation system ($), an uplevel Bose audio system ($), and inch wheels and tires ($). A Max Trailering package that includes the Z85 suspension and the liter engine is $ On the LTZ, the larger engine is $ and the navigation system is $

On the heavy-duty models, options roughly mirror the ’s, but probably the most important (and pricey) item on the list is the liter turbo-diesel V-8 engine, which costs $, plus $ for its Allison six-speed automatic transmission. A DVD rear-seat entertainment system is available for $ on crew-cab HDs.

Safety

In addition to standard front airbags, Silverado LT and LTZ models have available curtain airbags. The StabiliTrak skid-control system with rollover mitigation is available on LT and LTZ series trucks, but—like the curtain airbags—is not an option on the HD models. All varieties of Silverado have four-wheel anti-lock brakes.

Be Smart, Check in Advance. CARFAX — Your Vehicle History.

CARFAX — Your Vehicle History Expert

Sometimes what you don't know can't hurt you, but that's not the case when buying a used car. As an independent vehicle history provider, at CARFAX we've made it our mission to tell you everything you need to know by uncovering as many events as possible from the previous life of a used car. Our primary goal is to help you get to know your next car from the inside out before deciding to make an investment that will be part of you and your family's everyday life. We believe your next car shouldn't be hiding anything from you.

CARFAX Vehicle History Reports contain over 28 billion historical records from 20 European countries, the US and Canada, which are updated daily with new information.

Even if you live in a country we don't collect vehicle data from, it's still always worth checking the Vehicle Identification Number without obligation. The used car import and export market is booming and many owners would be surprised to find out exactly what happened to their vehicle during its previous life abroad.

Privacy for Customers — Transparency over Vehicles

Let's be clear: Although we strive to find every detail of a vehicle's life so far, we are focused only on the vehicle's history, and do not collect any information on previous owners. The information we provide relates solely to the vehicle, its odometer reading, any accidents that have been covered up, where the vehicle comes from and much more — it never gets personal. We've uncovered irreparable damage several times in the past, but other times our vehicle history checks draw a blank — and sometimes that's actually a good thing.

Second Hand — Not Second Best

Did you know that considerably more used cars are sold than new cars? We think this second-hand system is nothing short of fantastic. However, it goes without saying that it gives rise to different methods and tactics: Some sellers will disguise a car that's been in an accident under a fresh coat of paint, tamper with the odometer or conceal theft. This is one of the less appealing aspects of buying second hand. Our goal is to establish trusting relationships between buyers and sellers, since this is the best way to help customers make the right decision. Your new car should be reliable and make you feel safe, as well as make you feel like you haven't paid too much.

But more than anything else, we don't want you or your family unknowingly sitting behind the wheel of a vehicle that isn't % safe. This is why we strive to take these vehicles off the road, which not only makes the used car market safer but our streets safer too.

CARFAX — 35+ Years of Experience in Vehicle Histories

CARFAX was founded in the US in and expanded into Europe in Around team members spread across six European offices process vehicle information from 22 countries.

Fostering strategic partnerships with registration authorities, law enforcement agencies, government departments, insurance companies, inspection centers and numerous other leading companies around the world has enabled us to compile a unique international database for vehicle histories. We use this database to help make the used car market more transparent. We give everyone in the process of buying a used car access to what is currently the world's most comprehensive source for vehicle history reports, and is growing day by day.

We remain neutral and independent despite our partnerships — our sole purpose is help customers make an informed choice and ensure their safety and the safety of their family. This includes never collecting any personal details — we do not accept any PII from data sources amongst the information we provide about a vehicle. We ensure that data protection laws are observed at all times. Furthermore, we always collect our data in compliance with legal and regulatory frameworks — in all the countries in which we are active. We expressly distance ourselves from illegal activities such as data theft, scraping and hacking.
